Discovery of VHE Gamma Rays from PKS 2005-489

The high-frequency peaked BL Lac PKS 2005-489 (z=0.071) was observed in 2003 and 2004 with the H.E.S.S. stereoscopic array of imaging atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes in Namibia. A signal was detected at the 6.7 sigma level in the 2004 observations (24.2 hrs live time), but not in the 2003 data set (27.3 hrs live time). PKS 2005-489 is the first blazar independently discovered by H.E.S.S. to be an emitter of VHE photons, and only the second such blazar in the Southern Hemisphere. The integral flux above 200 GeV observed in 2004 is (6.9 +/- 1.0 +/- 1.4) x 10$^{-12}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, corresponding to ~2.5% of the flux observed from the Crab Nebula. The 99% upper limit on the flux in 2003, I(>200 GeV) < 5.2 x 10$^{-12}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, is smaller than the flux measured in 2004, suggesting an increased level of activity in 2004. However, the data show no evidence for significant variability on any time scale less than a year. An energy spectrum is measured and is characterized by a very soft power law (photon index = 4.0 +/- 0.4).

Study of the dissipative binary channels in the 107Ag+58Ni reaction at 52 MeV/nucleon

The binary dissipative channels are characterized by the presence of two main fragments in the exit channel. They have been studied in the 107Ag+58Ni reaction at 52 MeV/nucleon of bombarding energy. For that purpose a modified version of the INDRA multidetector has been used in conjunction with a part of the CHIMERA multidetector. Preliminary results on the excitation energy and intrinsic angular momentum of the quasi-projectile are reported and compared to a dynamical calculation.

Restframe I-band Hubble diagram for type Ia supernovae up to redshift z ~0.5

We present a novel technique for fitting restframe I-band light curves on a data set of 42 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). Using the result of the fit, we construct a Hubble diagram with 26 SNe from the subset at 0.01< z<0.1. Adding two SNe at z~0.5 yields results consistent with a flat Lambda-dominated``concordance universe'' ($Ω_M,Ω_Λ$)=(0.25,0.75). For one of these, SN 2000fr, new near infrared data are presented. The high redshift supernova NIR data are also used to test for systematic effects in the use of SNe Ia as distance estimators. A flat, Lambda=0, universe where the faintness of supernovae at z~0.5 is due to grey dust homogeneously distributed in the intergalactic medium is disfavoured based on the high-z Hubble diagram using this small data-set. However, the uncertainties are large and no firm conclusion may be drawn. We explore the possibility of setting limits on intergalactic dust based on B-I and B-V colour measurements, and conclude that about 20 well measured SNe are needed to give statistically significant results. We also show that the high redshift restframe I-band data points are better fit by light curve templates that show a prominent second peak, suggesting that they are not intrinsically underluminous.

Isotopic Scaling and the Symmetry Energy in Spectator Fragmentation

Isotopic effects in the fragmentation of excited target residues following collisions of $^{12}$C on $^{112,124}$Sn at incident energies of 300 and 600 MeV per nucleon were studied with the INDRA 4$π$ detector. The measured yield ratios for light particles and fragments with atomic number $Z \leq$ 5 obey the exponential law of isotopic scaling. The deduced scaling parameters decrease strongly with increasing centrality to values smaller than 50% of those obtained for the peripheral event groups. Symmetry term coefficients, deduced from these data within the statistical description of isotopic scaling, are near $γ=$ 25 MeV for peripheral and $γ<$ 15 MeV for central collisions.

Discovery of extended VHE gamma-ray emission from the asymmetric pulsar wind nebula in MSH 15-52 with H.E.S.S

The Supernova Remnant MSH 15-52 has been observed in very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays using the H.E.S.S. 4-telescope array located in Namibia. A gamma-ray signal is detected at the 25 sigma level during an exposure of 22.1 hours live time. The image reveals an elliptically shaped emission region around the pulsar PSR B1509-58, with semi-major axis 6' in the NW-SE direction and semi-minor axis 2' approximately. This morphology coincides with the diffuse pulsar wind nebula as observed at X-ray energies by ROSAT. The overall energy spectrum from 280 GeV up to 40 TeV can be fitted by a power law with photon index Gamma = 2.27 +/- 0.03(stat.) +/- 0.20(syst.). The detected emission can be plausibly explained by inverse Compton scattering of accelerated relativistic electrons with soft photons.

Search for TeV emission from the region around PSR B1706-44 with the H.E.S.S. experiment

The region around PSR B1706-44 has been observed with the H.E.S.S. imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes in 2003. No evidence for gamma-ray emission in the TeV range was found at the pulsar position or at the radio arc which corresponds to the supernova remnant G 343.1-2.3. The 99% confidence level flux upper limit at the pulsar position is Ful(E > 350GeV) = 1.4e-12 /cm^2/s assuming a power law with photon index of 2.5 and Ful(E > 500GeV) = 1.3e-12 /cm^2/s without an assumption on the spectral shape. The reported upper limits correspond to 8% of the flux from an earlier detection by the CANGAROO experiment.

Very high energy gamma rays from the composite SNR G0.9+0.1

Very high energy (> 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission has been detected for the first time from the composite supernova remnant G0.9+0.1 using the H.E.S.S. instrument. The source is detected with a significance of 13 sigma, and a photon flux above 200 GeV of (5.7+/-0.7 stat +/- 1.2 sys) * 10^-12 cm^-2 s^-1, making it one of the weakest sources ever detected at TeV energies. The photon spectrum is compatible with a power law (dN/dE \propto E^-Gamma) with photon index Gamma = 2.40 +/- 0.11 stat +/- 0.20 sys. The gamma-ray emission appears to originate in the plerionic core of the remnant, rather than the shell, and can be plausibly explained as inverse Compton scattering of relativistic electrons.

Very high energy gamma rays from the direction of Sagittarius A*

We report the detection of a point-like source of very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays coincident within 1' of Sgr A*, obtained with the H.E.S.S. array of Cherenkov telescopes. The gamma-rays exhibit a power-law energy spectrum with a spectral index of -2.2 +/- 0.09 +/- 0.15 and a flux above the 165 GeV threshold of (1.82 +/- 0.22) * 10^-7 m^-2 s^-1. The measured flux and spectrum differ substantially from recent results reported in particular by the CANGAROO collaboration.

H.E.S.S. Observations of PKS 2155-304

The high-frequency peaked BL Lac PKS 2155-304 at redshift z=0.117 has been detected with high significance (~45 sigma) at energies greater than 160 GeV, using the H.E.S.S. stereoscopic array of imaging air-Cherenkov telescopes in Namibia. A strong signal is found in each of the data sets corresponding to the dark periods of July and October, 2002, and June-September, 2003. The observed flux of VHE gamma rays shows variability on time scales of months, days, and hours. The monthly-averaged integral flux above 300 GeV varies between 10% and 60% of the flux observed from the Crab Nebula. Energy spectra are measured for these individual periods of data taking and are characterized by a steep power law with a time-averaged photon index of 3.32 +/- 0.06. An improved chi-square per degree of freedom is found when either a power law with an exponential cutoff energy or a broken power law are fit to the time-averaged energy spectrum. However, the significance of the improvement is marginal (~2 sigma). The suggested presence of features in the energy spectrum may be intrinsic to the emission from the blazar, or an indication of absorption of TeV gamma rays by the extragalactic infrared background light.

High-energy particle acceleration in the shell of a supernova remnant

A significant fraction of the energy density of the interstellar medium is in the form of high-energy charged particles (cosmic rays). The origin of these particles remains uncertain. Although it is generally accepted that the only sources capable of supplying the energy required to accelerate the bulk of Galactic cosmic rays are supernova explosions, and even though the mechanism of particle acceleration in expanding supernova remnant (SNR) shocks is thought to be well understood theoretically, unequivocal evidence for the production of high-energy particles in supernova shells has proven remarkably hard to find. Here we report on observations of the SNR RX J1713.7-3946 (G347.3-0.5), which was discovered by ROSAT in the X-ray spectrum and later claimed as a source of high-energy γ-rays of TeV energies (1 TeV=10^{12} eV). We present a TeV γ-ray image of the SNR: the spatially resolved remnant has a shell morphology similar to that seen in X-rays, which demonstrates that very-high-energy particles are accelerated there. The energy spectrum indicates efficient acceleration of charged particles to energies beyond 100 TeV, consistent with current ideas of particle acceleration in young SNR shocks.

Leptonic decay constants f_Ds and f_D in three flavor lattice QCD

We determine the leptonic decay constants in three flavor unquenched lattice QCD. We use O(a^2)-improved staggered light quarks and O(a)-improved charm quarks in the Fermilab heavy quark formalism. Our preliminary results, based upon an analysis at a single lattice spacing, are f_Ds = 263(+5-9)(+/-24) MeV and f_D = 225(+11-13)(+/-21) MeV. In each case, the first reported error is statistical while the is the combined systematic uncertainty.

The scaling dimension of low lying Dirac eigenmodes and of the topological charge density

As a quantitative measure of localization, the inverse participation ratio of low lying Dirac eigenmodes and topological charge density is calculated on quenched lattices over a wide range of lattice spacings and volumes. Since different topological objects (instantons, vortices, monopoles, and artifacts) have different co-dimension, scaling analysis provides information on the amount of each present and their correlation with the localization of low lying eigenmodes.

Neutron Spin Structure Measurements in JLab Hall A

Recent progress from Jefferson Lab has significantly improved our understanding of the nucleon spin structure in the high-$x$ region. Results from two experiments in Hall A are presented. The first experiment is a precision measurement of the neutron spin asymmetry, $A_1^n$, in the high-$x$ (valence quark) region. The results show for the first time that $A_1^n$ becomes positive at large $x$, strongly breaking SU(6) (spin-flavor) symmetry. The data trend is in good agreement with SU(6)-breaking valence quark models and with the fits to the previous world data. Combining the $A_1^n$ results with the world $A_1^p$ data, the up and down quark spins distributions in the nucleon were extracted. The results showed that for the proton the valence down quark spin is in the opposite direction from that of the proton, in disagreement with predictions of leading-order perturbative QCD models, which neglect quark orbital angular momentum. In the second experiment, the $Q^2$ dependence of the moments and sum rules of the spin structure in the low to intermediate $Q^2$ region were measured, providing a unique bridge linking the quark-gluon picture of the nucleon and the coherent hadronic picture.

Calibration of cameras of the H.E.S.S. detector

H.E.S.S. - the High Energy Stereoscopic System- is a new system of large atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes for GeV/TeV astronomy. Each of the four telescopes of 107 m^2 mirror area is equipped with a 960-pixel photomulitiplier-tube camera. This paper describes the methods used to convert the photomultiplier signals into the quantities needed for Cherenkov image analysis. Two independent calibration techniques have been applied in parallel to provide an estimation of uncertainties. Results on the long-term stability of the H.E.S.S. cameras are also presented.

The European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS): The Final Band-merged Catalogue

We present the final band-merged ELAIS catalogue at 6.7, 15, 90, and 175 $μ$m, and the associated data at u,g,r,i,z,J,H,K, and 20cm. The origin of the survey, infrared and radio observations, data-reduction and optical identifications are briefly reviewed, and a summary of the area covered, and completeness limit for each infrared band is given. A detailed discussion of the band-merging and optical association strategy is given. The total catalogues consists of 2860 sources. For extragalactic sources observed in 3 or more infrared bands, colour-colour diagrams are presented and discussed in terms of the contributing infrared populations. Spectral energy distributions are shown for selected sources and compared with cirrus, M82 and Arp220 starburst, and AGN dust torus models. Spectroscopic redshifts are tabulated, where available. For the N1 and N2 areas, the INT ugriz Wide Field Survey, permits photometric redshifts to be estimated for galaxies and quasars. These agree well with the spectroscopic redshifts, within the uncertainty of the photometric method. The redshift distribution is given for selected ELAIS bands and colour-redshift diagrams are discussed. There is a high proportion of ultraluminous infrared galaxies in the ELAIS Catalogue ($> 10 %$ of 15 $μ$m sources), many with Arp220-like colours. 10 hyperluminous infrared galaxies and 10 EROs are found in the survey. The large numbers of ultraluminous galaxies imply very strong evolution in the star-formation rate between z = 0 and 1.

Computational Topology for Regular Closed Sets

The Boolean algebra of regular closed sets is prominent in topology, particularly as a dual for the Stone-Cech compactification. This algebra is also central for the theory of geometric computation, as a representation for combinatorial operations on geometric sets. However, the issue of computational approximation introduces unresolved subtleties that do not occur within "pure" topology. One major effort towards reconciling this mathematical theory with computational practice is our ongoing I-TANGO project. The acronym I-TANGO is an abbreviation for "Intersections - Topology, Accuracy and Numerics for Geometric Objects". The long-range goals and initial progress of the I-TANGO team in development of computational topology are presented.

Lattice QCD calculation of the proton decay matrix element in the continuum limit

We present a quenched lattice QCD calculation of the αand βparameters of the proton decay matrix element. The simulation is carried out using the Wilson quark action at three values of the lattice spacing in the range a\approx 0.1-0.064 fm to study the scaling violation effect. We find only mild scaling violation when the lattice scale is determined by the nucleon mass. We obtain in the continuum limit, |α(NDR,2GeV)|=0.0090(09)(^{+5}_{-19})GeV^3 and |β(NDR,2GeV)|=0.0096(09)(^{+6}_{-20})GeV^3 with αand βin a relatively opposite sign, where the first error is statistical and the second is due to the uncertainty in the determination of the physical scale.

Discretisation effects in the topological susceptibility in lattice QCD

We study the topological susceptibility, chi, in QCD with two quark flavours using lattice field configurations that have been produced with an O(a)-improved clover quark action. We find clear evidence for the expected suppression at small quark mass, m_q, and examine the variation of $χ$ with this mass and the lattice spacing, a. A joint continuum and chiral extrapolation yields good agreement with theoretical expectations as (a, m_q) -> 0. A moderate increase in autocorrelation is observed on the more chiral ensembles, but within large statistical errors. Finite volume effects are negligible for Leutwyler-Smilga parameter x_LS > 10, and no evidence for a nearby phase transition is observed.
