Music Artist Classification with Convolutional Recurrent Neural Networks

Previous attempts at music artist classification use frame level audio features which summarize frequency content within short intervals of time. Comparatively, more recent music information retrieval tasks take advantage of temporal structure in audio spectrograms using deep convolutional and recurrent models. This paper revisits artist classification with this new framework and empirically explores the impacts of incorporating temporal structure in the feature representation. To this end, an established classification architecture, a Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network (CRNN), is applied to the artist20 music artist identification dataset under a comprehensive set of conditions. These include audio clip length, which is a novel contribution in this work, and previously identified considerations such as dataset split and feature level. Our results improve upon baseline works, verify the influence of the producer effect on classification performance and demonstrate the trade-offs between audio length and training set size. The best performing model achieves an average F1 score of 0.937 across three independent trials which is a substantial improvement over the corresponding baseline under similar conditions. Additionally, to showcase the effectiveness of the CRNN's feature extraction capabilities, we visualize audio samples at the model's bottleneck layer demonstrating that learned representations segment into clusters belonging to their respective artists.

Detecting Axion-like Dark Matter with Linearly Polarized Pulsar Light

Non-relativistic QCD axions or axion-like particles are among the most popular candidates for cold Dark Matter (DM) in the universe. We proposed to detect axion-like DM, using linearly polarized pulsar light as a probe. Because of birefringence effect potentially caused by an oscillating galactic axion DM background, when pulsar light travels across the galaxy, its linear polarization angle may vary with time. With a soliton+NFW galactic DM density profile, we show that this strategy can potentially probe an axion-photon coupling as small as $\sim 10^{-13}$ GeV$^{-1}$ for axion mass $m_a \sim 10^{-22}-10^{-20}$ eV, given the current measurement accuracy. An exclusion limit stronger than CAST ($ \sim 10^{-10}$ GeV$^{-1}$) and SN1987A ($ \sim 10^{-11}$ GeV$^{-1}$) could be extended up to $m_a \sim 10^{-18}$ eV and $\sim 10^{-19}$ eV, respectively.

LSCP: Locally Selective Combination in Parallel Outlier Ensembles

In unsupervised outlier ensembles, the absence of ground truth makes the combination of base outlier detectors a challenging task. Specifically, existing parallel outlier ensembles lack a reliable way of selecting competent base detectors, affecting accuracy and stability, during model combination. In this paper, we propose a framework---called Locally Selective Combination in Parallel Outlier Ensembles (LSCP)---which addresses the issue by defining a local region around a test instance using the consensus of its nearest neighbors in randomly selected feature subspaces. The top-performing base detectors in this local region are selected and combined as the model's final output. Four variants of the LSCP framework are compared with seven widely used parallel frameworks. Experimental results demonstrate that one of these variants, LSCP_AOM, consistently outperforms baselines on the majority of twenty real-world datasets.

Observation of Spider Silk by Femtosecond Pulse Laser Second Harmonic Generation Microscopy

An asymmetric \b{eta}-sheet structure of spider silk is said to induce optical second harmonic generation. In this paper, using an in-house non-scanning type femtosecond pulse laser second harmonic generation microscope, we characterized the behavior of the \b{eta}-sheet of spider silk under an applied external force. The orientation of the \b{eta}-sheets was more unidirectional when the silk was extended. One of the origins of the high mechanical strength of the dragline is suggested to be the physical arrangement of its \b{eta}-sheets.

Self-Organized Criticality of Domain Walls and Magnetization Curve

We propose a kind of Ginzburg--Landau equation with quenched randomness. There is a pinning--depinning transition in the system when the external magnetic force is changed. The transition is self-organized when the external magnetic field is slowly changed under the demagnetizing effect. The total magnetization increases stepwise and the probability distribution of the increase in the total magnetization approximately obeys a power law. A hysteresis loop is obtained when the external magnetic field is changed reciprocally. In our model, the coercivity in the magnetization curve is expressed as the critical value for the pinning-depinning transition.

Inverse moving source problems in electrodynamics

This paper is concerned with the uniqueness on two inverse moving source problems in electrodynamics with partial boundary data. We show that (1) if the temporal source function is compactly supported, then the spatial source profile function or the orbit function can be uniquely determined by the tangential trace of the electric field measured on part of a sphere, (2) if the temporal function is given by a Dirac distribution, then the impulsive time point and the source location can be uniquely determined at four receivers on a sphere.

Identifications of Faint Chandra Sources in the Globular Cluster M3

We report a $30~\mathrm{ks}$ $Chandra$ ACIS-S survey of the globular cluster M3. Sixteen X-ray sources were detected within the half-light radius ($2.3'$) with $L_X \gtrsim 2.3 \times 10^{31}~\mathrm{erg~s^{-1}}$. We used $Hubble~Space~Telescope$ WFC3/UVIS and ACS/WFC images to find 10 plausible optical/UV counterparts. We fit the spectral energy distribution of the known cataclysmic variable 1E1339.8+2837 with a blue ($T_\mathrm{eff} = 2.10^{+1.96}_{-0.58}\times 10^4~\mathrm{K}$, 90% conf.) spectral component from an accretion disc, plus a red component ($T_\mathrm{eff} = 3.75_{-0.15}^{+1.05}\times 10^3~\mathrm{K}$) potentially from a subgiant donor. The second brightest source (CX2) has a soft blackbody-like spectrum suggesting a quiescent low-mass X-ray binary (qLMXB) containing a neutron star. Six new counterparts have obvious UV and/or blue excesses, suggesting a cataclysmic variable (CV) or background active galactic nucleus (AGN) nature. Two (CX6 and CX8) have proper motions indicating cluster membership, suggesting a CV nature. CX6 is blue in UV filters but red in V-I, which is difficult to interpret. Two CV candidates, CX7 and CX13, show blue excesses in B-V colour but were not detected in the UV. The other two CV candidates were only detected in the two UV bands ($\mathrm{UV_{275}}$ and $\mathrm{NUV_{336}}$), so do not have proper motion measurements, and may well be AGNs. One $Chandra$ source can be confidently identified with a red straggler (a star redward of the giant branch). The observed X-ray source population of M3 appears consistent with its predicted stellar interaction rate.

Indirect Mechanism Design for Efficient and Stable Renewable Energy Aggregation

Mechanism design is studied for aggregating renewable power producers (RPPs) in a two-settlement power market. Employing an indirect mechanism design framework, a payoff allocation mechanism (PAM) is derived from the competitive equilibrium (CE) of a specially formulated market with transferrable payoff. Given the designed mechanism, the strategic behaviors of the participating RPPs entail a non-cooperative game: It is proven that a unique pure Nash equilibrium (NE) exists among the RPPs, for which a closed-form expression is found. Moreover, it is proven that the designed mechanism achieves a number of key desirable properties at the NE: these include efficiency (i.e., an ideal "Price of Anarchy" of one), stability (i.e., "in the core" from a coalitional game theoretic perspective), and no collusion. In addition, it is shown that a set of desirable "ex-post" properties are also achieved by the designed mechanism. Extensive simulations are conducted and corroborate the theoretical results.

DLFuzz: Differential Fuzzing Testing of Deep Learning Systems

Deep learning (DL) systems are increasingly applied to safety-critical domains such as autonomous driving cars. It is of significant importance to ensure the reliability and robustness of DL systems. Existing testing methodologies always fail to include rare inputs in the testing dataset and exhibit low neuron coverage. In this paper, we propose DLFuzz, the frst differential fuzzing testing framework to guide DL systems exposing incorrect behaviors. DLFuzz keeps minutely mutating the input to maximize the neuron coverage and the prediction difference between the original input and the mutated input, without manual labeling effort or cross-referencing oracles from other DL systems with the same functionality. We present empirical evaluations on two well-known datasets to demonstrate its efficiency. Compared with DeepXplore, the state-of-the-art DL whitebox testing framework, DLFuzz does not require extra efforts to find similar functional DL systems for cross-referencing check, but could generate 338.59% more adversarial inputs with 89.82% smaller perturbations, averagely obtain 2.86% higher neuron coverage, and save 20.11% time consumption.

Stability for the inverse source problems in elastic and electromagnetic waves

This paper concerns the inverse source problems for the time-harmonic elastic and electromagnetic wave equations. The goal is to determine the external force and the electric current density from boundary measurements of the radiated wave field, respectively. The problems are challenging due to the ill-posedness and complex model systems. Uniqueness and stability are established for both of the inverse source problems. Based on either continuous or discrete multi-frequency data, a unified increasing stability theory is developed. The stability estimates consist of two parts: the Lipschitz type data discrepancy and the high frequency tail of the source functions. As the upper bound of frequencies increases, the latter decreases and thus becomes negligible. The increasing stability results reveal that ill-posedness of the inverse problems can be overcome by using multi-frequency data. The method is based on integral equations and analytical continuation, and requires the Dirichlet data only. The analysis employs asymptotic expansions of Green's tensors and the transparent boundary conditions by using the Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps. In addition, for the first time, the stability is established on the inverse source problems for both the Navier and Maxwell equations.

Ungerminated Rice Grains Observed by Femtosecond Pulse Laser Second-Harmonic Generation Microscopy

As a demonstration that second-order nonlinear optical microscopy is a powerful tool for rice grain science, we observed second-harmonic generation (SHG) images of amylose-free glutinous rice and amylose-containing nonglutinous rice grains. The images obtained from SHG microscopy and photographs of the iodine-stained starch granules indicate that the distribution of starch types in the embryo-facing endosperm region (EFR) depends on the type of rice and suggests that glucose, maltose, or both are localized on the testa side of the embryo. In the testa side of the embryo, crystallized glucose or maltose are judged to be detected by SHG. These monosaccharides and disaccharides play an important role, as they trigger energy in the initial stage of germination. These results confirm SHG microscopy is a good method to monitor the distribution of such sugars and amylopectin in the embryo and its neighboring regions of rice grains.

CommanderSong: A Systematic Approach for Practical Adversarial Voice Recognition

The popularity of ASR (automatic speech recognition) systems, like Google Voice, Cortana, brings in security concerns, as demonstrated by recent attacks. The impacts of such threats, however, are less clear, since they are either less stealthy (producing noise-like voice commands) or requiring the physical presence of an attack device (using ultrasound). In this paper, we demonstrate that not only are more practical and surreptitious attacks feasible but they can even be automatically constructed. Specifically, we find that the voice commands can be stealthily embedded into songs, which, when played, can effectively control the target system through ASR without being noticed. For this purpose, we developed novel techniques that address a key technical challenge: integrating the commands into a song in a way that can be effectively recognized by ASR through the air, in the presence of background noise, while not being detected by a human listener. Our research shows that this can be done automatically against real world ASR applications. We also demonstrate that such CommanderSongs can be spread through Internet (e.g., YouTube) and radio, potentially affecting millions of ASR users. We further present a new mitigation technique that controls this threat.

A Strong Test of the Dark Matter Origin of the 1.4 TeV DAMPE Signal Using IceCube Neutrinos

A tentative excess in the electron spectrum at 1.4 TeV was recently reported by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE). A non-astrophysical scenario in which dark matter particles annihilate or decay in a local clump has been invoked to explain the excess. If $e^\pm$ annihilation channels in the final states are mediated by left-handed leptons as a component in the $SU(2)_L$ doublet, neutrinos with similar energies should have been simultaneously produced. We demonstrate that generic dark matter models can be decisively tested by the existing IceCube data. In case of a non-detection, such models would be excluded at the $5σ$ level by the five-year data for a point-like source and by the ten-year data for an extended source of dark matter particles with left-handed leptons.

Electric Field Effect on Optical Second-harmonic Generation of Amphoteric Megamolecule Aggregates

We have detected second-order nonlinear optical response from an amphoteric mega-saccharides named sacran under a needle/ring electrode stimulus by using an optical second harmonic generation (SHG) microscope. SHG was observed from sacran in the neighborhood of the negatively biased needle electrode below -4.5 V with respect to the outer ring electrode. From the incident light polarization dependence of SHG, this sacran was suggested to be oriented toward the electrode needle. SHG of the sacran polymer was judged to be induced by sacran aggregates with net positive charge.

Second-order Nonlinear Optical Microscopy of Spider Silk

Asymmetric $\rm β$-sheet protein structures in spider silk should induce nonlinear optical interaction such as second harmonic generation (SHG) which is experimentally observed for a radial line and dragline spider silk by using an imaging femtosecond laser SHG microscope. By comparing different spider silks, we found that the SHG signal correlates with the existence of the protein $\rm β$-sheets. Measurements of the polarization dependence of SHG from the dragline indicated that the $\rm β$-sheet has a nonlinear response depending on the direction of the incident electric field. We propose a model of what orientation the $\rm β$-sheet takes in spider silk.

Optical Second-harmonic Images of Sacran Megamolecule Aggregates

We have detected a second-order nonlinear optical response from aggregates of the ampholytic megamolecular polysaccharide sacran extracted from cyanobacterial biomaterials, by using optical second harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy. The SHG images of sacran cotton-like lump, fibers, and cast films showed SHG intensity microspots of several tens of micrometers in size. The dependence of the SHG spot intensity on an excitation light polarization angle was observed to illustrate sacran molecular orientation in these microdomains. We also observed SHG signals around a special region of the cast film edges of sacran. These results show that sacran megamolecules aggregate in several different ways.

PM-GANs: Discriminative Representation Learning for Action Recognition Using Partial-modalities

Data of different modalities generally convey complimentary but heterogeneous information, and a more discriminative representation is often preferred by combining multiple data modalities like the RGB and infrared features. However in reality, obtaining both data channels is challenging due to many limitations. For example, the RGB surveillance cameras are often restricted from private spaces, which is in conflict with the need of abnormal activity detection for personal security. As a result, using partial data channels to build a full representation of multi-modalities is clearly desired. In this paper, we propose a novel Partial-modal Generative Adversarial Networks (PM-GANs) that learns a full-modal representation using data from only partial modalities. The full representation is achieved by a generated representation in place of the missing data channel. Extensive experiments are conducted to verify the performance of our proposed method on action recognition, compared with four state-of-the-art methods. Meanwhile, a new Infrared-Visible Dataset for action recognition is introduced, and will be the first publicly available action dataset that contains paired infrared and visible spectrum.
