A Deep X-ray Survey of the Globular Cluster Omega Centauri

We identify 233 X-ray sources, of which 95 are new, in a 222 ks exposure of Omega Centauri with the Chandra X-ray Observatory's ACIS-I detector. The limiting unabsorbed flux in the core is $f_x$ (0.5$-$6.0 keV) $\simeq$ 3 $\times$ 10$^{-16}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ ($L_X$ $\simeq$ 1 $\times$ 10$^{30}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at 5.2 kpc). We estimate that ~$60\pm 20$ of these are cluster members, of which ~30 lie within the core ($r_c$ $=$ 155 arcsec), and another ~30 between 1$-$2 core radii. We identify four new optical counterparts, for a total of 45 likely identifications. Probable cluster members include 18 cataclysmic variables (CVs) and CV candidates, one quiescent low-mass X-ray binary, four variable stars, and five stars that are either associated with w Cen's anomalous red giant branch, or are sub-subgiants. We estimate that the cluster contains $40\pm 10$ CVs with $L_X$ $>$ 10$^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$, confirming that CVs are underabundant in w Cen relative to the field. Intrinsic absorption is required to fit X-ray spectra of six of the nine brightest CVs, suggesting magnetic CVs, or high-inclination systems. Though no radio millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are currently known in w Cen, more than 30 unidentified sources have luminosities and X-ray colours like those of MSPs found in other globular clusters; these could be responsible for the Fermi-detected gamma-ray emission from the cluster. Finally, we identify a CH star as the counterpart to the second-brightest X-ray source in the cluster and argue that it is a symbiotic star. This is the first such giant/white dwarf binary to be identified in a globular cluster.

Searching for Dark Photon Dark Matter with Gravitational Wave Detectors

If dark matter stems from the background of a very light gauge boson, this gauge boson could exert forces on test masses in gravitational wave detectors, resulting in displacements with a characteristic frequency set by the gauge boson mass. We outline a novel search strategy to hunt for such dark matter, and show that both ground-based and future space-based gravitational wave detectors have the capability to make a 5$σ$ discovery in unexplored parameter regimes.

Dark Matter Annihilation from Nearby Ultra-compact Micro Halos to Explain the Tentative Excess at ~1.4 TeV in DAMPE data

The tentative 1.4 TeV excess in the $e^+e^-$ spectrum measured by The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) motivates the possible existence of one or more local dark matter concentrated regions. In particular, Ultra-compact Micro Halos (UCMHs) seeded by large density perturbations in the early universe, allocated within ~0.3 kpc from the solar system, could provide the potential source of electrons and positrons produced from dark matter annihilation, enough to explain the DAMPE signal. Here we consider a UCMH with density profile assuming radial in-fall and explore the preferred halo parameters to explain the 1.4 TeV "DAMPE excess". We find that typical parameter space of UCMHs can easily explain the "DAMPE excess" with usual thermal-averaged annihilation cross section of WIMP. The fraction of dark matter stored in such UCMHs in the Galactic-scale halo can be reduced to as small as $O(10^{-5})$, well within the current cosmological and astrophysical constraints.

Direct prediction of the solute softening-to-hardening transition in W-Re alloys using stochastic simulations of screw dislocation motion

Interactions among dislocations and solute atoms are the basis of several important processes in metals plasticity. In body-centered cubic (bcc) metals and alloys, low-temperature plastic flow is controlled by screw dislocation glide, which is known to take place by the nucleation and sideward relaxation of kink pairs across two consecutive \emph{Peierls} valleys. In alloys, dislocations and solutes affect each other's kinetics via long-range stress field coupling and short-range inelastic interactions. It is known that in certain substitutional bcc alloys a transition from solute softening to solute hardening is observed at a critical concentration. In this paper, we develop a kinetic Monte Carlo model of screw dislocation glide and solute diffusion in substitutional W-Re alloys. We find that dislocation kinetics is governed by two competing mechanisms. At low solute concentrations, nucleation is enhanced by the softening of the Peierls stress, which overcomes the elastic repulsion of Re atoms on kinks. This trend is reversed at higher concentrations, resulting in a minimum in the flow stress that is concentration and temperature dependent. This minimum marks the transition from solute softening to hardening, which is found to be in reasonable agreement with experiments.

An empirical study of touch-based authentication methods on smartwatches

The emergence of smartwatches poses new challenges to information security. Although there are mature touch-based authentication methods for smartphones, the effectiveness of using these methods on smartwatches is still unclear. We conducted a user study (n=16) to evaluate how authentication methods (PIN and Pattern), UIs (Square and Circular), and display sizes (38mm and 42mm) affect authentication accuracy, speed, and security. Circular UIs are tailored to smartwatches with fewer UI elements. Results show that 1) PIN is more accurate and secure than Pattern; 2) Pattern is much faster than PIN; 3) Square UIs are more secure but less accurate than Circular UIs; 4) display size does not affect accuracy or speed, but security; 5) Square PIN is the most secure method of all. The study also reveals a security concern that participants' favorite method is not the best in any of the measures. We finally discuss implications for future touch-based smartwatch authentication design.

An Extension of Deep Pathway Analysis: A Pathway Route Analysis Framework Incorporating Multi-dimensional Cancer Genomics Data

Recent breakthroughs in cancer research have come via the up-and-coming field of pathway analysis. By applying statistical methods to prior known gene and protein regulatory information, pathway analysis provides a meaningful way to interpret genomic data. While many gene/protein regulatory relationships have been studied, never before has such a significant amount data been made available in organized forms of gene/protein regulatory networks and pathways. However, pathway analysis research is still in its infancy, especially when applying it to solve practical problems. In this paper we propose a new method of studying biological pathways, one that cross analyzes mutation information, transcriptome and proteomics data. Using this outcome, we identify routes of aberrant pathways potentially responsible for the etiology of disease. Each pathway route is encoded as a bayesian network which is initialized with a sequence of conditional probabilities specifically designed to encode directionality of regulatory relationships encoded in the pathways. Far more complex interactions, such as phosphorylation and methylation, among others, in the pathways can be modeled using this approach. The effectiveness of our model is demonstrated through its ability to distinguish real pathways from decoys on TCGA mRNA-seq, mutation, Copy Number Variation and phosphorylation data for both Breast cancer and Ovarian cancer study. The majority of pathways distinguished can be confirmed by biological literature. Moreover, the proportion of correctly indentified pathways is \% higher than previous work where only mRNA-seq mutation data is incorporated for breast cancer patients. Consequently, such an in-depth pathway analysis incorporating more diverse data can give rise to the accuracy of perturbed pathway detection.

Development of a focused-X-ray luminescence tomography (FXLT) system

Biophotonics is an active research area in molecular imaging, genetic diagnosis and prognosis, with direct applicability in precision medicine. However, long-standing challenges of biophotonics are well known due to low signal-to-noise ratio and poor image quality, mainly due to strong optical scattering especially in deep tissues. Recently, X-ray luminescence computed tomography (XLCT) has emerged as a hybrid molecular imaging modality and shown great promises in overcoming the optical scattering in deep tissues. However, its high spatial resolution capacity has not been fully implemented yet. In this paper, with a superfine focused X-ray beam we design a focused-X-ray luminescence tomography (FXLT) system for spatial resolution better than 150 micrometers and molecular sensitivity of 2 micromolar. First, we describe our system design. Then, we demonstrate that the molecular sensitivity of FXLT is about 5 micromolar considering the emitted visible photons from background. Furthermore, we analyze the measurement time per scan from measured photons numbers with a fiber bundle-PMT setup, report numerical and experimental results. Finally, we specify the imaging system performance based on numerical simulations and physical measurements.

Temporal Action Detection with Structured Segment Networks

Detecting actions in untrimmed videos is an important yet challenging task. In this paper, we present the structured segment network (SSN), a novel framework which models the temporal structure of each action instance via a structured temporal pyramid. On top of the pyramid, we further introduce a decomposed discriminative model comprising two classifiers, respectively for classifying actions and determining completeness. This allows the framework to effectively distinguish positive proposals from background or incomplete ones, thus leading to both accurate recognition and localization. These components are integrated into a unified network that can be efficiently trained in an end-to-end fashion. Additionally, a simple yet effective temporal action proposal scheme, dubbed temporal actionness grouping (TAG) is devised to generate high quality action proposals. On two challenging benchmarks, THUMOS14 and ActivityNet, our method remarkably outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods, demonstrating superior accuracy and strong adaptivity in handling actions with various temporal structures.

Using LISA-like Gravitational Wave Detectors to Search for Primordial Black Holes

Primordial black hole (PBH), which can be naturally produced in the early universe, remains a promising dark matter candidate . It can merge with a supermassive black hole (SMBH) in the center of a galaxy and generate gravitational wave (GW) signals in the favored frequency region of LISA-like experiments. In this work, we initiate the study on the event rate calculation for such extreme mass ratio inspirals (EMRI). Including the sensitivities of various proposed GW detectors, we find that such experiments offer a novel and outstanding tool to test the scenario where PBH constitutes (fraction of) dark matter. The PBH energy density fraction of DM ($f_\text{PBH}$) could potentially be explored as small as $10^{-3} \sim 10^{-4}$. Further, LISA has the capability to search for PBH mass upto $10^{-2} \sim 10^{-1} M_\odot$. Other proposed GW experiments can probe lower PBH mass regime.

Searching for Confining Hidden Valleys at the LHC(b)

We explore strategies for probing Hidden Valley scenarios exhibiting confinement. Such scenarios lead to a multiplicity of light hidden hadrons from showering processes. Their decays are typically soft and displaced, making them challenging to probe with traditional LHC searches. We show the low trigger thresholds and excellent track and vertex reconstruction at LHCb provide an ideal environment to search for such signals -- in both muonic and hadronic channels. We also explore the potential of ATLAS/CMS and discuss modifications to present searches that might make these experiments competitive with the LHCb reach. Our proposed searches can probe $Z^{\prime}$ models with dominant decays to dark sectors as well as exotic Higgs boson decays in Twin Higgs models.

Faking SM Photons by Displaced Dark Photon Decays

A light meta-stable dark photon decaying into collimated electron/positron pair can fake a photon, either converted or unconverted, at the LHC. The detailed object identification relies on the specifics of the detector and strategies for the reconstruction. We study the fake rate based on the ATLAS(CMS) detector geometry and show that it can be O(1) with a generic choice of parameters. Especially, the probability of being registered as a photon is angular dependent. Such detector effects can induce bias to measurements on certain properties of new physics. In this paper, we consider the scenario where dark photons in final states are from a heavy resonance decay. Consequently, the detector effects can dramatically affect the results when determine the spin of a resonance. Further, if the decay products from the heavy resonance are one photon and one dark photon, which has a large probability to fake a diphoton event, the resonance is allowed to be a vector. Due to the difference in detector, the cross sections measured in ATLAS and CMS do not necessarily match. Furthermore, if the diphoton signal is given by the dark photons, the SM $Zγ$ and $ZZ$ final states do not necessarily come with the $γγ$ channel, which is a unique signature in our scenario. The issue studied here is relevant also for any future new physics searches with photon(s) in the final state. We discuss possible ways of distinguishing dark photon decay and real photon in the future.

Was the Universe Actually Radiation Dominated Prior to Nucleosynthesis?

Maybe not. String theory approaches to both beyond the Standard Model and Inflationary model building generically predict the existence of scalars (moduli) that are light compared to the scale of quantum gravity. These moduli become displaced from their low energy minima in the early universe and lead to a prolonged matter-dominated epoch prior to BBN. In this paper, we examine whether non-perturbative effects such as parametric resonance or tachyonic instabilities can shorten, or even eliminate, the moduli condensate and matter-dominated epoch. Such effects depend crucially on the strength of the couplings, and we find that unless the moduli become strongly coupled the matter-dominated epoch is unavoidable. In particular, we find that in string and M-theory compactifications where the lightest moduli are near the TeV-scale that a matter-dominated epoch will persist until the time of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis.

An On/Off Berry Phase Switch in Circular Graphene Resonators

The phase of a quantum state may not return to its original value after the system's parameters cycle around a closed path; instead, the wavefunction may acquire a measurable phase difference called the Berry phase. Berry phases typically have been accessed through interference experiments. Here, we demonstrate an unusual Berry-phase-induced spectroscopic feature: a sudden and large increase in the energy of angular-momentum states in circular graphene p-n junction resonators when a small critical magnetic field is reached. This behavior results from turning on a $π$-Berry phase associated with the topological properties of Dirac fermions in graphene. The Berry phase can be switched on and off with small magnetic field changes on the order of 10 mT, potentially enabling a variety of optoelectronic graphene device applications.

Cosmology and time dependent parameters induced by misaligned light scalar

We consider a scenario where time dependence on physical parameters is introduced by the misalignment of an ultra-light scalar field. The initial VEV of such field at the early time remains a constant until Hubble becomes comparable to its mass. Interesting cosmological consequences are considered. Light sterile neutrinos hinted by terrestrial neutrino experiments are studied as a benchmark model. We show the BBN constraints can be easily avoided in this scenario, even if reheating temperature is high. The scalar can be naturally light in spite of its couplings to other fields. Parameters of sterile neutrino may remain changing with time nowadays. This can further relax the tension from the recent IceCube constraints.

Incentivizing Reliable Demand Response with Customers' Uncertainties and Capacity Planning

One of the major issues with the integration of renewable energy sources into the power grid is the increased uncertainty and variability that they bring. If this uncertainty is not sufficiently addressed, it will limit the further penetration of renewables into the grid and even result in blackouts. Compared to energy storage, Demand Response (DR) has advantages to provide reserves to the load serving entities (LSEs) in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way. DR programs work by changing customers' loads when the power grid experiences a contingency such as a mismatch between supply and demand. Uncertainties from both the customer-side and LSE-side make designing algorithms for DR a major challenge. This paper makes the following main contributions: (i) We propose DR control policies based on the optimal structures of the offline solution. (ii) A distributed algorithm is developed for implementing the control policies without efficiency loss. (iii) We further offer an enhanced policy design by allowing flexibilities into the commitment level. (iv) We perform real world trace based numerical simulations which demonstrate that the proposed algorithms can achieve near optimal social cost. Details can be found in our extended version.

Harnessing Flexible and Reliable Demand Response Under Customer Uncertainties

Demand response (DR) is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach for mitigating the uncertainties in renewable energy integration by taking advantage of the flexibility of customers' demands. However, existing DR programs suffer from either low participation due to strict commitment requirements or not being reliable in voluntary programs. In addition, the capacity planning for energy storage/reserves is traditionally done separately from the demand response program design, which incurs inefficiencies. Moreover, customers often face high uncertainties in their costs in providing demand response, which is not well studied in literature. This paper first models the problem of joint capacity planning and demand response program design by a stochastic optimization problem, which incorporates the uncertainties from renewable energy generation, customer power demands, as well as the customers' costs in providing DR. We propose online DR control policies based on the optimal structures of the offline solution. A distributed algorithm is then developed for implementing the control policies without efficiency loss. We further offer enhanced policy design by allowing flexibilities into the commitment level. We perform real world trace based numerical simulations. Results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms can achieve near optimal social costs, and significant social cost savings compared to baseline methods.

A Pursuit of Temporal Accuracy in General Activity Detection

Detecting activities in untrimmed videos is an important but challenging task. The performance of existing methods remains unsatisfactory, e.g., they often meet difficulties in locating the beginning and end of a long complex action. In this paper, we propose a generic framework that can accurately detect a wide variety of activities from untrimmed videos. Our first contribution is a novel proposal scheme that can efficiently generate candidates with accurate temporal boundaries. The other contribution is a cascaded classification pipeline that explicitly distinguishes between relevance and completeness of a candidate instance. On two challenging temporal activity detection datasets, THUMOS14 and ActivityNet, the proposed framework significantly outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods, demonstrating superior accuracy and strong adaptivity in handling activities with various temporal structures.
