High-responsivity vertical-illumination Si/Ge uni-traveling-carrier photodiodes based on silicon-on-insulator substrate

Si/Ge uni-traveling carrier photodiodes exhibit higher output current when space-charge effects are overcome and thermal effects are suppressed, which is highly beneficial for increasing the dynamic range of various microwave photonic systems and simplifying high-bit-rate digital receivers in different applications. From the point of view of packaging, detectors with vertical-illumination configuration can be easily handled by pick-and-place tools and are a popular choice for making photo-receiver modules. However, vertical-illumination Si/Ge uni-traveling carrier (UTC) devices suffer from inter-constraint between high speed and high responsivity. Here, we report a high responsivity vertical-illumination Si/Ge UTC photodiode based on a silicon-on-insulator substrate. The maximum absorption efficiency of the devices was 2.4 times greater than the silicon substrate owing to constructive interference. The Si/Ge UTC photodiode was successfully fabricated and had a dominant responsivity at 1550 nm of 0.18 A/W, a 50% improvement even with a 25% thinner Ge absorption layer.

Lorentz and CPT Violation in Top-Quark Production

Signals for Lorentz and CPT violation can appear in a wide range of experiments including hadron colliders like the LHC. We present a calculation of the Lorentz-violating cross section for top-quark pair production via gluon fusion. This process dominates at the LHC, and analysis of LHC data should permit sharpening the constraints on top-quark Lorentz violation obtained recently by the D0 Collaboration. We also present a separate calculation of single-top production, which is sensitive to CPT violation. Data from the LHC can be used to measure coefficients for CPT violation in the top-quark sector for the first time.

Lorentz and CPT Violation in Top-Quark Production and Decay

The prospects are explored for testing Lorentz and CPT symmetry in the top-quark sector. We present the relevant Lagrange density, discuss physical observables, and describe the signals to be sought in experiments. For top-antitop pair production via quark or gluon fusion with subsequent semileptonic or hadronic decays, we obtain the matrix element in the presence of Lorentz violation using the narrow-width approximation. The issue of testing CPT symmetry in the top-quark sector is also addressed. We demonstrate that single-top production and decay is well suited to a search for CPT violation, and we present the matrix elements for single-top production in each of the four tree-level channels. Our results are applicable to searches for Lorentz violation and studies of CPT symmetry in collider experiments, including notably high-statistics top-antitop and single-top production at the Large Hadron Collider.

The SYSU System for the Interspeech 2015 Automatic Speaker Verification Spoofing and Countermeasures Challenge

Many existing speaker verification systems are reported to be vulnerable against different spoofing attacks, for example speaker-adapted speech synthesis, voice conversion, play back, etc. In order to detect these spoofed speech signals as a countermeasure, we propose a score level fusion approach with several different i-vector subsystems. We show that the acoustic level Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) features, the phase level modified group delay cepstral coefficients (MGDCC) and the phonetic level phoneme posterior probability (PPP) tandem features are effective for the countermeasure. Furthermore, feature level fusion of these features before i-vector modeling also enhance the performance. A polynomial kernel support vector machine is adopted as the supervised classifier. In order to enhance the generalizability of the countermeasure, we also adopted the cosine similarity and PLDA scoring as one-class classifications methods. By combining the proposed i-vector subsystems with the OpenSMILE baseline which covers the acoustic and prosodic information further improves the final performance. The proposed fusion system achieves 0.29% and 3.26% EER on the development and test set of the database provided by the INTERSPEECH 2015 automatic speaker verification spoofing and countermeasures challenge.

Testing for pure-jump processes for high-frequency data

Pure-jump processes have been increasingly popular in modeling high-frequency financial data, partially due to their versatility and flexibility. In the meantime, several statistical tests have been proposed in the literature to check the validity of using pure-jump models. However, these tests suffer from several drawbacks, such as requiring rather stringent conditions and having slow rates of convergence. In this paper, we propose a different test to check whether the underlying process of high-frequency data can be modeled by a pure-jump process. The new test is based on the realized characteristic function, and enjoys a much faster convergence rate of order $O(n^{1/2})$ (where $n$ is the sample size) versus the usual $o(n^{1/4})$ available for existing tests; it is applicable much more generally than previous tests; for example, it is robust to jumps of infinite variation and flexible modeling of the diffusion component. Simulation studies justify our findings and the test is also applied to some real high-frequency financial data.

Community Detection from Location-Tagged Networks

Many real world systems or web services can be represented as a network such as social networks and transportation networks. In the past decade, many algorithms have been developed to detect the communities in a network using connections between nodes. However in many real world networks, the locations of nodes have great influence on the community structure. For example, in a social network, more connections are established between geographically proximate users. The impact of locations on community has not been fully investigated by the research literature. In this paper, we propose a community detection method which takes locations of nodes into consideration. The goal is to detect communities with both geographic proximity and network closeness. We analyze the distribution of the distances between connected and unconnected nodes to measure the influence of location on the network structure on two real location-tagged social networks. We propose a method to determine if a location-based community detection method is suitable for a given network. We propose a new community detection algorithm that pushes the location information into the community detection. We test our proposed method on both synthetic data and real world network datasets. The results show that the communities detected by our method distribute in a smaller area compared with the traditional methods and have the similar or higher tightness on network connections.

Electronic structure and excitations in oxygen deficient CeO$_{2-δ}$ from DFT calculations

The electronic structures of supercells of CeO$_{2-δ}$ have been calculated within the Density Functional Theory (DFT). The equilibrium properties such as lattice constants, bulk moduli and magnetic moments are well reproduced by the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). Electronic excitations are simulated by robust total energy calculations for constrained states with atomic core- or valence-holes. Pristine ceria CeO$_2$ is found to be a non-magnetic insulator with magnetism setting in as soon as oxygens are removed from the structure. In the ground state of defective ceria, the Ce-$f$ majority band resides near the Fermi level, but appears at about 2 eV below the Fermi level in photoemission spectroscopy experiments due to final state effects. We also tested our computational method by calculating threshold energies in Ce-M$_5$ and O-K x-ray absorption spectroscopy and comparing theoretical predictions with the corresponding measurements. Our result that $f$ electrons reside near the Fermi level in the ground state of oxygen deficient ceria is crucial for understanding catalytic properties of CeO$_2$ and related materials.

Modeling high-frequency financial data by pure jump processes

It is generally accepted that the asset price processes contain jumps. In fact, pure jump models have been widely used to model asset prices and/or stochastic volatilities. The question is: is there any statistical evidence from the high-frequency financial data to support using pure jump models alone? The purpose of this paper is to develop such a statistical test against the necessity of a diffusion component. The test is very simple to use and yet effective. Asymptotic properties of the proposed test statistic will be studied. Simulation studies and some real-life examples are included to illustrate our results.

Observation of new intrinsic properties of VO2

The single crystal VO2, exihibiting a first-order metal-insulator transition (MIT) at 67.2 degrees C and an insulator-insulator transition (IIT) at ~49.7 degrees C, is grown. From synchrotron-based x-ray microdiffraction analysis, the IIT shows structural phase transition (SPT) of monoclinic M2 to M1 phases while the MIT displays M1 to rutile R phases. The IIT exhibits percolative SPT while the MIT shows abrupt transition width of < 0.02 degrees C, supporting Mott's prediction. The MIT occurs non-percolatively with a sharp boundary between R and M1 phases. The MIT onset temperature shows significant variation.

An electron hole doping and soft x-ray spectroscopy study on La1-xSrxFe0.75Ni0.25O3-δ

The conductivity of the electron hole and polaron conductor La1-xSrxFe0.75Ni0.25O3-δ, a potential cathode material for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells, was studied for 0 <x < 1 and for temperatures 300 K <T < 1250 K. In LaSrFe-oxide, an ABO3 type perovskite, A-site substitu-tion of the trivalent La3+ by the divalent Sr2+ causes oxidation of Fe3+ towards Fe4+, which forms conducting electron holes. Here we have in addition a B-site substitution by Ni. The compound for x = 0.5 is identified as the one with the highest conductivity (σ ~ 678 S/cm) and lowest activation energy for polaron conductivity (Ep = 39 meV). The evolution of the electronic structure was monitored by soft x-ray Fe and oxygen K-edge spectroscopy. Homogeneous trend for the oxida-tion state of the Fe was observed. The variation of the ambient temperature conductivity and activation energy with relative Sr content (x) shows a correlation with the ratio of (eg/eg+t2g) in Fe L3 edge up to x=0.5. The hole doping process is reflected by an almost linear trend by the variation of the pre-peaks of the oxygen K-edge soft x-ray absorption spectra.

Fe-resonant valence band photoemission and oxygen NEXAFS study on La1-xSrxFe0.75Ni0.25O3-δ

Iron resonant valance band photoemission spectra of Sr substituted LaFe0.75Ni0.25 O3-δ have been recorded across the Fe 2p - 3d absorption threshold to obtain Fe specific spectral information on the 3d projected partial density of states. Comparison with La1-xSrxFeO3 resonant VB PES literature data suggests that substitution of Fe by Ni forms electron holes which are mainly O 2p character. Substitution of La by Sr increases the hole concentration to an extent that the eg structure vanishes. The variation of the eg and t2g structures is paralleled by the changes in the electrical conductivity.

Entanglement of charge transfer, hole doping, exchange interaction and octahedron tilting angle and their influence on the conductivity of La1-xSrxFe0.75Ni0.25O3-δ: A combination of x-ray spectroscopy and diffraction

Substitution of La by Sr in the 25% Ni doped charge transfer insulator LaFeO3 creates structural changes that inflect the electrical conductivity caused by small polaron hopping via exchange interactions and charge transfer. The substitution forms electron holes and a structural crossover from orthorhombic to rhombohedral symmetry, and then to cubic symmetry. The structural crossover is accompanied by a crossover from Fe3+-O2--Fe3+ superexchange interaction to Fe3+-O2--Fe4+ double exchange interaction, as evidenced by a considerable increase of conductivity. These interactions and charge transfer mechanism depend on superexchange angle, which approaches 180° upon increasing Sr concentration, leading an increased overlap between the O (2p) and Fe/Ni (3d) orbitals.

Magnetic ordering in mackinawite (tetragonal FeS): evidence for strong itinerant spin fluctuations

Mackinawite is a naturally-occurring layer type FeS mineral well-known to be important in biogeochemical cycles and, more recently, to the development of microbial fuel cells. Conflicting results have been published as to the magnetic properties of this mineral, with Mössbauer spectroscopy indicating no magnetic ordering and density functional theory predicting an antiferromagnetic ground state, similar to the Fe-based high-temperature superconductors with which it is isostructural and for which it is known that magnetism is suppressed by strong itinerant spin fluctuations. We investigated this latter possibility for mackinawite using photoemission spectroscopy (PES), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAS), and density functional theory (DFT) computations. Our Fe 3s core-level PES spectrum of mackinawite showed a clear exchange-energy splitting (2.9 eV) consistent with a 1 μB magnetic moment on the Fe ions, while the Fe L-edge XAS spectrum indicated rather delocalized Fe 3d electrons in mackinawite similar to those in Fe metal. DFT computations demonstrated that the ground state of mackinawite is single-stripe antiferromagnetic, with an Fe magnetic moment (2.7 μB) that is significantly larger than the experimental estimate and has a strong dependence on the S height and lattice parameters. All of these trends signal the existence of strong itinerant spin fluctuations. If strong spin fluctuations prove to be the mediators of electron pairing in these Fe-based superconductors, we conjecture that mackinawite may be one of the simplest Fe-based superconductors.

Measuring individual overpotentials in an operating solid-oxide electrochemical cell

We use photo-electrons as a non-contact probe to measure local electrical potentials in a solid-oxide electrochemical cell. We characterize the cell in operando at near-ambient pressure using spatially-resolved X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The overpotentials at the interfaces between the Ni and Pt electrodes and the yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte are directly measured. The method is validated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Using the overpotentials, which characterize the cell's inefficiencies, we compare without ambiguity the electro-catalytic efficiencies of Ni and Pt, finding that on Ni H_2O splitting proceeds more rapidly than H2 oxidation, while on Pt, H2 oxidation proceeds more rapidly than H2O splitting.
