Floorplet: Performance-aware Floorplan Framework for Chiplet Integration

A chiplet is an integrated circuit that encompasses a well-defined subset of an overall system's functionality. In contrast to traditional monolithic system-on-chips (SoCs), chiplet-based architecture can reduce costs and increase reusability, representing a promising avenue for continuing Moore's Law. Despite the advantages of multi-chiplet architectures, floorplan design in a chiplet-based architecture has received limited attention. Conflicts between cost and performance necessitate a trade-off in chiplet floorplan design since additional latency introduced by advanced packaging can decrease performance. Consequently, balancing power, performance, cost, area, and reliability is of paramount importance. To address this challenge, we propose Floorplet, a framework comprising simulation tools for performance reporting and comprehensive models for cost and reliability optimization. Our framework employs the open-source Gem5 simulator to establish the relationship between performance and floorplan for the first time, guiding the floorplan optimization of multi-chiplet architecture. The experimental results show that our framework decreases inter-chiplet communication costs by 24.81%.

Improving Code-Switching and Named Entity Recognition in ASR with Speech Editing based Data Augmentation

Recently, end-to-end (E2E) automatic speech recognition (ASR) models have made great strides and exhibit excellent performance in general speech recognition. However, there remain several challenging scenarios that E2E models are not competent in, such as code-switching and named entity recognition (NER). Data augmentation is a common and effective practice for these two scenarios. However, the current data augmentation methods mainly rely on audio splicing and text-to-speech (TTS) models, which might result in discontinuous, unrealistic, and less diversified speech. To mitigate these potential issues, we propose a novel data augmentation method by applying the text-based speech editing model. The augmented speech from speech editing systems is more coherent and diversified, also more akin to real speech. The experimental results on code-switching and NER tasks show that our proposed method can significantly outperform the audio splicing and neural TTS based data augmentation systems.

A Roadmap for Big Model

With the rapid development of deep learning, training Big Models (BMs) for multiple downstream tasks becomes a popular paradigm. Researchers have achieved various outcomes in the construction of BMs and the BM application in many fields. At present, there is a lack of research work that sorts out the overall progress of BMs and guides the follow-up research. In this paper, we cover not only the BM technologies themselves but also the prerequisites for BM training and applications with BMs, dividing the BM review into four parts: Resource, Models, Key Technologies and Application. We introduce 16 specific BM-related topics in those four parts, they are Data, Knowledge, Computing System, Parallel Training System, Language Model, Vision Model, Multi-modal Model, Theory&Interpretability, Commonsense Reasoning, Reliability&Security, Governance, Evaluation, Machine Translation, Text Generation, Dialogue and Protein Research. In each topic, we summarize clearly the current studies and propose some future research directions. At the end of this paper, we conclude the further development of BMs in a more general view.

Exploring Data and Knowledge combined Anomaly Explanation of Multivariate Industrial Data

The demand for high-performance anomaly detection techniques of IoT data becomes urgent, especially in industry field. The anomaly identification and explanation in time series data is one essential task in IoT data mining. Since that the existing anomaly detection techniques focus on the identification of anomalies, the explanation of anomalies is not well-solved. We address the anomaly explanation problem for multivariate IoT data and propose a 3-step self-contained method in this paper. We formalize and utilize the domain knowledge in our method, and identify the anomalies by the violation of constraints. We propose set-cover-based anomaly explanation algorithms to discover the anomaly events reflected by violation features, and further develop knowledge update algorithms to improve the original knowledge set. Experimental results on real datasets from large-scale IoT systems verify that our method computes high-quality explanation solutions of anomalies. Our work provides a guide to navigate the explicable anomaly detection in both IoT fault diagnosis and temporal data cleaning.

Quality Assurance Test of Silicon Photomultipliers and Electronic Boards for STAR Event Plane Detector

The event plane detector (EPD), installed in the Solenoid Tracker at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider located at the Brookhaven National Laboratory is a plastic scintillator-based device that measures the reaction centrality and event plane in the forward region of the relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We used silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays to detect the photons produced in the scintillator via the fiber connection. Signals from the SiPM arrays were amplified by the front-end electronic (FEE) board, and sent to the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) boards for further processing via the receiver(RX) board. The full EPD system consisted of 24 super-sectors (SSs); each SS was equipped with two SiPM boards, two FEE boards and two RX boards, and they corresponded to 744 readout channels. All these boards were mass produced at the University of Science and Technology of China, with a dedicated quality assurance (QA) procedures applied to identify any problems before deployment. This article describes the details of the QA method and the related test system. The QA test results are presented along with the discussions.

Auto-CASH: Autonomous Classification Algorithm Selection with Deep Q-Network

The great amount of datasets generated by various data sources have posed the challenge to machine learning algorithm selection and hyperparameter configuration. For a specific machine learning task, it usually takes domain experts plenty of time to select an appropriate algorithm and configure its hyperparameters. If the problem of algorithm selection and hyperparameter optimization can be solved automatically, the task will be executed more efficiently with performance guarantee. Such problem is also known as the CASH problem. Early work either requires a large amount of human labor, or suffers from high time or space complexity. In our work, we present Auto-CASH, a pre-trained model based on meta-learning, to solve the CASH problem more efficiently. Auto-CASH is the first approach that utilizes Deep Q-Network to automatically select the meta-features for each dataset, thus reducing the time cost tremendously without introducing too much human labor. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our model, we conduct extensive experiments on 120 real-world classification datasets. Compared with classical and the state-of-art CASH approaches, experimental results show that Auto-CASH achieves better performance within shorter time.

S2DNAS:Transforming Static CNN Model for Dynamic Inference via Neural Architecture Search

Recently, dynamic inference has emerged as a promising way to reduce the computational cost of deep convolutional neural network (CNN). In contrast to static methods (e.g. weight pruning), dynamic inference adaptively adjusts the inference process according to each input sample, which can considerably reduce the computational cost on "easy" samples while maintaining the overall model performance. In this paper, we introduce a general framework, S2DNAS, which can transform various static CNN models to support dynamic inference via neural architecture search. To this end, based on a given CNN model, we first generate a CNN architecture space in which each architecture is a multi-stage CNN generated from the given model using some predefined transformations. Then, we propose a reinforcement learning based approach to automatically search for the optimal CNN architecture in the generated space. At last, with the searched multi-stage network, we can perform dynamic inference by adaptively choosing a stage to evaluate for each sample. Unlike previous works that introduce irregular computations or complex controllers in the inference or re-design a CNN model from scratch, our method can generalize to most of the popular CNN architectures and the searched dynamic network can be directly deployed using existing deep learning frameworks in various hardware devices.

Core-Shell Nanofiber Containing Large Amount of Flame Retardants via Coaxial Dual-Nozzle Electrospinning as Battery Separators

Lithium-ion batteries have attracted enormous interests recently as promising power sources. However, the safety issue associated with the employment of highly flammable liquid electrolyte impedes the further development of next-generation lithium-ion batteries. Recently, researchers reported the use of electrospun core-shell fiber as the battery separator consisting of polymer layer as protective shell and flame retardants loaded inside as core. In case of a typical battery shorting, the protective polymer shell melts during thermal-runaway and the flame retardants inside would be released to suppress the combustion of the electrolyte. Due to the use of a single precursor solution for electrospinning containing both polymer and flame retardants, the weight ratio of flame retardants is limited and dependent. Herein, we developed a dual-nozzle, coaxial electrospinning approach to fabricate the core-shell nanofiber with a greatly enhanced flame retardants weight percentage in the final fibers. The weight ratio of flame retardants of triphenyl phosphate in the final composite reaches over 60 wt.%. The LiFePO4-based cell using this composite nanofiber as battery separator exhibits excellent flame-retardant property without compromising the cycling stability or rate performances. In addition, this functional nanofiber can also be coated onto commercial separators instead of being used directly as separators.

Jointly Adversarial Network to Wavelength Compensation and Dehazing of Underwater Images

Severe color casts, low contrast and blurriness of underwater images caused by light absorption and scattering result in a difficult task for exploring underwater environments. Different from most of previous underwater image enhancement methods that compute light attenuation along object-camera path through hazy image formation model, we propose a novel jointly wavelength compensation and dehazing network (JWCDN) that takes into account the wavelength attenuation along surface-object path and the scattering along object-camera path simultaneously. By embedding a simplified underwater formation model into generative adversarial network, we can jointly estimates the transmission map, wavelength attenuation and background light via different network modules, and uses the simplified underwater image formation model to recover degraded underwater images. Especially, a multi-scale densely connected encoder-decoder network is proposed to leverage features from multiple layers for estimating the transmission map. To further improve the recovered image, we use an edge preserving network module to enhance the detail of the recovered image. Moreover, to train the proposed network, we propose a novel underwater image synthesis method that generates underwater images with inherent optical properties of different water types. The synthesis method can simulate the color, contrast and blurriness appearance of real-world underwater environments simultaneously. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world underwater images demonstrate that the proposed method yields comparable or better results on both subjective and objective assessments, compared with several state-of-the-art methods.

Strong Photoluminescence Enhancement of MoS2 through Defect Engineering and Oxygen Bonding

We report on a strong photoluminescence (PL) enhancement of monolayer MoS2 through defect engineering and oxygen bonding. Micro- PL and Raman images clearly reveal that the PL enhancement occurs at cracks/defects formed during high temperature vacuum annealing. The PL enhancement at crack/defect sites could be as high as thousands of times after considering the laser spot size. The main reasons of such huge PL enhancement include: (1) the oxygen chemical adsorption induced heavy p doping and the conversion from trion to exciton; (2) the suppression of non-radiative recombination of excitons at defect sites as verified by low temperature PL measurements. First principle calculations reveal a strong binding energy of ~2.395 eV for oxygen molecule adsorbed on an S vacancy of MoS2. The chemical adsorbed oxygen also provides a much more effective charge transfer (0.997 electrons per O2) compared to physical adsorbed oxygen on ideal MoS2 surface. We also demonstrate that the defect engineering and oxygen bonding could be easily realized by oxygen plasma irradiation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy further confirms the formation of Mo-O bonding. Our results provide a new route for modulating the optical properties of two dimensional semiconductors. The strong and stable PL from defects sites of MoS2 may have promising applications in optoelectronic devices.

Plasma-assisted fabrication of monolayer phosphorene and its Raman characterization

There have been continuous efforts to seek for novel functional two-dimensional semiconductors with high performance for future applications in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. In this work, we introduce a successful experimental approach to fabricate monolayer phosphorene by mechanical cleavage and the following Ar+ plasma thinning process. The thickness of phosphorene is unambiguously determined by optical contrast combined with atomic force microscope (AFM). Raman spectroscopy is used to characterize the pristine and plasma-treated samples. The Raman frequency of A2g mode stiffens, and the intensity ratio of A2g to A1g modes shows monotonic discrete increase with the decrease of phosphorene thickness down to monolayer. All those phenomena can be used to identify the thickness of this novel two-dimensional semiconductor efficiently. This work for monolayer phosphorene fabrication and thickness determination will facilitates the research of phosphorene.
