Anomalous relation between in-plane and out-of-plane stiffnesses in 2D networked materials

For thin networked materials, which are spatial discrete structures constructed by continuum components, a paradox on the effective thickness defined by the in-plane and out-of-plane stiffnesses is found, i.e. the effective thickness is not a constant but varies with loading modes. To reveal the mechanism underneath the paradox, we have established a micromechanical framework to investigate the deformation mechanism and predict the stiffness matrix of the networked materials. It is revealed that the networked materials can carry in-plane loads by axial stretching/compression of the components in the networks and resist out-of-plane loading by bending and torsion of the components. The bending deformation of components has a corresponding relation to the axial stretching/compression through the effective thickness, as the continuum plates do, while the torsion deformation has no relation to the axial stretching/compression. The isolated torsion deformation breaks the classical stiffness relation between the in-plane stiffness and the out-of-plane stiffness, which can even be further distorted by the stiffness threshold effect in randomly networked materials. Accordingly, a new formula is summarized to describe the anomalous stiffness relation. This network model can also apply in atomic scale 2D nanomaterials when combining with the molecular structural mechanics model. This work gives an insight into the understanding of the mechanical properties of discrete materials/structures ranging from atomic scale to macro scale.

Optimal Multi-Quality Multicast for 360 Virtual Reality Video

A 360 virtual reality (VR) video, recording a scene of interest in every direction, provides VR users with immersive viewing experience. However, transmission of a 360 VR video which is of a much larger size than a traditional video to mobile users brings a heavy burden to a wireless network. In this paper, we consider multi-quality multicast of a 360 VR video from a single server to multiple users using time division multiple access (TDMA). To improve transmission efficiency, tiling is adopted, and each tile is pre-encoded into multiple representations with different qualities. We optimize the quality level selection, transmission time allocation and transmission power allocation to maximize the total utility of all users under the transmission time and power allocation constraints as well as the quality smoothness constraints for mixed-quality tiles. The problem is a challenging mixed discrete-continuous opti-mization problem. We propose two low-complexity algorithms to obtain two suboptimal solutions, using continuous relaxation and DC programming, respectively. Finally, numerical results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed solutions.

Optimal Multicast of Tiled 360 VR Video in OFDMA Systems

In this letter, we study optimal multicast of tiled 360 virtual reality (VR) video from one server (base station or access point) to multiple users in an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system. For given video quality, we optimize the subcarrier, transmission power and transmission rate allocation to minimize the total transmission power. For given transmission power budget, we optimize the subcarrier, transmission power and transmission rate allocation to maximize the received video quality. These two optimization problems are non-convex problems. We obtain a globally optimal closed-form solution and a near optimal solution of the two problems, separately, both revealing important design insights for multicast of tiled 360 VR video in OFDMA systems.

Optimal Multicast of Tiled 360 VR Video

In this letter, we study optimal multicast of tiled 360 virtual reality (VR) video from one server (base station or access point) to multiple users. We consider random viewing directions and random channel conditions, and adopt time division multiple access (TDMA). For given video quality, we optimize the transmission time and power allocation to minimize the average transmission energy. For given transmission energy budget, we optimize the transmission time and power allocation as well as the encoding rate of each tile to maximize the received video quality. These two optimization problems are challenging non-convex problems. We obtain globally optimal closed-form solutions of the two non-convex problems, which reveal important design insights for multicast of tiled 360 VR video. Finally, numerical results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed solutions.

Energy-Efficient Multi-View Video Transmission with View Synthesis-Enabled Multicast

Multi-view videos (MVVs) provide immersive viewing experience, at the cost of heavy load to wireless networks. Except for further improving viewing experience, view synthesis can create multicast opportunities for efficient transmission of MVVs in multiuser wireless networks, which has not been recognized in existing literature. In this paper, we would like to exploit view synthesis-enabled multicast opportunities for energy-efficient MVV transmission in a multiuser wireless network. Specifically, we first establish a mathematical model to characterize the impact of view synthesis on multicast opportunities and energy consumption. Then, we consider the optimization of view selection, transmission time and power allocation to minimize the weighted sum energy consumption for view transmission and synthesis, which is a challenging mixed discrete-continuous optimization problem. We propose an algorithm to obtain an optimal solution with reduced computational complexity by exploiting optimality properties. To further reduce computational complexity, we also propose two low-complexity algorithms to obtain two suboptimal solutions, based on continuous relaxation and Difference of Convex (DC) programming, respectively. Finally, numerical results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed solutions.

Origin of interfacial conductivity at complex oxide heterointerfaces: possibility of electron transfer from water chemistry at surface oxygen vacancies

Variety of conducting heterointerfaces have been made between SrTiO3 substrates and thin capping layers of distinctly different oxide materials that can be classified into polar band insulators (e.g. LaAlO3), polar Mott insulators (e.g. LaTiO3), apparently non-polar band insulators (e.g. γ-Al2O3), and amorphous oxides (e.g. amorphous SrTiO3). A fundamental question to ask is if there is a common mechanism that governs interfacial conductivity in all these heterointerfaces. Here, we examined the conductivity of different kinds of heterointerfaces by annealing in oxygen and surface treatment with water. It was found that the conductivity of all the heterointerfaces show a strong dependence on annealing, and can be universally tuned by surface treatment whose effect is determined by the annealing condition. These observations, together with ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, suggest that water chemistry at surface oxygen vacancies is a common mechanism that supplies electrons to the interface.

High-dimensional covariance matrices in elliptical distributions with application to spherical test

This paper discusses fluctuations of linear spectral statistics of high-dimensional sample covariance matrices when the underlying population follows an elliptical distribution. Such population often possesses high order correlations among their coordinates, which have great impact on the asymptotic behaviors of linear spectral statistics. Taking such kind of dependency into consideration, we establish a new central limit theorem for the linear spectral statistics in this paper for a class of elliptical populations. This general theoretical result has wide applications and, as an example, it is then applied to test the sphericity of elliptical populations.

Learning Semantic Segmentation with Diverse Supervision

Models based on deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) have significantly improved the performance of semantic segmentation. However, learning these models requires a large amount of training images with pixel-level labels, which are very costly and time-consuming to collect. In this paper, we propose a method for learning CNN-based semantic segmentation models from images with several types of annotations that are available for various computer vision tasks, including image-level labels for classification, box-level labels for object detection and pixel-level labels for semantic segmentation. The proposed method is flexible and can be used together with any existing CNN-based semantic segmentation networks. Experimental evaluation on the challenging PASCAL VOC 2012 and SIFT-flow benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively make use of diverse training data to improve the performance of the learned models.

A Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Approach for Cost- and Energy-Aware Multi-Flow Mobile Data Offloading

With the rapid increase in demand for mobile data, mobile network operators are trying to expand wireless network capacity by deploying wireless local area network (LAN) hotspots on to which they can offload their mobile traffic. However, these network-centric methods usually do not fulfill the interests of mobile users (MUs). Taking into consideration many issues such as different applications' deadlines, monetary cost and energy consumption, how the MU decides whether to offload their traffic to a complementary wireless LAN is an important issue. Previous studies assume the MU's mobility pattern is known in advance, which is not always true. In this paper, we study the MU's policy to minimize his monetary cost and energy consumption without known MU mobility pattern. We propose to use a kind of reinforcement learning technique called deep Q-network (DQN) for MU to learn the optimal offloading policy from past experiences. In the proposed DQN based offloading algorithm, MU's mobility pattern is no longer needed. Furthermore, MU's state of remaining data is directly fed into the convolution neural network in DQN without discretization. Therefore, not only does the discretization error present in previous work disappear, but also it makes the proposed algorithm has the ability to generalize the past experiences, which is especially effective when the number of states is large. Extensive simulations are conducted to validate our proposed offloading algorithms.

Cost- and Energy-Aware Multi-Flow Mobile Data Offloading Using Markov Decision Process

With the rapid increase in demand for mobile data, mobile network operators are trying to expand wireless network capacity by deploying wireless local area network (LAN) hotspots on which they can offload their mobile traffic. However, these network-centric methods usually do not fulfill the interests of mobile users (MUs). Taking into consideration many issues, MUs should be able to decide whether to offload their traffic to a complementary wireless LAN. Our previous work studied single-flow wireless LAN offloading from a MU's perspective by considering delay-tolerance of traffic, monetary cost and energy consumption. In this paper, we study the multi-flow mobile data offloading problem from a MU's perspective in which a MU has multiple applications to download data simultaneously from remote servers, and different applications' data have different deadlines. We formulate the wireless LAN offloading problem as a finite-horizon discrete-time Markov decision process (MDP) and establish an optimal policy by a dynamic programming based algorithm. Since the time complexity of the dynamic programming based offloading algorithm is still high, we propose a low time complexity heuristic offloading algorithm with performance sacrifice. Extensive simulations are conducted to validate our proposed offloading algorithms.

Asymptotic properties of the realized skewness and related statistics

The recent empirical work of Amaya et al. (2015) has pointed out that the realized skewness, which is the sample skewness of intraday high-frequency returns of a financial asset, serves as forecasting future returns in the cross-section. Theoretically, the realized skewness is interpreted as the sample skewness of returns of a discretely observed semimartingale in a fixed interval. The aim of this paper is to investigate the asymptotic property of the realized skewness in such a framework. We also develop an estimation theory for the limiting characteristic of the realized skewness in a situation where measurement errors are present and sampling times are stochastic.

Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation for Cache-Assisted Mobile Edge Computing

In this paper, we jointly consider communication, caching and computation in a multi-user cache-assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) system, consisting of one base station (BS) of caching and computing capabilities and multiple users with computation-intensive and latency-sensitive applications. We propose a joint caching and offloading mechanism which involves task uploading and executing for tasks with uncached computation results as well as computation result downloading for all tasks at the BS, and efficiently utilizes multi-user diversity and multicasting opportunities. Then, we formulate the average total energy minimization problem subject to the caching and deadline constraints to optimally allocate the storage resource at the BS for caching computation results as well as the uploading and downloading time durations. The problem is a challenging mixed discrete-continuous optimization problem. We show that strong duality holds, and obtain an optimal solution using a dual method. To reduce the computational complexity, we further propose a low-complexity suboptimal solution. Finally, numerical results show that the proposed suboptimal solution outperforms existing comparison schemes.

Face Parsing via a Fully-Convolutional Continuous CRF Neural Network

In this work, we address the face parsing task with a Fully-Convolutional continuous CRF Neural Network (FC-CNN) architecture. In contrast to previous face parsing methods that apply region-based subnetwork hundreds of times, our FC-CNN is fully convolutional with high segmentation accuracy. To achieve this goal, FC-CNN integrates three subnetworks, a unary network, a pairwise network and a continuous Conditional Random Field (C-CRF) network into a unified framework. The high-level semantic information and low-level details across different convolutional layers are captured by the convolutional and deconvolutional structures in the unary network. The semantic edge context is learnt by the pairwise network branch to construct pixel-wise affinity. Based on a differentiable superpixel pooling layer and a differentiable C-CRF layer, the unary network and pairwise network are combined via a novel continuous CRF network to achieve spatial consistency in both training and test procedure of a deep neural network. Comprehensive evaluations on LFW-PL and HELEN datasets demonstrate that FC-CNN achieves better performance over the other state-of-arts for accurate face labeling on challenging images.

Multi-Quality Multicast Beamforming based on Scalable Video Coding

In this paper, we consider multi-quality multicast beamforming of a video stream from a multi-antenna base station (BS) to multiple single-antenna users receiving different qualities of the same video stream, via scalable video coding (SVC). Leveraging the layered structure of SVC and exploiting superposition coding (SC) as well as successive interference cancelation (SIC), we propose a layer-based multi-quality multicast beamforming scheme. To reduce the complexity, we also propose a quality-based multi-quality multicast beamforming scheme, which further utilizes the layered structure of SVC and quality information of all users. Under each scheme, for given quality requirements of all users, we formulate the corresponding optimal beamforming design as a non-convex power minimization problem, and obtain a globally optimal solution for a class of special cases as well as a locally optimal solution for the general case. Then, we show that the minimum total transmission power of the quality-based power minimization problem is the same as that of the layer-based power minimization problem, although the former incurs a lower computational complexity. Next, we consider the optimal joint layer selection and quality-based multi quality multicast beamforming design to maximize the total utility representing the satisfaction with the received video quality for all users under a given maximum transmission power budget, which is NP-hard in general. By exploiting the optimal solution of the quality-based power minimization problem, we develop a greedy algorithm to obtain a near optimal solution. Finally, numerical results show that the proposed solutions achieve better performance than existing solutions.

Multi-Stream Switching for Interactive Virtual Reality Video Streaming

Virtual reality (VR) video provides an immersive 360 viewing experience to a user wearing a head-mounted display: as the user rotates his head, correspondingly different fields-of-view (FoV) of the 360 video are rendered for observation. Transmitting the entire 360 video in high quality over bandwidth-constrained networks from server to client for real-time playback is challenging. In this paper we propose a multi-stream switching framework for VR video streaming: the server pre-encodes a set of VR video streams covering different view ranges that account for server-client round trip time (RTT) delay, and during streaming the server transmits and switches streams according to a user's detected head rotation angle. For a given RTT, we formulate an optimization to seek multiple VR streams of different view ranges and the head-angle-to-stream mapping function simultaneously, in order to minimize the expected distortion subject to bandwidth and storage constraints. We propose an alternating algorithm that, at each iteration, computes the optimal streams while keeping the mapping function fixed and vice versa. Experiments show that for the same bandwidth, our multi-stream switching scheme outperforms a non-switching single-stream approach by up to 2.9dB in PSNR.

Realization of Quantum Spin Hall State in Monolayer 1T'-WTe2

A quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator is a novel two-dimensional quantum state of matter that features quantized Hall conductance in the absence of magnetic field, resulting from topologically protected dissipationless edge states that bridge the energy gap opened by band inversion and strong spin-orbit coupling. By investigating electronic structure of epitaxially grown monolayer 1T'-WTe2 using angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) and first principle calculations, we observe clear signatures of the topological band inversion and the band gap opening, which are the hallmarks of a QSH state. Scanning tunneling microscopy measurements further confirm the correct crystal structure and the existence of a bulk band gap, and provide evidence for a modified electronic structure near the edge that is consistent with the expectations for a QSH insulator. Our results establish monolayer 1T'-WTe2 as a new class of QSH insulator with large band gap in a robust two-dimensional materials family of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs).

Computational Model for Predicting Visual Fixations from Childhood to Adulthood

How people look at visual information reveals fundamental information about themselves, their interests and their state of mind. While previous visual attention models output static 2-dimensional saliency maps, saccadic models aim to predict not only where observers look at but also how they move their eyes to explore the scene. Here we demonstrate that saccadic models are a flexible framework that can be tailored to emulate observer's viewing tendencies. More specifically, we use the eye data from 101 observers split in 5 age groups (adults, 8-10 y.o., 6-8 y.o., 4-6 y.o. and 2 y.o.) to train our saccadic model for different stages of the development of the human visual system. We show that the joint distribution of saccade amplitude and orientation is a visual signature specific to each age group, and can be used to generate age-dependent scanpaths. Our age-dependent saccadic model not only outputs human-like, age-specific visual scanpath, but also significantly outperforms other state-of-the-art saliency models. In this paper, we demonstrate that the computational modelling of visual attention, through the use of saccadic model, can be efficiently adapted to emulate the gaze behavior of a specific group of observers.

Recursive SDN for Carrier Networks

Control planes for global carrier networks should be programmable (so that new functionality can be easily introduced) and scalable (so they can handle the numerical scale and geographic scope of these networks). Neither traditional control planes nor new SDN-based control planes meet both of these goals. In this paper, we propose a framework for recursive routing computations that combines the best of SDN (programmability) and traditional networks (scalability through hierarchy) to achieve these two desired properties. Through simulation on graphs of up to 10,000 nodes, we evaluate our design's ability to support a variety of routing and traffic engineering solutions, while incorporating a fast failure recovery mechanism.
