Secret Sharing on Superconcentrator

We study the arithmetic circuit complexity of threshold secret sharing schemes by characterizing the graph-theoretic properties of arithmetic circuits that compute the shares. Using information inequalities, we prove that any unrestricted arithmetic circuit (with arbitrary gates and unbounded fan-in) computing the shares must satisfy superconcentrator-like connectivity properties. Specifically, when the inputs consist of the secret and $t-1$ random elements, and the outputs are the $n$ shares of a $(t, n)$-threshold secret sharing scheme, the circuit graph must be a $(t, n)$-concentrator; moreover, after removing the secret input, the remaining graph is a $(t-1, n)$-concentrator. Conversely, we show that any graph satisfying these properties can be transformed into a linear arithmetic circuit computing the shares of a threshold secret sharing scheme, assuming a sufficiently large field. As a consequence, we derive upper and lower bounds on the arithmetic circuit complexity of computing the shares in threshold secret sharing schemes.

The ALPINE-CRISTAL-JWST Survey: Chemical Abundance Comparison Between the ISM and CGM of Main-Sequence Galaxies at z=4-6

Gaseous halos around galaxies play an important role in galaxy evolution. The exchange of metals from the interstellar medium (ISM) to the circumgalactic medium (CGM) are caused by the formation, feedback, and/or merging history of galaxies. We study the variation in chemical composition between the ISM ($\lesssim3\,$kpc) and CGM ($\sim5-10\,$kpc) for a sample of $M_{\star}>10^{9.5}\,M_{\odot}$ main-sequence galaxies at $4<z<6$ with both JWST and ALMA observations. Using JWST/NIRSpec integral field spectroscopy, we derive the optical line ratios from the ISM and the CGM for our sample focusing on the typical optical lines used for metallicity studies. Our comparison shows that the ISM and the CGM have similar chemical abundances. This indicates that the CGM of these typical $4<z<6$ galaxies is enriched to the level of their ISM in the early universe. Using statistical tests, we find that some of the line ratios show marginal differences between the ISM and CGM. Combined with \texttt{Cloudy} modeling, our results suggest that a difference in ionization level (higher for the ISM) is the dominant reason for the observed ratio difference of oxygen line ratios. There is also indication of a deficit in the nitrogen abundance with respect to oxygen in the CGM, which suggests a delay in redistribution of secondary nitrogen. Finally, an enhanced $F_{[\rm CII]\rm 158μm}/F_{\rm Hα}$ ratio is observed in the CGM, suggesting that feedback and/or mergers play a key role in metal mixing.

CareerPooler: AI-Powered Metaphorical Pool Simulation Improves Experience and Outcomes in Career Exploration

Career exploration is uncertain, requiring decisions with limited information and unpredictable outcomes. While generative AI offers new opportunities for career guidance, most systems rely on linear chat interfaces that produce overly comprehensive and idealized suggestions, overlooking the non-linear and effortful nature of real-world trajectories. We present CareerPooler, a generative AI-powered system that employs a pool-table metaphor to simulate career development as a spatial and narrative interaction. Users strike balls representing milestones, skills, and random events, where hints, collisions, and rebounds embody decision-making under uncertainty. In a within-subjects study with 24 participants, CareerPooler significantly improved engagement, information gain, satisfaction, and career clarity compared to a chatbot baseline. Qualitative findings show that spatial-narrative interaction fosters experience-based learning, resilience through setbacks, and reduced psychological burden. Our findings contribute to the design of AI-assisted career exploration systems and more broadly suggest that visually grounded analogical interactions can make generative systems engaging and satisfying.

Peeking Ahead of the Field Study: Exploring VLM Personas as Support Tools for Embodied Studies in HCI

Field studies are irreplaceable but costly, time-consuming, and error-prone, which need careful preparation. Inspired by rapid-prototyping in manufacturing, we propose a fast, low-cost evaluation method using Vision-Language Model (VLM) personas to simulate outcomes comparable to field results. While LLMs show human-like reasoning and language capabilities, autonomous vehicle (AV)-pedestrian interaction requires spatial awareness, emotional empathy, and behavioral generation. This raises our research question: To what extent can VLM personas mimic human responses in field studies? We conducted parallel studies: 1) one real-world study with 20 participants, and 2) one video-study using 20 VLM personas, both on a street-crossing task. We compared their responses and interviewed five HCI researchers on potential applications. Results show that VLM personas mimic human response patterns (e.g., average crossing times of 5.25 s vs. 5.07 s) lack the behavioral variability and depth. They show promise for formative studies, field study preparation, and human data augmentation.

Quantization-aware Photonic Homodyne computing for Accelerated Artificial Intelligence and Scientific Simulation

Modern problems in high-performance computing, ranging from training and inferencing deep learning models in computer vision and language models to simulating complex physical systems with nonlinearly-coupled equations, require exponential growth of computational resources. Photonic analog systems are emerging with solutions of intrinsic parallelism, high bandwidth, and low propagation loss. However, their application has been hindered by the low analog accuracy due to the electro-optic distortion, material nonlinearities, and signal-to-noise ratios. Here we overcome this barrier with a quantization-aware digital-photonic mixed-precision framework across chiplets for accelerated AI processing and physical simulation. Using Lithium Niobate photonics with channel equalization techniques, we demonstrate linear multiplication (9-bit amplitude-phase decoupling) in homodyne optical logics with 6-bit precision at the clock rate of 128 giga-symbol-per-second (128 GS/s), enabling AI processing with 6 ns latency. Codesign hardware-algorithms, including iterative solvers, sparse-dense quantization, and bit-sliced matrix multiplication, explore photonic amplitude and phase coherence for complex-valued, physics-inspired computation. In electromagnetic problems, our approach yields 12-bit solutions for partial differential equations (PDEs) in scattering problems that would conventionally require up to 32-bit and often even 64-bit precision. These results preserve digital-level fidelity while leveraging the high-speed low-energy photonic hardware, establishing a pathway toward general-purpose optical acceleration for generative artificial intelligence, real-time robotics, and accurate simulation for climate challenges and biological discoveries.

Electronic Structure and Superconducting Gap of HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+δ}$ Revealed by Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

The spatially-resolved laser-based high resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements have been performed on the optimally-doped HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+δ}$ (Hg1223) superconductor with a $T_c$ at 133 K. Two distinct regions are identified on the cleaved surface: the single Fermi surface region where only one Fermi surface is observed, and the double Fermi surface region where two Fermi surface sheets are resolved coming from both the inner (IP) and outer (OP) CuO$_2$ planes. The electronic structure and superconducting gap are measured on both of these two regions. In both cases, the observed electronic states are mainly concentrated near the nodal region. The momentum dependence of superconducting gap deviates from the standard d-wave form. These results indicate that the surface electronic structure of Hg1223 behaves more like that of underdoped cuprates.

Autonomous Chain-of-Thought Distillation for Graph-Based Fraud Detection

Graph-based fraud detection on text-attributed graphs (TAGs) requires jointly modeling rich textual semantics and relational dependencies. However, existing LLM-enhanced GNN approaches are constrained by predefined prompting and decoupled training pipelines, limiting reasoning autonomy and weakening semantic-structural alignment. We propose FraudCoT, a unified framework that advances TAG-based fraud detection through autonomous, graph-aware chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning and scalable LLM-GNN co-training. To address the limitations of predefined prompts, we introduce a fraud-aware selective CoT distillation mechanism that generates diverse reasoning paths and enhances semantic-structural understanding. These distilled CoTs are integrated into node texts, providing GNNs with enriched, multi-hop semantic and structural cues for fraud detection. Furthermore, we develop an efficient asymmetric co-training strategy that enables end-to-end optimization while significantly reducing the computational cost of naive joint training. Extensive experiments on public and industrial benchmarks demonstrate that FraudCoT achieves up to 8.8% AUPRC improvement over state-of-the-art methods and delivers up to 1,066x speedup in training throughput, substantially advancing both detection performance and efficiency.

The Hilbert-Schmidt norms of quantum channels and matrix integrals over the unit sphere

The dynamics of quantum systems are generally described by a family of quantum channels (linear, completely positive and trace preserving maps). In this note, we mainly study the range of all possible values of $\|\mathcal{E}\|_2^2+\|\widetilde{\mathcal{E}}\|_2^2$ for quantum channels $\mathcal{E}$ and give the equivalent characterizations for quantum channels that achieve these maximum and minimum values, respectively, where $\|\mathcal{E}\|_2$ is the Hilbert-Schmidt norm of $\mathcal{E}$ and $\widetilde{\mathcal{E}}$ is a complementary channel of $\mathcal{E}.$ Also, we get a concrete description of completely positive maps on infinite dimensional systems preserving pure states. Moreover, the equivalency of several matrix integrals over the unit sphere is demonstrated and some extensions of these matrix integrals are obtained.

Rotation of the Globular Cluster Population of the Dark Matter Deficient Galaxy NGC 1052-DF4: Implication for the Total Mass

We explore the globular cluster population of NGC 1052-DF4, a dark matter deficient galaxy, using Bayesian inference to search for the presence of rotation. The existence of such a rotating component is relevant to the estimation of the mass of the galaxy, and therefore the question of whether NGC 1052-DF4 is truly deficient of dark matter, similar to NGC 1052-DF2 another galaxy in the same group. The rotational characteristics of seven globular clusters in NGC 1052-DF4 were investigated, finding that a non-rotating kinematic model has a higher Bayesian evidence than a rotating model, by a factor of approximately 2.5. In addition, we find that under the assumption of rotation, its amplitude must be small. This distinct lack of rotation strengthens the case that, based on its intrinsic velocity dispersion, NGC 1052-DF4 is a truly dark matter deficient galaxy.

Revisiting The Cosmological Time Dilation of Distant Quasars: Influence of Source Properties and Evolution

After decades of searching, cosmological time dilation was recently identified in the timescale of variability seen in distant quasars. Here, we expand on the previous analysis to disentangle this cosmological signal from the influence of the properties of the source population, specifically the quasar bolometric luminosity and the rest-frame emission wavelength at which the variability was observed. Furthermore, we consider the potential influence of the evolution of the quasar population over cosmic time. We find that a significant intrinsic scatter of 0.288 +- 0.021 dex in the variability timescales, which was not considered in the previous analysis, is favoured by the data. This slightly increases the uncertainty in the results. However, the expected cosmological dependence of the variability timescales is confirmed to be robust to changes in the underlying assumptions. We find that the variability timescales increase smoothly with both wavelength and bolometric luminosity, and that black hole mass has no effect on the variability timescale once rest wavelength and bolometric luminosity are accounted for. Moreover, if the standard cosmological model is correct, governed by relativistic expansion, we also find very little cosmological evolution in the intrinsic variability timescales of distant quasars.

Rotational Kinematics in the Globular Cluster System of M31: Insights from Bayesian Inference

As ancient stellar systems, globular clusters (GCs) offer valuable insights into the dynamical histories of large galaxies. Previous studies of GC populations in the inner and outer regions of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) have revealed intriguing subpopulations with distinct kinematic properties. Here, we build upon earlier studies by employing Bayesian modelling to investigate the kinematics of the combined inner and outer GC populations of M31. Given the heterogeneous nature of the data, we examine subpopulations defined by GCs' metallicity and by associations with substructure, in order to characterise possible relationships between the inner and outer GC populations. We find that lower-metallicity GCs and those linked to substructures exhibit a common, more rapid rotation, whose alignment is distinct from that of higher-metallicity and non-substructure GCs. Furthermore, the higher-metallicity GCs rotate in alignment with Andromeda's stellar disk. These pronounced kinematic differences reinforce the idea that different subgroups of GCs were accreted to M31 at distinct epochs, shedding light on the complex assembly history of the galaxy.

PathFound: An Agentic Multimodal Model Activating Evidence-seeking Pathological Diagnosis

Recent pathological foundation models have substantially advanced visual representation learning and multimodal interaction. However, most models still rely on a static inference paradigm in which whole-slide images are processed once to produce predictions, without reassessment or targeted evidence acquisition under ambiguous diagnoses. This contrasts with clinical diagnostic workflows that refine hypotheses through repeated slide observations and further examination requests. We propose PathFound, an agentic multimodal model designed to support evidence-seeking inference in pathological diagnosis. PathFound integrates the power of pathological visual foundation models, vision-language models, and reasoning models trained with reinforcement learning to perform proactive information acquisition and diagnosis refinement by progressing through the initial diagnosis, evidence-seeking, and final decision stages. Across several large multimodal models, adopting this strategy consistently improves diagnostic accuracy, indicating the effectiveness of evidence-seeking workflows in computational pathology. Among these models, PathFound achieves state-of-the-art diagnostic performance across diverse clinical scenarios and demonstrates strong potential to discover subtle details, such as nuclear features and local invasions.

Existence of global solutions to the Fokas-Lenells equation with arbitrary spectral singularities

We establish the global existence of solutions to the Fokas-Lenells equation for any initial data in a weighted Sobolev space $H^{3}(\mathbb{R})\cap H^{2,1}(\mathbb{R})$.This result removes all spectral restrictions on the initial data required in our previous work. The proof primarily relies on the inverse scattering transform formulated as new Riemann-Hilbert problems and Zhou's $L^{2}$-Sobolev bijectivity theory.

Observations of AGN-driven feedback: dynamics and ionization of the filaments in M87

We present a comprehensive kinematic and ionization analysis of the warm ionized filaments ($10^4$ K) in M87, the central galaxy of the Virgo cluster, using new integral field spectroscopy from MEGARA (GTC) and SITELLE (CFHT). MEGARA targets the southeastern (SE) filaments (3 kpc from the nucleus), coincident with the only known molecular gas clump, and the far eastern (FE) filament (15 kpc), spatially isolated within an old radio lobe. SITELLE fully maps the filaments, offering the first complete views of their kinematics and excitation. Combined with archival ALMA, MUSE and Chandra data, these observations offer a multi-phase view of gas dynamics. The filaments display complex motions inconsistent with simple rotation. Velocity structure functions (VSFs) of the warm and cold gas in the central and SE filaments show consistent steep slopes (2/3) and flattening on small scales of a few hundred parsecs, possibly suggesting energy injection from Type Ia supernovae, though interpretation is method-limited. The FE filament shows a lower VSF amplitude, suggesting less active driving. ALMA CO emission is co-spatial and kinematically aligned with the ionized gas, the latter showing broader velocity dispersions. Ionization diagnostics indicate AGN-related processes (e.g., shocks) dominate, with higher-energy excitation near the radio lobes and lower-energy fossil feedback signatures in the FE filament. Finally, the filaments follow the same strong H$α$-X-ray surface brightness correlation seen in other clusters, supporting local thermal coupling between phases. However, the FE filament deviates from this trend, possibly due to uplift from past AGN outbursts or limitations in the analysis method.

Guiding Perception-Reasoning Closer to Human in Blind Image Quality Assessment

Humans assess image quality through a perception-reasoning cascade, integrating sensory cues with implicit reasoning to form self-consistent judgments. In this work, we investigate how a model can acquire both human-like and self-consistent reasoning capability for blind image quality assessment (BIQA). We first collect human evaluation data that capture several aspects of human perception-reasoning pipeline. Then, we adopt reinforcement learning, using human annotations as reward signals to guide the model toward human-like perception and reasoning. To enable the model to internalize self-consistent reasoning capability, we design a reward that drives the model to infer the image quality purely from self-generated descriptions. Empirically, our approach achieves score prediction performance comparable to state-of-the-art BIQA systems under general metrics, including Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients. In addition to the rating score, we assess human-model alignment using ROUGE-1 to measure the similarity between model-generated and human perception-reasoning chains. On over 1,000 human-annotated samples, our model reaches a ROUGE-1 score of 0.512 (cf. 0.443 for baseline), indicating substantial coverage of human explanations and marking a step toward human-like interpretable reasoning in BIQA.

Enhanced Detection of Rotational Doppler Shift from Sunlight

The rotational Doppler effect, for which the frequency shift is proportional to the light's orbital angular momentum $\ell$ and the object's rotational speed ($Δf \propto\ell Ω$), has proven to be a powerful tool for detecting the speed of rotational objects. However, the current detection technique is mainly based on coherent laser sources. There is scarce mention of using partially coherent light sources, let alone sunlight. In this work, we collect sunlight and direct it into the laboratory, where it is modulated into a partially coherent probing source and then realize rotational Doppler shift detection. Our study reveals that in low-light conditions, where background noise is stronger than the signal, the superposition of rotational Doppler signals at different wavelengths can significantly enhance the signal strength and improve the signal-to-noise ratio, enabling accurate measurement of the rotational speed of objects. Our research provides experimental validation for the application of sunlight in rotational Doppler shift detection, demonstrating its potential value for passive remote sensing.

Structure and positivity of linear maps preserving covariance under unitary evolution

Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a complex finite-dimensional or infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space, $\mathcal{B(H)}$ and $\mathcal{T(H)}$ be the Banach spaces of all bounded linear operators and of all trace class operators on $\mathcal{H},$ respectively. In this paper, we give a concrete description of the linear maps $Φ:\mathcal{T(H)}\rightarrow \mathcal{B(H\otimes H)}$ that are continuous relative to the norm topology and covariance under unitary evolution (i.e., $Φ(UXU^*)=(U\otimes U)Φ(X)(U^*\otimes U^*)$ for all $X\in\mathcal{T(H)}$ and unitary operators $U\in\mathcal{B(H)}).$ Using this, we obtain the equivalent conditions for this class of maps to be self-adjoint or positive. As a corollary, we get that the virtual broadcasting map $\mathcal{B}_{vb}:\mathcal{T(H)}\rightarrow \mathcal{B(H\otimes H)}$ with the form $\mathcal{B}_{vb}(X)=\frac{ 1}{2}[S(I\otimes X)+S(X\otimes I)]$ is uniquely determined by three conditions: covariance under unitary evolution, invariance under permutation of the copies and consistency with classical broadcasting, where $S\in\mathcal{B(H\otimes H)}$ is the swap operator. Moreover, the linear maps $Ψ:\mathcal{B(H)}\rightarrow \mathcal{B(H\otimes H)}$ that are continuous relative to the $W^*$-topology and covariance under unitary evolution are also characterized.

Capacitive Touchscreens at Risk: Recovering Handwritten Trajectory on Smartphone via Electromagnetic Emanations

This paper reveals and exploits a critical security vulnerability: the electromagnetic (EM) side channel of capacitive touchscreens leaks sufficient information to recover fine-grained, continuous handwriting trajectories. We present Touchscreen Electromagnetic Side-channel Leakage Attack (TESLA), a non-contact attack framework that captures EM signals generated during on-screen writing and regresses them into two-dimensional (2D) handwriting trajectories in real time. Extensive evaluations across a variety of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) smartphones show that TESLA achieves 77% character recognition accuracy and a Jaccard index of 0.74, demonstrating its capability to recover highly recognizable motion trajectories that closely resemble the original handwriting under realistic attack conditions.
