Waveform Optimization for MIMO Joint Communication and Radio Sensing Systems with Training Overhead

In this paper, we study optimal waveform design to maximize mutual information (MI) for a joint communication and (radio) sensing (JCAS, a.k.a., radar-communication) multi-input multi-output (MIMO) downlink system. We consider a typical packet-based signal structure which includes training and data symbols. We first derive the conditional MI for both sensing and communication under correlated channels by considering the training overhead and channel estimation error (CEE). Then, we derive a lower bound for the channel estimation error and optimize the power allocation between the training and data symbols to minimize the CEE. Based on the optimal power allocation, we provide optimal waveform design methods for three scenarios, including maximizing MI for communication only and for sensing only, and maximizing a weighted sum MI for both communication and sensing. We also present extensive simulation results that provide insights on waveform design and validate the effectiveness of the proposed designs.

An Android Application Risk Evaluation Framework Based on Minimum Permission Set Identification

Android utilizes a security mechanism that requires apps to request permission for accessing sensitive user data, e.g., contacts and SMSs, or certain system features, e.g., camera and Internet access. However, Android apps tend to be overprivileged, i.e., they often request more permissions than necessary. This raises the security problem of overprivilege. To alleviate the overprivilege problem, this paper proposes MPDroid, an approach that combines static analysis and collaborative filtering to identify the minimum permissions for an Android app based on its app description and API usage. Given an app, MPDroid first employs collaborative filtering to identify the initial minimum permissions for the app. Then, through static analysis, the final minimum permissions that an app really needs are identified. Finally, it evaluates the overprivilege risk by inspecting the apps extra privileges, i.e., the unnecessary permissions requested by the app. Experiments are conducted on 16,343 popular apps collected from Google Play. The results show that MPDroid outperforms the state-of-the-art approach significantly.

Towards Universal Languages for Tractable Ontology Mediated Query Answering

An ontology language for ontology mediated query answering (OMQA-language) is universal for a family of OMQA-languages if it is the most expressive one among this family. In this paper, we focus on three families of tractable OMQA-languages, including first-order rewritable languages and languages whose data complexity of the query answering is in AC0 or PTIME. On the negative side, we prove that there is, in general, no universal language for each of these families of languages. On the positive side, we propose a novel property, the locality, to approximate the first-order rewritability, and show that there exists a language of disjunctive embedded dependencies that is universal for the family of OMQA-languages with locality. All of these results apply to OMQA with query languages such as conjunctive queries, unions of conjunctive queries and acyclic conjunctive queries.

Low-Complexity Linear Equalization for OTFS Systems with Rectangular Waveforms

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a promising technology for high-mobility wireless communications. However, the equalization realization in practical OTFS systems is a great challenge when the non-ideal rectangular waveforms are adopted. In this paper, first of all, we theoretically prove that the effective channel matrix under rectangular waveforms holds the block-circulant property and the special Fourier transform structure with time-domain channel. Then, by exploiting the proved property and structure, we further propose the corresponding low-complexity algorithms for two mainstream linear equalization methods, i.e., zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE). Compared with the existing direct-matrix-inversion-based equalization, the complexities can be reduced by a few thousand times for ZF and a few hundred times for MMSE without any performance loss, when the numbers of symbols and subcarriers are both 32 in OTFS systems.

MmWave Communication With Active Ambient Perception

In existing communication systems, the channel state information of each UE (user equipment) should be repeatedly estimated when it moves to a new position or another UE takes its place. The underlying ambient information, including the specific layout of potential reflectors, which provides more detailed information about all UEs' channel structures, has not been fully explored and exploited. In this paper, we rethink the mmWave channel estimation problem in a new and indirect way, i.e., instead of estimating the resultant composite channel response at each time and for any specific location, we first conduct the ambient perception exploiting the fascinating radar capability of a mmWave antenna array and then accomplish the location-based sparse channel reconstruction. In this way, the sparse channel for a quasi-static UE arriving at a specific location can be rapidly synthesized based on the perceived ambient information, thus greatly reducing the signalling overhead and online computational complexity. Based on the reconstructed mmWave channel, single-beam mmWave communication is designed and evaluated which shows excellent performance. Such an approach in fact integrates radar with communication, which may possibly open a new paradigm for future communication system design.

SCC-rFMQ Learning in Cooperative Markov Games with Continuous Actions

Although many reinforcement learning methods have been proposed for learning the optimal solutions in single-agent continuous-action domains, multiagent coordination domains with continuous actions have received relatively few investigations. In this paper, we propose an independent learner hierarchical method, named Sample Continuous Coordination with recursive Frequency Maximum Q-Value (SCC-rFMQ), which divides the cooperative problem with continuous actions into two layers. The first layer samples a finite set of actions from the continuous action spaces by a re-sampling mechanism with variable exploratory rates, and the second layer evaluates the actions in the sampled action set and updates the policy using a reinforcement learning cooperative method. By constructing cooperative mechanisms at both levels, SCC-rFMQ can handle cooperative problems in continuous action cooperative Markov games effectively. The effectiveness of SCC-rFMQ is experimentally demonstrated on two well-designed games, i.e., a continuous version of the climbing game and a cooperative version of the boat problem. Experimental results show that SCC-rFMQ outperforms other reinforcement learning algorithms.

gSMat: A Scalable Sparse Matrix-based Join for SPARQL Query Processing

Resource Description Framework (RDF) has been widely used to represent information on the web, while SPARQL is a standard query language to manipulate RDF data. Given a SPARQL query, there often exist many joins which are the bottlenecks of efficiency of query processing. Besides, the real RDF datasets often reveal strong data sparsity, which indicates that a resource often only relates to a few resources even the number of total resources is large. In this paper, we propose a sparse matrix-based (SM-based) SPARQL query processing approach over RDF datasets which con- siders both join optimization and data sparsity. Firstly, we present a SM-based storage for RDF datasets to lift the storage efficiency, where valid edges are stored only, and then introduce a predicate- based hash index on the storage. Secondly, we develop a scalable SM-based join algorithm for SPARQL query processing. Finally, we analyze the overall cost by accumulating all intermediate results and design a query plan generated algorithm. Besides, we extend our SM-based join algorithm on GPU for parallelizing SPARQL query processing. We have evaluated our approach compared with the state-of-the-art RDF engines over benchmark RDF datasets and the experimental results show that our proposal can significantly improve SPARQL query processing with high scalability.

TrQuery: An Embedding-based Framework for Recommanding SPARQL Queries

In this paper, we present an embedding-based framework (TrQuery) for recommending solutions of a SPARQL query, including approximate solutions when exact querying solutions are not available due to incompleteness or inconsistencies of real-world RDF data. Within this framework, embedding is applied to score solutions together with edit distance so that we could obtain more fine-grained recommendations than those recommendations via edit distance. For instance, graphs of two querying solutions with a similar structure can be distinguished in our proposed framework while the edit distance depending on structural difference becomes unable. To this end, we propose a novel score model built on vector space generated in embedding system to compute the similarity between an approximate subgraph matching and a whole graph matching. Finally, we evaluate our approach on large RDF datasets DBpedia and YAGO, and experimental results show that TrQuery exhibits an excellent behavior in terms of both effectiveness and efficiency.

MapSQ: A MapReduce-based Framework for SPARQL Queries on GPU

In this paper, we present a MapReduce-based framework for evaluating SPARQL queries on GPU (named MapSQ) to large-scale RDF datesets efficiently by applying both high performance. Firstly, we develop a MapReduce-based Join algorithm to handle SPARQL queries in a parallel way. Secondly, we present a coprocessing strategy to manage the process of evaluating queries where CPU is used to assigns subqueries and GPU is used to compute the join of subqueries. Finally, we implement our proposed framework and evaluate our proposal by comparing with two popular and latest SPARQL query engines gStore and gStoreD on the LUBM benchmark. The experiments demonstrate that our proposal MapSQ is highly efficient and effective (up to 50% speedup).

hMDAP: A Hybrid Framework for Multi-paradigm Data Analytical Processing on Spark

We propose hMDAP, a hybrid framework for large-scale data analytical processing on Spark, to support multi-paradigm process (incl. OLAP, machine learning, and graph analysis etc.) in distributed environments. The framework features a three-layer data process module and a business process module which controls the former. We will demonstrate the strength of hMDAP by using traffic scenarios in a real world.

PRSP: A Plugin-based Framework for RDF Stream Processing

In this paper, we propose a plugin-based framework for RDF stream processing named PRSP. Within this framework, we can employ SPARQL query engines to process C-SPARQL queries with maintaining the high performance of those engines in a simple way. Taking advantage of PRSP, we can process large-scale RDF streams in a distributed context via distributed SPARQL engines. Besides, we can evaluate the performance and correctness of existing SPARQL query engines in handling RDF streams in a united way, which amends the evaluation of them ranging from static RDF (i.e., RDF graph) to dynamic RDF (i.e., RDF stream). Finally, within PRSP, we experimently evaluate the correctness and the performance on YABench. The experiments show that PRSP can still maintain the high performance of those engines in RDF stream processing although there are some slight differences among them.

Path discovery by Querying the federation of Relational Database and RDF Graph

The class of queries for detecting path is an important as those can extract implicit binary relations over the nodes of input graphs. Most of the path querying languages used by the RDF community, like property paths in W3C SPARQL 1.1 and nested regular expressions in nSPARQL are based on the regular expressions. Federated queries allow for combining graph patterns and relational database that enables the evaluations over several heterogeneous data resources within a single query. Federated queries in W3C SPARQL 1.1 currently evaluated over different SPARQL endpoints. In this paper, we present a federated path querying language as an extension of regular path querying language for supporting RDF graph integration with relational database. The federated path querying language is absolutely more expressive than nested regular expressions and negation-free property paths. Its additional expressivity can be used for capturing the conjunction and federation of nested regular path queries. Despite the increase in expressivity, we also show that federated path queries are still enjoy a low computational complexity and can be evaluated efficiently.

Context-Free Path Queries on RDF Graphs

Navigational graph queries are an important class of queries that canextract implicit binary relations over the nodes of input graphs. Most of the navigational query languages used in the RDF community, e.g. property paths in W3C SPARQL 1.1 and nested regular expressions in nSPARQL, are based on the regular expressions. It is known that regular expressions have limited expressivity; for instance, some natural queries, like same generation-queries, are not expressible with regular expressions. To overcome this limitation, in this paper, we present cfSPARQL, an extension of SPARQL query language equipped with context-free grammars. The cfSPARQL language is strictly more expressive than property paths and nested expressions. The additional expressivity can be used for modelling graph similarities, graph summarization and ontology alignment. Despite the increasing expressivity, we show that cfSPARQL still enjoys a low computational complexity and can be evaluated efficiently.

PIWD: A Plugin-based Framework for Well-Designed SPARQL

In the real world datasets (e.g.,DBpedia query log), queries built on well-designed patterns containing only AND and OPT operators (for short, WDAO-patterns) account for a large proportion among all SPARQL queries. In this paper, we present a plugin-based framework for all SELECT queries built on WDAO-patterns, named PIWD. The framework is based on a parse tree called \emph{well-designed AND-OPT tree} (for short, WDAO-tree) whose leaves are basic graph patterns (BGP) and inner nodes are the OPT operators. We prove that for any WDAO-pattern, its parse tree can be equivalently transformed into a WDAO-tree. Based on the proposed framework, we can employ any query engine to evaluate BGP for evaluating queries built on WDAO-patterns in a convenient way. Theoretically, we can reduce the query evaluation of WDAO-patterns to subgraph homomorphism as well as BGP since the query evaluation of BGP is equivalent to subgraph homomorphism. Finally, our preliminary experiments on gStore and RDF-3X show that PIWD can answer all queries built on WDAO-patterns effectively and efficiently.

RORS: Enhanced Rule-based OWL Reasoning on Spark

The rule-based OWL reasoning is to compute the deductive closure of an ontology by applying RDF/RDFS and OWL entailment rules. The performance of the rule-based OWL reasoning is often sensitive to the rule execution order. In this paper, we present an approach to enhancing the performance of the rule-based OWL reasoning on Spark based on a locally optimal executable strategy. Firstly, we divide all rules (27 in total) into four main classes, namely, SPO rules (5 rules), type rules (7 rules), sameAs rules (7 rules), and schema rules (8 rules) since, as we investigated, those triples corresponding to the first three classes of rules are overwhelming (e.g., over 99% in the LUBM dataset) in our practical world. Secondly, based on the interdependence among those entailment rules in each class, we pick out an optimal rule executable order of each class and then combine them into a new rule execution order of all rules. Finally, we implement the new rule execution order on Spark in a prototype called RORS. The experimental results show that the running time of RORS is improved by about 30% as compared to Kim & Park's algorithm (2015) using the LUBM200 (27.6 million triples).

On the Statistical Analysis of Practical SPARQL Queries

In this paper, we analyze some basic features of SPARQL queries coming from our practical world in a statistical way. These features include three statistic features such as the occurrence frequency of triple patterns, fragments, well-designed patterns and four semantic features such as monotonicity, non-monotonicity, weak monotonicity (old solutions are still served as parts of new solutions when some new triples are added) and satisfiability. All these features contribute to characterize SPARQL queries in different dimensions. We hope that this statistical analysis would provide some useful observation for researchers and engineers who are interested in what practical SPARQL queries look like, so that they could develop some practical heuristics for processing SPARQL queries and build SPARQL query processing engines and benchmarks. Besides, they can narrow the scope of their problems by avoiding those cases that do possibly not happen in our practical world.

Efficient Approximation of Well-Designed SPARQL Queries

Query response time often influences user experience in the real world. However, it possibly takes more time to answer a query with its all exact solutions, especially when it contains the OPT operations since the OPT operation is the least conventional operator in SPARQL. So it becomes essential to make a trade-off between the query response time and the accuracy of their solutions. In this paper, based on the depth of the OPT operation occurring in a query, we propose an approach to obtain its all approximate queries with less depth of the OPT operation. This paper mainly discusses those queries with well-designed patterns since the OPT operation in a well-designed pattern is really "optional". Firstly, we transform a well-designed pattern in OPT normal form into a well-designed tree, whose inner nodes are labeled by OPT operation and leaf nodes are labeled by patterns containing other operations such as the AND operation and the FILTER operation. Secondly, based on this well-designed tree, we remove "optional" well-designed subtrees with less depth of the OPT operation and then obtain approximate queries with different depths of the OPT operation. Finally, we evaluate the approximate query efficiency with the degree of approximation.

B-spline Shape from Motion & Shading: An Automatic Free-form Surface Modeling for Face Reconstruction

Recently, many methods have been proposed for face reconstruction from multiple images, most of which involve fundamental principles of Shape from Shading and Structure from motion. However, a majority of the methods just generate discrete surface model of face. In this paper, B-spline Shape from Motion and Shading (BsSfMS) is proposed to reconstruct continuous B-spline surface for multi-view face images, according to an assumption that shading and motion information in the images contain 1st- and 0th-order derivative of B-spline face respectively. Face surface is expressed as a B-spline surface that can be reconstructed by optimizing B-spline control points. Therefore, normals and 3D feature points computed from shading and motion of images respectively are used as the 1st- and 0th- order derivative information, to be jointly applied in optimizing the B-spline face. Additionally, an IMLS (iterative multi-least-square) algorithm is proposed to handle the difficult control point optimization. Furthermore, synthetic samples and LFW dataset are introduced and conducted to verify the proposed approach, and the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness with different poses, illuminations, expressions etc., even with wild images.
