Band-selective third-harmonic generation in superconducting MgB$_2$: Possible evidence for Higgs amplitude mode in the dirty limit

We report on time-resolved linear and nonlinear terahertz spectroscopy of the two-band superconductor MgB$_2$ with the superconducting transition temperature $T_c \approx 36$ K. Third-harmonic generation (THG) is observed below $T_c$ by driving the system with intense narrowband THz pulses. For the pump-pulse frequencies $f=$ 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 THz, temperature-dependent evolution of the THG signals exhibits a resonance maximum at the temperatures with the resonance conditions $2f=2Δ_π(T)$ fulfilled, for the dirty-limit superconducting gap $2Δ_π$. In contrast, for $f=$ 0.6 and 0.7 THz with $2f>2Δ_π(T\rightarrow0)=1.03$ THz, the THG intensity increases monotonically with decreasing temperature. Moreover, for $2f<2Δ_π(T\rightarrow0)$ the THG is found nearly isotropic with respect to the pump-pulse polarization. These results suggest a predominant contribution of the driven Higgs amplitude mode of the dirty-limit $π$-band superconducting gap, pointing to the importance of scattering for observation of the Higgs mode in superconductors.

CP violation in top quark decay via heavy Majorana neutrinos at the LHC

The tiny neutrino masses can be explained naturally by extending the standard model with right-handed Majorana neutrinos in low-scale seesaw mechanism, and the CP violation effect induced by Majorana phase is interesting and worth studying at colliders. In this paper, we investigate the prospects for measuring CP violation in top quark pair production and rare decay via Majorana neutrinos at the LHC. The CP asymmetry stems from the significant interference of contributions from two different Majorana neutrinos and can be appreciable when the two neutrino masses are nearly-degenerate. It is found that in the Majorana neutrino mass range of 10 GeV < mn < 80 GeV, the CP asymmetry is independent of the Majorana neutrino mass at the LHC. Any possible new observation of CP violation will be the clear evidence of new physics beyond the standard model.

Uplink Performance of Cell-Free Massive MIMO Over Spatially Correlated Rician Fading Channels

We consider a practical cell-free massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system with multi-antenna access points (APs) and spatially correlated Rician fading channels. The significant phase-shift of the line-of-sight component induced by the user equipment movement is modeled randomly. Furthermore, we investigate the uplink spectral efficiency (SE) with maximum ratio (MR)/local minimum mean squared error (L-MMSE) combining and optimal large-scale fading decoding based on the phase-aware MMSE, phase-aware element-wise MMSE and linear MMSE (LMMSE) estimators. Then new closed-form SE expressions with MR combining are derived. Numerical results validate our derived expressions and show that the SE benefits from the spatial correlation. It is important to observe that the performance gap between L-MMSE and MR combining increases with the number of antennas per AP and the SE of the LMMSE estimator is lower than that of other estimators due to the lack of phase-shifts knowledge.

ST-MAML: A Stochastic-Task based Method for Task-Heterogeneous Meta-Learning

Optimization-based meta-learning typically assumes tasks are sampled from a single distribution - an assumption oversimplifies and limits the diversity of tasks that meta-learning can model. Handling tasks from multiple different distributions is challenging for meta-learning due to a so-called task ambiguity issue. This paper proposes a novel method, ST-MAML, that empowers model-agnostic meta-learning (MAML) to learn from multiple task distributions. ST-MAML encodes tasks using a stochastic neural network module, that summarizes every task with a stochastic representation. The proposed Stochastic Task (ST) strategy allows a meta-model to get tailored for the current task and enables us to learn a distribution of solutions for an ambiguous task. ST-MAML also propagates the task representation to revise the encoding of input variables. Empirically, we demonstrate that ST-MAML matches or outperforms the state-of-the-art on two few-shot image classification tasks, one curve regression benchmark, one image completion problem, and a real-world temperature prediction application. To the best of authors' knowledge, this is the first time optimization-based meta-learning method being applied on a large-scale real-world task.

Learning Dynamical Human-Joint Affinity for 3D Pose Estimation in Videos

Graph Convolution Network (GCN) has been successfully used for 3D human pose estimation in videos. However, it is often built on the fixed human-joint affinity, according to human skeleton. This may reduce adaptation capacity of GCN to tackle complex spatio-temporal pose variations in videos. To alleviate this problem, we propose a novel Dynamical Graph Network (DG-Net), which can dynamically identify human-joint affinity, and estimate 3D pose by adaptively learning spatial/temporal joint relations from videos. Different from traditional graph convolution, we introduce Dynamical Spatial/Temporal Graph convolution (DSG/DTG) to discover spatial/temporal human-joint affinity for each video exemplar, depending on spatial distance/temporal movement similarity between human joints in this video. Hence, they can effectively understand which joints are spatially closer and/or have consistent motion, for reducing depth ambiguity and/or motion uncertainty when lifting 2D pose to 3D pose. We conduct extensive experiments on three popular benchmarks, e.g., Human3.6M, HumanEva-I, and MPI-INF-3DHP, where DG-Net outperforms a number of recent SOTA approaches with fewer input frames and model size.

Gibbs posterior inference on a Levy density under discrete sampling

In mathematical finance, Levy processes are widely used for their ability to model both continuous variation and abrupt, discontinuous jumps. These jumps are practically relevant, so reliable inference on the feature that controls jump frequencies and magnitudes, namely, the Levy density, is of critical importance. A specific obstacle to carrying out model-based (e.g., Bayesian) inference in such problems is that, for general Levy processes, the likelihood is intractable. To overcome this obstacle, here we adopt a Gibbs posterior framework that updates a prior distribution using a suitable loss function instead of a likelihood. We establish asymptotic posterior concentration rates for the proposed Gibbs posterior. In particular, in the most interesting and practically relevant case, we give conditions under which the Gibbs posterior concentrates at (nearly) the minimax optimal rate, adaptive to the unknown smoothness of the true Levy density.

Atomic-Scale Visualization and Manipulation of Domain boundaries in 2D Ferroelectric In2Se3

Domain boundaries in ferroelectric materials exhibit rich and diverse physical properties distinct from their parent materials and have been proposed for novel applications in nanoelectronics and quantum information technology. Due to their complexity and diversity, the internal atomic and electronic structure of domain boundaries that governs the electronic properties as well as the kinetics of domain switching remains far from being elucidated. By using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we directly visualize the atomic structure of domain boundaries in two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectric beta' In2Se3 down to the monolayer limit and reveal a double-barrier energy potential of the 60° tail to tail domain boundaries for the first time. We further controllably manipulate the domain boundaries with atomic precision by STM and show that the movements of domain boundaries can be driven by the electric field from an STM tip and proceed by the collective shifting of atoms at the domain boundaries. The results will deepen our understanding of domain boundaries in 2D ferroelectric materials and stimulate innovative applications of these materials.

Linearization of Virasoro symmetries associated with semisimple Frobenius manifolds

For any semisimple Frobenius manifold, we prove that a tau-symmetric bihamiltonian deformation of its Principal Hierarchy admits an infinite family of linearizable Virasoro symmetries if and only if all the central invariants of the corresponding deformation of the bihamiltonian structure are equal to $\frac{1}{24}$. As an important application of this result, we prove that the Dubrovin-Zhang hierarchy associated with the semisimple Frobenius manifold possesses a bihamiltonian structure which can be represented in terms of differential polynomials.

Variational Bihamiltonian Cohomologies and Integrable Hierarchies I: Foundations

This series of papers is devoted to the study of deformations of Virasoro symmetries of the principal hierarchies associated to semisimple Frobenius manifolds. The main tool we use is a generalization of the bihamiltonian cohomology called the variational bihamiltonian cohomology. In the present paper, we give its definitions and compute the associated cohomology groups that will be used in our study of deformations of Virasoro symmetries. To illustrate its application, we classify the conformal bihamiltonian structures with semisimple hydrodynamic limits.

Topic-Guided Abstractive Text Summarization: a Joint Learning Approach

We introduce a new approach for abstractive text summarization, Topic-Guided Abstractive Summarization, which calibrates long-range dependencies from topic-level features with globally salient content. The idea is to incorporate neural topic modeling with a Transformer-based sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) model in a joint learning framework. This design can learn and preserve the global semantics of the document, which can provide additional contextual guidance for capturing important ideas of the document, thereby enhancing the generation of summary. We conduct extensive experiments on two datasets and the results show that our proposed model outperforms many extractive and abstractive systems in terms of both ROUGE measurements and human evaluation. Our code is available at: https://github.com/chz816/tas.

Enhanced Seq2Seq Autoencoder via Contrastive Learning for Abstractive Text Summarization

In this paper, we present a denoising sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) autoencoder via contrastive learning for abstractive text summarization. Our model adopts a standard Transformer-based architecture with a multi-layer bi-directional encoder and an auto-regressive decoder. To enhance its denoising ability, we incorporate self-supervised contrastive learning along with various sentence-level document augmentation. These two components, seq2seq autoencoder and contrastive learning, are jointly trained through fine-tuning, which improves the performance of text summarization with regard to ROUGE scores and human evaluation. We conduct experiments on two datasets and demonstrate that our model outperforms many existing benchmarks and even achieves comparable performance to the state-of-the-art abstractive systems trained with more complex architecture and extensive computation resources.

Super tau-covers of bihamiltonian integrable hierarchies

We consider a certain super extension, called the super tau-cover, of a bihamiltonian integrable hierarchy which contains the Hamiltonian structures including both the local and non-local ones as odd flows. In particular, we construct the super tau-cover of the principal hierarchy associated with an arbitrary Frobenius manifold, and the super tau-cover of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) hierarchy. We also show that the Virasoro symmetries of these bihamiltonan integrable hierarchies can be extended to symmetries of the associated super tau-covers.

POSO: Personalized Cold Start Modules for Large-scale Recommender Systems

Recommendation for new users, also called user cold start, has been a well-recognized challenge for online recommender systems. Most existing methods view the crux as the lack of initial data. However, in this paper, we argue that there are neglected problems: 1) New users' behaviour follows much different distributions from regular users. 2) Although personalized features are involved, heavily imbalanced samples prevent the model from balancing new/regular user distributions, as if the personalized features are overwhelmed. We name the problem as the "submergence" of personalization. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel module: Personalized COld Start MOdules (POSO). Considering from a model architecture perspective, POSO personalizes existing modules by introducing multiple user-group-specialized sub-modules. Then, it fuses their outputs by personalized gates, resulting in comprehensive representations. In such way, POSO projects imbalanced features to even modules. POSO can be flexibly integrated into many existing modules and effectively improves their performance with negligible computational overheads. The proposed method shows remarkable advantage in industrial scenario. It has been deployed on the large-scale recommender system of Kwai, and improves new user Watch Time by a large margin (+7.75%). Moreover, POSO can be further generalized to regular users, inactive users and returning users (+2%-3% on Watch Time), as well as item cold start (+3.8% on Watch Time). Its effectiveness has also been verified on public dataset (MovieLens 20M). We believe such practical experience can be well generalized to other scenarios.

ST3D++: Denoised Self-training for Unsupervised Domain Adaptation on 3D Object Detection

In this paper, we present a self-training method, named ST3D++, with a holistic pseudo label denoising pipeline for unsupervised domain adaptation on 3D object detection. ST3D++ aims at reducing noise in pseudo label generation as well as alleviating the negative impacts of noisy pseudo labels on model training. First, ST3D++ pre-trains the 3D object detector on the labeled source domain with random object scaling (ROS) which is designed to reduce target domain pseudo label noise arising from object scale bias of the source domain. Then, the detector is progressively improved through alternating between generating pseudo labels and training the object detector with pseudo-labeled target domain data. Here, we equip the pseudo label generation process with a hybrid quality-aware triplet memory to improve the quality and stability of generated pseudo labels. Meanwhile, in the model training stage, we propose a source data assisted training strategy and a curriculum data augmentation policy to effectively rectify noisy gradient directions and avoid model over-fitting to noisy pseudo labeled data. These specific designs enable the detector to be trained on meticulously refined pseudo labeled target data with denoised training signals, and thus effectively facilitate adapting an object detector to a target domain without requiring annotations. Finally, our method is assessed on four 3D benchmark datasets (i.e., Waymo, KITTI, Lyft, and nuScenes) for three common categories (i.e., car, pedestrian and bicycle). ST3D++ achieves state-of-the-art performance on all evaluated settings, outperforming the corresponding baseline by a large margin (e.g., 9.6% $\sim$ 38.16% on Waymo $\rightarrow$ KITTI in terms of AP$_{\text{3D}}$), and even surpasses the fully supervised oracle results on the KITTI 3D object detection benchmark with target prior. Code will be available.

On-chip multi-color microdisk laser on Yb3+-doped thin-film lithium niobate

We demonstrate an on-chip Yb3+-doped lithium niobate (LN) microdisk laser. The intrinsic quality factors of the fabricated Yb3+-doped LN microdisk resonator are measured up to 3.79x10^5 at 976 nm wavelength and 1.1x10^6 at 1514 nm wavelength. The multi-mode laser emissions are obtained in a band from 1020 nm to 1070 nm pumped by 984 nm laser and with the low threshold of 103 μW, resulting in a slope efficiency of 0.53% at room temperature. Furthermore, the second-harmonic frequency of pump light and the sum-frequency of the pump light and laser emissions are both generated in the on-chip Yb3+-doped LN microdisk benefited from the strong \c{hi}(2) nonlinearity of LN. These microdisk lasers are expected to contribute to the high-density integration of LNOI-based photonic chip.

A Credibility-aware Swarm-Federated Deep Learning Framework in Internet of Vehicles

Federated Deep Learning (FDL) is helping to realize distributed machine learning in the Internet of Vehicles (IoV). However, FDL's global model needs multiple clients to upload learning model parameters, thus still existing unavoidable communication overhead and data privacy risks. The recently proposed Swarm Learning (SL) provides a decentralized machine-learning approach uniting edge computing and blockchain-based coordination without the need for a central coordinator. This paper proposes a Swarm-Federated Deep Learning framework in the IoV system (IoV-SFDL) that integrates SL into the FDL framework. The IoV-SFDL organizes vehicles to generate local SL models with adjacent vehicles based on the blockchain empowered SL, then aggregates the global FDL model among different SL groups with a proposed credibility weights prediction algorithm. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that compared with the baseline frameworks, the proposed IoV-SFDL framework achieves a 16.72% reduction in edge-to-global communication overhead while improving about 5.02% in model performance with the same training iterations.

Reconstructing a dynamical system and forecasting time series by self-consistent deep learning

We introduce a self-consistent deep-learning framework which, for a noisy deterministic time series, provides unsupervised filtering, state-space reconstruction, identification of the underlying differential equations and forecasting. Without a priori information on the signal, we embed the time series in a state space, where deterministic structures, i.e. attractors, are revealed. Under the assumption that the evolution of solution trajectories is described by an unknown dynamical system, we filter out stochastic outliers. The embedding function, the solution trajectories and the dynamical systems are constructed using deep neural networks, respectively. By exploiting the differentiability of the neural solution trajectory, the neural dynamical system is defined locally at each time, mitigating the need for propagating gradients through numerical solvers. On a chaotic time series masked by additive Gaussian noise, we demonstrate the filtering ability and the predictive power of the proposed framework.
