Multi-Task Multi-Sensor Fusion for 3D Object Detection

In this paper we propose to exploit multiple related tasks for accurate multi-sensor 3D object detection. Towards this goal we present an end-to-end learnable architecture that reasons about 2D and 3D object detection as well as ground estimation and depth completion. Our experiments show that all these tasks are complementary and help the network learn better representations by fusing information at various levels. Importantly, our approach leads the KITTI benchmark on 2D, 3D and BEV object detection, while being real time.

Learning Joint 2D-3D Representations for Depth Completion

In this paper, we tackle the problem of depth completion from RGBD data. Towards this goal, we design a simple yet effective neural network block that learns to extract joint 2D and 3D features. Specifically, the block consists of two domain-specific sub-networks that apply 2D convolution on image pixels and continuous convolution on 3D points, with their output features fused in image space. We build the depth completion network simply by stacking the proposed block, which has the advantage of learning hierarchical representations that are fully fused between 2D and 3D spaces at multiple levels. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on the challenging KITTI depth completion benchmark and show that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art.

Accurate Word Alignment Induction from Neural Machine Translation

Despite its original goal to jointly learn to align and translate, prior researches suggest that Transformer captures poor word alignments through its attention mechanism. In this paper, we show that attention weights DO capture accurate word alignments and propose two novel word alignment induction methods Shift-Att and Shift-AET. The main idea is to induce alignments at the step when the to-be-aligned target token is the decoder input rather than the decoder output as in previous work. Shift-Att is an interpretation method that induces alignments from the attention weights of Transformer and does not require parameter update or architecture change. Shift-AET extracts alignments from an additional alignment module which is tightly integrated into Transformer and trained in isolation with supervision from symmetrized Shift-Att alignments. Experiments on three publicly available datasets demonstrate that both methods perform better than their corresponding neural baselines and Shift-AET significantly outperforms GIZA++ by 1.4-4.8 AER points.

5G Air-to-Ground Network Design and Optimization: A Deep Learning Approach

Direct air-to-ground (A2G) communications leveraging the fifth-generation (5G) new radio (NR) can provide high-speed broadband in-flight connectivity to aircraft in the sky. A2G network deployment entails optimizing various design parameters such as inter-site distances, number of sectors per site, and the up-tilt angles of sector antennas. The system-level design guidelines in the existing work on A2G network are rather limited. In this paper, a novel deep learning-based framework is proposed for efficient design and optimization of a 5G A2G network. The devised architecture comprises two deep neural networks (DNNs): the first DNN is used for approximating the 5G A2G network behavior in terms of user throughput, and the second DNN is developed as a function optimizer to find the throughput-optimal deployment parameters including antenna up-tilt angles and inter-site distances. Simulation results are provided to validate the proposed model and reveal system-level design insights.

Toward Cross-Lingual Definition Generation for Language Learners

Generating dictionary definitions automatically can prove useful for language learners. However, it's still a challenging task of cross-lingual definition generation. In this work, we propose to generate definitions in English for words in various languages. To achieve this, we present a simple yet effective approach based on publicly available pretrained language models. In this approach, models can be directly applied to other languages after trained on the English dataset. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach on zero-shot definition generation. Experiments and manual analyses on newly constructed datasets show that our models have a strong cross-lingual transfer ability and can generate fluent English definitions for Chinese words. We further measure the lexical complexity of generated and reference definitions. The results show that the generated definitions are much simpler, which is more suitable for language learners.

Investigating the relationship between cosmic curvature and dark energy models with the latest supernova sample

We investigate the relationship between the cosmic curvature and the model of dark energy (hereafter DE) with the recent Type Ia supernovae (hereafter SNe Ia) data, i.e., the Pantheon sample including 1048 SNe Ia with $0.01 < z < 2.3$. We obtain the measurements of the dimensionless spatial curvature density today, i.e., $Ω_{k0} = -0.062^{+0.189}_{-0.169}, -0.004^{+0.228}_{-0.134}, 0.127^{+0.280}_{-0.276}$ and $0.422^{+0.213}_{-0.338}$ at 68\% confidence level (CL), respectively, in the scenarios of $Λ$CDM, $ϕ$CDM (i.e., scalar field dark energy), $ω$CDM and $ω_0ω_a$CDM models. In the scenario of $Λ$CDM model, a closed universe is preferred by the Pantheon sample, which is consistent with that from the Planck CMB spectra. However, the uncertainty of $Ω_{k0}$ from the Pantheon SNe sample is about 8 times larger than that from the Planck data, so the former one supports a closed universe at a much lower CL than that from the latter one. An open unverse is supported by the Pantheon sample at $\sim$32\% and $\sim$78\% CLs, respectively, in the $ω$CDM and $ω_0ω_a$CDM models. Among these models, the $ϕ$CDM model is the one which supports the flat universe most strongly. It shows that $Ω_{k0}$ is significantly dependent on the adopted model of dark energy, and there is a negative correlation between $Ω_{k0}$ and the equation of state of DE.

A General Framework for Adaptation of Neural Machine Translation to Simultaneous Translation

Despite the success of neural machine translation (NMT), simultaneous neural machine translation (SNMT), the task of translating in real time before a full sentence has been observed, remains challenging due to the syntactic structure difference and simultaneity requirements. In this paper, we propose a general framework for adapting neural machine translation to translate simultaneously. Our framework contains two parts: prefix translation that utilizes a consecutive NMT model to translate source prefixes and a stopping criterion that determines when to stop the prefix translation. Experiments on three translation corpora and two language pairs show the efficacy of the proposed framework on balancing the quality and latency in adapting NMT to perform simultaneous translation.

DSDNet: Deep Structured self-Driving Network

In this paper, we propose the Deep Structured self-Driving Network (DSDNet), which performs object detection, motion prediction, and motion planning with a single neural network. Towards this goal, we develop a deep structured energy based model which considers the interactions between actors and produces socially consistent multimodal future predictions. Furthermore, DSDNet explicitly exploits the predicted future distributions of actors to plan a safe maneuver by using a structured planning cost. Our sample-based formulation allows us to overcome the difficulty in probabilistic inference of continuous random variables. Experiments on a number of large-scale self driving datasets demonstrate that our model significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art.

Learning Lane Graph Representations for Motion Forecasting

We propose a motion forecasting model that exploits a novel structured map representation as well as actor-map interactions. Instead of encoding vectorized maps as raster images, we construct a lane graph from raw map data to explicitly preserve the map structure. To capture the complex topology and long range dependencies of the lane graph, we propose LaneGCN which extends graph convolutions with multiple adjacency matrices and along-lane dilation. To capture the complex interactions between actors and maps, we exploit a fusion network consisting of four types of interactions, actor-to-lane, lane-to-lane, lane-to-actor and actor-to-actor. Powered by LaneGCN and actor-map interactions, our model is able to predict accurate and realistic multi-modal trajectories. Our approach significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art on the large scale Argoverse motion forecasting benchmark.

PnPNet: End-to-End Perception and Prediction with Tracking in the Loop

We tackle the problem of joint perception and motion forecasting in the context of self-driving vehicles. Towards this goal we propose PnPNet, an end-to-end model that takes as input sequential sensor data, and outputs at each time step object tracks and their future trajectories. The key component is a novel tracking module that generates object tracks online from detections and exploits trajectory level features for motion forecasting. Specifically, the object tracks get updated at each time step by solving both the data association problem and the trajectory estimation problem. Importantly, the whole model is end-to-end trainable and benefits from joint optimization of all tasks. We validate PnPNet on two large-scale driving datasets, and show significant improvements over the state-of-the-art with better occlusion recovery and more accurate future prediction.

A Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach to Efficient Drone Mobility Support

The growing deployment of drones in a myriad of applications relies on seamless and reliable wireless connectivity for safe control and operation of drones. Cellular technology is a key enabler for providing essential wireless services to flying drones in the sky. Existing cellular networks targeting terrestrial usage can support the initial deployment of low-altitude drone users, but there are challenges such as mobility support. In this paper, we propose a novel handover framework for providing efficient mobility support and reliable wireless connectivity to drones served by a terrestrial cellular network. Using tools from deep reinforcement learning, we develop a deep Q-learning algorithm to dynamically optimize handover decisions to ensure robust connectivity for drone users. Simulation results show that the proposed framework significantly reduces the number of handovers at the expense of a small loss in signal strength relative to the baseline case where a drone always connect to a base station that provides the strongest received signal strength.

Dictionary-based Data Augmentation for Cross-Domain Neural Machine Translation

Existing data augmentation approaches for neural machine translation (NMT) have predominantly relied on back-translating in-domain (IND) monolingual corpora. These methods suffer from issues associated with a domain information gap, which leads to translation errors for low frequency and out-of-vocabulary terminology. This paper proposes a dictionary-based data augmentation (DDA) method for cross-domain NMT. DDA synthesizes a domain-specific dictionary with general domain corpora to automatically generate a large-scale pseudo-IND parallel corpus. The generated pseudo-IND data can be used to enhance a general domain trained baseline. The experiments show that the DDA-enhanced NMT models demonstrate consistent significant improvements, outperforming the baseline models by 3.75-11.53 BLEU. The proposed method is also able to further improve the performance of the back-translation based and IND-finetuned NMT models. The improvement is associated with the enhanced domain coverage produced by DDA.

Bioinspired Materials with Self-Adaptable Mechanical Properties

Natural structural materials, such as bone and wood, can autonomously adapt their mechanical properties in response to loading to prevent failure. They smartly control the addition of material in locations of high stress by utilizing locally available resources guided by biological signals. On the contrary, synthetic structural materials have unchanging mechanical properties limiting their mechanical performance and service life. Here, a material system that autonomously adapts its mechanical properties in response to mechanical loading is reported inspired by the mineralization process of bone. It is observed that charges from piezoelectric scaffolds can induce mineralization from media with mineral ions. The material system adapts to mechanical loading by inducing mineral deposition in proportion to the magnitude of the loading and the resulting piezoelectric charges. Moreover, the mechanism allows a simple one-step route for making graded materials by controlling stress distribution along the scaffold. The findings can pave the way for a new class of self-adaptive materials that reinforce the region of high stress or induce deposition of minerals on the damaged areas from the increase in stress to prevent/mitigate failure. They can also contribute to addressing the current challenges of synthetic materials for load-bearing applications from self-adaptive capabilities.

Efficient Drone Mobility Support Using Reinforcement Learning

Flying drones can be used in a wide range of applications and services from surveillance to package delivery. To ensure robust control and safety of drone operations, cellular networks need to provide reliable wireless connectivity to drone user equipments (UEs). To date, existing mobile networks have been primarily designed and optimized for serving ground UEs, thus making the mobility support in the sky challenging. In this paper, a novel handover (HO) mechanism is developed for a cellular-connected drone system to ensure robust wireless connectivity and mobility support for drone-UEs. By leveraging tools from reinforcement learning, HO decisions are dynamically optimized using a Q-learning algorithm to provide an efficient mobility support in the sky. The results show that the proposed approach can significantly reduce (e.g., by 80%) the number of HOs, while maintaining connectivity, compared to the baseline HO scheme in which the drone always connects to the strongest cell.

Fitness Done Right: a Real-time Intelligent Personal Trainer for Exercise Correction

Keeping fit has been increasingly important for people nowadays. However, people may not get expected exercise results without following professional guidance while hiring personal trainers is expensive. In this paper, an effective real-time system called Fitness Done Right (FDR) is proposed for helping people exercise correctly on their own. The system includes detecting human body parts, recognizing exercise pose and detecting errors for test poses as well as giving correction advice. Generally, two branch multi-stage CNN is used for training data sets in order to learn human body parts and associations. Then, considering two poses, which are plank and squat in our model, we design a detection algorithm, combining Euclidean and angle distances, to determine the pose in the image. Finally, key values for key features of the two poses are computed correspondingly in the pose error detection part, which helps give correction advice. We conduct our system in real-time situation with error rate down to $1.2\%$, and the screenshots of experimental results are also presented.

Baryon acoustic oscillation, Hubble parameter, and angular size measurement constraints on the Hubble constant, dark energy dynamics, and spatial curvature

In this paper we use all available baryon acoustic oscillation, Hubble parameter, and quasar angular size data to constrain six dark energy cosmological models, both spatially flat and non-flat. Depending on the model and data combination considered, these data mildly favor closed spatial hypersurfaces (by as much as $1.7σ$) and dark energy dynamics (up to a little over $2σ$) over a cosmological constant $Λ$. The data also favor, at $1.8σ$ to $3.4σ$, depending on the model and data combination, a lower Hubble constant than what is measured from the local expansion rate.

Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO Systems Relying on Generalized Sub-Array-Connected Hybrid Precoding

In this paper, we consider a generalized sub-array-connected (GSAC) architecture for arbitrary radio frequency (RF) chain and antenna configurations, where the number of RF chains connected to a sub-array and the number of antennas in each sub-array can be arbitrary. Our design objective is to improve the energy-efficiency of the hybrid precoder of millimeter-wave massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. We firstly propose a successive interference cancellation based hybrid precoding algorithm to maximize the achievable rate for any given RF chain and antenna configuration. This algorithm firstly decomposes the total achievable rate optimization problem into multiple sub-rate optimization problems, then it successively maximizes these sub-rates. Since the number of RF chains is limited, we can afford using an exhaustive search scheme to evaluate all configurations and identify the one having the best energy efficiency. Moreover, to rely on an attractive limited feedback, we also propose a beamsteering codebook for our hybrid precoding aided GSAC architecture. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves a similar rate as the corresponding optimal unconstrained precoder. Furthermore, we show that the energy-efficiency of the proposed scheme is better than that of the existing schemes in the fully-connected and sub-array-connected architectures.

Assessing the effect of lens mass model in cosmological application with updated galaxy-scale strong gravitational lensing sample

By comparing the dynamical and lensing masses of early-type lens galaxies, one can constrain both the cosmological parameters and the density profiles of galaxies. We explore the constraining power on cosmological parameters and the effect of the lens mass model in this method with 161 galaxy-scale strong lensing systems, which is currently the largest sample with both high resolution imaging and stellar dynamical data. We assume a power-law mass model for the lenses, and consider three different parameterizations for $γ$ (i.e., the slope of the total mass density profile) to include the effect of the dependence of $γ$ on redshift and surface mass density. When treating $δ$ (i.e., the slope of the luminosity density profile) as a universal parameter for all lens galaxies, we find the limits on the cosmological parameter $Ω_m$ are quite weak and biased, and also heavily dependent on the lens mass model in the scenarios of parameterizing $γ$ with three different forms. When treating $δ$ as an observable for each lens, the unbiased estimate of $Ω_m$ can be obtained only in the scenario of including the dependence of $γ$ on both the redshift and the surface mass density, that is $Ω_m = 0.381^{+0.185}_{-0.154}$ at 68\% confidence level in the framework of a flat $Λ$CDM model. We conclude that the significant dependencies of $γ$ on both the redshift and the surface mass density, as well as the intrinsic scatter of $δ$ among the lenses, need to be properly taken into account in this method.
