Time-varying $β$-model for dynamic directed networks

We extend the well-known $β$-model for directed graphs to dynamic network setting, where we observe snapshots of adjacency matrices at different time points. We propose a kernel-smoothed likelihood approach for estimating $2n$ time-varying parameters in a network with $n$ nodes, from $N$ snapshots. We establish consistency and asymptotic normality properties of our kernel-smoothed estimators as either $n$ or $N$ diverges. Our results contrast their counterparts in single-network analyses, where $n\to\infty$ is invariantly required in asymptotic studies. We conduct comprehensive simulation studies that confirm our theory's prediction and illustrate the performance of our method from various angles. We apply our method to an email data set and obtain meaningful results.

Judicial Intelligent Assistant System: Extracting Events from Divorce Cases to Detect Disputes for the Judge

In formal procedure of civil cases, the textual materials provided by different parties describe the development process of the cases. It is a difficult but necessary task to extract the key information for the cases from these textual materials and to clarify the dispute focus of related parties. Currently, officers read the materials manually and use methods, such as keyword searching and regular matching, to get the target information. These approaches are time-consuming and heavily depending on prior knowledge and carefulness of the officers. To assist the officers to enhance working efficiency and accuracy, we propose an approach to detect disputes from divorce cases based on a two-round-labeling event extracting technique in this paper. We implement the Judicial Intelligent Assistant (JIA) system according to the proposed approach to 1) automatically extract focus events from divorce case materials, 2) align events by identifying co-reference among them, and 3) detect conflicts among events brought by the plaintiff and the defendant. With the JIA system, it is convenient for judges to determine the disputed issues. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach and system can obtain the focus of cases and detect conflicts more effectively and efficiently comparing with existing method.

Ultrafast Plasmon-mediated Superradiance from Vertically Standing Molecules in Metallic Nanocavities

Plasmon-mediated superradiance for molecules around metallic nanospheres was proposed ten years ago. However, its demonstration has not been achieved yet due to the experimental difficulty of positioning molecules, and the theoretical limitation to the enhanced collective rate of low excited molecules. In this Letter, we propose that the ultrafast plasmon-mediated superradiant pulses can be observed with strongly excited methylene blue molecules standing vertically inside gold nanoparticle-on-mirror nanocavities. Our simulations indicate that in this system the molecules could interact with each other via plasmon- and free-space mediated coherent and dissipative coupling. More importantly, the coherent coupling mediated by short-ranged propagating surface plasmons cancel largely the direct dipole-dipole coupling mediated by the free-space field, and the dominated dissipative coupling mediated by relatively long-ranged gap plasmons enables the ultrafast superradiant pulses within picosecond scale. Our study opens up the possibility of studying the rich superradiant effects from the quantum emitters in a sub-wavelength volumn by engineering the plasmonic environments.

Masked Distillation with Receptive Tokens

Distilling from the feature maps can be fairly effective for dense prediction tasks since both the feature discriminability and localization priors can be well transferred. However, not every pixel contributes equally to the performance, and a good student should learn from what really matters to the teacher. In this paper, we introduce a learnable embedding dubbed receptive token to localize those pixels of interests (PoIs) in the feature map, with a distillation mask generated via pixel-wise attention. Then the distillation will be performed on the mask via pixel-wise reconstruction. In this way, a distillation mask actually indicates a pattern of pixel dependencies within feature maps of teacher. We thus adopt multiple receptive tokens to investigate more sophisticated and informative pixel dependencies to further enhance the distillation. To obtain a group of masks, the receptive tokens are learned via the regular task loss but with teacher fixed, and we also leverage a Dice loss to enrich the diversity of learned masks. Our method dubbed MasKD is simple and practical, and needs no priors of tasks in application. Experiments show that our MasKD can achieve state-of-the-art performance consistently on object detection and semantic segmentation benchmarks. Code is available at: https://github.com/hunto/MasKD .

On the Reachability and Controllability of Temporal Continuous-Time Linear Networks: A Generic Analysis

Temporal networks are a class of time-varying networks, which change their topology according to a given time-ordered sequence of static networks (known as subsystems). This paper investigates the reachability and controllability of temporal continuous-time linear networks from a generic viewpoint, where only the zero-nonzero patterns of subsystem matrices are known. We demonstrate that the reachability and controllability on a single temporal sequence are generic properties with respect to the parameters of subsystem matrices and the time durations of subsystems. We then give explicit expressions for the minimal subspace that contains the reachable set across all possible temporal sequences (called overall reachable set). It is found that verifying the structural reachability/controllability and structural overall reachability are at least as hard as the structural target controllability verification problem of a single system, implying that finding verifiable conditions for them is hard. Graph-theoretic lower and upper bounds are provided for the generic dimensions of the reachable subspace on a single temporal sequence and of the minimal subspace that contains the overall reachable set. These bounds extend classical concepts in structured system theory, including the dynamic graph and the cactus, to temporal networks, and can be efficiently calculated using graph-theoretic algorithms. Finally, applications of the results to the structural controllability of switched linear systems are discussed.

Disentangled Feature Learning for Real-Time Neural Speech Coding

Recently end-to-end neural audio/speech coding has shown its great potential to outperform traditional signal analysis based audio codecs. This is mostly achieved by following the VQ-VAE paradigm where blind features are learned, vector-quantized and coded. In this paper, instead of blind end-to-end learning, we propose to learn disentangled features for real-time neural speech coding. Specifically, more global-like speaker identity and local content features are learned with disentanglement to represent speech. Such a compact feature decomposition not only achieves better coding efficiency by exploiting bit allocation among different features but also provides the flexibility to do audio editing in embedding space, such as voice conversion in real-time communications. Both subjective and objective results demonstrate its coding efficiency and we find that the learned disentangled features show comparable performance on any-to-any voice conversion with modern self-supervised speech representation learning models with far less parameters and low latency, showing the potential of our neural coding framework.

Time-Variance Aware Real-Time Speech Enhancement

Time-variant factors often occur in real-world full-duplex communication applications. Some of them are caused by the complex environment such as non-stationary environmental noises and varying acoustic path while some are caused by the communication system such as the dynamic delay between the far-end and near-end signals. Current end-to-end deep neural network (DNN) based methods usually model the time-variant components implicitly and can hardly handle the unpredictable time-variance in real-time speech enhancement. To explicitly capture the time-variant components, we propose a dynamic kernel generation (DKG) module that can be introduced as a learnable plug-in to a DNN-based end-to-end pipeline. Specifically, the DKG module generates a convolutional kernel regarding to each input audio frame, so that the DNN model is able to dynamically adjust its weights according to the input signal during inference. Experimental results verify that DKG module improves the performance of the model under time-variant scenarios, in the joint acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) and deep noise suppression (DNS) tasks.

Real-time speech enhancement with dynamic attention span

For real-time speech enhancement (SE) including noise suppression, dereverberation and acoustic echo cancellation, the time-variance of the audio signals becomes a severe challenge. The causality and memory usage limit that only the historical information can be used for the system to capture the time-variant characteristics. We propose to adaptively change the receptive field according to the input signal in deep neural network based SE model. Specifically, in an encoder-decoder framework, a dynamic attention span mechanism is introduced to all the attention modules for controlling the size of historical content used for processing the current frame. Experimental results verify that this dynamic mechanism can better track time-variant factors and capture speech-related characteristics, benefiting to both interference removing and speech quality retaining.

A Cooperative Content Dissemination Framework for Fog-Based Internet of Vehicles

As the fog-based internet of vehicles (IoV) is equipped with rich perception, computing, communication and storage resources, it provides a new solution for the bulk data processing. However, the impact caused by the mobility of vehicles brings a challenge to the content scheduling and resource allocation of content dissemination service. In this paper, we propose a time-varying resource relationship graph to model the intertwined impact of the perception, computation, communication and storage resources across multiple snapshots on the content dissemination process of IoV. Based on this graph model, the content dissemination process is modeled as a mathematical optimization problem, where the quality of service of both delay tolerant and delay sensitive services are considered. Owing to its NP-completeness, the optimization problem is decomposed into a joint link and subchannel scheduling subproblem and as well a joint power and flow control subproblem. Then, a cascaded low complexity scheduling algorithm is proposed for the joint link and subchannel scheduling subproblem. Moreover, a robust resource management algorithm is developed for the power and flow control subproblem, where the channel uncertainties in future snapshots are fully considered in the algorithm. Finally, we conduct simulations to show that the effectiveness of the proposed approaches outperforms other state-of-art approaches.

Divide and Conquer: Towards Better Embedding-based Retrieval for Recommender Systems From a Multi-task Perspective

Embedding-based retrieval (EBR) methods are widely used in modern recommender systems thanks to its simplicity and effectiveness. However, along the journey of deploying and iterating on EBR in production, we still identify some fundamental issues in existing methods. First, when dealing with large corpus of candidate items, EBR models often have difficulties in balancing the performance on distinguishing highly relevant items (positives) from both irrelevant ones (easy negatives) and from somewhat related yet not competitive ones (hard negatives). Also, we have little control in the diversity and fairness of the retrieval results because of the ``greedy'' nature of nearest vector search. These issues compromise the performance of EBR methods in large-scale industrial scenarios. This paper introduces a simple and proven-in-production solution to overcome these issues. The proposed solution takes a divide-and-conquer approach: the whole set of candidate items are divided into multiple clusters and we run EBR to retrieve relevant candidates from each cluster in parallel; top candidates from each cluster are then combined by some controllable merging strategies. This approach allows our EBR models to only concentrate on discriminating positives from mostly hard negatives. It also enables further improvement from a multi-tasking learning (MTL) perspective: retrieval problems within each cluster can be regarded as individual tasks; inspired by recent successes in prompting and prefix-tuning, we propose an efficient task adaption technique further boosting the retrieval performance within each cluster with negligible overheads.

SHAQ: Incorporating Shapley Value Theory into Multi-Agent Q-Learning

Value factorisation is a useful technique for multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) in global reward game, however its underlying mechanism is not yet fully understood. This paper studies a theoretical framework for value factorisation with interpretability via Shapley value theory. We generalise Shapley value to Markov convex game called Markov Shapley value (MSV) and apply it as a value factorisation method in global reward game, which is obtained by the equivalence between the two games. Based on the properties of MSV, we derive Shapley-Bellman optimality equation (SBOE) to evaluate the optimal MSV, which corresponds to an optimal joint deterministic policy. Furthermore, we propose Shapley-Bellman operator (SBO) that is proved to solve SBOE. With a stochastic approximation and some transformations, a new MARL algorithm called Shapley Q-learning (SHAQ) is established, the implementation of which is guided by the theoretical results of SBO and MSV. We also discuss the relationship between SHAQ and relevant value factorisation methods. In the experiments, SHAQ exhibits not only superior performances on all tasks but also the interpretability that agrees with the theoretical analysis. The implementation of this paper is on https://github.com/hsvgbkhgbv/shapley-q-learning.

Capacity Analysis of Holographic MIMO Channels with Practical Constraints

Holographic Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MIMO) is envisioned as a promising technology to realize unprecedented spectral efficiency by integrating a large number of antennas into a compact space. Most research on holographic MIMO is based on isotropic scattering environments, and the antenna gain is assumed to be unlimited by deployment space. However, the channel might not satisfy isotropic scattering because of generalized angle distributions, and the antenna gain is limited by the array aperture in reality. In this letter, we aim to analyze the holographic MIMO channel capacity under practical angle distribution and array aperture constraints. First, we calculate the spectral density for generalized angle distributions by introducing a wavenumber domain-based method. And then, the capacity under generalized angle distributions is analyzed and two different aperture schemes are considered. Finally, numerical results show that the capacity is obviously affected by angle distribution at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) but hardly affected at low SNR, and the capacity will not increase infinitely with antenna density due to the array aperture constraint.

Superradiant Masing with Solid-state Spins at Room Temperature

Steady-state superradiance and superradiant lasing attract significant attentions in the field of optical lattice clocks, but have not been achieved so far due to the technical challenges and atom loss problem. In this article, we propose that their counter-part may be observed in the microwave domain with solid-state spins-microwave resonator systems at room temperature with realistic technical restrictions. To validate our proposal, we investigate systematically the system dynamics and steady-state by solving quantum master equations for the multi-level and multi-process dynamic of trillions of spins. To this end, we employ a mean-field approach, and convert the mean-field dynamics of the spin ensemble into the one in a more intuitive Dicke state picture. Our calculations show that for systems with nitrogen vacancy center spins and pentacene molecular spins the superradiant Rabi oscillations occur firstly due to transitions among different Dicke states, and the subsequent continuous-wave superradiant masing can achieve a linewidth well below millihertz. Our work may guide further exploration of transient and steady-state superradiant masing with the mentioned and other solid-state spins systems, such as silicon vacancy centers in silicon carbide and boron vacancy centers in hexagonal boron nitride, where the coherent radiation with ultra-narrow linewidth may find applications in deep-space communications, radio astronomy and high-precision metrology.

Frequency Measurement with Superradiant Pulses of Incoherently Pumped Calcium Atoms: Role of Quantum Measurement Backaction

A recent experiment demonstrated heterodyne detection-based frequency measurements with superradiant pulses from coherently pumped strontium atoms in an optical lattice clock system, while another experiment has analyzed the statistics of superradiant pulses from incoherently pumped calcium atoms in a similar system. In this article, we propose to perform heterodyne detection of the superradiant pulses from the calcium atoms, and analyze theoretically the corresponding atomic ensemble dynamics in terms of the rotation of a collective spin vector and the incoherent quantum jumps among superradiant Dicke states. We examine the effect of quantum measurement backaction on the emitted field and the collective spin vector dynamics, and we demonstrate that it plays an essential role in the modelling of the frequency measurements. We develop a stochastic mean field theory, which is also applicable to model frequency measurements with steady-state superradiance signals, and to explore quantum measurement effects in the dynamics of atomic ensembles.

Mask the Correct Tokens: An Embarrassingly Simple Approach for Error Correction

Text error correction aims to correct the errors in text sequences such as those typed by humans or generated by speech recognition models. Previous error correction methods usually take the source (incorrect) sentence as encoder input and generate the target (correct) sentence through the decoder. Since the error rate of the incorrect sentence is usually low (e.g., 10\%), the correction model can only learn to correct on limited error tokens but trivially copy on most tokens (correct tokens), which harms the effective training of error correction. In this paper, we argue that the correct tokens should be better utilized to facilitate effective training and then propose a simple yet effective masking strategy to achieve this goal. Specifically, we randomly mask out a part of the correct tokens in the source sentence and let the model learn to not only correct the original error tokens but also predict the masked tokens based on their context information. Our method enjoys several advantages: 1) it alleviates trivial copy; 2) it leverages effective training signals from correct tokens; 3) it is a plug-and-play module and can be applied to different models and tasks. Experiments on spelling error correction and speech recognition error correction on Mandarin datasets and grammar error correction on English datasets with both autoregressive and non-autoregressive generation models show that our method improves the correction accuracy consistently.

Real-time Short Video Recommendation on Mobile Devices

Short video applications have attracted billions of users in recent years, fulfilling their various needs with diverse content. Users usually watch short videos on many topics on mobile devices in a short period of time, and give explicit or implicit feedback very quickly to the short videos they watch. The recommender system needs to perceive users' preferences in real-time in order to satisfy their changing interests. Traditionally, recommender systems deployed at server side return a ranked list of videos for each request from client. Thus it cannot adjust the recommendation results according to the user's real-time feedback before the next request. Due to client-server transmitting latency, it is also unable to make immediate use of users' real-time feedback. However, as users continue to watch videos and feedback, the changing context leads the ranking of the server-side recommendation system inaccurate. In this paper, we propose to deploy a short video recommendation framework on mobile devices to solve these problems. Specifically, we design and deploy a tiny on-device ranking model to enable real-time re-ranking of server-side recommendation results. We improve its prediction accuracy by exploiting users' real-time feedback of watched videos and client-specific real-time features. With more accurate predictions, we further consider interactions among candidate videos, and propose a context-aware re-ranking method based on adaptive beam search. The framework has been deployed on Kuaishou, a billion-user scale short video application, and improved effective view, like and follow by 1.28%, 8.22% and 13.6% respectively.

On Polynomially Solvable Constrained Input Selections for Fixed and Switched Linear Structured Systems

This paper investigates two related optimal input selection problems for fixed (non-switched) and switched structured systems. More precisely, we consider selecting the minimum cost of inputs from a prior set of inputs, and selecting the inputs of the smallest possible cost with a bound on their cardinality, all to ensure system structural controllability. Those problems have attracted much attention recently; unfortunately, they are NP-hard in general. In this paper, it is found that, if the input structure satisfies certain `regularizations', which are characterized by the proposed restricted total unimodulairty notion, those problems can be solvable in polynomial time via linear programming (LP) relaxations. Particularly, the obtained characterizations depend only on the incidence matrix relating the inputs and the source strongly connected components (SCC) of the system structure, irrespective of how the inputs actuate states within the same SCC. They cover all the currently known polynomially solvable cases (such as the dedicated input case), and contain many new cases unexploited in the past, among which the source-SCC separated input (SSSI) constraint is highlighted. Further, for switched systems, the obtained polynomially solvable condition (namely the joint SSSI constraint) does not require each of the subsystems to satisfy the SSSI constraint. We achieve these by first formulating those problems as equivalent integer linear programmings (ILPs), and then proving total unimodularity of the corresponding constraint matrices. This property allows us to solve those ILPs efficiently via LP-relaxation. We also discuss solutions obtained via LP-relaxation and LP-rounding in the general case. Several examples are given to illustrate the obtained theoretical results.
