Constraining Cosmology with Simulation-based inference and Optical Galaxy Cluster Abundance

We test the robustness of simulation-based inference (SBI) in the context of cosmological parameter estimation from galaxy cluster counts and masses in simulated optical datasets. We construct ``simulations'' using analytical models for the galaxy cluster halo mass function (HMF) and for the observed richness (number of observed member galaxies) to train and test the SBI method. We compare the SBI parameter posterior samples to those from an MCMC analysis that uses the same analytical models to construct predictions of the observed data vector. The two methods exhibit comparable performance, with reliable constraints derived for the primary cosmological parameters, ($Ω_m$ and $σ_8$), and richness-mass relation parameters. We also perform out-of-domain tests with observables constructed from galaxy cluster-sized halos in the Quijote simulations. Again, the SBI and MCMC results have comparable posteriors, with similar uncertainties and biases. Unsurprisingly, upon evaluating the SBI method on thousands of simulated data vectors that span the parameter space, SBI exhibits worsened posterior calibration metrics in the out-of-domain application. We note that such calibration tests with MCMC is less computationally feasible and highlight the potential use of SBI to stress-test limitations of analytical models, such as in the use for constructing models for inference with MCMC.

First Indication of Solar $^8$B Neutrino Flux through Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering in PandaX-4T

The PandaX-4T liquid xenon detector at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory is used to measure the solar $^8$B neutrino flux by detecting neutrinos through coherent scattering with xenon nuclei. Data samples requiring the coincidence of scintillation and ionization signals (paired), as well as unpaired ionization-only signals (US2), are selected with energy threshold of approximately 1.1 keV (0.33 keV) nuclear recoil energy. Combining the commissioning run and the first science run of PandaX-4T, a total exposure of 1.20 and 1.04 tonne$\cdot$year are collected for the paired and US2, respectively. After unblinding, 3 and 332 events are observed with an expectation of 2.8$\pm$0.5 and 251$\pm$32 background events, for the paired and US2 data, respectively. A combined analysis yields a best-fit $^8$B neutrino signal of 3.5 (75) events from the paired (US2) data sample, with $\sim$37\% uncertainty, and the background-only hypothesis is disfavored at 2.64$σ$ significance. This gives a solar $^8$B neutrino flux of ($8.4\pm3.1$)$\times$10$^6$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, consistent with the standard solar model prediction. It is also the first indication of solar $^8$B neutrino ``fog'' in a dark matter direct detection experiment.

Contextualization of ASR with LLM using phonetic retrieval-based augmentation

Large language models (LLMs) have shown superb capability of modeling multimodal signals including audio and text, allowing the model to generate spoken or textual response given a speech input. However, it remains a challenge for the model to recognize personal named entities, such as contacts in a phone book, when the input modality is speech. In this work, we start with a speech recognition task and propose a retrieval-based solution to contextualize the LLM: we first let the LLM detect named entities in speech without any context, then use this named entity as a query to retrieve phonetically similar named entities from a personal database and feed them to the LLM, and finally run context-aware LLM decoding. In a voice assistant task, our solution achieved up to 30.2% relative word error rate reduction and 73.6% relative named entity error rate reduction compared to a baseline system without contextualization. Notably, our solution by design avoids prompting the LLM with the full named entity database, making it highly efficient and applicable to large named entity databases.

Search for Cosmic-ray Boosted Sub-MeV Dark-Matter-Electron Scattering in PandaX-4T

We report the first search for the elastic scatterings between cosmic-ray boosted sub-MeV dark matter and electrons in the PandaX-4T liquid xenon experiment. Sub-MeV dark matter particles can be accelerated by scattering with electrons in the cosmic rays and produce detectable electron recoil signals in the detector. Using the commissioning data from PandaX-4T of 0.63~tonne$\cdot$year exposure, we set new constraints on DM-electron scattering cross sections for DM masses ranging from 10~eV/$c^2$ to 3~keV/$c^2$.

Constraints on the axial-vector and pseudo-scalar mediated WIMP-nucleus interactions from PandaX-4T experiment

We present the constraints on the axial-vector and pseudo-scalar mediated WIMP-nucleus interactions from the PandaX-4T experiment, using the data set corresponding to a total exposure of 0.63~tonne$\cdot$year. No significant signal excess is observed, and the most stringent upper limits to date on the spin-dependent WIMP-neutron scattering cross section are set at 90\% confidence level with the minimum WIMP-neutron scattering cross section of 5.8$\times 10^{-42}$\si{\cm^{2}} for WIMP mass of 40~\si{\GeV/}$c^2$. Exclusion limits on the axial-vector and pseudo-scalar simplified models are also derived.

DECam Multi-Messenger Astrophysics Pipeline. I. from Raw Data to Single-Exposure Candidates

We introduce a pipeline that performs rapid image subtraction and source selection to detect transients, with a focus on identifying gravitational wave optical counterparts using the Dark Energy Camera (DECam). In this work, we present the pipeline steps from processing raw data to identification of astrophysical transients on individual exposures. We process DECam data and build difference images using the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) Science Pipelines software, and we use flags and principal component analysis to select transients on a per-exposure basis, without associating the results from different exposures. Those candidates will be sent to brokers for further classification and alert distribution. We validate our pipeline using archival exposures that cover various types of objects, and the tested targets include a kilonova (GW170817), supernovae, stellar flares, variable stars (in a resolved galaxy or the Milky Way Bulge), and serendipitous objects. Overall, the data processing produces clean light curves that are comparable with published results, demonstrating the photometric quality of our pipeline. Real transients can be well selected by our pipeline when sufficiently bright (S/N $\gtrsim15$). This pipeline is intended to serve as a tool for the broader research community. Although this pipeline is designed for DECam, our method can be easily applied to other instruments and future LSST observations.

Cohomology theory of Rota-Baxter family BiHom-$Ω$-associative algebras

In this paper, we first introduce the concept of Rota-Baxter family BiHom-$Ω$-associative algebras, then we define the cochain complex of BiHom-$Ω$-associative algebras and verify it via Maurer-Cartan methods. Next, we further introduce and study the cohomology theory of Rota-Baxter family BiHom-$Ω$-associative algebras of weight $λ$ and show that this cohomology controls the corresponding deformations. Finally, we study abelian extensions of Rota-Baxter family BiHom-$Ω$-associative algebras in terms of the second cohomology group.

Measurement of Solar $pp$ Neutrino Flux using Electron Recoil Data from PandaX-4T Commissioning Run

The proton-proton ($pp$) fusion chain dominates the neutrino production from the Sun. The uncertainty of the predicted $pp$ neutrino flux is at the sub-percent level, whereas that of the best measurement is $\mathcal{O}(10\%)$. In this paper, we present the first result to measure the solar $pp$ neutrinos in the electron recoil energy range from 24 to 144 keV, using the PandaX-4T commissioning data with 0.63 tonne$\times$year exposure. The $pp$ neutrino flux is determined to be $(8.0 \pm 3.9 \,{\rm{(stat)}} \pm 10.0 \,{\rm{(syst)}} )\times 10^{10}\, $$\rm{s}^{-1} \rm{cm}^{-2}$, consistent with Standard Solar Model and existing measurements, corresponding to a flux upper limit of $23.3\times 10^{10}\, $$\rm{s}^{-1} \rm{cm}^{-2}$ at 90\% C.L..

Extending Structures for Dendriform Algebras

In this paper, we devote to extending structures for dendriform algebras. First, we define extending datums and unified products of dendriform algebras, and theoretically solve the extending structure problem. As an application, we consider flag datums as a special case of extending structures, and give an example of the extending structure problem. Second, we introduce matched pairs and bicrossed products of dendriform algebras and theoretically solve the factorization problem for dendriform algebras. Moreover, we also introduce cocycle semidirect products and nonabelian semidirect products as special cases of unified products. Finally, we define the deformation map on a dendriform extending structure (more general case), not necessary a matched pair, which is more practical in the classifying complements problem.

Signal Response Model in PandaX-4T

PandaX-4T experiment is a deep-underground dark matter direct search experiment that employs a dual-phase time projection chamber with a sensitive volume containing 3.7 tonne of liquid xenon. The detector of PandaX-4T is capable of simultaneously collecting the primary scintillation and ionization signals, utilizing their ratio to discriminate dark matter signals from background sources such as gamma rays and beta particles. The signal response model plays a crucial role in interpreting the data obtained by PandaX-4T. It describes the conversion from the deposited energy by dark matter interactions to the detectable signals within the detector. The signal response model is utilized in various PandaX-4T results. This work provides a comprehensive description of the procedures involved in constructing and parameter-fitting the signal response model for the energy range of approximately 1 keV to 25 keV for electronic recoils and 6 keV to 90 keV for nuclear recoils. It also covers the signal reconstruction, selection, and correction methods, which are crucial components integrated into the signal response model.

Improving child speech recognition with augmented child-like speech

State-of-the-art ASRs show suboptimal performance for child speech. The scarcity of child speech limits the development of child speech recognition (CSR). Therefore, we studied child-to-child voice conversion (VC) from existing child speakers in the dataset and additional (new) child speakers via monolingual and cross-lingual (Dutch-to-German) VC, respectively. The results showed that cross-lingual child-to-child VC significantly improved child ASR performance. Experiments on the impact of the quantity of child-to-child cross-lingual VC-generated data on fine-tuning (FT) ASR models gave the best results with two-fold augmentation for our FT-Conformer model and FT-Whisper model which reduced WERs with ~3% absolute compared to the baseline, and with six-fold augmentation for the model trained from scratch, which improved by an absolute 3.6% WER. Moreover, using a small amount of "high-quality" VC-generated data achieved similar results to those of our best-FT models.

Grant Free MIMO-NOMA with Differential Modulation for Machine Type Communications

This paper considers a challenging scenario of machine type communications, where we assume internet of things (IoT) devices send short packets sporadically to an access point (AP) and the devices are not synchronized in the packet level. High transmission efficiency and low latency are concerned. Motivated by the great potential of multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) in massive access, we design a grant-free MIMO-NOMA scheme, and in particular differential modulation is used so that expensive channel estimation at the receiver (AP) can be bypassed. The receiver at AP needs to carry out active device detection and multi-device data detection. The active user detection is formulated as the estimation of the common support of sparse signals, and a message passing based sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) algorithm is designed to solve the problem. Due to the use of differential modulation, we investigate the problem of non-coherent multi-device data detection, and develop a message passing based Bayesian data detector, where the constraint of differential modulation is exploited to drastically improve the detection performance, compared to the conventional non-coherent detection scheme. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed active device detector and non-coherent multi-device data detector.

Waveform Simulation in PandaX-4T

Signal reconstruction through software processing is a crucial component of the background and signal models in the PandaX-4T experiment, which is a multi-tonne dark matter direct search experiment. The accuracy of signal reconstruction is influenced by various detector artifacts, including noise, dark count of photomultiplier, impurity photoionization in the detector, and other relevant considerations. In this study, we present a detailed description of a semi-data-driven approach designed to simulate the signal waveform. This work provides a reliable model for the efficiency and bias of the signal reconstruction in the data analysis of PandaX-4T. By comparing critical variables which relate to the temporal shape and hit pattern of the signals, we demonstrate a good agreement between the simulation and data.

Searching for Two-Neutrino and Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of $^{134}$Xe with the PandaX-4T Experiment

$^{134}$Xe is a candidate isotope for neutrinoless double beta decay~($0νββ$) search. In addition, the two-neutrino case ($2νββ$) allowed by the Standard Model of particle physics has not yet been observed. Utilizing the 10.4% of $^{134}$Xe in the natural xenon in the PandaX-4T detector and its first 94.9-day exposure, we have established the most stringent constraints on $2νββ$ and $0νββ$ of $^{134}$Xe half-lives, with limits of $2.8\times10^{22}$ yr and $3.0\times10^{23}$ yr at 90% confidence level, respectively. The $2νββ$ ($0νββ$) limit surpasses the previously reported best result by a factor of 32 (2.7), highlighting the potential of large monolithic natural xenon detectors.

Weighted differential ($q$-tri)dendriform algebras

In this paper, we first introduce a weighted derivation on algebras over an operad $\cal P$, and prove that for the free $\cal P$-algebra, its weighted derivation is determined by the restriction on the generators. As applications, we propose the concept of weighted differential ($q$-tri)dendriform algebras and study some basic properties of them. Then Novikov-(tri)dendriform algebras are initiated, which can be induced from differential ($q$-tri) dendriform of weight zero. Finally, the corresponding free objects are constructed, in both the commutative and noncommutative contexts.

BiHom-$Ω$-associative algebras and related structures

In this paper, we first propose the concepts of BiHom-$Ω$-associative algebras, BiHom-$Ω$-dendriform algebras, BiHom-$Ω$-pre-Lie algebras and BiHom-$Ω$-Lie algebras. We then obtain a new BiHom-$Ω$-associative (resp. Lie) algebra by defining a new multiplication on a BiHom-$Ω$-associative (resp. Lie) algebra with the Rota-Baxter family of weight $λ$.In addition, we generalize the classical relationships of associative algebras, pre-Lie algebras, dendriform algebras and Lie algebras to the BiHom-$Ω$ version.

Joint Near Field Uplink Communication and Localization Using Message Passing-Based Sparse Bayesian Learning

This work deals with the problem of uplink communication and localization in an integrated sensing and communication system, where users are in the near field (NF) of antenna aperture due to the use of high carrier frequency and large antenna arrays at base stations. We formulate joint NF signal detection and localization as a problem of recovering signals with a sparse pattern. To solve the problem, we develop a message passing based sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) algorithm, where multiple unitary approximate message passing (UAMP)-based sparse signal estimators work jointly to recover the sparse signals with low complexity. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
