A semilinear partial differential equation induced by Hermitian Yang-Mills metrics

This paper will discuss a class of semilinear partial differential equations induced by studying the limiting behaviour of Hermitian Yang-Mills metrics. We will study the radial symmetry of the $C^{2}$ global solution of this equation in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ and the existence of $C^{2,α}$ solution of the Dirichlet boundary value problem in any bounded domain.

UID2021: An Underwater Image Dataset for Evaluation of No-reference Quality Assessment Metrics

Achieving subjective and objective quality assessment of underwater images is of high significance in underwater visual perception and image/video processing. However, the development of underwater image quality assessment (UIQA) is limited for the lack of comprehensive human subjective user study with publicly available dataset and reliable objective UIQA metric. To address this issue, we establish a large-scale underwater image dataset, dubbed UID2021, for evaluating no-reference UIQA metrics. The constructed dataset contains 60 multiply degraded underwater images collected from various sources, covering six common underwater scenes (i.e. bluish scene, bluish-green scene, greenish scene, hazy scene, low-light scene, and turbid scene), and their corresponding 900 quality improved versions generated by employing fifteen state-of-the-art underwater image enhancement and restoration algorithms. Mean opinion scores (MOS) for UID2021 are also obtained by using the pair comparison sorting method with 52 observers. Both in-air NR-IQA and underwater-specific algorithms are tested on our constructed dataset to fairly compare the performance and analyze their strengths and weaknesses. Our proposed UID2021 dataset enables ones to evaluate NR UIQA algorithms comprehensively and paves the way for further research on UIQA. Our UID2021 will be a free download and utilized for research purposes at: https://github.com/Hou-Guojia/UID2021.

Phase-Programmable Gaussian Boson Sampling Using Stimulated Squeezed Light

The tantalizing promise of quantum computational speedup in solving certain problems has been strongly supported by recent experimental evidence from a high-fidelity 53-qubit superconducting processor1 and Gaussian boson sampling (GBS) with up to 76 detected photons. Analogous to the increasingly sophisticated Bell tests that continued to refute local hidden variable theories, quantum computational advantage tests are expected to provide increasingly compelling experimental evidence against the Extended Church-Turing thesis. In this direction, continued competition between upgraded quantum hardware and improved classical simulations is required. Here, we report a new GBS experiment that produces up to 113 detection events out of a 144-mode photonic circuit. We develop a new high-brightness and scalable quantum light source, exploring the idea of stimulated squeezed photons, which has simultaneously near-unity purity and efficiency. This GBS is programmable by tuning the phase of the input squeezed states. We demonstrate a new method to efficiently validate the samples by inferring from computationally friendly subsystems, which rules out hypotheses including distinguishable photons and thermal states. We show that our noisy GBS experiment passes the nonclassicality test using an inequality, and we reveal non-trivial genuine high-order correlation in the GBS samples, which are evidence of robustness against possible classical simulation schemes. The photonic quantum computer, Jiuzhang 2.0, yields a Hilbert space dimension up to $10^{43}$, and a sampling rate $10^{24}$ faster than using brute-force simulation on supercomputers.

Three Steps to Multimodal Trajectory Prediction: Modality Clustering, Classification and Synthesis

Multimodal prediction results are essential for trajectory prediction task as there is no single correct answer for the future. Previous frameworks can be divided into three categories: regression, generation and classification frameworks. However, these frameworks have weaknesses in different aspects so that they cannot model the multimodal prediction task comprehensively. In this paper, we present a novel insight along with a brand-new prediction framework by formulating multimodal prediction into three steps: modality clustering, classification and synthesis, and address the shortcomings of earlier frameworks. Exhaustive experiments on popular benchmarks have demonstrated that our proposed method surpasses state-of-the-art works even without introducing social and map information. Specifically, we achieve 19.2% and 20.8% improvement on ADE and FDE respectively on ETH/UCY dataset. Our code will be made publicly availabe.

Quantum computational advantage using photons

Gaussian boson sampling exploits squeezed states to provide a highly efficient way to demonstrate quantum computational advantage. We perform experiments with 50 input single-mode squeezed states with high indistinguishability and squeezing parameters, which are fed into a 100-mode ultralow-loss interferometer with full connectivity and random transformation, and sampled using 100 high-efficiency single-photon detectors. The whole optical set-up is phase-locked to maintain a high coherence between the superposition of all photon number states. We observe up to 76 output photon-clicks, which yield an output state space dimension of $10^{30}$ and a sampling rate that is $10^{14}$ faster than using the state-of-the-art simulation strategy and supercomputers. The obtained samples are validated against various hypotheses including using thermal states, distinguishable photons, and uniform distribution.

NEARL: Non-Explicit Action Reinforcement Learning for Robotic Control

Traditionally, reinforcement learning methods predict the next action based on the current state. However, in many situations, directly applying actions to control systems or robots is dangerous and may lead to unexpected behaviors because action is rather low-level. In this paper, we propose a novel hierarchical reinforcement learning framework without explicit action. Our meta policy tries to manipulate the next optimal state and actual action is produced by the inverse dynamics model. To stabilize the training process, we integrate adversarial learning and information bottleneck into our framework. Under our framework, widely available state-only demonstrations can be exploited effectively for imitation learning. Also, prior knowledge and constraints can be applied to meta policy. We test our algorithm in simulation tasks and its combination with imitation learning. The experimental results show the reliability and robustness of our algorithms.

Benchmarking 50-Photon Gaussian Boson Sampling on the Sunway TaihuLight

Boson sampling is expected to be one of an important milestones that will demonstrate quantum supremacy. The present work establishes the benchmarking of Gaussian boson sampling (GBS) with threshold detection based on the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer. To achieve the best performance and provide a competitive scenario for future quantum computing studies, the selected simulation algorithm is fully optimized based on a set of innovative approaches, including a parallel scheme and instruction-level optimizing method. Furthermore, data precision and instruction scheduling are handled in a sophisticated manner by an adaptive precision optimization scheme and a DAG-based heuristic search algorithm, respectively. Based on these methods, a highly efficient and parallel quantum sampling algorithm is designed. The largest run enables us to obtain one Torontonian function of a 100 x 100 submatrix from 50-photon GBS within 20 hours in 128-bit precision and 2 days in 256-bit precision.

X-UDS: The Chandra Legacy Survey of the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey Field

We present the X-UDS survey, a set of wide and deep Chandra observations of the Subaru-XMM Deep/UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (SXDS/UDS) field. The survey consists of 25 observations that cover a total area of 0.33 deg$^{2}$. The observations are combined to provide a nominal depth of ~600 ksec in the central 100 arcmin$^{2}$ region of the field that has been imaged with Hubble/WFC3 by the CANDELS survey and $\sim$200 ksec in the remainder of the field. In this paper, we outline the survey's scientific goals, describe our observing strategy, and detail our data reduction and point source detection algorithms. Our analysis has resulted in a total of 868 band-merged point sources detected with a false-positive Poisson probability of $<1\times10^{-4}$. In addition, we present the results of an X-ray spectral analysis and provide best-fitting neutral hydrogen column densities, $N_{\rm H}$, as well as a sample of 51 Compton-thick active galactic nucleus candidates. Using this sample, we find the intrinsic Compton-thick fraction to be 30-35% over a wide range in redshift ($z=0.1-3$), suggesting the obscured fraction does not evolve very strongly with epoch. However, if we assume that the Compton-thick fraction is dependent on luminosity, as is seen for Compton-thin sources, then our results are consistent with a rise in the obscured fraction out to $z\sim3$. Finally, an examination of the host morphologies of our Compton-thick candidates shows a high fraction of morphological disturbances, in agreement with our previous results. All data products described in this paper are made available via a public website.
