Accelerating Real-Time Coupled Cluster Methods with Single-Precision Arithmetic and Adaptive Numerical Integration

We explore the framework of a real-time coupled cluster method with a focus on improving its computational efficiency. Propagation of the wave function via the time-dependent Schrödinger equation places high demands on computing resources, particularly for high level theories such as coupled cluster with polynomial scaling. Similar to earlier investigations of coupled cluster properties, we demonstrate that the use of single-precision arithmetic reduces both the storage and multiplicative costs of the real-time simulation by approximately a factor of two with no significant impact on the resulting UV/vis absorption spectrum computed via the Fourier transform of the time-dependent dipole moment. Additional speedups of up to a factor of 14 in test simulations of water clusters are obtained via a straightforward GPU-based implementation as compared to conventional CPU calculations. We also find that further performance optimization is accessible through sagacious selection of numerical integration algorithms, and the adaptive methods, such as the Cash-Karp integrator provide an effective balance between computing costs and numerical stability. Finally, we demonstrate that a simple mixed-step integrator based on the conventional fourth-order Runge-Kutta approach is capable of stable propagations even for strong external fields, provided the time step is appropriately adapted to the duration of the laser pulse with only minimal computational overhead.

Multifunctional Two-dimensional van der Waals Janus Magnet Cr-based Dichalcogenide Halides

Two-dimensional van der Waals Janus materials and their heterostructures offer fertile platforms for designing fascinating functionalities. Here, by means of systematic first-principles studies on van der Waals Janus monolayer Cr-based dichalcogenide halides CrYX (Y=S, Se, Te; X=Cl, Br, I), we find that CrSX (X=Cl, Br, I) are the very desirable high TC ferromagnetic semiconductors with an out-of-plane magnetization. Excitingly, by the benefit of the large magnetic moments on ligand S2- anions, the sought-after large-gap quantum anomalous Hall effect and sizable valley splitting can be achieved through the magnetic proximity effect in van der Waals heterostructures CrSBr/Bi2Se3/CrSBr and MoTe2/CrSBr, respectively. Additionally, we show that large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions give rise to skyrmion states in CrTeX (X=Cl, Br, I) under external magnetic fields. Our work reveals that two-dimensional Janus magnet Cr-based dichalcogenide halides have appealing multifunctionalities in the applications of topological electronic and valleytronic devices.

The Best of Both Worlds: Combining Model-based and Nonparametric Approaches for 3D Human Body Estimation

Nonparametric based methods have recently shown promising results in reconstructing human bodies from monocular images while model-based methods can help correct these estimates and improve prediction. However, estimating model parameters from global image features may lead to noticeable misalignment between the estimated meshes and image evidence. To address this issue and leverage the best of both worlds, we propose a framework of three consecutive modules. A dense map prediction module explicitly establishes the dense UV correspondence between the image evidence and each part of the body model. The inverse kinematics module refines the key point prediction and generates a posed template mesh. Finally, a UV inpainting module relies on the corresponding feature, prediction and the posed template, and completes the predictions of occluded body shape. Our framework leverages the best of non-parametric and model-based methods and is also robust to partial occlusion. Experiments demonstrate that our framework outperforms existing 3D human estimation methods on multiple public benchmarks.

Beyond Data Samples: Aligning Differential Networks Estimation with Scientific Knowledge

Learning the differential statistical dependency network between two contexts is essential for many real-life applications, mostly in the high dimensional low sample regime. In this paper, we propose a novel differential network estimator that allows integrating various sources of knowledge beyond data samples. The proposed estimator is scalable to a large number of variables and achieves a sharp asymptotic convergence rate. Empirical experiments on extensive simulated data and four real-world applications (one on neuroimaging and three from functional genomics) show that our approach achieves improved differential network estimation and provides better supports to downstream tasks like classification. Our results highlight significant benefits of integrating group, spatial and anatomic knowledge during differential genetic network identification and brain connectome change discovery.

The Potential to Probe Solar Neutrino Physics with LiCl Water Solution

Lithium chloride water solution is a good option for solar neutrino detection. The $ν_e$ charged-current (CC) interaction cross-section on $\rm{{}^{7}Li}$ is evaluated with new B(GT) experimental measurements. The total CC interaction cross-section weighted by the solar $^8$B electron neutrino spectrum is $3.759\times10^{-42} \rm{cm}^2$, which is about 60 times that of the neutrino-electron elastic scattering process. The final state effective kinetic energy after the CC interaction on $\rm{{}^{7}Li}$ directly reflects the neutrino energy, which stands in sharp contrast to the plateau structure of recoil electrons of the elastic scattering. With the high solubility of LiCl of 74.5 g/100 g water at 10$^\circ$C and the high natural abundance of 92.41%, the molarity of $\rm{{}^{7}Li}$ in water can reach 11 mol/L for safe operation at room temperature. The CC event rate of $ν_e$ on $\rm{{}^{7}Li}$ in the LiCl water solution is comparable to that of neutrino-electron elastic scattering. In addition, the $ν_e$ CC interaction with the contained $\rm{{}^{37}Cl}$ also contributes a few percent of the total CC event rate. The contained $\rm{{}^{35}Cl}$ and $\rm{{}^{6}Li}$ also make a delay-coincidence detection for electron antineutrinos possible. The recrystallization method is found to be applicable for LiCl sample purification. The measured attenuation length of $11\pm1$ m at 430 nm shows that the LiCl solution is practicable for a 10-m diameter detector for solar neutrino detection. Clear advantages are found in studying the upturn effect of solar neutrino oscillation, light sterile neutrinos, and Earth matter effect. The sensitivities in discovering solar neutrino upturn and light sterile neutrinos are shown.

Measuring CP violation in rare $W$ decays at the LHC

Heavy Majorana neutrinos beyond the standard model can simultaneously explain the origin of tiny neutrino masses and matter-antimatter asymmetry in our Universe. The existence of heavy Majorana neutrinos will also lead to lepton number violation and the rare lepton-number-violating $W$ decays are possible. With contributions from two different Majorana neutrinos, a nonzero CP asymmetry may be generated from the rate difference between $W$ decay and its CP-conjugate process. The aim of this paper is to investigate the prospects for measuring CP violation in rare $W$ decays via Majorana neutrinos at the LHC. Our calculations show that the induced CP asymmetry is independent of the Majorana neutrino mass for $10~ \rm GeV < m_N < 70 ~\rm GeV$. Such a CP asymmetry if observed, would in turn provide unambiguous evidence of new physics beyond the standard model.

Uplink Performance of Cell-Free Massive MIMO with Multi-Antenna Users Over Jointly-Correlated Rayleigh Fading Channels

In this paper, we investigate a cell-free massive MIMO system with both access points (APs) and user equipments (UEs) equipped with multiple antennas over jointly-correlated Rayleigh fading channels. We study four uplink implementations, from fully centralized processing to fully distributed processing, and derive their achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expressions with minimum mean-squared error successive interference cancellation (MMSE-SIC) detectors and arbitrary combining schemes. Furthermore, the global and local MMSE combining schemes are derived based on full and local channel state information (CSI) obtained under pilot contamination, which can maximize the achievable SE for the fully centralized and distributed implementation, respectively. We study a two-layer decoding implementation with an arbitrary combining scheme in the first layer and optimal large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) in the second layer. Besides, we compute novel closed-form SE expressions for the two-layer decoding implementation with maximum ratio (MR) combining. In the numerical results, we compare the SE performance for different implementation levels, combining schemes, and channel models. It is important to note that increasing the number of antennas per UE may degrade the SE performance.

On-chip integrated Yb3+-doped waveguide amplifiers on thin film lithium niobate

We report the fabrication and optical characterization of Yb3+-doped waveguide amplifiers (YDWA) on the thin film lithium niobate fabricated by photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching. The fabricated Yb3+-doped lithium niobate waveguides demonstrates low propagation loss of 0.13 dB/cm at 1030 nm and 0.1 dB/cm at 1060 nm. The internal net gain of 5 dB at 1030 nm and 8 dB at 1060 nm are measured on a 4.0 cm long waveguide pumped by 976nm laser diodes, indicating the gain per unit length of 1.25 dB/cm at 1030 nm and 2 dB/cm at 1060 nm, respectively. The integrated Yb3+-doped lithium niobate waveguide amplifiers will benefit the development of a powerful gain platform and are expected to contribute to the high-density integration of thin film lithium niobate based photonic chip.

Learning Versatile Neural Architectures by Propagating Network Codes

This work explores how to design a single neural network capable of adapting to multiple heterogeneous vision tasks, such as image segmentation, 3D detection, and video recognition. This goal is challenging because both network architecture search (NAS) spaces and methods in different tasks are inconsistent. We solve this challenge from both sides. We first introduce a unified design space for multiple tasks and build a multitask NAS benchmark (NAS-Bench-MR) on many widely used datasets, including ImageNet, Cityscapes, KITTI, and HMDB51. We further propose Network Coding Propagation (NCP), which back-propagates gradients of neural predictors to directly update architecture codes along the desired gradient directions to solve various tasks. In this way, optimal architecture configurations can be found by NCP in our large search space in seconds. Unlike prior arts of NAS that typically focus on a single task, NCP has several unique benefits. (1) NCP transforms architecture optimization from data-driven to architecture-driven, enabling joint search an architecture among multitasks with different data distributions. (2) NCP learns from network codes but not original data, enabling it to update the architecture efficiently across datasets. (3) In addition to our NAS-Bench-MR, NCP performs well on other NAS benchmarks, such as NAS-Bench-201. (4) Thorough studies of NCP on inter-, cross-, and intra-tasks highlight the importance of cross-task neural architecture design, i.e., multitask neural architectures and architecture transferring between different tasks. Code is available at https://github.com/dingmyu/NCP.

Nonequilibrium dynamics of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ -- a time-resolved magneto-optical spectroscopy study

We present time-resolved magneto-optical spectroscopy on the magnetic Mott-Hubbard-insulating Kitaev spin liquid candidate $α$-RuCl$_3$ to investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of its antiferromagnetically ordered zigzag groundstate after photoexcitation. A systematic study of the transient magnetic linear dichroism under different experimental conditions (temperature, external magnetic field, photoexcitation density) gives direct access to the dynamical interplay of charge excitations with the zigzag ordered state on ultrashort time scales. We observe a rather slow initial demagnetization (few to 10s of ps) followed by a long-lived non-thermal antiferromagnetic spin-disordered state (100$-$1000s of ps), which can be understood in terms of holons and doublons disordering the antiferromagnetic background after photoexcitation. Varying temperature and fluence in the presence of an external magnetic field reveals two distinct photoinduced dynamics associated with the zigzag and quantum paramagnetic disordered phases. The photo-induced non-thermal spin-disordered state shows universal compressed-exponential recovery dynamics related to the growth and propagation of zigzag domains on nanosecond time scales, which is interpreted within the framework of the Fatuzzo-Labrune model for magnetization reversal. The study of nonequilibrium states in strongly correlated materials is a relatively unexplored topic, but our results are expected to be extendable to a large class of Mott-Hubbard insulator materials with strong spin-orbit coupling.

Iteratively Weighted MMSE Uplink Precoding for Cell-Free Massive MIMO

In this paper, we investigate a cell-free massive MIMO system with both access points and user equipments equipped with multiple antennas over the Weichselberger Rayleigh fading channel. We study the uplink spectral efficiency (SE) based on a two-layer decoding structure with maximum ratio (MR) or local minimum mean-square error (MMSE) combining applied in the first layer and optimal large-scale fading decoding method implemented in the second layer, respectively. To maximize the weighted sum SE, an uplink precoding structure based on an Iteratively Weighted sum-MMSE (I-WMMSE) algorithm using only channel statistics is proposed. Furthermore, with MR combining applied in the first layer, we derive novel achievable SE expressions and optimal precoding structures in closed-form. Numerical results validate our proposed results and show that the I-WMMSE precoding can achieve excellent sum SE performance.

Magneto-optical study of metamagnetic transitions in the antiferromagnetic phase of $α$-RuCl$_3$

$α$-RuCl$_3$ is a promising candidate material to realize the so far elusive quantum spin liquid ground state. However, at low temperatures, the coexistence of different exchange interactions couple the effective pseudospins into an antiferromagnetically zigzag (ZZ) ordered state. The low-field evolution of spin structure is still a matter of debate and the magnetic anisotropy within the honeycomb planes is an open and challenging question. Here, we investigate the evolution of the ZZ order parameter by second-order magneto-optical effects, the magnetic linear dichroism and magnetic linear birefringence. Our results clarify the presence and nature of metamagnetic transitions in the ZZ phase of $α$-RuCl$_3$. Our experimental observations show the presence of initial magnetic domain repopulation followed by a spin-flop transition for small in-plane applied magnetic fields ($\approx$ 1.6 T) along specific crystallographic directions. In addition, using a magneto-optical approach, we detected the recently reported emergence of a field-induced intermediate phase before suppressing the ZZ order. Our results disclose the details of various angle-dependent in-plane metamagnetic transitions quantifying the bond-anisotropic interactions present in $α$-RuCl$_3$

SoftTRR: Protect Page Tables Against RowHammer Attacks using Software-only Target Row Refresh

Rowhammer attacks that corrupt level-1 page tables to gain kernel privilege are the most detrimental to system security and hard to mitigate. However, recently proposed software-only mitigations are not effective against such kernel privilege escalation attacks. In this paper, we propose an effective and practical software-only defense, called SoftTRR, to protect page tables from all existing rowhammer attacks on x86. The key idea of SoftTRR is to refresh the rows occupied by page tables when a suspicious rowhammer activity is detected. SoftTRR is motivated by DRAM-chip-based target row refresh (ChipTRR) but eliminates its main security limitation (i.e., ChipTRR tracks a limited number of rows and thus can be bypassed by many-sided hammer). Specifically, SoftTRR protects an unlimited number of page tables by tracking memory accesses to the rows that are in close proximity to page-table rows and refreshing the page-table rows once the tracked access count exceeds a pre-defined threshold. We implement a prototype of SoftTRR as a loadable kernel module, and evaluate its security effectiveness, performance overhead, and memory consumption. The experimental results show that SoftTRR protects page tables from real-world rowhammer attacks and incurs small performance overhead as well as memory cost.

Geometric Pose Affordance: 3D Human Pose with Scene Constraints

Full 3D estimation of human pose from a single image remains a challenging task despite many recent advances. In this paper, we explore the hypothesis that strong prior information about scene geometry can be used to improve pose estimation accuracy. To tackle this question empirically, we have assembled a novel $\textbf{Geometric Pose Affordance}$ dataset, consisting of multi-view imagery of people interacting with a variety of rich 3D environments. We utilized a commercial motion capture system to collect gold-standard estimates of pose and construct accurate geometric 3D CAD models of the scene itself. To inject prior knowledge of scene constraints into existing frameworks for pose estimation from images, we introduce a novel, view-based representation of scene geometry, a $\textbf{multi-layer depth map}$, which employs multi-hit ray tracing to concisely encode multiple surface entry and exit points along each camera view ray direction. We propose two different mechanisms for integrating multi-layer depth information pose estimation: input as encoded ray features used in lifting 2D pose to full 3D, and secondly as a differentiable loss that encourages learned models to favor geometrically consistent pose estimates. We show experimentally that these techniques can improve the accuracy of 3D pose estimates, particularly in the presence of occlusion and complex scene geometry.

TransFusion: Cross-view Fusion with Transformer for 3D Human Pose Estimation

Estimating the 2D human poses in each view is typically the first step in calibrated multi-view 3D pose estimation. But the performance of 2D pose detectors suffers from challenging situations such as occlusions and oblique viewing angles. To address these challenges, previous works derive point-to-point correspondences between different views from epipolar geometry and utilize the correspondences to merge prediction heatmaps or feature representations. Instead of post-prediction merge/calibration, here we introduce a transformer framework for multi-view 3D pose estimation, aiming at directly improving individual 2D predictors by integrating information from different views. Inspired by previous multi-modal transformers, we design a unified transformer architecture, named TransFusion, to fuse cues from both current views and neighboring views. Moreover, we propose the concept of epipolar field to encode 3D positional information into the transformer model. The 3D position encoding guided by the epipolar field provides an efficient way of encoding correspondences between pixels of different views. Experiments on Human 3.6M and Ski-Pose show that our method is more efficient and has consistent improvements compared to other fusion methods. Specifically, we achieve 25.8 mm MPJPE on Human 3.6M with only 5M parameters on 256 x 256 resolution.

AdaStereo: An Efficient Domain-Adaptive Stereo Matching Approach

Recently, records on stereo matching benchmarks are constantly broken by end-to-end disparity networks. However, the domain adaptation ability of these deep models is quite limited. Addressing such problem, we present a novel domain-adaptive approach called AdaStereo that aims to align multi-level representations for deep stereo matching networks. Compared to previous methods, our AdaStereo realizes a more standard, complete and effective domain adaptation pipeline. Firstly, we propose a non-adversarial progressive color transfer algorithm for input image-level alignment. Secondly, we design an efficient parameter-free cost normalization layer for internal feature-level alignment. Lastly, a highly related auxiliary task, self-supervised occlusion-aware reconstruction is presented to narrow the gaps in output space. We perform intensive ablation studies and break-down comparisons to validate the effectiveness of each proposed module. With no extra inference overhead and only a slight increase in training complexity, our AdaStereo models achieve state-of-the-art cross-domain performance on multiple benchmarks, including KITTI, Middlebury, ETH3D and DrivingStereo, even outperforming some state-of-the-art disparity networks finetuned with target-domain ground-truths. Moreover, based on two additional evaluation metrics, the superiority of our domain-adaptive stereo matching pipeline is further uncovered from more perspectives. Finally, we demonstrate that our method is robust to various domain adaptation settings, and can be easily integrated into quick adaptation application scenarios and real-world deployments.

Scalable synthesis of 2D van der Waals superlattices

Heterostructure materials form the basis of much of modern electronics, from transistors to lasers and light-emitting diodes. Recent years have seen a renewed focus on creating heterostructures through the vertical integration of two-dimensional materials, including graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). However, fundamental challenges associated with materials processing have limited material quality and impeded scalability. We demonstrate a method to convert sub-nanometer metal films deposited on silicon and sapphire into TMDC heterostructures through vapor-phase processing. The resulting heterostructures and superlattices exhibit novel properties compared with stand-alone TMDCs, including reduced bandgap, enhanced light-matter coupling, and improved catalytic performance. This robust and scalable synthetic method provides new opportunities to generate a wide range of artificially stacked 2D superlattices with controlled morphology and composition.

SSCAP: Self-supervised Co-occurrence Action Parsing for Unsupervised Temporal Action Segmentation

Temporal action segmentation is a task to classify each frame in the video with an action label. However, it is quite expensive to annotate every frame in a large corpus of videos to construct a comprehensive supervised training dataset. Thus in this work we propose an unsupervised method, namely SSCAP, that operates on a corpus of unlabeled videos and predicts a likely set of temporal segments across the videos. SSCAP leverages Self-Supervised learning to extract distinguishable features and then applies a novel Co-occurrence Action Parsing algorithm to not only capture the correlation among sub-actions underlying the structure of activities, but also estimate the temporal path of the sub-actions in an accurate and general way. We evaluate on both classic datasets (Breakfast, 50Salads) and the emerging fine-grained action dataset (FineGym) with more complex activity structures and similar sub-actions. Results show that SSCAP achieves state-of-the-art performance on all datasets and can even outperform some weakly-supervised approaches, demonstrating its effectiveness and generalizability.
