A VAE-Driven Multi-Task Satellite-Aided Semantic Communication Framework for 6G-Enabled Connected Autonomous Vehicles

The development of smart transportation systems and the introduction of 6G wireless communication technologies have significantly changed vehicle network topologies. Future connected autonomous vehicle (CAV) networks require bandwidth-efficient, reliable, and low-latency communication for safety-critical applications such as traffic sign recognition and decision-making. Conventional communication systems transmit raw data regardless of task relevance, which is inefficient in resource-constrained satellite channels where uplink bandwidth is scarce and propagation losses are large. Semantic communication addresses this limitation by transmitting task-relevant information instead of full signal representations. It extracts and conveys essential semantic features and leverages deep learning to optimize task performance at the receiver. Therefore, we present a Variational Autoencoder (VAE)-based multi-task semantic communication framework for satellite-assisted autonomous driving. Unlike deterministic autoencoder-based methods, the proposed model uses probabilistic latent representations for more robust and efficient encoding. The learned features are transmitted over noisy wireless channels to perform traffic sign reconstruction and classification. The framework is trained end-to-end to jointly optimize both tasks. Results show that the proposed approach achieves significant bandwidth reduction of up to 87.23\% to 98.17\% while maintaining stable performance across varying signal-to-noise ratio conditions.

Human-In-The-Loop Machine Learning for Safe and Ethical Autonomous Vehicles: Principles, Challenges, and Opportunities

Machine Learning (ML) has become central to Autonomous Vehicles (AVs), supporting perception, prediction, planning, control, and decision-making in dynamic environments. However, achieving full autonomy in cluttered and complex scenarios, such as intricate intersections, diverse scenes, varied trajectories, and complex missions, remains challenging; moreover, data labeling is still a major bottleneck. These limitations motivate Human-in-the-Loop Machine Learning (HITL-ML), in which human input is incorporated through validation, annotation, task organization, reward design, action correction, preference feedback, and supervisory intervention. To advance safe and ethical autonomy, this paper presents a tutorial survey of HITL-ML for AVs, focusing on Curriculum Learning (CL), Human-in-the-Loop Reinforcement Learning (HITL-RL), Human-in-the-Loop Large Language Models (HITL-LLMs), Active Learning (AL), and ethical principles. We first review CL methods that structure training from simple to complex tasks, covering navigation, path planning, obstacle avoidance, data collection, landing, intersection handling, motion planning, and UAV swarm coordination. We then examine HITL-RL through reward shaping, action injection, demonstrations, preference-based feedback, and interactive learning, emphasizing improved learning efficiency, safer policy exploration, and real-time intervention. Next, we review HITL-LLM through collaboration and oversight and specify key challenges. After that, we discuss AL for perception, anomaly detection, semantic mapping, object detection, vehicle recognition, and security-related classification. Ethical principles are reviewed as technical requirements for transparency, accountability, human oversight, safety, security, regulatory compliance, and reliability of human input.

Schwarz Information Criterion Aided MAB for Resource Allocation in Dynamic LoRa System

This paper proposes a lightweight distributed learning method for transmission parameter selection in Long Range (LoRa) networks that can adapt to dynamic communication environments. In the proposed method, each LoRa End Device (ED) employs the Upper Confidence Bound (UCB)1-tuned algorithm to select transmission parameters including channel, transmission power, and bandwidth. The transmission parameters are selected based on the ACKnowledgment (ACK) feedback returned from the gateway after each transmission and the corresponding transmission energy consumption. Hence, it enables devices to simultaneously optimize transmission success rate and energy efficiency in a fully distributed manner. However, although UCB1-tuned based method is effective under stationary conditions, it suffers from slow adaptation in dynamic environments due to its strong reliance on historical observations. To address this limitation, we integrate the Schwarz Information Criterion (SIC) to our proposed method. SIC is adopted because it enables low-cost detection of changes in the communication environment, making it suitable for implementation on resource-constrained LoRa EDs. When a change is detected by SIC, the learning history of UCB1-tuned is reset, allowing rapid re-learning under the new conditions. Experimental results using real LoRa devices demonstrate that the proposed method achieves superior transmission success rate, energy efficiency, and adaptability compared with the conventional UCB1-tuned algorithm without SIC.

Bistatic Integrated Sensing and Communication in the Presence of a Disco Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface: Disruption, Enhancement, or Both?

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is widely regarded as one of the key enabling technologies for future sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication systems. In this work, we investigate a bistatic ISAC system in the presence of a disco reconfigurable intelligent surface (DRIS), whose random and time-varying reflection coefficients emulate a "disco ball." The introduction of the DRIS breaks the underlying assumption in existing ISAC systems that the sensing and communication channels remain static or quasi-static within the channel coherence time. We first develop a bistatic system model incorporating the DRIS and characterize all involved wireless channels. Then, an ISAC waveform design that balances sensing and communication performance is proposed by formulating a Pareto optimization problem, where the trade-off is controlled through a tunable factor. Communication and sensing performance in the bistatic ISAC system are quantified by the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB), respectively. To quantify the impact of the DRIS on the bistatic ISAC system, we derive the statistical characteristics of DRIS-induced active channel aging (ACA) channels for communications and the cascaded DRIS-based sensing channel. Then, we establish a theoretical lower bound on the SINR and closed-form CRLB expressions in the presence of a DRIS. The analysis reveals several distinctive properties of the DRIS in bistatic ISAC systems. In particular, the DRIS degrades communication performance significantly due to the introduction of ACA interference. In contrast, with respect to sensing performance, the DRIS decreases the estimation accuracy of the angle of departure (AoD) while concurrently enhancing that of the angle of arrival (AoA). Numerical results validate the derived theoretical analysis and confirm these DRIS-induced behaviors.

Agentic-SecPBFT: Agentic AI-Driven Proactive Security Framework for Wireless PBFT Consensus in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks

The standard Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT) protocol, designed for stable, wired environments, exhibits critical vulnerabilities when deployed in settings like mobile ad-hoc networks, thus making it susceptible to sophisticated threats such as Sybil attacks, Byzantine collusion, and message manipulation. Existing static defense mechanisms are ill-equipped to handle the intelligent and coordinated nature of these attacks. To address this challenge, this paper leverages the Agentic AI paradigm to build a distributed multi-agent system in which each consensus node is equipped with an intelligent agent. These agents employ a hierarchical Multi-Agent Deep Q-Network (MADQN) algorithm to learn and execute proactive security policies in real-time. By observing local network behavior, message consistency, and dynamically maintained reputation scores, the agents collaboratively identify suspicious behavior and recommend defensive actions under standard PBFT quorum and membership rules, thereby improving the integrity of the consensus process. We refer to the resulting framework as Agentic-SecPBFT. Then, we formally model key attack vectors and conduct extensive simulations. The results demonstrate that Agentic-SecPBFT reaches a 95.0% attack detection rate with a 1.8% false positive rate. Compared with mainstream PBFT variants, it achieves 3.1* higher throughput with 56% lower latency on average under 33% malicious nodes, offering a robust and adaptive security solution for decentralized wireless systems.

Grid-Interactive Thermal Management of AI Data Centers via Contextual Distributionally Robust Optimization

Thermal management in AI data centers is increasingly challenged by bursty workloads and uncertain heat generation. To prevent thermal violations, existing cooling strategies either enforce conservative, rigid bounds that severely limit grid responsiveness, or rely on forecast-driven controllers that perform poorly under AI workload uncertainty and distribution shifts. To overcome the above challenges, this paper proposes a Contextual Distributionally Robust Optimization (CDRO) framework for grid-interactive cooling control. Unlike standard DRO with fixed ambiguity sets, the proposed approach dynamically adapts the Wasserstein radius using real-time AI and grid context. This safely shrinks uncertainty bounds during stable regimes, unlocking deep demand-side flexibility. Theoretically, we formulate the control as an infinite-dimensional inf-sup problem, derive an exact tractable reformulation for the Wasserstein worst-case expected-cost term, and then derive a tractable conservative deterministic counterpart for the Distributionally Robust Conditional Value at Risk (DR-CVaR) thermal safety constraint. Solved via a scalable nested Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) algorithm, the CDRO controller achieves near-zero thermal violations under extreme workload spikes in high-fidelity EnergyPlus co-simulations. Simultaneously, it reduces the operational cost premium of robustness by approximately 13.7 percentage points relative to standard Min-Max Model Predictive Control (MPC).

LEOSTP: A Spatio-Temporal Traffic Prediction Framework for LEO Satellite Networks

With the evolution of next-generation mobile communication networks and the commercial boom of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, globally covered satellite networks are gradually becoming a crucial infrastructure for massive user access and seamless connectivity. Accurate traffic prediction is crucial for maintaining the quality of service (QoS) and resource allocation efficiency in satellite networks. However, existing methods struggle to effectively address the three major challenges of LEO networks: highly complex temporal dynamics caused by satellite cross-regional movement, multivariate dependencies in multi-satellite collaboration, and strong spatial heterogeneity driven by user distribution, human activity intensity, and local geographic environments. In this article, we propose a LEO Satellite Traffic Predictor (LEOSTP) framework, a diffusion model-based end-to-end model that forecasts future satellite traffic by jointly leveraging historical traffic patterns and contextual characteristics of the corresponding service regions. The framework consists of two core modules: 1) The general traffic feature extractor module combines the diffusion process with a Transformer architecture to model the multi-scale temporal features of the traffic itself. 2) The external condition encoder module integrates geographic semantic information such as population distribution, point-of-interest (POI) distribution, and local time into the prediction process through a Transformer-based encoder. In this way, the model captures the deep correlation between the external environment and traffic dynamics. Experimental results based on large-scale simulated constellation data show that LEOSTP significantly outperforms traditional statistical models such as ARIMA and SVR, and classical sequence models including LSTM and Transformer, in prediction accuracy.

Joint Visible Light and Backscatter Communications for Proximity-Based Indoor Asset Tracking Enabled by Energy-Neutral Devices

In next-generation wireless systems, providing location-based mobile computing services for energy-neutral devices has become a crucial objective for the provision of sustainable Internet of Things (IoT). Visible light positioning (VLP) has gained great research attention as a complementary method to radio frequency (RF) solutions since it can leverage ubiquitous lighting infrastructure. However, conventional VLP receivers often rely on photodetectors or cameras that are power-hungry, complex, and expensive. To address this challenge, we propose a hybrid indoor asset tracking system that integrates visible light communication (VLC) and backscatter communication (BC) within a simultaneous lightwave information and power transfer (SLIPT) framework. We design a low-complexity and energy-neutral IoT node, namely backscatter device (BD) which harvests energy from light-emitting diode (LED) access points, and then modulates and reflects ambient RF carriers to indicate its location within particular VLC cells. We present a multi-cell VLC deployment with frequency division multiplexing (FDM) method that mitigates interference among LED access points by assigning them distinct frequency pairs based on a four-color map scheduling principle. We develop a lightweight particle filter (PF) tracking algorithm at an edge RF reader, where the fusion of proximity reports and the received backscatter signal strength are employed to track the BD. Experimental results show that this approach achieves the positioning error of 0.318 m at 50th percentile and 0.634 m at 90th percentile, while avoiding the use of complex photodetectors and active RF synthesizing components at the energy-neutral IoT node. By demonstrating robust performance in multiple indoor trajectories, the proposed solution enables scalable, cost-effective, and energy-neutral indoor tracking for pervasive and edge-assisted IoT applications.

The rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices in the sixth generation (6G) wireless networks raises significant sustainability and scalability challenges due to energy consumption, deployment complexity, and environmental impact. Ambient IoT (A-IoT), leveraging ambient energy harvesting (EH) for batteryless device operation, has emerged as a promising solution to address these challenges. Among various EH and communication techniques, visible light communication (VLC) integrated with ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) offers remarkable advantages, including energy neutrality, high reliability, and enhanced security. In this article, we propose a joint VLC-AmBC architecture, emphasizing fundamental concepts, system designs, and practical implementations. We explore potential applications in environmental monitoring, healthcare, smart logistics, and secure communications. We present proof-of-concept demonstrations for three distinct types of ambient backscatter devices (AmBDs): EH-Only, VLC-Relay, and VLC-Control. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of implementing joint VLC-AmBC systems, highlighting their practical viability across various deployment scenarios. Finally, we outline future research directions, including integrated sensing and communication, as well as optimized energy-efficient deployment. Open issues, such as large-scale deployment challenges, are also discussed, thereby providing a clear roadmap for future developments in joint VLC-AmBC-enabled A-IoT ecosystems.

Parity Selection Rule for Information and Dissipation in Driven Steady States

Tight equalities between symmetric information and entropy production in driven steady states remain elusive. We show that they are forbidden by a parity selection rule for rotation-driven linear nonequilibrium steady states. Whenever the relaxation and diffusion matrices commute, the snapshot mutual information between two time slices is exactly even under drive reversal, and parity violation rises linearly in the commutator norm when alignment is broken. Full isotropy strengthens this to drive-independence, and the planar mutual information takes the closed-form value of about 0.145 nats. Under the same alignment, the entropy production is exactly quadratic in the drive, and its prefactor admits an explicit closed form in the traces and determinant of the two matrices. The orthogonality of even and odd sectors leaves only one-sided thermodynamic-uncertainty bounds. The rule rests on the rotational symmetry of the drift alone and survives heavy-tailed isotropic stable noise with tail index below two, where variance-based bounds become vacuous. A falsifiable test is proposed on an electrical Brownian gyrator augmented for independent drive control with circuit-level stable-noise injection.

Holographic Beamforming for Semantic Communication

Holographic beamforming enabled by metamaterial antennas has been proposed to facilitate spatial multiplexing at low hardware cost and low power consumption. However, existing holographic beamforming schemes are mainly developed for conventional bit-communication systems, which have not considered semantic-level importance and thus cannot be directly applied to support semantic communication. Specifically, in conventional bit communication, all bits are treated as equally important. In contrast, in semantic communication, different semantic information contribute unequally to task completion and therefore has different degrees of importance, with more important information requiring higher transmission quality. Ignoring semantic importance in holographic beamforming causes mismatches between importance of semantic information and its received SNR, thus degrading performances. In this paper, we propose a semantic-importance-aware holographic beamforming scheme enabled by metamaterial antennas with tunable radiated amplitudes to support semantic communication. It is challenging to design semantic-aware holographic beamforming schemes due to non-trivial modeling of the impact of semantic importance and unique amplitude-controlled structures of holographic beamforming. To address this, we characterize the dependence of semantic communication performance on semantic importance and received SNR via data fitting, and design a semantic-aware holographic beamforming algorithm to ensure reliable delivery of highly important semantic information. Simulation results validate effectiveness of the proposed method.

Semantic-Aware Command and Control Transmission for Multi-UAVs

Uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) have played an important role in the low-altitude economy and have been used in various applications. However, with the increasing number of UAVs and explosive wireless data, the existing bit-oriented communication network has approached the Shannon capacity, which cannot satisfy the quality of service (QoS) with ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) requirements for command and control (C\&C) transmission in bit-oriented UAV communication networks. To address this issue, we propose a novel semantic-aware C\&C transmission for multi-UAVs under limited wireless resources. Specifically, we leverage semantic similarity to measure the variation in C\&C messages for each UAV over continuous transmission time intervals (TTIs) and capture the correlation of C\&C messages among UAVs, enabling multicast transmission. Based on the semantic similarity and the importance of UAV commands, we design a trigger function to quantify the QoS of UAVs. Then, to maximize the long-term QoS and exploit multicast opportunities of C\&C messages induced by semantic similarity, we develop a proximal policy optimization (PPO) algorithm to jointly determine the transmission mode (unicast/multicast/idle) and the allocation of limited resource blocks (RBs) between a base station (BS) and UAVs. Experimental results show that our proposed semantic-aware framework significantly increases transmission efficiency and improves effectiveness compared with bit-oriented UAV transmission.

Personalized 3D Spatiotemporal Trajectory Privacy Protection with Differential and Distortion Geo-Perturbation

The rapid advancement of location-based services (LBSs) in three-dimensional (3D) domains, such as smart cities and intelligent transportation, has raised concerns over 3D spatiotemporal trajectory privacy protection. However, existing research has not fully addressed the risk of attackers exploiting the spatiotemporal correlation of 3D spatiotemporal trajectories and the impact of height information, both of which can potentially lead to significant privacy leakage. To address these issues, this paper proposes a personalized 3D spatiotemporal trajectory privacy protection mechanism, named 3DSTPM. First, we analyze the characteristics of attackers that exploit spatiotemporal correlations between locations in a trajectory and present the attack model. Next, we exploit the complementary characteristics of 3D geo-indistinguishability (3D-GI) and distortion privacy to find a protection location set (PLS) that obscures the real location for all possible locations. To address the issue of privacy accumulation caused by continuous trajectory queries, we propose a Window-based Adaptive Privacy Budget Allocation (W-APBA), which dynamically allocates privacy budgets to all locations in the current PLS based on their predictability and sensitivity. Finally, we perturb the real location using the allocated privacy budget by the PF (Permute-and-Flip) mechanism, effectively balancing privacy protection and Quality of Service (QoS). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed 3DSTPM effectively reduces QoS loss while meeting the user's personalized privacy protection needs.

Energy Efficient Federated Learning with Hyperdimensional Computing over Wireless Communication Networks

In this paper, we investigate a problem of minimizing total energy consumption for secure federated learning (FL) over wireless edge networks. To address the high computational cost and privacy challenges in conventional FL with neural networks (NN) for resource-constrained users, we propose a novel FL with hyperdimensional computing and differential privacy (FL-HDC-DP) framework. In the considered model, each edge user employs hyperdimensional computing (HDC) for local training, which replaces complex neural updates with simple hypervector operations, and applies differential privacy (DP) noise to protect transmitted model information. We optimize the total energy of computation and communication under both latency and privacy constraints. We formulate the problem as an optimization that minimizes the total energy of all users by jointly allocating HDC dimension, transmission time, system bandwidth, transmit power, and CPU frequency. To solve this problem, a sigmoid-variant function is proposed to characterize the relationship between the HDC dimension and the convergence rounds required to reach a target accuracy. Based on this model, we develop two alternating optimization algorithms, where closed-form expressions for time, frequency, bandwidth, and power allocations are derived at each iteration. Since the iterative algorithm requires a feasible initialization, we construct a feasibility problem and obtain feasible initial resource parameters by solving a per round transmission time minimization problem. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed FL-HDC-DP framework achieves up to 83.3% total energy reduction compared with the baseline, while attaining about 90% accuracy in approximately 3.5X fewer communication rounds than the NN baseline.

Cross-Domain Federated Semantic Communication with Global Representation Alignment and Domain-Aware Aggregation

Semantic communication can significantly improve bandwidth utilization in wireless systems by exploiting the meaning behind raw data. However, the advancements achieved through semantic communication are closely dependent on the development of deep learning (DL) models for joint source-channel coding (JSCC) encoder/decoder techniques, which require a large amount of data for training. To address this data-intensive nature of DL models, federated learning (FL) has been proposed to train a model in a distributed manner, where the server broadcasts the DL model to clients in the network for training with their local data. However, the conventional FL approaches suffer from catastrophic degradation when client data are from different domains. In contrast, in this paper, a novel FL framework is proposed to address this domain shift by constructing the global representation, which aligns with the local features of the clients to preserve the semantics of different data domains. In addition, the dominance problem of client domains with a large number of samples is identified and, then, addressed with a domain-aware aggregation approach. This work is the first to consider the domain shift in training the semantic communication system for the image reconstruction task. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the model-contrastive FL (MOON) framework by 0.5 for PSNR values under three domains at an SNR of 1 dB, and this gap continues to widen as the channel quality improves.

Deep Mixture of Experts Network for Resource Optimization in Aerial-Terrestrial CF-mMIMO Systems under URLLC

As a critical component of sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks, ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) is expected to support real-time and reliable information exchange in low-altitude environments. However, achieving URLLC often incurs significant resource overhead, including increased bandwidth consumption, higher transmit power, and denser access point (AP) deployment, which pose significant challenges to both spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). Besides, existing iterative optimization algorithms are computationally intensive and struggle to meet the latency requirements of URLLC. To address these challenges, we propose a hybrid aerial-terrestrial cell-free massive MIMO (CF-mMIMO) network to support diverse services, along with a channel prediction network and a deep mixture of experts (MoE) network for uplink optimization. First, we design a channel prediction network (CP-Net) to mitigate channel aging caused by high-mobility user equipment (UE). CP-Net employs three Transformer-based sub-networks for aged channel state information (CSI) prediction, while a channel quality-aware loss function is introduced to improve the prediction accuracy of weak links. Based on the predicted CSI, we develop a deep MoE network (MoE-Net) for power allocation comprising three expert models targeting different objectives. Then, we introduce a weighted gating network (WT-Net) to learn an efficient adaptive combination of expert outputs. The proposed framework better captures heterogeneous UE requirements and improves communication performance under URLLC constraints. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

On Privacy-Preserving Image Transmission in Low-Altitude Networks: A Swin Transformer-Based Framework with Federated Learning

The rapid development of low-altitude economy has driven the proliferation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) applications, including logistics, inspection, and emergency response. However, transmitting high-volume image data from UAVs to ground stations faces significant challenges due to limited bandwidth and stringent privacy requirements. To address these issues, a Semantic Communication (SC) framework based on Federated Learning (FL) is proposed for efficient and privacy-preserving image transmission. A Swin Transformer-based Semantic Communication (STSC) architecture is designed to extract multi-scale semantic features under constrained bandwidth conditions. Dedicated communication and computing nodes are deployed on UAVs to enhance real-time coverage and flexibility. Meanwhile, a FL mechanism enables global model training across distributed devices without sharing raw data, thus preserving user privacy. Simulation experiments conducted on the CIFAR-10 dataset demonstrate that the proposed STSC framework achieves at least 5.7 dB improvement in Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) compared to DeepJSCC baselines, while also showing superior convergence and generalization performance. The framework effectively integrates UAV-assisted deployment with SC and privacy protection, offering a practical solution for bandwidth-constrained image transmission in low-altitude networks.

Resolution Information: Limits of Ambiguity Resolution for Generative Communication

In generative communication, the transmitter sends a compact generative description, such as model parameters or a latent representation, rather than raw data. The receiver uses this description to form a posterior belief over the underlying state and to resolve semantic ambiguity: which interpretation, decision, or action is supported by the received representation? Inspired by Shannon's geometric view of communication as uncertainty resolution, we introduce resolution information as the minimum information update, measured in nats, required to move the receiver's posterior belief into a low-ambiguity semantic region. Our work yields three main results. First, when the receiver can form any posterior belief, corresponding to the ideal unconstrained case, resolution information reduces to a binary divergence that depends only on each region's prior probability. In this case, the shape of the regions is irrelevant. Under repeated sampling, ambiguity decays exponentially with an exponent equal to the resolution information, giving it an operational meaning as an ambiguity exponent. Second, when the generative representation constrains the posterior family, as in practice, geometry becomes operational and can create irreducible ambiguity floors: half-spaces remain resolvable, whereas polytope-type regions can exhibit residual ambiguity that no amount of additional information can remove. These results reveal a fundamental departure from classical channel coding. In Shannon theory, codes can be designed so that decoding regions separate messages and error probability vanishes below capacity. In generative communication, the model itself induces a constrained posterior geometry that may prevent asymptotic ambiguity resolution. The resulting limit is not on rate, but on resolvability itself.
