Search for the Decay K+ -> pi+ pi0 nu nubar

The first search for the decay K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 nu nubar has been performed with the E787 detector at BNL. Based on zero events observed in the kinematical search region defined by 90 MeV/c < P_{pi^+} < 188 MeV/c and 135 MeV < E_{pi^0} < 180 MeV, an upper limit B(K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 nu nubar) < 4.3 x 10^{-5} at 90% confidence level is established.

EROS 2 proper motion survey: a field brown dwarf and an L dwarf companion to LHS 102

We report the discovery of two L dwarfs (the new spectral class defined for dwarfs cooler than the M type) in a two-epoch CCD proper motion survey of 413 square degrees, complemented by infrared photometry from DENIS. One of them has a strong lithium line and is therefore a brown dwarf. The other is a common proper motion companion to the mid-M dwarf LHS 102 (GJ 1001), which has a well determined trigonometric parallax. LHS 102B is thus the coolest L dwarf of known distance and luminosity. Its infrared absolute photometry are very well reproduced by the Allard et al DUSTY models.

Galactic Worm 123.4-1.5: A Mushroom-shaped HI Cloud

The Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory's Synthesis Telescope provides the highest resolution data (1 arcmin and 0.82 km/s) to date of an HI worm candidate. Observed as part of the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey, mushroom-shaped GW 123.4-1.5 extends only a few hundred parsecs, contains ~10^5 solar masses of neutral hydrogen, and appears unrelated to a conventional shell or chimney structure. Our preliminary Zeus-2d models use a single off-plane explosion with a modest (~10^{51} ergs) energy input. These generic simulations generate, interior to an expanding outer blast wave, a buoyant cloud whose structure resembles the morphology of the observed feature. Unlike typical model superbubbles, the stem can be narrow because its width is not governed by the pressure behind the blast wave nor the disk scale height. Using this type of approach it should be possible to more accurately model the thin stem and other details of GW 123.4-1.5 in the future.

A New Measurement of the Muon Magnetic Anomaly

The muon magnetic anomaly may contain contributions from physics beyond the standard model. At the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) a precision experiment aims for a measurement of the muon magnetic anomaly $a_μ$ to 0.35 ppm, where conclusions about various theoretical approaches beyond standard theory can be expected. The difference between the spin precession and cyclotron frequencies is measured in a magnetic storage ring with highly homogeneous field. Data taking is in progress and part of all recorded data has been analyzed. Combining all experimental results to date yields preliminarily $a_μ(expt)=1~165~921(5) \cdot 10^{-9}$ (4 ppm) in agreement with standard theory.

High Precision Mass Measurements in $Ψ$ and $Υ$ Families Revisited

High precision mass measurements in $Ψ$ and $Υ$ families performed in 1980-1984 at the VEPP-4 collider with OLYA and MD-1 detectors are revisited. The corrections for the new value of the electron mass are presented. The effect of the updated radiative corrections has been calculated for the $J/Ψ(1S)$ and $Ψ(2S)$ mass measurements.

Binary Microlensing Events from the MACHO Project

We present the lightcurves of 21 gravitational microlensing events from the first six years of the MACHO Project gravitational microlensing survey which are likely examples of lensing by binary systems. These events were manually selected from a total sample of ~350 candidate microlensing events which were either detected by the MACHO Alert System or discovered through retrospective analyses of the MACHO database. At least 14 of these 21 events exhibit strong (caustic) features, and 4 of the events are well fit with lensing by large mass ratio (brown dwarf or planetary) systems, although these fits are not necessarily unique. The total binary event rate is roughly consistent with predictions based upon our knowledge of the properties of binary stars, but a precise comparison cannot be made without a determination of our binary lens event detection efficiency. Towards the Galactic bulge, we find a ratio of caustic crossing to non-caustic crossing binary lensing events of 12:4, excluding one event for which we present 2 fits. This suggests significant incompleteness in our ability to detect and characterize non-caustic crossing binary lensing. The distribution of mass ratios, N(q), for these binary lenses appears relatively flat. We are also able to reliably measure source-face crossing times in 4 of the bulge caustic crossing events, and recover from them a distribution of lens proper motions, masses, and distances consistent with a population of Galactic bulge lenses at a distance of 7 +/- 1 kpc. This analysis yields 2 systems with companions of ~0.05 M_sun.

The CRESST Dark Matter Search

The current status of CRESST (Cryogenic Rare Event Search using Superconducting Thermometers) and new results concerning the detector development are presented. The basic technique of CRESST is to search for particle Dark Matter (WIMPS, Weakly Interacting Massive particles) by the measurement of non-thermal phonons as created by WIMP-induced nuclear recoils. Combined with the newly developed method of simultaneous measurement of scintillation light, strong background discrimination is possible, resulting in a substantial increase in WIMP detection sensitivity. The short and long term perspectives of CRESST are discussed.

Comparative Study of full QCD Hadron Spectrum and Static Quark Potential with Improved Actions

We investigate effects of action improvement on the light hadron spectrum and the static quark potential in two-flavor QCD for $a^{-1} \approx 1$ GeV and $m_{PS}/m_V = 0.7-0.9$. We compare a renormalization group improved action with the plaquette action for gluons, and the SW-clover action with the Wilson action for quarks. We find a significant improvement in the hadron spectrum by improving the quark action, while the gluon improvement is crucial for a rotationally invariant static potential. We also explore the region of light quark masses corresponding to $m_{PS}/m_V \geq 0.4$ on a 2.7 fm lattice using the improved gauge and quark action. A flattening of the potential is not observed up to 2 fm.

The program of research at hadronic beams of ITEP accelerator. (Collection of experimental proposals)

This is a collection of proposals of experiments at hadronic beams of 10 GeV accelerator, situated at the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics (Moscow, Russia). The proposals were presented by the leaders of several ITEP experimental groups and include selected problems of hadron-hadron (exotic states, scalar mesons, electomagnetic form factors, polarization phenomena etc.) and hadron-nucleon interactions (flucton and nuclear matter properties, hadron properties inside nuclei, interactions at small distances). Most of proposals are united by an idea of a common magnetic spectrometer with LiH(D) and polarized targets, wich could be built on the base of an existing 3m magnet. Some of them also refer to the intrinsic accelerator beam and to the new ion ring.

Induced proton polarization for pi^0 electroproduction at Q^2 = 0.126 (GeV/c)^2 around the Delta(1232) resonance

We present the first measurement of the induced proton polarization P_n in pi^0 electroproduction on the proton around the Delta resonance. The measurement was made at a central invariant mass and a squared four-momentum transfer of W=1231 MeV and Q^2 = 0.126 (GeV/c)^2, respectively. We measured a large induced polarization, P_n = -0.397 +/- 0.055 +/- 0.009. The data suggest that the scalar background is larger than expected from a recent effective Hamiltonian model.

The Pion-Nucleon sigma-Term with Dynamical Wilson Fermions

We calculate connected and disconnected contributions to the flavour singlet scalar density amplitude of the nucleon in a full QCD lattice simulation with $n_f=2$ dynamical Wilson fermions at $β=5.6$ on a $16^3 \times 32$ lattice. We find that both contributions are of similar size at the light quark mass. We arrive at the estimate $σ_{πN} = 18(5)$MeV. Its smallness is directly related to the apparent decrease of $u$, $d$ quark masses when unquenching QCD lattice simulations. The $y$ parameter can be estimated from a semi-quenched analysis, in which there are no strange quarks in the sea, the result being $y=0.59(13)$.}

Bottom and Charm quark masses from lattice NRQCD

We present new values for the $\bar{MS}$ masses of $b$ and $c$ quarks based on lattice NRQCD simulations of the $Υ(b\bar{b})$ and $ψ(c\bar{c})$ systems. These include three measurements of the $b$ mass based on quenched simulations with lattice spacings ranging from 0.05fm to 0.15fm, which we find to be largely independent of lattice spacing. In addition, we find a consistent value from an unquenched simulation at 0.08fm.

Scaling Analysis of Improved Actions for Pure SU(3) Gauge Theory

We have explored the behaviour of some improved actions based on a nonperturbative renormalization group (RG) analysis in coupling space. We calculate the RG flow in two-coupling space $(\boneone,\bonetwo)$ and examine the restoration of rotational invariance and the scaling of physical quantities $(T_c/\sqrtσ)$.

Near-Term Detectability of Terrestrial Extrasolar Planets: TEP Network Observations of CM Draconis

Results from a photometric search for extrasolar planetary transits across the eclipsing binary CM Dra are presented. The TEP (Transits of Extrasolar Planets) network has observed this star since 1994, and a lightcurve with 617 hours of coverage has been obtained. The data give a complete phase coverage of the CM Dra system at each of the 3 years of observations, with a noise of less than 5 mmag. New epoch and period values for CM Dra are derived, and a low flare rate of 0.025/hr has been confirmed. The absence of periodic variations in eclipse minimum times excludes the presence of very massive planets with periods of less than a few years. The lightcurve was visually scanned for the presence of unusual events which may be indicative of transits of extrasolar planets with 'massive earth' sizes. Six suspicious events were found which are being followed up for future transits, by planets with sizes between 1.5 and 2.5 RE (Earth Radii). However, none of these events has amplitudes compatible with planets larger than 2.5 RE. Coplanar planets larger than 2.5 RE and with orbital periods of less than 60 days can therefore be ruled out with a confidence of about 80%. Planets smaller than 1.5 RE cannot be detected in the data without a sub-noise detection algorithm. A preliminary signal detection analysis shows that there is a 50% detection confidence for 2 RE planets with a period from 10 to 30 days with the current data. This data-set demonstrates that it is possible to detect terrestrial sized planets with ground based photometry, and that strong constraints on the sizes of planets orbiting in the plane of the CM Dra system can be set.

Steps towards determination of the size and structure of the Broad-Line Region in Active Galactic Nuclei. XIII. Ultraviolet observations of the Broad-Line Radio Galaxy 3C 390.3

As part of an extensive multi-wavelength monitoring campaign, the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite was used to observe the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 390.3 during the period 1994 December 31 to 1996 March 5. Spectra were obtained every 6-10 days. The UV continuum varied by a factor of 7 through the campaign, while the broad emission-lines varied by factors of 2-5. Unlike previously monitored Seyfert 1 galaxies, in which the X-ray continuum generally varies with a larger amplitude than the UV, in 3C 390.3 the UV continuum light-curve is similar in both amplitude and shape to the X-ray light-curve observed by ROSAT. The UV broad emission-line variability lags that of the UV continuum by 35-70 days for Ly-alpha and CIV 1549; values larger than those found for Seyfert 1 galaxies of comparable UV luminosity. These lags are also larger than those found for the Balmer lines in 3C 390.3 over the same period. The red and blue wings of CIV and Ly-alpha vary in phase, suggesting that radial motion does not dominate the kinematics of the UV line-emitting gas. Comparison with archival data provides evidence for velocity-dependent changes in the Ly-alpha and CIV line profiles, indicating evolution in the detailed properties and/or distribution of the broad-line emitting gas.

Chiral Disorder in QCD

Using the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner (GOR) relation and semi-classical arguments, we show that the bulk quark spectrum in QCD exhibits a variety of regimes including the ergodic one described by random matrix theory. We analyze the quark spectral form-factor in the diffusive and ballistic regime. We suggest that a class of chiral transitions in QCD is possibly of the metal-insulator type, with a universal spectral statistics at the mobility edge.

The Hubble Space Telescope Extragalactic Distance Scale Key Project. X. The Cepheid Distance to NGC 7331

The distance to NGC 7331 has been derived from Cepheid variables observed with HST/WFPC2, as part of the Extragalactic Distance Scale Key Project. Multi-epoch exposures in F555W (V) and F814W (I), with photometry derived independently from DoPHOT and DAOPHOT/ALLFRAME programs, were used to detect a total of 13 reliable Cepheids, with periods between 11 and 42 days. The relative distance moduli between NGC 7331 and the LMC, imply an extinction to NGC 7331 of A_V = 0.47+-0.15 mag, and an extinction-corrected distance modulus to NGC 7331 of 30.89+-0.14(random) mag, equivalent to a distance of 15.1 Mpc. There are additional systematic uncertainties in the distance modulus of +-0.12 mag due to the calibration of the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation, and a systematic offset of +0.05+-0.04 mag if we applied the metallicity correction inferred from the M101 results of Kennicutt et al 1998.
