Strange metal without magnetic criticality

A fundamental challenge to our current understanding of metals is the frequent observation of qualitative departures from Fermi liquid behavior. The standard view attributes such non-Fermi liquid phenomena to the scattering of electrons off quantum critical fluctuations of an underlying order parameter. While the possibility of non-Fermi liquid behavior isolated from the border of magnetism has long been speculated, no experimental confirmation has been made. Here we report on the observation of a strange metal region in the absence of a magnetic instability in an ultrapure single crystal. In particular, we show that the heavy fermion superconductor $β$-YbAlB$_4$ forms a possible phase with strange metallic behavior across an extensive pressure regime, distinctly separated from a high-pressure magnetic quantum phase transition by a Fermi liquid phase.

Pressure-induced Superconductivity in the Iron-based Ladder Material BaFe2S3

All the iron-based superconductors identified to date share a square lattice composed of Fe atoms as a common feature, despite having different crystal structures. In copper-based materials, the superconducting phase emerges not only in square lattice structures but also in ladder structures. Yet iron-based superconductors without a square lattice motif have not been found despite being actively sought out. Here, we report the discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in the iron-based spin-ladder material BaFe2S3, a Mott insulator with striped-type magnetic ordering below ~120 K. On the application of pressure this compound exhibits a metal-insulator transition at about 11 GPa, followed by the appearance of superconductivity below Tc = 14 K, right after the onset of the metallic phase. Our findings indicate that iron-based ladder compounds represent promising material platforms, in particular for studying the fundamentals of iron-based superconductivity.

Anomalous Quantum Transport Properties in Semimetallic Black Phosphorus

Magnetoresistance in single crystals of black phosphorus is studied at ambient and hydrostatic pressures. In the semiconducting states at pressures below 0.71 GPa, the magnetoresistance shows periodic oscillations, which can be ascribed to the magneto-phonon resonance that is characteristic of high mobility semiconductors. In the metallic state above 1.64 GPa, the both transverse and longitudinal magnetoresistance show titanic increase with exhibiting superposed Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. The observed small Fermi surfaces, high mobilities and light effective masses of carriers in semimetallic black phosphorus are comparable to those in the representative elemental semimetals of bismuth and graphite.

Frequency Extension to THz Range in High Pressure ESR System and Its Application to Shastry-Sutherland Model Compound SrCu$_{2}$(BO$_{3}$)$_{2}$

We have made a survey of ceramics for the inner parts of the transmission-type pressure cell to achieve the high pressure and the high transmission in THz range. By using the optimal combination of ZrO$_{2}$-based ceramic and Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ ceramic, we have succeeded in obtaining the pressure up to 1.5 GPa and the frequency region up to 700 GHz simultaneously. We show the high-pressure ESR results of Shastry-Sutherland compound SrCu$_{2}$(BO$_{3}$)$_{2}$ as an application. We observed the direct ESR transition modes between the singlet ground state and the triplet excited states up to the pressure of 1.51 GPa successfully, and obtained the precise pressure dependence of the gap energy. The gap energy is directly proved to be suppressed by the pressure. Moreover, we found that the system approaches the quantum critical point with pressure by comparing the obtained data with the theory. This result also shows the usefulness of high-pressure ESR measurement in THz region to study quantum spin systems.

Temperature and composition phase diagram in the iron-based ladder compounds Ba1-xCsxFe2Se3

We investigated the iron-based ladder compounds (Ba,Cs)Fe$_2$Se$_3$. Their parent compounds, BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ and CsFe$_2$Se$_3$, have different space groups, formal valences of Fe and magnetic structures. Electrical resistivity, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, X-ray diffraction and powder neutron diffraction measurements were conducted to obtain temperature and composition phase diagram of this system. Block magnetism observed in BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ is drastically suppressed with Cs doping. In contrast, stripe magnetism observed in CsFe$_2$Se$_3$ is not so fragile against Ba doping. New type of magnetic structure appears in intermediate compositions, which is similar to stripe magnetism of CsFe$_2$Se$_3$, but inter-ladder spin configuration is different. Intermediate compounds show insulating behavior, nevertheless finite $T$-linear contribution in specific heat was obtained at low temperatures.

High Pressure Measurements of the Resistivity of $β$-YbAlB$_4$

The electric resistivity $ρ(T)$ under hydrostatic pressure up to 8 GPa was measured above 2 K using a high-quality single crystal of the Yb-based heavy fermion system $β$-YbAlB$_4$. We found pressure-induced magnetic ordering above the critical pressure $P_{\rm c} \approx $ 2.4 GPa. This phase transition temperature $T_M$ is enhanced with pressure and reaches 30 K at a pressure of 8 GPa, which is the highest transition temperature for the Yb-based heavy fermion compounds. In contrast, the resistivity is insensitive to pressure below $P_c$ and exhibits the $T$-linear behavior in the temperature range between 2 and 20 K. Our results indicate that quantum criticality for $β$-YbAlB$_4$ is also located near $P_{\rm c}$ in addition to the ambient pressure.

Superconductivity in the vicinity of antiferromagnetic order in CrAs

One of the common features of unconventional, magnetically mediated superconductivity as found in the heavy-fermions, high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) cuprates, and iron pnictides superconductors is that the superconductivity emerges in the vicinity of long-range antiferromagnetically ordered state.[1] In addition to doping charge carriers, the application of external physical pressure has been taken as an effective and clean approach to induce the unconventional superconductivity near a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP).[2,3] Superconductivity has been observed in a majority of 3d transition-metal compounds,[4-9] except for the Cr- and Mn-based compounds in the sense that the low-lying states near Fermi level are dominated by their 3d electrons. Herein, we report on the discovery of superconductivity on the verge of antiferromagnetic order in CrAs via the application of external high pressure. Bulk superconductivity with Tc ~ 2 K emerges at the critical pressure Pc ~ 8 kbar, where the first-order antiferromagnetic transition at TN = 265 K under ambient pressure is completely suppressed. Abnormal normal-state properties associated with a magnetic QCP have been observed nearby Pc. The close proximity of superconductivity to an antiferromagnetic order suggests an unconventional pairing mechanism for the superconducting state of CrAs. The present finding opens a new avenue for searching novel superconductors in the Cr and other transitional-metal based systems.

AC Susceptibility of the Dipolar Spin Ice Dy2Ti2O7: Experiments and Monte Carlo Simulations

Experimental data of the frequency-dependent ac susceptibility for the dipolar spin ice Dy2Ti2O7 has been analyzed by Monte Carlo simulations on the basis of the single-spin-flip Metropolis algorithm. We have directly evaluated the ac susceptibility by applying an ac magnetic field. We found that the simulated behaviors reproduces the experimental behavior of the ac susceptibility in the temperature range from 0.6 to 1.0 K, where dilute magnetic monopoles diffusively move. The conversion factor from simulation time to real time, i.e., the rate of hopping of monopoles to nearest-neighbor sites, strongly depends on temperature.

Investigation of the Superconducting Gap Structure in SrFe$_2$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_2$ by Magnetic Penetration Depth and Flux Flow Resistivity Analysis

We measured the microwave surface impedances and obtained the superfluid density and flux flow resistivity in single crystals of a phosphor-doped iron-based superconductor SrFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$ single crystals ($x=0.30$, $T_c=25 \mathrm{K}$). At low temperatures, the superfluid density, $n_s (T)/n_s(0)$, obeys a power law, $n_s (T)/n_s (0)=1-C(T/T_c)^n$, with a fractional exponent of $n=1.5$-1.6. The flux flow resistivity was significantly enhanced at low magnetic fields. These features are consistent with the presences of both a gap with line nodes and nodeless gaps with a deep minimum. The remarkable difference observed in the superconducting gap structure between SrFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$ and BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$ in our experiments is important for clarifying the mechanism of iron-based superconductivity.

Novel weak-ferromagnetic metallic state in heavily doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Mn$_{2}$As$_{2}$

Heavily doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Mn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($x$=0.19 and 0.26) single crystals were successfully grown, and investigated by the measurements of resistivity and anisotropic magnetic susceptibility. In contrast to the antiferromagnetic insulating ground state of the undoped BaMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$, the K-doped crystals show metallic conduction with weak ferromagnetism below $\sim$50 K and Curie-Weiss-like in-plane magnetic susceptibility above $\sim$50 K. Under high pressures up to 6 GPa, the low-temperature metallicity changes into a state characterized by a Kondo-like resistivity minimum without any signature of superconductivity above 2.5 K. Electronic structure calculations for $x$=0.25 using $2\times2\times1$ supercell reproduce the hole-doped metallic state. The density of states at Fermi energy have significant As 4$p$ components, suggesting that the 4$p$ holes are mainly responsible for the metallic conduction. Our results suggest that the interplay between itinerant 4$p$ holes and local 3$d$ moments is mostly responsible for the novel metallic state.

Block magnetism coupled with local distortion in the iron-based spin-ladder compound BaFe2Se3

Magnetism in the insulating BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ was examined through susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity and neutron diffraction measurements. After formation of a short-range magnetic correlation, a long-range ordering was observed below $T_{\rm N}\sim 255$ K. The transition is obscured by bulk properties. Magnetic moments ($\parallel a$) are arranged to form a Fe$_4$ ferromagnetic unit, and each Fe$_4$ stacks antiferromagnetically. This block magnetism is of the third type among magnetic structures of ferrous materials. The magnetic ordering drives unusually large distortion via magnetoelastic coupling.

Pressure induced renormalization of energy scales in the unconventional superconductor FeTe0.6Se0.4

We have carried out a pressure study of the unconventional superconductor FeTe0.6Se0.4 up to 1.5 GPa by neutron scattering, resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. We have extracted the neutron spin resonance energy and the superconducting transition temperature as a function of applied pressure. Both increase with pressure up to a maximum at ~1.3 GPa. This analogous qualitative behavior is evidence for a correlation between these two fundamental parameters of unconventional superconductivity. However, Tc and the resonance energy do not scale linearly and thus a simple relationship between these energies does not exist even in a single sample. The renormalization of the resonance energy relative to the transition temperature is here attributed to an increased hybridization. The present results appear to be consistent with a pressure-induced weakening of the coupling strength associated with the fundamental pairing mechanism.

Crossover from commensurate to incommensurate antiferromagnetism in stoichiometric NaFeAs revealed by single-crystal 23Na,75As-NMR experiments

We report results of 23Na and 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on a self-flux grown high-quality single crystal of stoichiometric NaFeAs. The NMR spectra revealed a tetragonal to twinned-orthorhombic structural phase transition at T_O = 57 K and an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition at T_AF = 45 K. The divergent behavior of nuclear relaxation rate near T_AF shows significant anisotropy, indicating that the critical slowing down of stripe-type AF fluctuations are strongly anisotropic in spin space. The NMR spectra at low enough temperatures consist of sharp peaks showing a commensurate stripe AF order with a small moment \sim 0.3 muB. However, the spectra just below T_AF exhibits highly asymmetric broadening pointing to an incommensurate modulation. The commensurate-incommensurate crossover in NaFeAs shows a certain similarity to the behavior of SrFe2As2 under high pressure.

Spin-Wave Spectrum in `Single-Domain' Magnetic Ground State of Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet CuFeO2

By means of neutron scattering measurements, we have investigated spin-wave excitation in a collinear four-sublattice (4SL) magnetic ground state of a triangular lattice antiferromagnet CuFeO2, which has been of recent interest as a strongly frustrated magnet, a spin-lattice coupled system and a multiferroic. To avoid mixing of spin-wave spectrum from magnetic domains having three different orientations reflecting trigonal symmetry of the crystal structure, we have applied uniaxial pressure on [1-10] direction of a single crystal CuFeO2. By elastic neutron scattering measurements, we have found that only 10 MPa of the uniaxial pressure results in almost 'single domain' state in the 4SL phase. We have thus performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements using the single domain sample, and have identified two distinct spin- wave branches. The dispersion relation of the upper spin-wave branch cannot be explained by the previous theoretical model [R. S. Fishman: J. Appl. Phys. 103 (2008) 07B109]. This implies the importance of the lattice degree of freedom in the spin-wave excitation in this system, because the previous calculation neglected the effect of the spin-driven lattice distortion in the 4SL phase. We have also discussed relationship between the present results and the recently discovered "electromagnon" excitation.

Magnetic ordering and dense Kondo behaviour in EuFe$_{2}$P$_{2}$

Ternary iron phosphide EuFe$_2$P$_2$ with ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type structure has been systematically studied by the measurements of crystal structure, magnetization, Mössbauer effect, transport properties and specific heat. The structural refinement result confirms no direct P-P covalent bonding. The Mössbauer spectra indicate no magnetic moment for the Fe atoms and, that the Eu ions are divalent in the whole temperatures, carrying local moments of $S$=7/2. The Eu$^{2+}$ spins order ferromagnetically at $T_C$=29.5 K, followed by a possible helimagnetic ordering below $T_{HM}$=26 K, where the Eu$^{2+}$ moments tilt a little from the c-axis. External magnetic field increases $T_C$ gradually, but suppresses $T_{HM}$ rapidly. (Magneto)resistivity data indicate characteristic dense Kondo behaviour above the Curie temperature. The result is discussed in terms of the interplay between intersite RKKY and intrasite Kondo interactions.

Microwave Surface Impedance Measurements of LiFeAs Single Crystals

We report results of microwave surface impedance measurements of LiFeAs single crystals. The in-plane penetration depth depends on temperature exponentially at low temperatures, which strongly suggests that this material has the nodeless superconducting gap. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density indicates that LiFeAs is a multi-gap superconductor with at least two isotropic gaps. In addtion, the real part of the microwave conductivity exhibits a large enhancement below $T_\mathrm{c}$, indicating that the quasi-particle relaxation time, $τ$, increases rapidly below $T_\mathrm{c}$. We believe that this enhancement is rather common to all superconductors where an inelastic scattering is dominant above $T_\mathrm{c}$, irrespective of the strength of the electron correlation.

Anisotropy of upper critical field in one-dimensional organic system, (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ under extremely high pressure

We have measured the temperature dependent resistivity of (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ to 7 GPa using a turnbuckle DAC (diamond anvil cell) and in magnetic field up to 5 T. Unlike many other organic conductors, a zero resistance was observed in the superconducting state even under high pressures. Superconductivity was observed over a range of $P$ = 4.18 GPa to 6.03 GPa and showed a peak $T_c$ of 2.25 K at 4.58 GPa. The temperature dependence of the upper critical magnetic field $H_{c2}(T)$ was determined via resistivity at $P$ = 4.58 GPa, for the intrachain ($a$), interchain ($b'$), and interlayer ($c^*$) configurations and the $H_{c2}(T)$ displays positive curvature without saturation, which may be originated by a FFLO state, for magnetic field along a-axis and $b'$-axis in T $\ge$ 0.5 K for $P$ = 4.48 GPa. This feature is suppressed with increasing pressure and the orbital pair breaking mechanism becomes dominant. The values of the Ginzberg-Landau coherence length for three different axes obtained from this work shows that (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ is an anisotropic three - dimensional superconductor.

Space efficient opposed-anvil high-pressure cell and its application to optical and NMR measurements up to 9 GPa

We have developed a new type of opposed-anvil high pressure cell with substantially improved space efficiency. The clamp cell and the gasket are made of non-magnetic Ni-Cr-Al alloy. Non-magnetic tungsten carbide (NMWC) is used for the anvils. The assembled cell with the dimension ϕ29mm \times 41mm is capable of generating pressure up to 9 GPa over a relatively large volume of 7 mm3. Our cell is particularly suitable for those experiments which require large sample space to achieve good signal-to-noise ratio, such as the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment. Argon is used as the pressure transmitting medium to obtain good hydrostaticity. The pressure was calibrated in situ by measuring the fluorescence from ruby through a transparent moissanite (6H-SiC) window. We have measured the pressure and temperature dependences of the 63Cu nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) frequency of Cu2O, the in-plane Knight shift of metallic tin, and the Knight shift of platinum. These quantities can be used as reliable manometers to determine the pressure values in situ during the NMR/NQR experiments up to 9 GPa.
