Every finite graph arises as the singular set of a compact $3$-d calibrated area minimizing surface

Given any (not necessarily connected) combinatorial finite graph and any compact smooth $6$-manifold $M^6$ with the third Betti number $b_3\not=0$, we construct a calibrated 3-dimensional homologically area minimizing surface on $M$ equipped in a smooth metric $g$, so that the singular set of the surface is precisely an embedding of this finite graph. Moreover, the calibration form near the singular set is a smoothly $GL(6,\mathbb{R})$ twisted special Lagrangian form. The constructions are based on some unpublished ideas of Professor Camillo De Lellis and Professor Robert Bryant.

Area-minimizing surfaces with fractal singular sets: prevalence, moduli space, and refinements on strata

This paper is a continuation of our work on a conjecture of Almgren on area-minimizing surfaces with fractal singular sets. First, we prove that area-minimizing surfaces with fractal singular sets are prevalent on the homology level on general manifolds. They exist even in metrics arbitrarily close to the flat metric on a torus. Second, we partially determine the moduli space of area-minimizing currents near the ones with fractal singular set that we constructed in this and previous work. Around strata of codimension at least three, the fractal self-intersections deform into transverse immersions under generic perturbations of metric. The result is sharp and we construct concrete examples to show that our fractal singularities do not necessarily completely dissolve under generic perturbations. Finally, we improve our previous results to give examples with different strata limiting to each other and refine the first stratum to fractal subsets of finite combinatorial graphs.

Diffusion-Based 3D Human Pose Estimation with Multi-Hypothesis Aggregation

In this paper, a novel Diffusion-based 3D Pose estimation (D3DP) method with Joint-wise reProjection-based Multi-hypothesis Aggregation (JPMA) is proposed for probabilistic 3D human pose estimation. On the one hand, D3DP generates multiple possible 3D pose hypotheses for a single 2D observation. It gradually diffuses the ground truth 3D poses to a random distribution, and learns a denoiser conditioned on 2D keypoints to recover the uncontaminated 3D poses. The proposed D3DP is compatible with existing 3D pose estimators and supports users to balance efficiency and accuracy during inference through two customizable parameters. On the other hand, JPMA is proposed to assemble multiple hypotheses generated by D3DP into a single 3D pose for practical use. It reprojects 3D pose hypotheses to the 2D camera plane, selects the best hypothesis joint-by-joint based on the reprojection errors, and combines the selected joints into the final pose. The proposed JPMA conducts aggregation at the joint level and makes use of the 2D prior information, both of which have been overlooked by previous approaches. Extensive experiments on Human3.6M and MPI-INF-3DHP datasets show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art deterministic and probabilistic approaches by 1.5% and 8.9%, respectively. A Survey on Visual Transformer

Transformer, first applied to the field of natural language processing, is a type of deep neural network mainly based on the self-attention mechanism. Thanks to its strong representation capabilities, researchers are looking at ways to apply transformer to computer vision tasks. In a variety of visual benchmarks, transformer-based models perform similar to or better than other types of networks such as convolutional and recurrent neural networks. Given its high performance and less need for vision-specific inductive bias, transformer is receiving more and more attention from the computer vision community. In this paper, we review these vision transformer models by categorizing them in different tasks and analyzing their advantages and disadvantages. The main categories we explore include the backbone network, high/mid-level vision, low-level vision, and video processing. We also include efficient transformer methods for pushing transformer into real device-based applications. Furthermore, we also take a brief look at the self-attention mechanism in computer vision, as it is the base component in transformer. Toward the end of this paper, we discuss the challenges and provide several further research directions for vision transformers.

Entanglement Routing over Quantum Networks Using Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger Measurements

Generating a long-distance quantum entanglement is one of the most essential functions of a quantum network to support quantum communication and computing applications. The successful entanglement rate during a probabilistic entanglement process decreases dramatically with distance, and swapping is a widely-applied quantum technique to address this issue. Most existing entanglement routing protocols use a classic entanglement-swapping method based on Bell State measurements that can only fuse two successful entanglement links. This paper appeals to a more general and efficient swapping method, namely n-fusion based on Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger measurements that can fuse n successful entanglement links, to maximize the entanglement rate for multiple quantum-user pairs over a quantum network. We propose efficient entanglement routing algorithms that utilize the properties of n-fusion for quantum networks with general topologies. Evaluation results highlight that our proposed algorithm under n-fusion can greatly improve the network performance compared with existing ones.

GhostSR: Learning Ghost Features for Efficient Image Super-Resolution

Modern single image super-resolution (SISR) system based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) achieves fancy performance while requires huge computational costs. The problem on feature redundancy is well studied in visual recognition task, but rarely discussed in SISR. Based on the observation that many features in SISR models are also similar to each other, we propose to use shift operation to generate the redundant features (i.e., ghost features). Compared with depth-wise convolution which is time-consuming on GPU-like devices, shift operation can bring a practical inference acceleration for CNNs on common hardwares. We analyze the benefits of shift operation on SISR task and make the shift orientation learnable based on Gumbel-Softmax trick. Besides, a clustering procedure is explored based on pre-trained models to identify the intrinsic filters for generating intrinsic features. The ghost features will be derived by moving these intrinsic features along a specific orientation. Finally, the complete output features are constructed by concatenating the intrinsic and ghost features together. Extensive experiments on several benchmark models and datasets demonstrate that both the non-compact and lightweight SISR models embedded with the proposed method can achieve a comparable performance to that of their baselines with a large reduction of parameters, FLOPs and GPU inference latency. For instance, we reduce the parameters by 46%, FLOPs by 46% and GPU inference latency by 42% of $\times2$ EDSR network with basically lossless performance.

P-STMO: Pre-Trained Spatial Temporal Many-to-One Model for 3D Human Pose Estimation

This paper introduces a novel Pre-trained Spatial Temporal Many-to-One (P-STMO) model for 2D-to-3D human pose estimation task. To reduce the difficulty of capturing spatial and temporal information, we divide this task into two stages: pre-training (Stage I) and fine-tuning (Stage II). In Stage I, a self-supervised pre-training sub-task, termed masked pose modeling, is proposed. The human joints in the input sequence are randomly masked in both spatial and temporal domains. A general form of denoising auto-encoder is exploited to recover the original 2D poses and the encoder is capable of capturing spatial and temporal dependencies in this way. In Stage II, the pre-trained encoder is loaded to STMO model and fine-tuned. The encoder is followed by a many-to-one frame aggregator to predict the 3D pose in the current frame. Especially, an MLP block is utilized as the spatial feature extractor in STMO, which yields better performance than other methods. In addition, a temporal downsampling strategy is proposed to diminish data redundancy. Extensive experiments on two benchmarks show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods with fewer parameters and less computational overhead. For example, our P-STMO model achieves 42.1mm MPJPE on Human3.6M dataset when using 2D poses from CPN as inputs. Meanwhile, it brings a 1.5-7.1 times speedup to state-of-the-art methods. Code is available at https://github.com/paTRICK-swk/P-STMO.

Multi-Entanglement Routing Design over Quantum Networks

Quantum networks are considered as a promising future platform for quantum information exchange and quantum applications, which have capabilities far beyond the traditional communication networks. Remote quantum entanglement is an essential component of a quantum network. How to efficiently design a multi-routing entanglement protocol is a fundamental yet challenging problem. In this paper, we study a quantum entanglement routing problem to simultaneously maximize the number of quantum-user pairs and their expected throughput. Our approach is to formulate the problem as two sequential integer programming steps. We propose efficient entanglement routing algorithms for the two integer programming steps and analyze their time complexity and performance bounds. Results of evaluation highlight that our approach outperforms existing solutions in both served quantum-user pairs numbers and the network expected throughput.

Pre-Trained Image Processing Transformer

As the computing power of modern hardware is increasing strongly, pre-trained deep learning models (e.g., BERT, GPT-3) learned on large-scale datasets have shown their effectiveness over conventional methods. The big progress is mainly contributed to the representation ability of transformer and its variant architectures. In this paper, we study the low-level computer vision task (e.g., denoising, super-resolution and deraining) and develop a new pre-trained model, namely, image processing transformer (IPT). To maximally excavate the capability of transformer, we present to utilize the well-known ImageNet benchmark for generating a large amount of corrupted image pairs. The IPT model is trained on these images with multi-heads and multi-tails. In addition, the contrastive learning is introduced for well adapting to different image processing tasks. The pre-trained model can therefore efficiently employed on desired task after fine-tuning. With only one pre-trained model, IPT outperforms the current state-of-the-art methods on various low-level benchmarks. CLIP4Caption: CLIP for Video Caption

Video captioning is a challenging task since it requires generating sentences describing various diverse and complex videos. Existing video captioning models lack adequate visual representation due to the neglect of the existence of gaps between videos and texts. To bridge this gap, in this paper, we propose a CLIP4Caption framework that improves video captioning based on a CLIP-enhanced video-text matching network (VTM). This framework is taking full advantage of the information from both vision and language and enforcing the model to learn strongly text-correlated video features for text generation. Besides, unlike most existing models using LSTM or GRU as the sentence decoder, we adopt a Transformer structured decoder network to effectively learn the long-range visual and language dependency. Additionally, we introduce a novel ensemble strategy for captioning tasks. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on two datasets: 1) on MSR-VTT dataset, our method achieved a new state-of-the-art result with a significant gain of up to 10% in CIDEr; 2) on the private test data, our method ranking 2nd place in the ACM MM multimedia grand challenge 2021: Pre-training for Video Understanding Challenge. It is noted that our model is only trained on the MSR-VTT dataset.

LICHEE: Improving Language Model Pre-training with Multi-grained Tokenization

Language model pre-training based on large corpora has achieved tremendous success in terms of constructing enriched contextual representations and has led to significant performance gains on a diverse range of Natural Language Understanding (NLU) tasks. Despite the success, most current pre-trained language models, such as BERT, are trained based on single-grained tokenization, usually with fine-grained characters or sub-words, making it hard for them to learn the precise meaning of coarse-grained words and phrases. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective pre-training method named LICHEE to efficiently incorporate multi-grained information of input text. Our method can be applied to various pre-trained language models and improve their representation capability. Extensive experiments conducted on CLUE and SuperGLUE demonstrate that our method achieves comprehensive improvements on a wide variety of NLU tasks in both Chinese and English with little extra inference cost incurred, and that our best ensemble model achieves the state-of-the-art performance on CLUE benchmark competition.

Post-Training Quantization for Vision Transformer

Recently, transformer has achieved remarkable performance on a variety of computer vision applications. Compared with mainstream convolutional neural networks, vision transformers are often of sophisticated architectures for extracting powerful feature representations, which are more difficult to be developed on mobile devices. In this paper, we present an effective post-training quantization algorithm for reducing the memory storage and computational costs of vision transformers. Basically, the quantization task can be regarded as finding the optimal low-bit quantization intervals for weights and inputs, respectively. To preserve the functionality of the attention mechanism, we introduce a ranking loss into the conventional quantization objective that aims to keep the relative order of the self-attention results after quantization. Moreover, we thoroughly analyze the relationship between quantization loss of different layers and the feature diversity, and explore a mixed-precision quantization scheme by exploiting the nuclear norm of each attention map and output feature. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified on several benchmark models and datasets, which outperforms the state-of-the-art post-training quantization algorithms. For instance, we can obtain an 81.29\% top-1 accuracy using DeiT-B model on ImageNet dataset with about 8-bit quantization.

Flex: Closing the Gaps between Usage and Allocation

Data centers are giant factories of Internet data and services. Worldwide data centers consume energy and emit emissions more than airline industry. Unfortunately, most of data centers are significantly underutilized. One of the major reasons is the big gaps between the real usage and the provisioned resources because users tend to over-estimate their demand and data center operators often rely on users' requests for resource allocation. In this paper, we first conduct an in-depth analysis of a Google cluster trace to unveil the root causes for low utilization and highlight the great potential to improve it. We then developed an online resource manager Flex to maximize the cluster utilization while satisfying the Quality of Service (QoS). Large-scale evaluations based on real-world traces show that Flex admits up to 1.74x more requests and 1.6x higher utilization compared to tradition schedulers while maintaining the QoS.

BoPF: Mitigating the Burstiness-Fairness Tradeoff in Multi-Resource Clusters

Simultaneously supporting latency- and throughout-sensitive workloads in a shared environment is an increasingly more common challenge in big data clusters. Despite many advances, existing cluster schedulers force the same performance goal - fairness in most cases - on all jobs. Latency-sensitive jobs suffer, while throughput-sensitive ones thrive. Using prioritization does the opposite: it opens up a path for latency-sensitive jobs to dominate. In this paper, we tackle the challenges in supporting both short-term performance and long-term fairness simultaneously with high resource utilization by proposing Bounded Priority Fairness (BoPF). BoPF provides short-term resource guarantees to latency-sensitive jobs and maintains long-term fairness for throughput-sensitive jobs. BoPF is the first scheduler that can provide long-term fairness, burst guarantee, and Pareto efficiency in a strategyproof manner for multi-resource scheduling. Deployments and large-scale simulations show that BoPF closely approximates the performance of Strict Priority as well as the fairness characteristics of DRF. In deployments, BoPF speeds up latency-sensitive jobs by 5.38 times compared to DRF, while still maintaining long-term fairness. In the meantime, BoPF improves the average completion times of throughput-sensitive jobs by up to 3.05 times compared to Strict Priority.
