Enabling Mammography with Co-Robotic Ultrasound

Ultrasound (US) imaging is a vital adjunct to mammography in breast cancer screening and diagnosis, but its reliance on hand-held transducers often lacks repeatability and heavily depends on sonographers' skills. Integrating US systems from different vendors further complicates clinical standards and workflows. This research introduces a co-robotic US platform for repeatable, accurate, and vendor-independent breast US image acquisition. The platform can autonomously perform 3D volume scans or swiftly acquire real-time 2D images of suspicious lesions. Utilizing a Universal Robot UR5 with an RGB camera, a force sensor, and an L7-4 linear array transducer, the system achieves autonomous navigation, motion control, and image acquisition. The calibrations, including camera-mammogram, robot-camera, and robot-US, were rigorously conducted and validated. Governed by a PID force control, the robot-held transducer maintains a constant contact force with the compression plate during the scan for safety and patient comfort. The framework was validated on a lesion-mimicking phantom. Our results indicate that the developed co-robotic US platform promises to enhance the precision and repeatability of breast cancer screening and diagnosis. Additionally, the platform offers straightforward integration into most mammographic devices to ensure vendor-independence.

GDN: A Stacking Network Used for Skin Cancer Diagnosis

Skin cancer, the primary type of cancer that can be identified by visual recognition, requires an automatic identification system that can accurately classify different types of lesions. This paper presents GoogLe-Dense Network (GDN), which is an image-classification model to identify two types of skin cancer, Basal Cell Carcinoma, and Melanoma. GDN uses stacking of different networks to enhance the model performance. Specifically, GDN consists of two sequential levels in its structure. The first level performs basic classification tasks accomplished by GoogLeNet and DenseNet, which are trained in parallel to enhance efficiency. To avoid low accuracy and long training time, the second level takes the output of the GoogLeNet and DenseNet as the input for a logistic regression model. We compare our method with four baseline networks including ResNet, VGGNet, DenseNet, and GoogLeNet on the dataset, in which GoogLeNet and DenseNet significantly outperform ResNet and VGGNet. In the second level, different stacking methods such as perceptron, logistic regression, SVM, decision trees and K-neighbor are studied in which Logistic Regression shows the best prediction result among all. The results prove that GDN, compared to a single network structure, has higher accuracy in optimizing skin cancer detection.

FPHammer: A Device Identification Framework based on DRAM Fingerprinting

The device fingerprinting technique extracts fingerprints based on the hardware characteristics of the device to identify the device. The primary goal of device fingerprinting is to accurately and uniquely identify a device, which requires the generated device fingerprints to have good stability to achieve long-term tracking of the target device. However, the fingerprints generated by some existing fingerprinting technologies are not stable enough or change frequently, making it impossible to track the target device for a long time. In this paper, we present FPHammer, a novel DRAM-based fingerprinting technique. The device fingerprint generated by our technique has high stability and can be used to track the device for a long time. We leverage the Rowhammer technique to repeatedly and quickly access a row in DRAM to get bit flips in its adjacent row. We then construct a physical fingerprint of the device based on the locations of the collected bit flips. The evaluation results of the uniqueness and reliability of the physical fingerprint show that it can be used to distinguish devices with the same hardware and software configuration. The experimental results on device identification demonstrate that the physical fingerprints engendered by our innovative technique are inherently linked to the entirety of the device rather than just the DRAM module. Even if the device modifies software-level parameters such as MAC address and IP address or even reinstalls the operating system, we can accurately identify the target device. This demonstrates that FPHammer can generate stable fingerprints that are not affected by software layer parameters.

A Discourse-level Multi-scale Prosodic Model for Fine-grained Emotion Analysis

This paper explores predicting suitable prosodic features for fine-grained emotion analysis from the discourse-level text. To obtain fine-grained emotional prosodic features as predictive values for our model, we extract a phoneme-level Local Prosody Embedding sequence (LPEs) and a Global Style Embedding as prosodic speech features from the speech with the help of a style transfer model. We propose a Discourse-level Multi-scale text Prosodic Model (D-MPM) that exploits multi-scale text to predict these two prosodic features. The proposed model can be used to analyze better emotional prosodic features and thus guide the speech synthesis model to synthesize more expressive speech. To quantitatively evaluate the proposed model, we contribute a new and large-scale Discourse-level Chinese Audiobook (DCA) dataset with more than 13,000 utterances annotated sequences to evaluate the proposed model. Experimental results on the DCA dataset show that the multi-scale text information effectively helps to predict prosodic features, and the discourse-level text improves both the overall coherence and the user experience. More interestingly, although we aim at the synthesis effect of the style transfer model, the synthesized speech by the proposed text prosodic analysis model is even better than the style transfer from the original speech in some user evaluation indicators.

Take-A-Photo: 3D-to-2D Generative Pre-training of Point Cloud Models

With the overwhelming trend of mask image modeling led by MAE, generative pre-training has shown a remarkable potential to boost the performance of fundamental models in 2D vision. However, in 3D vision, the over-reliance on Transformer-based backbones and the unordered nature of point clouds have restricted the further development of generative pre-training. In this paper, we propose a novel 3D-to-2D generative pre-training method that is adaptable to any point cloud model. We propose to generate view images from different instructed poses via the cross-attention mechanism as the pre-training scheme. Generating view images has more precise supervision than its point cloud counterpart, thus assisting 3D backbones to have a finer comprehension of the geometrical structure and stereoscopic relations of the point cloud. Experimental results have proved the superiority of our proposed 3D-to-2D generative pre-training over previous pre-training methods. Our method is also effective in boosting the performance of architecture-oriented approaches, achieving state-of-the-art performance when fine-tuning on ScanObjectNN classification and ShapeNetPart segmentation tasks. Bootstrap Generalization Ability from Loss Landscape Perspective

Domain generalization aims to learn a model that can generalize well on the unseen test dataset, i.e., out-of-distribution data, which has different distribution from the training dataset. To address domain generalization in computer vision, we introduce the loss landscape theory into this field. Specifically, we bootstrap the generalization ability of the deep learning model from the loss landscape perspective in four aspects, including backbone, regularization, training paradigm, and learning rate. We verify the proposed theory on the NICO++, PACS, and VLCS datasets by doing extensive ablation studies as well as visualizations. In addition, we apply this theory in the ECCV 2022 NICO Challenge1 and achieve the 3rd place without using any domain invariant methods.

AdaPoinTr: Diverse Point Cloud Completion with Adaptive Geometry-Aware Transformers

In this paper, we present a new method that reformulates point cloud completion as a set-to-set translation problem and design a new model, called PoinTr, which adopts a Transformer encoder-decoder architecture for point cloud completion. By representing the point cloud as a set of unordered groups of points with position embeddings, we convert the input data to a sequence of point proxies and employ the Transformers for generation. To facilitate Transformers to better leverage the inductive bias about 3D geometric structures of point clouds, we further devise a geometry-aware block that models the local geometric relationships explicitly. The migration of Transformers enables our model to better learn structural knowledge and preserve detailed information for point cloud completion. Taking a step towards more complicated and diverse situations, we further propose AdaPoinTr by developing an adaptive query generation mechanism and designing a novel denoising task during completing a point cloud. Coupling these two techniques enables us to train the model efficiently and effectively: we reduce training time (by 15x or more) and improve completion performance (over 20%). We also show our method can be extended to the scene-level point cloud completion scenario by designing a new geometry-enhanced semantic scene completion framework. Extensive experiments on the existing and newly-proposed datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, which attains 6.53 CD on PCN, 0.81 CD on ShapeNet-55 and 0.392 MMD on real-world KITTI, surpassing other work by a large margin and establishing new state-of-the-arts on various benchmarks. Most notably, AdaPoinTr can achieve such promising performance with higher throughputs and fewer FLOPs compared with the previous best methods in practice. Sampling-Based Optimization for Multi-Agent Model Predictive Control

We systematically review the Variational Optimization, Variational Inference and Stochastic Search perspectives on sampling-based dynamic optimization and discuss their connections to state-of-the-art optimizers and Stochastic Optimal Control (SOC) theory. A general convergence and sample complexity analysis on the three perspectives is provided through the unifying Stochastic Search perspective. We then extend these frameworks to their distributed versions for multi-agent control by combining them with consensus Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) to decouple the full problem into local neighborhood-level ones that can be solved in parallel. Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithms are then developed based on these frameworks, leading to fully decentralized sampling-based dynamic optimizers. The capabilities of the proposed algorithms framework are demonstrated on multiple complex multi-agent tasks for vehicle and quadcopter systems in simulation. The results compare different distributed sampling-based optimizers and their centralized counterparts using unimodal Gaussian, mixture of Gaussians, and stein variational policies. The scalability of the proposed distributed algorithms is demonstrated on a 196-vehicle scenario where a direct application of centralized sampling-based methods is shown to be prohibitive.

P2P: Tuning Pre-trained Image Models for Point Cloud Analysis with Point-to-Pixel Prompting

Nowadays, pre-training big models on large-scale datasets has become a crucial topic in deep learning. The pre-trained models with high representation ability and transferability achieve a great success and dominate many downstream tasks in natural language processing and 2D vision. However, it is non-trivial to promote such a pretraining-tuning paradigm to the 3D vision, given the limited training data that are relatively inconvenient to collect. In this paper, we provide a new perspective of leveraging pre-trained 2D knowledge in 3D domain to tackle this problem, tuning pre-trained image models with the novel Point-to-Pixel prompting for point cloud analysis at a minor parameter cost. Following the principle of prompting engineering, we transform point clouds into colorful images with geometry-preserved projection and geometry-aware coloring to adapt to pre-trained image models, whose weights are kept frozen during the end-to-end optimization of point cloud analysis tasks. We conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate that cooperating with our proposed Point-to-Pixel Prompting, better pre-trained image model will lead to consistently better performance in 3D vision. Enjoying prosperous development from image pre-training field, our method attains 89.3% accuracy on the hardest setting of ScanObjectNN, surpassing conventional point cloud models with much fewer trainable parameters. Our framework also exhibits very competitive performance on ModelNet classification and ShapeNet Part Segmentation. Code is available at https://github.com/wangzy22/P2P.

Modeling Price Elasticity for Occupancy Prediction in Hotel Dynamic Pricing

Demand estimation plays an important role in dynamic pricing where the optimal price can be obtained via maximizing the revenue based on the demand curve. In online hotel booking platform, the demand or occupancy of rooms varies across room-types and changes over time, and thus it is challenging to get an accurate occupancy estimate. In this paper, we propose a novel hotel demand function that explicitly models the price elasticity of demand for occupancy prediction, and design a price elasticity prediction model to learn the dynamic price elasticity coefficient from a variety of affecting factors. Our model is composed of carefully designed elasticity learning modules to alleviate the endogeneity problem, and trained in a multi-task framework to tackle the data sparseness. We conduct comprehensive experiments on real-world datasets and validate the superiority of our method over the state-of-the-art baselines for both occupancy prediction and dynamic pricing.

AutoLaparo: A New Dataset of Integrated Multi-tasks for Image-guided Surgical Automation in Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

Computer-assisted minimally invasive surgery has great potential in benefiting modern operating theatres. The video data streamed from the endoscope provides rich information to support context-awareness for next-generation intelligent surgical systems. To achieve accurate perception and automatic manipulation during the procedure, learning based technique is a promising way, which enables advanced image analysis and scene understanding in recent years. However, learning such models highly relies on large-scale, high-quality, and multi-task labelled data. This is currently a bottleneck for the topic, as available public dataset is still extremely limited in the field of CAI. In this paper, we present and release the first integrated dataset (named AutoLaparo) with multiple image-based perception tasks to facilitate learning-based automation in hysterectomy surgery. Our AutoLaparo dataset is developed based on full-length videos of entire hysterectomy procedures. Specifically, three different yet highly correlated tasks are formulated in the dataset, including surgical workflow recognition, laparoscope motion prediction, and instrument and key anatomy segmentation. In addition, we provide experimental results with state-of-the-art models as reference benchmarks for further model developments and evaluations on this dataset. SemAffiNet: Semantic-Affine Transformation for Point Cloud Segmentation

Conventional point cloud semantic segmentation methods usually employ an encoder-decoder architecture, where mid-level features are locally aggregated to extract geometric information. However, the over-reliance on these class-agnostic local geometric representations may raise confusion between local parts from different categories that are similar in appearance or spatially adjacent. To address this issue, we argue that mid-level features can be further enhanced with semantic information, and propose semantic-affine transformation that transforms features of mid-level points belonging to different categories with class-specific affine parameters. Based on this technique, we propose SemAffiNet for point cloud semantic segmentation, which utilizes the attention mechanism in the Transformer module to implicitly and explicitly capture global structural knowledge within local parts for overall comprehension of each category. We conduct extensive experiments on the ScanNetV2 and NYUv2 datasets, and evaluate semantic-affine transformation on various 3D point cloud and 2D image segmentation baselines, where both qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate the superiority and generalization ability of our proposed approach. Code is available at https://github.com/wangzy22/SemAffiNet.

A Roadmap for Big Model

With the rapid development of deep learning, training Big Models (BMs) for multiple downstream tasks becomes a popular paradigm. Researchers have achieved various outcomes in the construction of BMs and the BM application in many fields. At present, there is a lack of research work that sorts out the overall progress of BMs and guides the follow-up research. In this paper, we cover not only the BM technologies themselves but also the prerequisites for BM training and applications with BMs, dividing the BM review into four parts: Resource, Models, Key Technologies and Application. We introduce 16 specific BM-related topics in those four parts, they are Data, Knowledge, Computing System, Parallel Training System, Language Model, Vision Model, Multi-modal Model, Theory&Interpretability, Commonsense Reasoning, Reliability&Security, Governance, Evaluation, Machine Translation, Text Generation, Dialogue and Protein Research. In each topic, we summarize clearly the current studies and propose some future research directions. At the end of this paper, we conclude the further development of BMs in a more general view.

Deep Graphic FBSDEs for Opinion Dynamics Stochastic Control

In this paper, we present a scalable deep learning approach to solve opinion dynamics stochastic optimal control problems with mean field term coupling in the dynamics and cost function. Our approach relies on the probabilistic representation of the solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman partial differential equation. Grounded on the nonlinear version of the Feynman-Kac lemma, the solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman partial differential equation are linked to the solution of Forward-Backward Stochastic Differential Equations. These equations can be solved numerically using a novel deep neural network with architecture tailored to the problem in consideration. The resulting algorithm is tested on a polarized opinion consensus experiment. The large-scale (10K) agents experiment validates the scalability and generalizability of our algorithm. The proposed framework opens up the possibility for future applications on extremely large-scale problems.

Opinion Dynamics Steering using Stochastic Search

In this paper, we apply the stochastic search dynamic optimization framework for steering opinion dynamics in a partially active population. The framework is grounded on stochastic optimization theory and relies on sampling of candidate solutions from distributions of the exponential family. We derive the distribution parameter update for an open loop, a feedback, and a novel adaptive feedback policy. All three policies are tested on two different opinion dynamics steering scenarios in simulation and compared against a hand designed feedback policy. The results showcase the effectiveness the framework for opinion dynamics control and the robustness of the adaptive feedback policy with respect to the active agent set size.

Maximum Entropy Differential Dynamic Programming

In this paper, we present a novel maximum entropy formulation of the Differential Dynamic Programming algorithm and derive two variants using unimodal and multimodal value functions parameterizations. By combining the maximum entropy Bellman equations with a particular approximation of the cost function, we are able to obtain a new formulation of Differential Dynamic Programming which is able to escape from local minima via exploration with a multimodal policy. To demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm, we provide experimental results using four systems on tasks that are represented by cost functions with multiple local minima and compare them against vanilla Differential Dynamic Programming. Furthermore, we discuss connections with previous work on the linearly solvable stochastic control framework and its extensions in relation to compositionality.

Data-guided Treatment Recommendation with Feature Scores

Despite the availability of large amounts of genomics data, medical treatment recommendations have not successfully used them. In this paper, we consider the utility of high dimensional genomic-clinical data and nonparametric methods for making cancer treatment recommendations. This builds upon the framework of the individualized treatment rule [Qian and Murphy 2011] but we aim to overcome their method's limitations, specifically in the instances when the method encounters a large number of covariates and an issue of model misspecification. We tackle this problem using a dimension reduction method, namely Sliced Inverse Regression (SIR, [Li 1991]), with a rich class of models for the treatment response. Notably, SIR defines a feature space for high-dimensional data, offering an advantage similar to those found in the popular neural network models. With the features obtained from SIR, a simple visualization is used to compare different treatment options and present the recommended treatment. Additionally, we derive the consistency and the convergence rate of the proposed recommendation approach through a value function. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through simulation studies and the promising results from a real-data example of the treatment of multiple myeloma.

Stochastic optimization for learning quantum state feedback control

High fidelity state preparation represents a fundamental challenge in the application of quantum technology. While the majority of optimal control approaches use feedback to improve the controller, the controller itself often does not incorporate explicit state dependence. Here, we present a general framework for training deep feedback networks for open quantum systems with quantum nondemolition measurement that allows a variety of system and control structures that are prohibitive by many other techniques and can in effect react to unmodeled effects through nonlinear filtering. We demonstrate that this method is efficient due to inherent parallelizability, robust to open system interactions, and outperforms landmark state feedback control results in simulation.
