Cross-City Matters: A Multimodal Remote Sensing Benchmark Dataset for Cross-City Semantic Segmentation using High-Resolution Domain Adaptation Networks

Artificial intelligence (AI) approaches nowadays have gained remarkable success in single-modality-dominated remote sensing (RS) applications, especially with an emphasis on individual urban environments (e.g., single cities or regions). Yet these AI models tend to meet the performance bottleneck in the case studies across cities or regions, due to the lack of diverse RS information and cutting-edge solutions with high generalization ability. To this end, we build a new set of multimodal remote sensing benchmark datasets (including hyperspectral, multispectral, SAR) for the study purpose of the cross-city semantic segmentation task (called C2Seg dataset), which consists of two cross-city scenes, i.e., Berlin-Augsburg (in Germany) and Beijing-Wuhan (in China). Beyond the single city, we propose a high-resolution domain adaptation network, HighDAN for short, to promote the AI model's generalization ability from the multi-city environments. HighDAN is capable of retaining the spatially topological structure of the studied urban scene well in a parallel high-to-low resolution fusion fashion but also closing the gap derived from enormous differences of RS image representations between different cities by means of adversarial learning. In addition, the Dice loss is considered in HighDAN to alleviate the class imbalance issue caused by factors across cities. Extensive experiments conducted on the C2Seg dataset show the superiority of our HighDAN in terms of segmentation performance and generalization ability, compared to state-of-the-art competitors. The C2Seg dataset and the semantic segmentation toolbox (involving the proposed HighDAN) will be available publicly at https://github.com/danfenghong.

Towards Efficient Control Flow Handling in Spatial Architecture via Architecting the Control Flow Plane

Spatial architecture is a high-performance architecture that uses control flow graphs and data flow graphs as the computational model and producer/consumer models as the execution models. However, existing spatial architectures suffer from control flow handling challenges. Upon categorizing their PE execution models, we find that they lack autonomous, peer-to-peer, and temporally loosely-coupled control flow handling capability. This leads to limited performance in intensive control programs. A spatial architecture, Marionette, is proposed, with an explicit-designed control flow plane. The Control Flow Plane enables autonomous, peer-to-peer and temporally loosely-coupled control flow handling. The Proactive PE Configuration ensures timely and computation-overlapped configuration to improve handling Branch Divergence. The Agile PE Assignment enhance the pipeline performance of Imperfect Loops. We develop full stack of Marionette (ISA, compiler, simulator, RTL) and demonstrate that in a variety of challenging intensive control programs, compared to state-of-the-art spatial architectures, Marionette outperforms Softbrain, TIA, REVEL, and RipTide by geomean 2.88x, 3.38x, 1.55x, and 2.66x.

A solution to Babai's problem on digraphs with non-diagonalizable adjacency matrix

The fact that the adjacency matrix of every finite graph is diagonalizable plays a fundamental role in spectral graph theory. Since this fact does not hold in general for digraphs, it is natural to ask whether it holds for digraphs with certain level of symmetry. Interest on this question dates back to early 1980s, when P.~J.~Cameron asked for the existence of arc-transitive digraphs with non-diagonalizable adjacency matrix. This was answered in the affirmative by L.~Babai in 1985. Then Babai posed the open problem of constructing a 2-arc-transitive digraph and a vertex-primitive digraph whose adjacency matrices are not diagonalizable. In this paper, we solve Babai's problem by constructing an infinite family of $s$-arc-transitive digraphs for each integer $s\geq2$, and an infinite family of vertex-primitive digraphs, respectively, both of whose adjacency matrices are non-diagonalizable.

O2ATH: An OpenMP Offloading Toolkit for the Sunway Heterogeneous Manycore Platform

The next generation Sunway supercomputer employs the SW26010pro processor, which features a specialized on-chip heterogeneous architecture. Applications with significant hotspots can benefit from the great computation capacity improvement of Sunway many-core architectures by carefully making intensive manual many-core parallelization efforts. However, some legacy projects with large codebases, such as CESM, ROMS and WRF, contain numerous lines of code and do not have significant hotspots. The cost of manually porting such applications to the Sunway architecture is almost unaffordable. To overcome such a challenge, we have developed a toolkit named O2ATH. O2ATH forwards GNU OpenMP runtime library calls to Sunway's Athread library, which greatly simplifies the parallelization work on the Sunway architecture.O2ATH enables users to write both MPE and CPE code in a single file, and parallelization can be achieved by utilizing OpenMP directives and attributes. In practice, O2ATH has helped us to port two large projects, CESM and ROMS, to the CPEs of the next generation Sunway supercomputers via the OpenMP offload method. In the experiments, kernel speedups range from 3 to 15 times, resulting in 3 to 6 times whole application speedups.Furthermore, O2ATH requires significantly fewer code modifications compared to manually crafting CPE functions. This indicates that O2ATH can greatly enhance development efficiency when porting or optimizing large software projects on Sunway supercomputers.

Gaussian Boson Sampling with Pseudo-Photon-Number Resolving Detectors and Quantum Computational Advantage

We report new Gaussian boson sampling experiments with pseudo-photon-number-resolving detection, which register up to 255 photon-click events. We consider partial photon distinguishability and develop a more complete model for the characterization of the noisy Gaussian boson sampling. In the quantum computational advantage regime, we use Bayesian tests and correlation function analysis to validate the samples against all current classical mockups. Estimating with the best classical algorithms to date, generating a single ideal sample from the same distribution on the supercomputer Frontier would take ~ 600 years using exact methods, whereas our quantum computer, Jiuzhang 3.0, takes only 1.27 us to produce a sample. Generating the hardest sample from the experiment using an exact algorithm would take Frontier ~ 3.1*10^10 years.

Unified Statistical Channel Modeling and performance analysis of Vertical Underwater Wireless Optical Communication Links considering Turbulence-Induced Fading

The reliability of a vertical underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) network is seriously impacted by turbulence-induced fading due to fluctuations in the water temperature and salinity, which vary with depth. To better assess the vertical UWOC system performances, an accurate probability distribution function (PDF) model that can describe this fading is indispensable. In view of the limitations of theoretical and experimental studies, this paper is the first to establish a more accurate modeling scheme for wave optics simulation (WOS) by fully considering the constraints of sampling conditions on multi-phase screen parameters. On this basis, we complete the modeling of light propagation in a vertical oceanic turbulence channel and subsequently propose a unified statistical model named mixture Weibull-generalized Gamma (WGG) distribution model to characterize turbulence-induced fading in vertical links. Interestingly, the WGG model is shown to provide a perfect fit with the acquired data under all considered channel conditions. We further show that the application of the WGG model leads to closed-form and analytically tractable expressions for key UWOC system performance metrics such as the average bit-error rate (BER). The presented results give valuable insight into the practical aspects of development of UWOC networks.

Knowledge Distillation-based Information Sharing for Online Process Monitoring in Decentralized Manufacturing System

In advanced manufacturing, the incorporation of sensing technology provides an opportunity to achieve efficient in-situ process monitoring using machine learning methods. Meanwhile, the advances of information technologies also enable a connected and decentralized environment for manufacturing systems, making different manufacturing units in the system collaborate more closely. In a decentralized manufacturing system, the involved units may fabricate same or similar products and deploy their own machine learning model for online process monitoring. However, due to the possible inconsistency of task progress during the operation, it is also common that some units have more informative data while some have less informative data. Thus, the monitoring performance of machine learning model for each unit may highly vary. Therefore, it is extremely valuable to achieve efficient and secured knowledge sharing among the units in a decentralized manufacturing system for enhancement of poorly performed models. To realize this goal, this paper proposes a novel knowledge distillation-based information sharing (KD-IS) framework, which could distill informative knowledge from well performed models to improve the monitoring performance of poorly performed models. To validate the effectiveness of this method, a real-world case study is conducted in a connected fused filament fabrication (FFF)-based additive manufacturing (AM) platform. The experimental results show that the developed method is very efficient in improving model monitoring performance at poorly performed models, with solid protection on potential data privacy.

The prescribed Gauduchon scalar curvature problem in almost Hermitian geometry

In this paper we consider the prescribed Gauduchon scalar curvature problem on almost Hermitian manifolds. By deducing the expression of the Gauduchon scalar curvature under the conformal variation, the problem is reduced to solve a semi-linear partial differential equation with exponential nonlinearity. Using super and sub-solution method, we show that the existence of the solution to this semi-linear equation depends on the sign of a constant associated to Gauduchon degree. When the sign is negative, we give both necessary and sufficient conditions that a prescribed function is the Gauduchon scalar curvature of a conformal Hermitian metric. Besides, this paper recovers Chern Yamabe problem, prescribed Chern Yamabe problem and Bismut Yamabe problem.

Is Synthetic Data From Diffusion Models Ready for Knowledge Distillation?

Diffusion models have recently achieved astonishing performance in generating high-fidelity photo-realistic images. Given their huge success, it is still unclear whether synthetic images are applicable for knowledge distillation when real images are unavailable. In this paper, we extensively study whether and how synthetic images produced from state-of-the-art diffusion models can be used for knowledge distillation without access to real images, and obtain three key conclusions: (1) synthetic data from diffusion models can easily lead to state-of-the-art performance among existing synthesis-based distillation methods, (2) low-fidelity synthetic images are better teaching materials, and (3) relatively weak classifiers are better teachers. Genetic Analysis of Prostate Cancer with Computer Science Methods

Metastatic prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. In the advanced stages of prostate cancer, tumours can metastasise to other tissues in the body, which is fatal. In this thesis, we performed a genetic analysis of prostate cancer tumours at different metastatic sites using data science, machine learning and topological network analysis methods. We presented a general procedure for pre-processing gene expression datasets and pre-filtering significant genes by analytical methods. We then used machine learning models for further key gene filtering and secondary site tumour classification. Finally, we performed gene co-expression network analysis and community detection on samples from different prostate cancer secondary site types. In this work, 13 of the 14,379 genes were selected as the most metastatic prostate cancer related genes, achieving approximately 92% accuracy under cross-validation. In addition, we provide preliminary insights into the co-expression patterns of genes in gene co-expression networks. Project code is available at https://github.com/zcablii/Master_cancer_project.

Large Selective Kernel Network for Remote Sensing Object Detection

Recent research on remote sensing object detection has largely focused on improving the representation of oriented bounding boxes but has overlooked the unique prior knowledge presented in remote sensing scenarios. Such prior knowledge can be useful because tiny remote sensing objects may be mistakenly detected without referencing a sufficiently long-range context, and the long-range context required by different types of objects can vary. In this paper, we take these priors into account and propose the Large Selective Kernel Network (LSKNet). LSKNet can dynamically adjust its large spatial receptive field to better model the ranging context of various objects in remote sensing scenarios. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that large and selective kernel mechanisms have been explored in the field of remote sensing object detection. Without bells and whistles, LSKNet sets new state-of-the-art scores on standard benchmarks, i.e., HRSC2016 (98.46\% mAP), DOTA-v1.0 (81.85\% mAP) and FAIR1M-v1.0 (47.87\% mAP). Based on a similar technique, we rank 2nd place in 2022 the Greater Bay Area International Algorithm Competition. Code is available at https://github.com/zcablii/Large-Selective-Kernel-Network.

The second largest eigenvalue of normal Cayley graphs on symmetric groups generated by cycles

We study the normal Cayley graphs $\mathrm{Cay}(S_n, C(n,I))$ on the symmetric group $S_n$, where $I\subseteq \{2,3,\ldots,n\}$ and $C(n,I)$ is the set of all cycles in $S_n$ with length in $I$. We prove that the strictly second largest eigenvalue of $\mathrm{Cay}(S_n,C(n,I))$ can only be achieved by at most four irreducible representations of $S_n$, and we determine further the multiplicity of this eigenvalue in several special cases. As a corollary, in the case when $I$ contains neither $n-1$ nor $n$ we know exactly when $\mathrm{Cay}(S_n, C(n,I))$ has the Aldous property, namely the strictly second largest eigenvalue is attained by the standard representation of $S_n$, and we obtain that $\mathrm{Cay}(S_n, C(n,I))$ does not have the Aldous property whenever $n \in I$. As another corollary of our main results, we prove a recent conjecture on the second largest eigenvalue of $\mathrm{Cay}(S_n, C(n,\{k\}))$ where $2 \le k \le n-2$.

Aldous' spectral gap property for normal Cayley graphs on symmetric groups

Aldous' spectral gap conjecture states that the second largest eigenvalue of any connected Cayley graph on the symmetric group Sn with respect to a set of transpositions is achieved by the standard representation of Sn. This celebrated conjecture, which was proved in its general form in 2010, has inspired much interest in searching for other families of Cayley graphs on Sn with the property that the largest eigenvalue strictly smaller than the degree is attained by the standard representation of Sn. In this paper, we prove three results on normal Cayley graphs on Sn possessing this property for sufficiently large n, one of which can be viewed as a generalization of the "normal" case of Aldous' spectral gap conjecture.

Systematic Generalization and Emergent Structures in Transformers Trained on Structured Tasks

Transformer networks have seen great success in natural language processing and machine vision, where task objectives such as next word prediction and image classification benefit from nuanced context sensitivity across high-dimensional inputs. However, there is an ongoing debate about how and when transformers can acquire highly structured behavior and achieve systematic generalization. Here, we explore how well a causal transformer can perform a set of algorithmic tasks, including copying, sorting, and hierarchical compositions of these operations. We demonstrate strong generalization to sequences longer than those used in training by replacing the standard positional encoding typically used in transformers with labels arbitrarily paired with items in the sequence. We search for the layer and head configuration sufficient to solve these tasks, then probe for signs of systematic processing in latent representations and attention patterns. We show that two-layer transformers learn reliable solutions to multi-level problems, develop signs of task decomposition, and encode input items in a way that encourages the exploitation of shared computation across related tasks. These results provide key insights into how attention layers support structured computation both within a task and across multiple tasks.

Multimodal Remote Sensing Image Registration Based on Adaptive Multi-scale PIIFD

In recent years, due to the wide application of multi-sensor vision systems, multimodal image acquisition technology has continued to develop, and the registration problem based on multimodal images has gradually emerged. Most of the existing multimodal image registration methods are only suitable for two modalities, and cannot uniformly register multiple modal image data. Therefore, this paper proposes a multimodal remote sensing image registration method based on adaptive multi-scale PIIFD(AM-PIIFD). This method extracts KAZE features, which can effectively retain edge feature information while filtering noise. Then adaptive multi-scale PIIFD is calculated for matching. Finally, the mismatch is removed through the consistency of the feature main direction, and the image alignment transformation is realized. The qualitative and quantitative comparisons with other three advanced methods shows that our method can achieve excellent performance in multimodal remote sensing image registration.

Pseudo-Model-Free Hedging for Variable Annuities via Deep Reinforcement Learning

This paper proposes a two-phase deep reinforcement learning approach, for hedging variable annuity contracts with both GMMB and GMDB riders, which can address model miscalibration in Black-Scholes financial and constant force of mortality actuarial market environments. In the training phase, an infant reinforcement learning agent interacts with a pre-designed training environment, collects sequential anchor-hedging reward signals, and gradually learns how to hedge the contracts. As expected, after a sufficient number of training steps, the trained reinforcement learning agent hedges, in the training environment, equally well as the correct Delta while outperforms misspecified Deltas. In the online learning phase, the trained reinforcement learning agent interacts with the market environment in real time, collects single terminal reward signals, and self-revises its hedging strategy. The hedging performance of the further trained reinforcement learning agent is demonstrated via an illustrative example on a rolling basis to reveal the self-revision capability on the hedging strategy by online learning.

Excitonic Bloch-Siegert shift in CsPbI3 perovskite quantum dots

Coherent interaction between matter and periodic light field induces both optical Stark effect (OSE) and Bloch-Siegert shift (BSS). Observing the BSS has been historically challenging, not only because it is weak but it is often accompanied by a much stronger OSE. Herein, by controlling the light helicity, we can largely restrict the OSE and BSS to different spin-transitions in CsPbI3 perovskite quantum dots, achieving room-temperature BSS as strong as 4 meV with near-infrared pulses. The ratio between the BSS and OSE magnitudes is however systematically higher than the prediction by the non-interacting, quasi-particle picture. With a model that explicitly accounts for excitonic effects, we quantitatively reproduce the experimental observations. This model depicts a unified physical picture of the interplay between the OSE, biexcitonic OSE and BSS in low-dimensional materials displaying strong many-body interactions, forming the basis for the implementation of these effects to information processing, optical modulation and Floquet engineering.

A Generative Adversarial Network-based Selective Ensemble Characteristic-to-Expression Synthesis (SE-CTES) Approach and Its Applications in Healthcare

Investigating the causal relationships between characteristics and expressions plays a critical role in healthcare analytics. Effective synthesis for expressions using given characteristics can make great contributions to health risk management and medical decision-making. For example, predicting the resulting physiological symptoms on patients from given treatment characteristics is helpful for the disease prevention and personalized treatment strategy design. Therefore, the objective of this study is to effectively synthesize the expressions based on given characteristics. However, the mapping from characteristics to expressions is usually from a relatively low dimension space to a high dimension space, but most of the existing methods such as regression models could not effectively handle such mapping. Besides, the relationship between characteristics and expressions may contain not only deterministic patterns, but also stochastic patterns. To address these challenges, this paper proposed a novel selective ensemble characteristic-to-expression synthesis (SE-CTES) approach inspired by generative adversarial network (GAN). The novelty of the proposed method can be summarized into three aspects: (1) GAN-based architecture for deep neural networks are incorporated to learn the relatively low dimensional mapping to high dimensional mapping containing both deterministic and stochastic patterns; (2) the weights of the two mismatching errors in the GAN-based architecture are proposed to be different to reduce the learning bias in the training process; and (3) a selective ensemble learning framework is proposed to reduce the prediction bias and improve the synthesis stability. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, extensive numerical simulation studies and a real-world healthcare case study were applied and the results demonstrated that the proposed method is very promising.
