Incorporating Sememes into Chinese Definition Modeling

Chinese definition modeling is a challenging task that generates a dictionary definition in Chinese for a given Chinese word. To accomplish this task, we construct the Chinese Definition Modeling Corpus (CDM), which contains triples of word, sememes and the corresponding definition. We present two novel models to improve Chinese definition modeling: the Adaptive-Attention model (AAM) and the Self- and Adaptive-Attention Model (SAAM). AAM successfully incorporates sememes for generating the definition with an adaptive attention mechanism. It has the capability to decide which sememes to focus on and when to pay attention to sememes. SAAM further replaces recurrent connections in AAM with self-attention and relies entirely on the attention mechanism, reducing the path length between word, sememes and definition. Experiments on CDM demonstrate that by incorporating sememes, our best proposed model can outperform the state-of-the-art method by +6.0 BLEU.

Spatial Lobes Division Based Low Complexity Hybrid Precoding and Diversity Combining for mmWave IoT Systems

This paper focuses on the design of low complexity hybrid analog/digital precoding and diversity combining in millimeter wave (mmWave) Internet of things (IoT) systems. Firstly, by exploiting the sparseness property of the mmWave in the angular domain, we propose a spatial lobes division (SLD) to group the total paths of the mmWave channel into several spatial lobes, where the paths in each spatial lobe form a low-rank sub-channel. Secondly, based on the SLD operation, we propose a low complexity hybrid precoding scheme, named HYP-SLD. Specifically, for each low-rank sub-channel, we formulate the hybrid precoding design as a sparse reconstruction problem and separately maximizes the spectral efficiency. Finally, we further propose a maximum ratio combining based diversity combining scheme, named HYP-SLD-MRC, to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of mmWave IoT systems. Simulation results demonstrate that, the proposed HYP-SLD scheme significantly reduces the complexity of the classic orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) scheme. Moreover, the proposed HYP-SLD-MRC scheme achieves great improvement in BER performance compared with the fully digital precoding scheme.

A Stable and Effective Learning Strategy for Trainable Greedy Decoding

Beam search is a widely used approximate search strategy for neural network decoders, and it generally outperforms simple greedy decoding on tasks like machine translation. However, this improvement comes at substantial computational cost. In this paper, we propose a flexible new method that allows us to reap nearly the full benefits of beam search with nearly no additional computational cost. The method revolves around a small neural network actor that is trained to observe and manipulate the hidden state of a previously-trained decoder. To train this actor network, we introduce the use of a pseudo-parallel corpus built using the output of beam search on a base model, ranked by a target quality metric like BLEU. Our method is inspired by earlier work on this problem, but requires no reinforcement learning, and can be trained reliably on a range of models. Experiments on three parallel corpora and three architectures show that the method yields substantial improvements in translation quality and speed over each base system.

Meta-Learning for Low-Resource Neural Machine Translation

In this paper, we propose to extend the recently introduced model-agnostic meta-learning algorithm (MAML) for low-resource neural machine translation (NMT). We frame low-resource translation as a meta-learning problem, and we learn to adapt to low-resource languages based on multilingual high-resource language tasks. We use the universal lexical representation~\citep{gu2018universal} to overcome the input-output mismatch across different languages. We evaluate the proposed meta-learning strategy using eighteen European languages (Bg, Cs, Da, De, El, Es, Et, Fr, Hu, It, Lt, Nl, Pl, Pt, Sk, Sl, Sv and Ru) as source tasks and five diverse languages (Ro, Lv, Fi, Tr and Ko) as target tasks. We show that the proposed approach significantly outperforms the multilingual, transfer learning based approach~\citep{zoph2016transfer} and enables us to train a competitive NMT system with only a fraction of training examples. For instance, the proposed approach can achieve as high as 22.04 BLEU on Romanian-English WMT'16 by seeing only 16,000 translated words (~600 parallel sentences).

Hybrid Precoding Based on Non-Uniform Quantization Codebook to Reduce Feedback Overhead in Millimeter Wave MIMO Systems

In this paper, we focus on the design of the hybrid analog/digital precoding in millimeter wave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To reduce the feedback overhead, we propose two non-uniform quantization (NUQ) codebook based hybrid precoding schemes for two main hybrid precoding implementations, i.e., the full-connected structure and the sub-connected structure. Specifically, we firstly group the angles of the arrive/departure (AOAs/AODs) of the scattering paths into several spatial lobes by exploiting the sparseness property of the millimeter wave in the angular domain, which divides the total angular domain into effective spatial lobes' coverage angles and ineffective coverage angles. Then, we map the quantization bits non-uniformly to different coverage angles and construct NUQ codebooks, where high numbers of quantization bits are employed for the effective coverage angles to quantize AoAs/AoDs and zero quantization bit is employed for ineffective coverage angles. Finally, two low-complexity hybrid analog/digital precoding schemes are proposed based on NUQ codebooks. Simulation results demonstrate that, the proposed two NUQ codebook based hybrid precoding schemes achieve near-optimal spectral efficiencies and show the superiority in reducing the feedback overhead compared with the uniform quantization (UQ) codebook based works, e.g., at least 12.5% feedback overhead could be reduced for a system with 144/36 transmitting/receiving antennas.

Zero-Resource Neural Machine Translation with Multi-Agent Communication Game

While end-to-end neural machine translation (NMT) has achieved notable success in the past years in translating a handful of resource-rich language pairs, it still suffers from the data scarcity problem for low-resource language pairs and domains. To tackle this problem, we propose an interactive multimodal framework for zero-resource neural machine translation. Instead of being passively exposed to large amounts of parallel corpora, our learners (implemented as encoder-decoder architecture) engage in cooperative image description games, and thus develop their own image captioning or neural machine translation model from the need to communicate in order to succeed at the game. Experimental results on the IAPR-TC12 and Multi30K datasets show that the proposed learning mechanism significantly improves over the state-of-the-art methods.

Ultra-compact structure in intermediate-luminosity radio quasars: building a sample of standard cosmological rulers and improving the dark energy constraints up to $z\sim 3$

In this paper, we present a new compiled milliarcsecond compact radio data set of 120 intermediate-luminosity quasars in the redshift range $0.46< z <2.76$. These quasars show negligible dependence on redshifts and intrinsic luminosity, and thus represents, in the standard model of cosmology, a fixed comoving-length of standard ruler. We implement a new cosmology-independent technique to calibrate the linear size of of this standard ruler as $l_m= 11.03\pm0.25$ pc, which is the typical radius at which AGN jets become opaque at the observed frequency $ν\sim 2$ GHz. In the framework of flat $Λ$CDM model, we find a high value of the matter density parameter, $Ω_m=0.322^{+0.244}_{-0.141}$, and a low value of the Hubble constant, $H_0=67.6^{+7.8}_{-7.4}\; \rm{kms}^{-1}\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$, which is in excellent agreement with the CMB anisotropy measurements by \textit{Planck}. We obtain ${Ω_m}=0.309^{+0.215}_{-0.151}$, $w=-0.970^{+0.500}_{-1.730}$ at 68.3% CL for the constant $w$ of a dynamical dark-energy model, which demonstrates no significant deviation from the concordance $Λ$CDM model. Consistent fitting results are also obtained for other cosmological models explaining the cosmic acceleration, like Ricci dark energy (RDE) or Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) brane-world scenario. While no significant change in $w$ with redshift is detected, there is still considerable room for evolution in $w$ and the transition redshift at which $w$ departing from -1 is located at $z\sim 2.0$. Our results demonstrate that the method extensively investigated in our work on observational radio quasar data can be used to effectively derive cosmological information. Finally, we find the combination of high-redshift quasars and low-redshift clusters may provide an important source of angular diameter distances, considering the redshift coverage of these two astrophysical probes.

A Teacher-Student Framework for Zero-Resource Neural Machine Translation

While end-to-end neural machine translation (NMT) has made remarkable progress recently, it still suffers from the data scarcity problem for low-resource language pairs and domains. In this paper, we propose a method for zero-resource NMT by assuming that parallel sentences have close probabilities of generating a sentence in a third language. Based on this assumption, our method is able to train a source-to-target NMT model ("student") without parallel corpora available, guided by an existing pivot-to-target NMT model ("teacher") on a source-pivot parallel corpus. Experimental results show that the proposed method significantly improves over a baseline pivot-based model by +3.0 BLEU points across various language pairs.

Determining the Hubble constant from Hubble parameter measurements

We use 28 Hubble parameter, $H(z)$, measurements at intermediate redshifts $0.07 \leq z \leq 2.3$ to determine the present-day Hubble constant $H_0$ in four cosmological models. We measure $H_0 = 68.3^{ +2.7}_{ -2.6 }, 68.4^{ +2.9 }_{ -3.3 }, 65.0^{ +6.5 }_{ -6.6 }$ and $ 67.9^{ +2.4}_{-2.4}$ km s${}^{-1}$ Mpc${}^{-1}$ (1$σ$ errors) in the $Λ$CDM (spatially flat and non-flat), $ω$CDM and $ϕ$CDM models, respectively. These measured $H_0$ values are more consistent with the lower values determined from recent cosmic microwave background and baryon acoustic oscillation data, as well as with that found from a median statistics analysis of Huchra's compilation of $H_0$ measurements, but include the higher local measurements of $H_0$ within the 2$σ$ confidence limits.

Shock responses of nanoporous aluminum by molecular dynamics simulations

We present systematic investigations on the shock responses of nanoporous aluminum (np-Al) by nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The dislocation nucleation sites are found to concentrate in low latitude region near the equator of the spherical void surfaces. We propose a continuum wave reflection theory and a resolved shear stress model to explain the distribution of dislocation nucleation sites. The simulations reveals two mechanisms of void collapse: the plasticity mechanism and the internal jetting mechanism. The plasticity mechanism, which leads to transverse collapse of voids, prevails under relatively weaker shocks; while the internal jetting mechanism, which leads to longitudinal filling of the void vacuum, plays more significant role as the shock intensity increases. In addition, an abnormal thermodynamic phenomenon (i.e., arising of temperature with pressure dropping) in shocked np-Al is discovered. This phenomenon is incompatible with the conventional Rankine-Hugoniot theory, and is explained by the nonequilibrium processes involved in void collapse. The influences of void collapse on spall fracture of np-Al is studied. Under the same loading velocity, the spall strength of np-Al is found to be lower than that of single-crystal Al; but the spall resistance is higher in np-Al than in single-crystal Al. This is explained by the combined influences of thermal dissipation and stress attenuation during shock wave propagation in np-Al.

Constraints on non-flat cosmologies with massive neutrinos after Planck 2015

We investigate two dark energy cosmological models (i.e., the $Λ$CDM and $ϕ$CDM models) with massive neutrinos assuming two different neutrino mass hierarchies in both the spatially flat and non-flat scenarios, where in the $ϕ$CDM model the scalar field possesses an inverse power-law potential, $V(ϕ)\propto ϕ^{-α}$ ($α>0$). Cosmic microwave background data from Planck 2015, baryon acoustic oscillations data from 6dFGS, SDSS-MGS, BOSS-LOWZ and BOSS CMASS-DR11, the JLA compilation of Type Ia supernova apparent magnitude observations, and the Hubble Space Telescope $H_0$ prior, are jointly employed to constrain the model parameters. We first determine constraints assuming three species of degenerate massive neutrinos. In the spatially flat (non-flat) $Λ$CDM model, the sum of neutrino masses is bounded as $Σm_ν < 0.165 (0.299)$ eV at 95% confidence level (CL). Correspondingly, in the flat (non-flat) $ϕ$CDM model, we find $Σm_ν < 0.164 (0.301)$ eV at 95% CL. The inclusion of spatial curvature as a free parameter results in a significant broadening of confidence regions for $Σm_ν$ and other parameters. In the scenario where the total neutrino mass is dominated by the heaviest neutrino mass eigenstate, we can obtain the similar conclusions as those obtained in the degenerate neutrino mass scenario. In addition, the results show that the bounds on $Σm_ν$ based on two different neutrino mass hierarchies have insignificant differences in the spatially flat case for both the $Λ$CDM and $ϕ$CDM models, however, the corresponding differences are larger in the non-flat case.

Galaxy clustering, CMB and supernova data constraints on $ϕ$CDM model with massive neutrinos

We investigate a scalar field dark energy model (i.e., $ϕ$CDM model) with massive neutrinos, where the scalar field possesses an inverse power-law potential, i.e., $V(ϕ)\propto ϕ^{-α}$ ($α>0$). We find that the sum of neutrino masses $Σm_ν$ has significant impacts on the CMB temperature power spectrum and on the matter power spectrum. In addition, the parameter $α$ also has slight impacts on the spectra. A joint sample, including CMB data from Planck 2013 and WMAP9, galaxy clustering data from WiggleZ and BOSS DR11, and JLA compilation of Type Ia supernova observations, is adopted to confine the parameters. Within the context of the $ϕ$CDM model under consideration, the joint sample determines the cosmological parameters to high precision. It turns out that $α<4.995$ at 95% CL for the $ϕ$CDM model. And yet, the $Λ$CDM scenario corresponding to $α= 0$ is not ruled out at 95% CL. Moreover, we get $Σm_ν< 0.262$ eV at 95% CL for the $ϕ$CDM model, while the corresponding one for the $Λ$CDM model is $Σm_ν < 0.293$ eV. The allowed scale of $Σm_ν$ in the $ϕ$CDM model is a bit smaller than that in the $Λ$CDM model. It is consistent with the qualitative analysis, which reveals that the increases of $α$ and $Σm_ν$ both can result in the suppression of the matter power spectrum. As a consequence, when $α$ is larger, in order to avoid suppressing the matter power spectrum too much, the value of $Σm_ν$ should be smaller.

Constraints on a $ϕ$CDM model from strong gravitational lensing and updated Hubble parameter measurements

We constrain the scalar field dark energy model with an inverse power-law potential, i.e., $V(ϕ)\propto ϕ^{-α}$ ($α>0$), from a set of recent cosmological observations by compiling an updated sample of Hubble parameter measurements including 30 independent data points. Our results show that the constraining power of the updated sample of $H(z)$ data with the HST prior on $H_0$ is stronger than those of the SCP Union2 and Union2.1 compilations. A recent sample of strong gravitational lensing systems is also adopted to confine the model even though the results are not significant. A joint analysis of the strong gravitational lensing data with the more restrictive updated Hubble parameter measurements and the Type Ia supernovae data from SCP Union2 indicates that the recent observations still can not distinguish whether dark energy is a time-independent cosmological constant or a time-varying dynamical component.

Constraints on the exponential $f(R)$ model from latest Hubble parameter measurements

We investigate the viable exponential $f(R)$ gravity in the metric formalism with $f(R)=-βR_s (1-e^{-R/R_s})$. The latest sample of the Hubble parameter measurements with 23 data points is used to place bounds on this $f(R)$ model. A joint analysis is also performed with the luminosity distances of Type Ia supernovae and baryon acoustic oscillations in the clustering of galaxies, and the shift parameters from the cosmic microwave background measurements, which leads to $0.240<Ω_m^0<0.296$ and $β>1.47$ at 1$σ$ confidence level. The evolutions of the deceleration parameter $q(z)$ and the effective equations of state $ω_{de}^{eff}(z)$ and $ω_{tot}^{eff}(z)$ are displayed. By taking the best-fit parameters as prior values, we work out the transition redshift (deceleration/acceleration) $z_T$ to be about 0.77. It turns out that the recent observations are still unable to distinguish the background dynamics in the $Λ$CDM and exponential $f(R)$ models.

How Channel Segregates Originates: The Flow of Accumulated Impurity Clusters in Solidifying Steels

The phenomenon, channel segregates (CS) as a result of gravity-driven flow due to density contrast occurred in the solid-liquid mushy zones1during solidification, often causes the severe destruction of homogeneity and even some fatal damages. Investigation on its mechanism sheds light on the understanding and controlling of the formation of solidifying metals, earth's core, igneous rock and sea ice. Until now, it still remains controversial what composes the density contrasts and, to what extent, how it affects channel segregates. Here, we show that in experimental 500kg and 100 ton commercial cast steel ingots CS originates from oxide Al2O3/MnS impurity clusters (OICs) initially nucleated from the oxide (Al2O3) particles, which induce an extra flow due to sharp density contrast between clusters and melt. The results uncover that, as OICs enrich and grow, their driven flow becomes stronger than the traditionally recognized inter-dendritic thermo-solutal convection, dominating the subsequent opening of the channels. This study extends the classical macrosegregation theory, highlights a significant technological breakthrough to control CS, and could quickly yield practical benefits to the worldwide manufacture of over 50 million tons of ingots, super-thick slab and heavy castings annually, as well as has general implications for the elaboration of other related natural phenomena.

Accurate Sampling Timing Acquisition for Baseband OFDM Power-line Communication in Non-Gaussian Noise

In this paper, a novel technique is proposed to address the joint sampling timing acquisition for baseband and broadband power-line communication (BB-PLC) systems using Orthogonal-Frequency-Division-Multiplexing (OFDM), including the sampling phase offset (SPO) and the sampling clock offset (SCO). Under pairwise correlation and joint Gaussian assumption of received signals in frequency domain, an approximated form of the log-likelihood function is derived. Instead of a high complexity two-dimension grid-search on the likelihood function, a five-step method is employed for accurate estimations. Several variants are presented in the same framework with different complexities. Unlike conventional pilot-assisted schemes using the extra phase rotations within one OFDM block, the proposed technique turns to the phase rotations between adjacent OFDM blocks. Analytical expressions of the variances and biases are derived. Extensive simulation results indicate significant performance improvements over conventional schemes. Additionally, effects of several noise models including non-Gaussianity, cyclo-stationarity, and temporal correlation are analyzed and simulated. Robustness of the proposed technique against violation of the joint Gaussian assumption is also verified by simulations.

Fine Residual Carrier Frequency and Sampling Frequency Estimation in Wireless OFDM Systems

This paper presents a novel algorithm for residual phase estimation in wireless OFDM systems, including the carrier frequency offset (CFO) and the sampling frequency offset (SFO). The subcarriers are partitioned into several regions which exhibit pairwise correlations. The phase increment between successive OFDM blocks is exploited which can be estimated by two estimators with different computational loads. Numerical results of estimation variance are presented. Simulations indicate performance improvement of the proposed technique over several conventional schemes in a multipath channel.

Hubble parameter data constraints on dark energy

We use Hubble parameter versus redshift data from Stern, et al(2010) and Gaztañaga, et al (2009) to place constraints on model parameters of constant and time-evolving dark energy cosmological models. These constraints are consistent with (through not as restrictive as) those derived from supernova Type Ia magnitude-redshift data. However, they are more restrictive than those derived from galaxy cluster angular diameter distance, and comparable with those from gamma-ray burst and lookback time data. A joint analysis of the Hubble parameter data with more restrictive baryon acoustic oscillation peak length scale and supernova Type Ia apparent magnitude data favors a spatially-flat cosmological model currently dominated by a time-independent cosmological constant but does not exclude time-varying dark energy.
