SLAM for Multiple Extended Targets using 5G Signal

5th Generation (5G) mobile communication systems operating at around 28 GHz have the potential to be applied to simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). Most existing 5G SLAM studies estimate environment as many point targets, instead of extended targets. In this paper, we focus on the performance analysis of 5G SLAM for multiple extended targets. To evaluate the mapping performance of multiple extended targets, a new mapping error metric, named extended targets generalized optimal sub-pattern assignment (ET-GOPSA), is proposed in this paper. Compared with the existing metrics, ET-GOPSA not only considers the accuracy error of target estimation, the cost of missing detection, the cost of false detection, but also the cost of matching the estimated point with the extended target. To evaluate the performance of 5G signal in SLAM, we analyze and simulate the mapping error of 5G signal sensing by ET-GOPSA. Simulation results show that, under the condition of SNR = 10 dB, 5G signal sensing can barely meet to meet the requirements of SLAM for multiple extended targets with the carrier frequency of 28 GHz, the bandwidth of 1.23 GHz, and the antenna size of 32.

ISAC 4D Imaging System Based on 5G Downlink Millimeter Wave Signal

Integrated Sensing and Communication(ISAC) has become a key technology for the 5th generation (5G) and 6th generation (6G) wireless communications due to its high spectrum utilization efficiency. Utilizing infrastructure such as 5G Base Stations (BS) to realize environmental imaging and reconstruction is important for promoting the construction of smart cities. Current 4D imaging methods utilizing Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) based Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) are not suitable for ISAC scenarios due to the higher bandwidth occupation and lower resolution. We propose a 4D (3D-Coordinates, Velocity) imaging method with higher sensing accuracy based on 2D-FFT with 2D-MUSIC utilizing standard 5G Downlink (DL) millimeter wave (mmWave) signals. To improve the sensing precision we also design a transceiver antenna array element arrangement scheme based on MIMO virtual aperture technique. We further propose a target detection algorithm based on multi-dimensional Constant False Alarm (CFAR) detection, which optimizes the ISAC imaging signal processing flow and reduces the computational pressure of signal processing. Simulation results show that our proposed method has better imaging results. The code is publicly available at https://github.com/MrHaobolu/ISAC\_4D\_IMaging.git.

Attribute Simulation for Item Embedding Enhancement in Multi-interest Recommendation

Although multi-interest recommenders have achieved significant progress in the matching stage, our research reveals that existing models tend to exhibit an under-clustered item embedding space, which leads to a low discernibility between items and hampers item retrieval. This highlights the necessity for item embedding enhancement. However, item attributes, which serve as effective and straightforward side information for enhancement, are either unavailable or incomplete in many public datasets due to the labor-intensive nature of manual annotation tasks. This dilemma raises two meaningful questions: 1. Can we bypass manual annotation and directly simulate complete attribute information from the interaction data? And 2. If feasible, how to simulate attributes with high accuracy and low complexity in the matching stage? In this paper, we first establish an inspiring theoretical feasibility that the item-attribute correlation matrix can be approximated through elementary transformations on the item co-occurrence matrix. Then based on formula derivation, we propose a simple yet effective module, SimEmb (Item Embedding Enhancement via Simulated Attribute), in the multi-interest recommendation of the matching stage to implement our findings. By simulating attributes with the co-occurrence matrix, SimEmb discards the item ID-based embedding and employs the attribute-weighted summation for item embedding enhancement. Comprehensive experiments on four benchmark datasets demonstrate that our approach notably enhances the clustering of item embedding and significantly outperforms SOTA models with an average improvement of 25.59% on Recall@20.

Carrier Aggregation Enabled Integrated Sensing and Communication Signal Design and Processing

The future mobile communication systems will support intelligent applications such as Internet of Vehicles (IoV) and Extended Reality (XR). Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) is regarded as one of the key technologies satisfying the high data rate communication and highly accurate sensing for these intelligent applications in future mobile communication systems. With the explosive growth of wireless devices and services, the shortage of spectrum resources leads to the fragmentation of available frequency bands for ISAC systems, which degrades sensing performance. Facing the above challenges, this paper proposes a Carrier Aggregation (CA)-based ISAC signal aggregating high and low-frequency bands to improve the sensing performance, where the CA-based ISAC signal can use four different aggregated pilot structures for sensing. Then, an ISAC signal processing algorithm with Compressed Sensing (CS) is proposed and the Fast Iterative Shrinkage-Thresholding Algorithm (FISTA) is used to solve the reconfiguration convex optimization problem. Finally, the Cram'er-Rao Lower Bounds (CRLBs) are derived for the CA-based ISAC signal. Simulation results show that CA efficiently improves the accuracy of range and velocity estimation.

Capacity and Delay of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Networks with Mobility

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are widely exploited in environment monitoring, search-and-rescue, etc. However, the mobility and short flight duration of UAVs bring challenges for UAV networking. In this paper, we study the UAV networks with n UAVs acting as aerial sensors. UAVs generally have short flight duration and need to frequently get energy replenishment from the control station. Hence the returning UAVs bring the data of the UAVs along the returning paths to the control station with a store-carry-and-forward (SCF) mode. A critical range for the distance between the UAV and the control station is discovered. Within the critical range, the per-node capacity of the SCF mode is O(n/log n) times higher than that of the multi-hop mode. However, the per-node capacity of the SCF mode outside the critical range decreases with the distance between the UAV and the control station. To eliminate the critical range, a mobility control scheme is proposed such that the capacity scaling laws of the SCF mode are the same for all UAVs, which improves the capacity performance of UAV networks. Moreover, the delay of the SCF mode is derived. The impact of the size of the entire region, the velocity of UAVs, the number of UAVs and the flight duration of UAVs on the delay of SCF mode is analyzed. This paper reveals that the mobility and short flight duration of UAVs have beneficial effects on the performance of UAV networks, which may motivate the study of SCF schemes for UAV networks.

Spectrum Sharing between UAV-based Wireless Mesh Networks and Ground Networks

The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based wireless mesh networks can economically provide wireless services for the areas with disasters. However, the capacity of air-to-air communications is limited due to the multi-hop transmissions. In this paper, the spectrum sharing between UAV-based wireless mesh networks and ground networks is studied to improve the capacity of the UAV networks. Considering the distribution of UAVs as a three-dimensional (3D) homogeneous Poisson point process (PPP) within a vertical range, the stochastic geometry is applied to analyze the impact of the height of UAVs, the transmit power of UAVs, the density of UAVs and the vertical range, etc., on the coverage probability of ground network user and UAV network user, respectively. The optimal height of UAVs is numerically achieved in maximizing the capacity of UAV networks with the constraint of the coverage probability of ground network user. This paper provides a basic guideline for the deployment of UAV-based wireless mesh networks.

Integrated Sensing and Communication enabled Multiple Base Stations Cooperative Sensing Towards 6G

Driven by the intelligent applications of sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication systems such as smart city and autonomous driving, which connect the physical and cyber space, the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) brings a revolutionary change to the base stations (BSs) of 6G by integrating radar sensing and communication in the same hardware and wireless resource. However, with the requirements of long-range and accurate sensing in the applications of smart city and autonomous driving, the ISAC enabled single BS still has a limitation in the sensing range and accuracy. With the networked infrastructures of mobile communication systems, multi-BS cooperative sensing is a natural choice satisfying the requirement of long-range and accurate sensing. In this article, the framework of multi-BS cooperative sensing is proposed, breaking through the limitation of single-BS sensing. The enabling technologies, including unified ISAC performance metrics, ISAC signal design and optimization, interference management, cooperative sensing algorithms, are introduced in details. The performance evaluation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of multi-BS cooperative sensing schemes. With ISAC enabled multi-BS cooperative sensing (ISAC-MCS), the intelligent infrastructures connecting physical and cyber space can be established, ushering the era of 6G promoting the intelligence of everything.

Joint Localization and Communication Enhancement in Uplink Integrated Sensing and Communications System with Clock Asynchronism

In this paper, we propose a joint single-base localization and communication enhancement scheme for the uplink (UL) integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system with asynchronism, which can achieve accurate single-base localization of user equipment (UE) and significantly improve the communication reliability despite the existence of timing offset (TO) due to the clock asynchronism between UE and base station (BS). Our proposed scheme integrates the CSI enhancement into the multiple signal classification (MUSIC)-based AoA estimation and thus imposes no extra complexity on the ISAC system. We further exploit a MUSIC-based range estimation method and prove that it can suppress the time-varying TO-related phase terms. Exploiting the AoA and range estimation of UE, we can estimate the location of UE. Finally, we propose a joint CSI and data signals-based localization scheme that can coherently exploit the data and the CSI signals to improve the AoA and range estimation, which further enhances the single-base localization of UE. The extensive simulation results show that the enhanced CSI can achieve equivalent bit error rate performance to the minimum mean square error (MMSE) CSI estimator. The proposed joint CSI and data signals-based localization scheme can achieve decimeter-level localization accuracy despite the existing clock asynchronism and improve the localization mean square error (MSE) by about 8 dB compared with the maximum likelihood (ML)-based benchmark method.

Modeling and Design of the Communication Sensing and Control Coupled Closed-Loop Industrial System

With the advent of 5G era, factories are transitioning towards wireless networks to break free from the limitations of wired networks. In 5G-enabled factories, unmanned automatic devices such as automated guided vehicles and robotic arms complete production tasks cooperatively through the periodic control loops. In such loops, the sensing data is generated by sensors, and transmitted to the control center through uplink wireless communications. The corresponding control commands are generated and sent back to the devices through downlink wireless communications. Since wireless communications, sensing and control are tightly coupled, there are big challenges on the modeling and design of such closed-loop systems. In particular, existing theoretical tools of these functionalities have different modelings and underlying assumptions, which make it difficult for them to collaborate with each other. Therefore, in this paper, an analytical closed-loop model is proposed, where the performances and resources of communication, sensing and control are deeply related. To achieve the optimal control performance, a co-design of communication resource allocation and control method is proposed, inspired by the model predictive control algorithm. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the relationships between the resources and control performances.

Channel-robust Automatic Modulation Classification Using Spectral Quotient Cumulants

Automatic modulation classification (AMC) is to identify the modulation format of the received signal corrupted by the channel effects and noise. Most existing works focus on the impact of noise while relatively little attention has been paid to the impact of channel effects. However, the instability posed by multipath fading channels leads to significant performance degradation. To mitigate the adverse effects of the multipath channel, we propose a channel-robust modulation classification framework named spectral quotient cumulant classification (SQCC) for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Specifically, we first transform the received signal to the spectral quotient (SQ) sequence by spectral circular shift division operations. Secondly, an outlier detector is proposed to filter the outliers in the SQ sequence. At last, we extract spectral quotient cumulants (SQCs) from the filtered SQ sequence as the inputs to train the artificial neural network (ANN) classifier and use the trained ANN to make the final decisions. Simulation results show that our proposed SQCC method exhibits classification robustness and superiority under various unknown Rician multipath fading channels compared with other existing methods. Specifically, the SQCC method achieves nearly 90% classification accuracy at the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 4dB when testing under multiple channels but training under AWGN channel.

Sensing-assisted Accurate and Fast Beam Management for Cellular-connected mmWave UAV Network

Beam management, including initial access (IA) and beam tracking, is essential to the millimeter-wave Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) network. However, conventional communication-only and feedback-based schemes suffer a high delay and low accuracy of beam alignment since they only enable the receiver to passively hear the information of the transmitter from the radio domain. This paper presents a novel sensing-assisted beam management approach, the first solution that fully utilizes the information from the visual domain to improve communication performance. We employ both integrated sensing and communication and computer vision techniques and design an extended Kalman filtering method for beam tracking and prediction. Besides, we also propose a novel dual identity association solution to distinguish multiple UAVs in dynamic environments. Real-world experiments and numerical results show that the proposed solution outperforms the conventional methods in IA delay, association accuracy, tracking error, and communication performance.

Collaborative Precoding Design for Adjacent Integrated Sensing and Communication Base Stations

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) base stations can provide communication and wide range sensing information for vehicles via downlink (DL) transmission, thus enhancing vehicle driving safety. One major challenge for realizing high performance communication and sensing is how to deal with the DL mutual interference among adjacent ISAC base stations, which includes not only communication related interference, but also radar sensing related interference. In this paper, we establish a DL mutual interference model of adjacent ISAC base stations, and analyze the relationship for mutual interference channels between communications and radar sensing. To improve the sensing and communication performance, we propose a collaborative precoding design for coordinated adjacent base stations to mitigate the mutual interference under the transmit power constraint and constant modulus constraint, which is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem. We first relax the problem into a convex programming by omitting the rank constraint, and propose a joint optimization algorithm to solve the problem. We furthermore propose a sequential optimization algorithm, which divides the collaborative precoding design problem into four subproblems and finds the optimum via a gradient descent algorithm. Finally, we evaluate the collaborative precoding design algorithms by considering sensing and communication performance via numerical results.

Cooperation Based Joint Active and Passive Sensing with Asynchronous Transceivers for Perceptive Mobile Networks

Perceptive mobile network (PMN) is an emerging concept for next-generation wireless networks capable of conducting integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). A major challenge for realizing high performance sensing in PMNs is how to deal with spatially separated asynchronous transceivers. Asynchronicity results in timing offsets (TOs) and carrier frequency offsets (CFOs), which further cause ambiguity in ranging and velocity sensing. Most existing algorithms mitigate TOs and CFOs based on the line-of-sight (LOS) propagation path between sensing transceivers. However, LOS paths may not exist in realistic scenarios. In this paper, we propose a cooperation based joint active and passive sensing scheme for the non-LOS (NLOS) scenarios having asynchronous transceivers. This scheme relies on the cross-correlation cooperative sensing (CCCS) algorithm, which regards active sensing as a reference and mitigates TOs and CFOs by correlating active and passive sensing information. Another major challenge for realizing high performance sensing in PMNs is how to realize high accuracy angle-of-arrival (AoA) estimation with low complexity. Correspondingly, we propose a low complexity AoA algorithm based on cooperative sensing, which comprises coarse AoA estimation and fine AoA estimation. Analytical and numerical simulation results verify the performance advantages of the proposed CCCS algorithm and the low complexity AoA estimation algorithm.

Spectrum Sharing Towards Delay Deterministic Wireless Network: Delay Performance Analysis

To accommodate Machine-type Communication (MTC) service, the wireless network needs to support low-delay and low-jitter data transmission, realizing delay deterministic wireless network. This paper analyzes the delay and jitter of the wireless network with and without spectrum sharing. When sharing the spectrum of the licensed network, the spectrum band of wireless network can be expanded, such that the delay and jitter of data transmission are reduced. The challenge of this research is to model the relation between the delay/jitter and the parameters such as node distribution, transmit power, and bandwidth, etc. To this end, this paper applies stochastic geometry and queueing theory to analyze the outage probability of the licensed network and the delay performance of the wireless network with and without spectrum sharing. By establishing the M/G/1 queueing model for the queueing of the Base Station (BS) in the wireless network, the downlink delay and jitter are derived. Monte Carlo simulation results show that the spectrum sharing reduces the delay and jitter without causing serious interference to the licensed network, which can lay a foundation for the application of spectrum sharing in delay deterministic wireless network supporting MTC service.

Integrated Sensing and Communication enabled Sensing Base Station: System Design, Beamforming, Interference Cancellation and Performance Analysis

This paper studies the sensing base station (SBS) that has great potential to improve the safety of vehicles and pedestrians on roads. It can detect the targets on the road with communication signals using the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technique. Compared with vehicle-mounted radar, SBS has a better sensing field due to its higher deployment position, which can help solve the problem of sensing blind areas. In this paper, key technologies of SBS are studied, including the beamforming algorithm, beam scanning scheme, and interference cancellation algorithm. To transmit and receive ISAC signals simultaneously, a double-coupling antenna array is applied. The free detection beam and directional communication beam are proposed for joint communication and sensing to meet the requirements of beamwidth and pointing directions. The joint time-space-frequency domain division multiple access algorithm is proposed to cancel the interference of SBS, including multiuser interference and duplex interference between sensing and communication. Finally, the sensing and communication performance of SBS under the industrial scientific medical power limitation is analyzed and simulated. Simulation results show that the communication rate of SBS can reach over 100 Mbps and the range of sensing and communication can reach about 500 m.

Integrated Sensing and Communication Neighbor Discovery for MANET with Gossip Mechanism

Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET), supporting Machine-Type Communication(MTC), has a strong demand for rapid networking. Neighbor Discovery (ND) is a key initial step in configuring MANETs and faces a serious challenge in decreasing convergence time. Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC), as one of the potential key technologies in the 6th Generation (6G) mobile networks, can obtain the sensing data as the priori information to accelerate ND convergence. In order to further reduce the convergence time of ND, this paper introduces the ISAC-enabled gossip mechanism into the ND algorithm. The prior information acquired by ISAC reduces the information redundancy brought by the gossip mechanism and thus decreases the probability of collision, which further improves convergence speed. The average number of discovered nodes within a given period is derived, which is applied as the critical metric to evaluate the performance of ND algorithms. The simulation results confirm the correctness of the theoretical derivation and show that the interplay between the prior mechanisms and the gossip mechanism significantly reduces the convergence time. In addition, to solve the problem of imperfect sensing information, reinforcement learning is applied. Under the constraints of the convergence condition, the non-Reply and non-Stop Algorithm based on Gossip and Q-learning (GQ-nRnS) proposed in this paper not only ensures the completeness of ND, but also maintains a high convergence speed of ND. Compared with the Q-learning-based ND algorithm (Q-ND), the average convergence time of the GQ-nRnS algorithm is reduced by about 66.4%.

Fast Neighbor Discovery for Wireless Ad Hoc Network with Successive Interference Cancellation

Neighbor discovery (ND) is a key step in wireless ad hoc network, which directly affects the efficiency of wireless networking. Improving the speed of ND has always been the goal of ND algorithms. The classical ND algorithms lose packets due to the collision of multiple packets, which greatly affects the speed of the ND algorithms. Traditional methods detect packet collision and implement retransmission when encountering packet loss. However, they does not solve the packet collision problem and the performance improvement of ND algorithms is limited. In this paper, the successive interference cancellation (SIC) technology is introduced into the ND algorithms to unpack multiple collision packets by distinguishing multiple packets in the power domain. Besides, the multi-packet reception (MPR) is further applied to reduce the probability of packet collision by distinguishing multiple received packets, thus further improving the speed of ND algorithms. Six ND algorithms, namely completely random algorithm (CRA), CRA based on SIC (CRA-SIC), CRA based on SIC and MPR (CRA-SIC-MPR), scan-based algorithm (SBA), SBA based on SIC (SBA-SIC), and SBA based on SIC and MPR (SBA-SIC-MPR), are theoretically analyzed and verified by simulation. The simulation results show that SIC and MPR reduce the ND time of SBA by 69.02% and CRA by 66.03% averagely.

The Monte Carlo simulation results show that, compared with other waveform optimization schemes, the proposed ISAC scheme has the best overall performance.
