Shapley Q-value: A Local Reward Approach to Solve Global Reward Games

Cooperative game is a critical research area in the multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL). Global reward game is a subclass of cooperative games, where all agents aim to maximize the global reward. Credit assignment is an important problem studied in the global reward game. Most of previous works stood by the view of non-cooperative-game theoretical framework with the shared reward approach, i.e., each agent being assigned a shared global reward directly. This, however, may give each agent an inaccurate reward on its contribution to the group, which could cause inefficient learning. To deal with this problem, we i) introduce a cooperative-game theoretical framework called extended convex game (ECG) that is a superset of global reward game, and ii) propose a local reward approach called Shapley Q-value. Shapley Q-value is able to distribute the global reward, reflecting each agent's own contribution in contrast to the shared reward approach. Moreover, we derive an MARL algorithm called Shapley Q-value deep deterministic policy gradient (SQDDPG), using Shapley Q-value as the critic for each agent. We evaluate SQDDPG on Cooperative Navigation, Prey-and-Predator and Traffic Junction, compared with the state-of-the-art algorithms, e.g., MADDPG, COMA, Independent DDPG and Independent A2C. In the experiments, SQDDPG shows a significant improvement on the convergence rate. Finally, we plot Shapley Q-value and validate the property of fair credit assignment.

Optimal Sobolev regularity of $\bar\partial$ on the Hartogs triangle

In this paper, we show that for each $k\in \mathbb Z^+, p>4$, there exists a solution operator $\mathcal T_k$ to the $\bar\partial$ problem on the Hartogs triangle that maintains the same $W^{k, p}$ regularity as that of the data. According to a Kerzman-type example, this operator provides solutions with the optimal Sobolev regularity.

Optomechanical Effects in Nanocavity-enhanced Resonant Raman Scattering of a Single Molecule

In this article, we address the optomechanical effects in surface-enhanced resonant Raman scattering (SERRS) from a single molecule in a nano-particle on mirror (NPoM) nanocavity by developing a quantum master equation theory, which combines macroscopic quantum electrodynamics and electron-vibration interaction within the framework of open quantum system theory. We supplement the theory with electromagnetic simulations and time-dependent density functional theory calculations in order to study the SERRS of a methylene blue molecule in a realistic NPoM nanocavity. The simulations allow us not only to identify the conditions to achieve conventional optomechanical effects, such as vibrational pumping, non-linear scaling of Stokes and anti-Stokes scattering, but also to discovery distinct behaviors, such as the saturation of exciton population, the emergence of Mollow triplet side-bands, and higher-order Raman scattering. All in all, our study might guide further investigations of optomechanical effects in resonant Raman scattering.

Weighted Sobolev estimates of the truncated Beurling operator

Given a bounded planar domain $D$ with $W^{k+1, \infty}$ boundary, $ k\in \mathbb Z^+$, and a weight $μ\in A_p, 1<p<\infty$, we show that the corresponding truncated Beurling transform is a bounded operator sending $W^{k, p}(D, μ)$ into itself. Weighted Sobolev estimates for other Cauchy-type integrals are also obtained.

Rigidity theorems by capacities and kernels

For any open hyperbolic Riemann surface $X$, the Bergman kernel $K$, the logarithmic capacity $c_β$, and the analytic capacity $c_{B}$ satisfy the inequality chain $πK \geq c^2_β \geq c^2_B$; moreover, equality holds at a single point between any two of the three quantities if and only if $X$ is biholomorphic to a disk possibly less a relatively closed polar set. We extend the inequality chain by showing that $c_{B}^2 \geq πv^{-1}(X)$ on planar domains, where $v(\cdot)$ is the Euclidean volume, and characterize the extremal cases when equality holds at one point. Similar rigidity theorems concerning the Szegö kernel, the higher-order Bergman kernels, and the sublevel sets of the Green's function are also developed. Additionally, we explore rigidity phenomena related to the multi-dimensional Suita conjecture.

FV2ES: A Fully End2End Multimodal System for Fast Yet Effective Video Emotion Recognition Inference

In the latest social networks, more and more people prefer to express their emotions in videos through text, speech, and rich facial expressions. Multimodal video emotion analysis techniques can help understand users' inner world automatically based on human expressions and gestures in images, tones in voices, and recognized natural language. However, in the existing research, the acoustic modality has long been in a marginal position as compared to visual and textual modalities. That is, it tends to be more difficult to improve the contribution of the acoustic modality for the whole multimodal emotion recognition task. Besides, although better performance can be obtained by introducing common deep learning methods, the complex structures of these training models always result in low inference efficiency, especially when exposed to high-resolution and long-length videos. Moreover, the lack of a fully end-to-end multimodal video emotion recognition system hinders its application. In this paper, we designed a fully multimodal video-to-emotion system (named FV2ES) for fast yet effective recognition inference, whose benefits are threefold: (1) The adoption of the hierarchical attention method upon the sound spectra breaks through the limited contribution of the acoustic modality and outperforms the existing models' performance on both IEMOCAP and CMU-MOSEI datasets; (2) the introduction of the idea of multi-scale for visual extraction while single-branch for inference brings higher efficiency and maintains the prediction accuracy at the same time; (3) the further integration of data pre-processing into the aligned multimodal learning model allows the significant reduction of computational costs and storage space.

Zero-Norm Distance to Controllability of Linear Systems: Complexity, Bounds, and Algorithms

Determining the distance between a controllable system to the set of uncontrollable systems, namely, the controllability radius problem, has been extensively studied in the past. However, the opposite direction, that is, determining the `distance' between an uncontrollable system to the set of controllable systems, has seldom been considered. In this paper, we address this problem by defining the notion of zero-norm distance to controllability (ZNDC) to be the smallest number of entries (parameters) in the system matrices that need to be perturbed to make the original system controllable. We show genericity exists in this problem, so that other matrix norms (such as the $2$-norm or the Frobenius norm) adopted in this notion are nonsense. For ZNDC, we show it is NP-hard to compute, even when only the state matrix can be perturbed. We then provide some nontrivial lower and upper bounds. For its computation, we provide two heuristic algorithms. The first one is by transforming the ZNDC into a problem of structural controllability of linearly parameterized systems, and then greedily selecting the candidate links according to a suitable objective function. The second one is based on the weighted $l_1$-norm relaxation and the convex-concave procedure, which is tailored for ZNDC when additional structural constraints are involved in the perturbed parameters. Finally, we examine the performance of our proposed algorithms in several typical uncontrollable networks in multi-agent systems.

KuaiRand: An Unbiased Sequential Recommendation Dataset with Randomly Exposed Videos

Recommender systems deployed in real-world applications can have inherent exposure bias, which leads to the biased logged data plaguing the researchers. A fundamental way to address this thorny problem is to collect users' interactions on randomly expose items, i.e., the missing-at-random data. A few works have asked certain users to rate or select randomly recommended items, e.g., Yahoo!, Coat, and OpenBandit. However, these datasets are either too small in size or lack key information, such as unique user ID or the features of users/items. In this work, we present KuaiRand, an unbiased sequential recommendation dataset containing millions of intervened interactions on randomly exposed videos, collected from the video-sharing mobile App, Kuaishou. Different from existing datasets, KuaiRand records 12 kinds of user feedback signals (e.g., click, like, and view time) on randomly exposed videos inserted in the recommendation feeds in two weeks. To facilitate model learning, we further collect rich features of users and items as well as users' behavior history. By releasing this dataset, we enable the research of advanced debiasing large-scale recommendation scenarios for the first time. Also, with its distinctive features, KuaiRand can support various other research directions such as interactive recommendation, long sequential behavior modeling, and multi-task learning. The dataset and its news will be available at https://kuairand.com.

Toward a Human-Centered AI-assisted Colonoscopy System

AI-assisted colonoscopy has received lots of attention in the last decade. Several randomised clinical trials in the previous two years showed exciting results of the improving detection rate of polyps. However, current commercial AI-assisted colonoscopy systems focus on providing visual assistance for detecting polyps during colonoscopy. There is a lack of understanding of the needs of gastroenterologists and the usability issues of these systems. This paper aims to introduce the recent development and deployment of commercial AI-assisted colonoscopy systems to the HCI community, identify gaps between the expectation of the clinicians and the capabilities of the commercial systems, and highlight some unique challenges in Australia.

Top quark mass measurements at the $t\bar{t}$ threshold with CEPC

We present a study of top quark mass measurements at the $t\bar{t}$ threshold based on CEPC. A centre-of-mass energy scan near two times of the top mass is performed and the measurement precision of top quark mass, width and $α_S$ are evaluated using the $t\bar{t}$ production rates. Realistic scan strategies at the threshold are discussed to maximise the sensitivity to the measurement of the top quark properties individually and simultaneously in the CEPC scenarios assuming a limited total luminosity of 100 fb$^{-1}$. With the optimal scan for individual property measurements, the top quark mass precision is expected to be 9 MeV, the top quark width precision is expected to be 26 MeV, and $α_S$ can be measured at a precision of 0.00039. Taking into account the uncertainties from theory, background subtraction, beam energy and luminosity spectrum, the top quark mass can be measured at a precision of 14 MeV optimistically and 34 MeV conservatively at CEPC.

Asymptotic theory in network models with covariates and a growing number of node parameters

We propose a general model that jointly characterizes degree heterogeneity and homophily in weighted, undirected networks. We present a moment estimation method using node degrees and homophily statistics. We establish consistency and asymptotic normality of our estimator using novel analysis. We apply our general framework to three applications, including both exponential family and non-exponential family models. Comprehensive numerical studies and a data example also demonstrate the usefulness of our method.

Optimal $L^p$ regularity for $\bar\partial$ on the Hartogs triangle

In this paper, we prove weighted $L^p$ estimates for the canonical solutions on product domains. As an application, we show that if $p\in [4, \infty)$, the $\bar\partial$ equation on the Hartogs triangle with $L^p$ data admits $L^p$ solutions with the desired estimates. For any $ε>0$, by constructing an example with $L^p$ data but having no $L^{p+ε}$ solutions, we verify the sharpness of the $L^p$ regularity on the Hartogs triangle.

Cross-Scale Vector Quantization for Scalable Neural Speech Coding

Bitrate scalability is a desirable feature for audio coding in real-time communications. Existing neural audio codecs usually enforce a specific bitrate during training, so different models need to be trained for each target bitrate, which increases the memory footprint at the sender and the receiver side and transcoding is often needed to support multiple receivers. In this paper, we introduce a cross-scale scalable vector quantization scheme (CSVQ), in which multi-scale features are encoded progressively with stepwise feature fusion and refinement. In this way, a coarse-level signal is reconstructed if only a portion of the bitstream is received, and progressively improves the quality as more bits are available. The proposed CSVQ scheme can be flexibly applied to any neural audio coding network with a mirrored auto-encoder structure to achieve bitrate scalability. Subjective results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the classical residual VQ (RVQ) with scalability. Moreover, the proposed CSVQ at 3 kbps outperforms Opus at 9 kbps and Lyra at 3kbps and it could provide a graceful quality boost with bitrate increase.

CEPC Cost Model Study and Circumference Optimization

The CEPC is a proposed high luminosity Higgs/Z factory, with the potential to be upgraded to top factory at center-of-mass energy of 360GeV. We perform an optimization study on the circumference of CEPC. We calculate the instant luminosity, the construction and operation cost for different circumferences. With respect to the total cost and average cost per particle, we conclude that the optimal circumference for the CEPC Higgs operation is 80 km. Taking into account of the Z pole operation, the potential high-energy upgrade of CEPC (top factory), the optimal circumference increased to 100 km. The long future proton-proton upgrade of CEPC (SPPC) also favors a larger circumference, and we conclude that 100 km is the global optimized circumference for this facility.

WSSS4LUAD: Grand Challenge on Weakly-supervised Tissue Semantic Segmentation for Lung Adenocarcinoma

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide, and adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the most common subtype. Exploiting the potential value of the histopathology images can promote precision medicine in oncology. Tissue segmentation is the basic upstream task of histopathology image analysis. Existing deep learning models have achieved superior segmentation performance but require sufficient pixel-level annotations, which is time-consuming and expensive. To enrich the label resources of LUAD and to alleviate the annotation efforts, we organize this challenge WSSS4LUAD to call for the outstanding weakly-supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) techniques for histopathology images of LUAD. Participants have to design the algorithm to segment tumor epithelial, tumor-associated stroma and normal tissue with only patch-level labels. This challenge includes 10,091 patch-level annotations (the training set) and over 130 million labeled pixels (the validation and test sets), from 87 WSIs (67 from GDPH, 20 from TCGA). All the labels were generated by a pathologist-in-the-loop pipeline with the help of AI models and checked by the label review board. Among 532 registrations, 28 teams submitted the results in the test phase with over 1,000 submissions. Finally, the first place team achieved mIoU of 0.8413 (tumor: 0.8389, stroma: 0.7931, normal: 0.8919). According to the technical reports of the top-tier teams, CAM is still the most popular approach in WSSS. Cutmix data augmentation has been widely adopted to generate more reliable samples. With the success of this challenge, we believe that WSSS approaches with patch-level annotations can be a complement to the traditional pixel annotations while reducing the annotation efforts. The entire dataset has been released to encourage more researches on computational pathology in LUAD and more novel WSSS techniques.

Decoherence-Suppressed Non-adiabatic Holonomic Quantum Computation

Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation~(NHQC) provides an essential way to construct robust and high-fidelity quantum gates due to its geometric features. However, NHQC is more sensitive to the decay and dephasing errors than conventional dynamical gate since it requires an ancillary intermediate state. Here, we utilize the Hamiltonian reverse engineering technique to study the influence of the intermediate state-decoherence on the NHQC gate fidelity, and propose the novel schemes to construct the arbitrary single-qubit holonomic gate and nontrivial two-qubit holonomic gate with high fidelity and robustness to the decoherence. Although the proposed method is generic and can be applied to many experimental platforms, such as superconducting qubits, trapped ions, quantum dots, here we take nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center as an example to show that the gate fidelity can be significantly enhanced from 89\% to 99.6\% in contrast to the recent experimental NHQC schemes [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 140503 (2017); Nat. Photonics 11, 309 (2017); Opt. Lett. 43, 2380 (2018)], and the robustness against the decoherence can also be significantly improved. All in all, our scheme provides a promising way for fault-tolerant geometric quantum computation.

MobRecon: Mobile-Friendly Hand Mesh Reconstruction from Monocular Image

In this work, we propose a framework for single-view hand mesh reconstruction, which can simultaneously achieve high reconstruction accuracy, fast inference speed, and temporal coherence. Specifically, for 2D encoding, we propose lightweight yet effective stacked structures. Regarding 3D decoding, we provide an efficient graph operator, namely depth-separable spiral convolution. Moreover, we present a novel feature lifting module for bridging the gap between 2D and 3D representations. This module begins with a map-based position regression (MapReg) block to integrate the merits of both heatmap encoding and position regression paradigms for improved 2D accuracy and temporal coherence. Furthermore, MapReg is followed by pose pooling and pose-to-vertex lifting approaches, which transform 2D pose encodings to semantic features of 3D vertices. Overall, our hand reconstruction framework, called MobRecon, comprises affordable computational costs and miniature model size, which reaches a high inference speed of 83FPS on Apple A14 CPU. Extensive experiments on popular datasets such as FreiHAND, RHD, and HO3Dv2 demonstrate that our MobRecon achieves superior performance on reconstruction accuracy and temporal coherence. Our code is publicly available at https://github.com/SeanChenxy/HandMesh.

Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics Effects of Optically Cooled Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers Coupled to a High Frequency Microwave Resonator

Recent experiments demonstrated the cooling of a microwave mode of a high-quality dielectric resonator coupled to optically cooled nitrogen-vacancy (NV) spins in diamond. Our recent theoretical study [arXiv:2110.10950] pointed out the cooled NV spins can be used to realize cavity quantum electrodynamics effects (C-QED) at room temperature. In this article, we propose to modify the setup used in a recent diamond maser experiment [Nature 55, 493-496 (2018)], which features a higher spin transition frequency, a lower spin-dephasing rate and a stronger NV spins-resonator coupling, to realize better microwave mode cooling and the room-temperature CQED effects. To describe more precisely the optical spin cooling and the collective spin-resonator coupling, we extend the standard Jaynes-Cumming model to account for the rich electronic and spin levels of the NV centers. Our calculations show that for the proposed setup it is possible to cool the microwave mode from $293$ K (room temperature) to $116$ K, which is about $72$ K lower than the previous records, and to study the intriguing dynamics of the CQED effects under the weak-to-strong coupling transition by varying the laser power. With simple modifications, our model can be applied to, e.g., other solid-state spins or triplet spins of pentacene molecules, and to investigate other effects, such as the operations of pulsed and continuous-wave masing.
