Universal dynamics of magnetic monopoles in two-dimensional kagomé ice

A magnetic monopole in spin ice is a novel quasiparticle excitation in condensed matter physics, and we found that the ac frequency dependent magnetic susceptibility $χ(ω)$ in the two-dimensional (2D) spin ice (so-called kagomé ice) of Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ shows a single scaling form. This behavior can be understood in terms of the dynamical scaling law for 2D Coulomb gas (CG) systems [Phys. Rev. B 90, 144428 (2014)], characterized by the charge correlation length $ξ(\propto1/\sqrt{ω_1})$, where $ω_{1}$ is a characteristic frequency proportional to the peak position of the imaginary part of $χ(ω)$. It is a generic behavior among a wide variety of models such as the vortex dynamics of 2D superconductors, 2D superfluids, classical XY magnets, and dynamics of melting of Wigner crystals.

Pressure induced multicriticality and electronic instability in quasi-kagome ferromagnet URhSn

We report an unconventional class of pressure induced quantum phase transition, possessing two bicritical points at 6.25 GPa in URhSn. This unique transformation accompanies a Fermi surface reconstruction, demarcating competing ordered phases suitably described with localized and itinerant description of the magnetic $5f$-electrons. Ferromagnetic fluctuations over a wide range of temperatures and pressures in the pressure-induced low temperature phase are evidenced by a robust $T^{5/3}$ temperature dependence of resistivity up to 11 GPa, which is a characteristic of elusive marginal Fermi-liquid state.

Coupled magnetic and structural phase transitions in the antiferromagnetic polar metal Pb2CoOsO6 under pressure

Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$ is a newly synthesized polar metal in which inversion symmetry is broken by the magnetic frustration in an antiferromagnetic ordering of Co and Os sublattices. The coupled magnetic and structural transition occurs at 45 K at ambient pressure. Here we perform transport measurements and first-principles calculations to study the pressure effects on the magnetic/structural coupled transition of Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$. Experimentally we monitor the resistivity anomaly at $T_N$ under various pressures up to 11 GPa in a cubic anvil cell apparatus. We find that $T_N$ determined from the resistivity anomaly first increases quickly with pressure in a large slope of $dT_N/dP$ = +6.8(8) K/GPa for $P < 4$ GPa, and then increases with a much reduced slope of 1.8(4) K/GPa above 4 GPa. Our first-principles calculations suggest that the observed discontinuity of $dT_N/dP$ around 4 GPa may be attributed to the vanishing of Os magnetic moment under pressure. Pressure substantially reduces the Os moment and completely suppresses it above a critical value, which relieves the magnetic frustration in the antiferromagnetic ordering of Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$. The Co and Os polar distortions decrease with the increasing pressure and simultaneously vanish at the critical pressure. Therefore above the critical pressure a new centrosymmetric antiferromagnetic state emerges in Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$, distinct from the one under ambient pressure, thus showing a discontinuity in $dT_N/dP$.

Magneto-transport properties of tellurium under extreme conditions

This study investigates the transport properties of a chiral elemental semiconductor tellurium (Te) under magnetic fields and pressure. Application of hydrostatic pressure reduces the resistivity of Te, while its temperature dependence remains semiconducting up to 4 GPa, contrary to recent theoretical and experimental studies. Application of higher pressure causes structural as well as semiconductor--metal transitions. The resulting metallic phase above 4 GPa exhibits superconductivity at 2 K along with a noticeable linear magnetoresistance effect. On the other hand, at ambient pressure, we identified metallic surface states on the as-cleaved (10$\bar{1}$0) surfaces of Te. The nature of these metallic surface states has been systematically studied by analyzing quantum oscillations observed in high magnetic fields. We clarify that a well-defined metallic surface state exists not only on chemically etched samples that were previously reported, but also on as-cleaved ones.

New diversity form of ice polymorphism: Discovery of second hydrogen ordered phase of ice VI

More than 20 crystalline and amorphous phases have been reported for ice so far. This extraordinary polymorphism of ice arises from the geometric flexibility of hydrogen bonds and hydrogen ordering, and makes ice a unique presence with its universality in the wide fields of material and earth and planetary science. A prominent unsolved question concerning the diversity is whether a hydrogen-disordered phase of ice transforms into only one hydrogen-ordered phase, as inferred from the current phase diagram of ice, although its possible hydrogen configurations have close energies. Recent experiments on a high-pressure hydrogen-disordered phase, ice VI, revealed an unknown hydrogen-ordered form ($β$-XV) besides the known ordered phase, ice XV, which would be a counterexample of the question. However, due to lack of experimental evidence, it has not been clarified whether $β$-XV is a distinct crystalline phase. Herein we report a second hydrogen-ordered phase for ice VI, ice XIX, unambiguously demonstrated by neutron diffraction measurements. The phase boundary between ice VI and ice XIX shows that ice VI contracts upon the hydrogen ordering, which thermodynamically stabilizes ice XIX in higher-pressure region than ice XV because of its smaller volume than ice XV. The pressure-driven phase competition between hydrogen-ordered phases, also theoretically suggested in other ice polymorphs, can induce hydrogen ordering of ice in different manners. Thus, this study demonstrates a hitherto undiscovered polymorphism of ice.

Quantum Criticality of Valence Transition for the Unique Electronic State of Antiferromagnetic Compound EuCu2Ge2

The effect of pressure on the unique electronic state of the antiferromagnetic (AF) compound EuCu2Ge2 has been measured in a wide temperature range from 10 mK to 300 K by electrical resistivity measurements up to 10 GPa. The Neel temperature of TN = 15 K at ambient pressure increases monotonically with increasing pressure and becomes a maximum of TN = 27 K at 6.2 GPa but suddenly drops to zero at Pc = 6.5 GPa, suggesting the quantum critical point (QCP) of the valence transition of Eu from a nearly divalent state to that with trivalent weight. The rhomag0 and A values obtained from the low-temperature electrical resistivity based on the Fermi liquid relation of rhomag = rhomag0 + AT^2 exhibit huge and sharp peaks around Pc. The exponent n obtained from the power law dependence rhomag = rhomag0 + BT^n is clearly less than 1.5 at P = Pc = 6. 5 GPa, which is expected at the AF-QCP. These results indicate that Pc coincides with Pv, corresponding to the quantum criticality of the valence transition pressure Pv. The electronic specific heat coefficient, estimated from the generalized Kadowaki-Woods relation, is about 510 mJ/mol K^2 around Pc, suggesting the formation of a heavy-fermion state.

Magnetoelectric Effect in the Antiferromagnetic Ordered State of Ce$_{3}$TiBi$_{5}$ with Ce Zig-Zag Chains

In this study, we investigate the magnetoelectric (ME) effect of the newly discovered antiferromagnetic (AFM) compound Ce$_{3}$TiBi$_{5}$ with a hexagonal structure (space group $P6_{3}$/$mcm$). In this system, Ce ions form zig-zag chains that extend along the $c$-axis. We focus on the lack of the local inversion symmetry at the Ce site, although the crystal structure has an inversion center. A theoretical study has predicted that magnetization can be induced by an electric current in the AFM ordering on the zig-zag chain. We conducted magnetization measurements on Ce$_{3}$TiBi$_{5}$ under an applied constant electric current and a static magnetic field around the AFM ordering temperature of $T_{\rm N}$ = 5.0 K. We successfully observed of the current-induced magnetization below $T_{\rm N}$. The magnitude of the current-induced magnetization has a linear electric current dependence and exhibits no magnetic field dependence. This behavior is consistent with the theoretical prediction of the ME effect in the ferrotoroidal ordered state.

Superconductivity of Electron-Doped NdOBiS2 by Substitution of Mixed-Valence Ce ions

Superconductivity is achieved in Nd1-xCexOBiS2 via electron doping using mixed-valence Ce ions. Single crystals with x = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 are generated using a CsCl flux method. Plate-like single crystals with dimensions of 0.8 0.8 0.2 mm3 were obtained. The magnetic susceptibility chi(T) indicates large diamagnetism, and the electrical resistivity rho(T) indicates zero resistivity. The maximum value of Tc is observed at 4.7 K in Nd0.8Ce0.2OBiS2 from chi(T). From the rho(T) measurements taken in several magnetic fields, the upper critical field mu0Hc2(0) is estimated to be about 12 and 0.34 T for the ab- and c-planes, respectively. We redetermined mu0Hc2(0) of NdO0.7F0.3BiS2, as about 35 and 0.78 T for the ab- and c-planes, respectively. The anisotropic parameter is estimated to be about 35 for Nd0.7Ce0.3OBiS2 and 45 for NdO0.7F0.3BiS2. The mu0Hc2(0) of Nd0.7Ce0.3OBiS2 is approximately two times smaller than that of NdO0.7F0.3BiS2, although the difference of Gamma is approximately 10.

Novel Excitations near Quantum Criticality in Geometrically Frustrated Antiferromagnet CsFeCl$_{3}$

Investigation of materials that exhibit quantum phase transition provides valuable insights into fundamental problems in physics. We present neutron scattering under pressure in a triangular-lattice antiferromagnet which has a quantum disorder in the low-pressure phase and a noncollinear structure in the high-pressure phase. The neutron spectrum continuously evolves through the critical pressure; a single mode in the disordered state becomes soft with the pressure, and it splits into gapless and gapped modes in the ordered phase. Extended spin-wave theory reveals that the longitudinal and transverse fluctuations of spins are hybridized in the modes because of the noncollinearity, and novel magnetic excitations are formed. We report a new hybridization of the phase and amplitude fluctuations of the order parameter in a spontaneously symmetry-broken state.

Pressure induced Superconductivity and location of Fermi energy at Dirac point in BiSbTe3

We have grown single-crystal BiSbTe3 3D TI sample and studied structural, TE as well as pressure dependent magneto-transport properties. Large positive Seebeck coefficient confirmed the p-type nature of BiSbTe3, which is consistent with Hall measurement. We have also studied the electronic band structure using Laser-based ARPES, which revealed the existence of a Dirac-cone like metallic surface state in BiSbTe3 with a Dirac Point situated exactly at the Fermi level. Additionally, superconductivity emerges under pressure of 8 GPa with a critical temperature of ~2.5 K. With further increase of pressure, the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) increases and at 14 GPa it shows the maximum Tc (~3.3 K).

$^{77}$Se-NMR Study under Pressure on 12%-S Doped FeSe

The 12%-S doped FeSe system has a high Tc of 30 K at a pressure of 3.0 GPa. We have successfully investigated its microscopic properties for the first time via $^{77}$Se-NMR measurements under pressure. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuations at the optimal pressure (~3 GPa) exhibited unexpected suppression compared with the AFM fluctuations at ambient pressure, even though the optimal pressure is close to the phase boundary of the AFM phase induced at the high-pressure region. In addition, we revealed that the SC phase at an applied field of 6.02 T exhibited a remarkable double-dome structure in the pressure-temperature phase diagram, unlike the SC phase at zero field.

Direct Observation of the Quantum Phase Transition of SrCu$_{2}$(BO$_{3}$)$_{2}$ by High-Pressure and Terahertz Electron Spin Resonance

High-pressure and high-field electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements have been performed on a single crystal of the orthogonal-dimer spin system SrCu$_{2}$(BO$_{3}$)$_{2}$. With frequencies below 1 THz, ESR signals associated with transitions from the singlet ground state to the one-triplet excited states and the two-triplet bound state were observed at pressures up to 2.1 GPa. We obtained directly the pressure dependence of the gap energies, finding a clear first-order phase transition at $P_{c}=1.85\pm0.05$ GPa. By comparing this pressure dependence with the calculated excitation energies obtained from an exact diagonalization, we determined the precise pressure dependence for inter- ($J'$) and intra-dimer ($J$) exchange interactions considering the Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction. Thus this system undergoes a first-order quantum phase transition from the dimer singlet phase to a plaquette singlet phase above the ratio $(J'/J)_{c}=0.660\pm0.003$.

Two-carrier analyses of the transport properties of black phosphorus under pressure

We report on the electronic transport properties of black phosphorus and analyze them using a two-carrier model in a wide range of pressure up to 2.5 GPa. In semiconducting state at 0.29 GPa, the remarkable non-linear behavior in the Hall resistance is reasonably reproduced by assuming the coexistence of two kinds of hole with different densities and mobilities. On the other hand, two-carrier analyses of the magnetotransport properties above 1.01 GPa suggest the coexistence of high mobility electron and hole carriers that have almost the same densities, i.e., nearly compensated semimetallic nature of black phosphorus. In the semimetallic state, analyses of both the two-carrier model and quantum oscillations indicate a systematic increase in the carrier densities as pressure increases. An observed sign inversion of Hall resistivity at low magnetic fields suggests the existence of high mobility electrons (\sim105 cm2 V-1 s-1) that is roughly ten times larger than that of holes, in the semimetallic black phosphorus. We conclude that the extremely large positive magnetoresistance that has been observed in semimetallic state cannot be reproduced by a conventional two-carrier model.

Effect of Pressure on Magnetism of UIrGe

We report the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the electronic state of the antiferromagnet UIrGe, which is isostructural and isoelectronic with the ferromagnetic superconductors UCoGe and URhGe. The Neel temperature decreases with increasing pressure. We constructed a p-T phase diagram and estimated the critical pressure pc, where the antiferromagnetism vanishes, as 12 GPa. The antiferromagnetic/paramagnetic transition appears to be first order.

Evidence for pressure-induced node-pair annihilation in Cd3As2

As an intermediate state in the topological phase diagram, Dirac semimetals are of particular interest as a platform for studying topological phase transitions under external modulations. Despite a growing theoretical interest in this topic, it remains a substantial challenge to experimentally tune the system across topological phase transitions. Here, we investigate the Fermi surface evolution of Cd3As2 under high pressure through magnetotransport. A sudden change in Berry phase occurs at 1.3 GPa along with the unanticipated shrinkage of the Fermi surface, which occurs well below the structure transition point (~2.5 GPa). High pressure X-ray diffraction also reveals an anisotropic compression of the Cd3As2 lattice around a similar pressure. Corroborated by the first-principles calculations we show that an axial compression will shift the Dirac nodes towards the Brillouin zone center and eventually introduces a finite energy gap. The ability to tune the node position, a vital parameter of Dirac semimetals, can have dramatic impacts on the corresponding topological properties such as the Fermi arc surface states and the chiral anomaly. Our study demonstrates axial compression as an efficient approach for manipulating the band topology and exploring the critical phenomena near the topological phase transition in Cd3As2.

Pressure-Induced Metallization in Iron-Based Ladder Compounds Ba$_{1-x}$Cs$_x$Fe$_2$Se$_3$

Electrical resistivity measurements have been performed on the iron-based ladder compounds Ba$_{1-x}$Cs$_x$Fe$_2$Se$_3$ ($x$ = 0, 0.25, 0.65, and 1) under high pressure. A cubic anvil press was used up to 8.0 GPa, whereas further higher pressure was applied using a diamond anvil cell up to 30.0 GPa. Metallic behavior of the electrical conductivity was confirmed in the $x$ = 0.25 and 0.65 samples for pressures greater than 11.3 and 14.4 GPa, respectively, with the low-temperature $\log T$ upturn being consistent with weak localization of 2D electrons due to random potential. At pressures higher than 23.8 GPa, three-dimensional Fermi-liquid-like behavior was observed in the latter sample. No metallic conductivity was observed in the parent compounds BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ ($x $ = 0) up to 30.0 GPa and CsFe$_2$Se$_3$ ($x$ = 1) up to 17.0 GPa. The present results indicate that the origins of the insulating ground states in the parent and intermediate compounds are intrinsically different; the former is a Mott insulator, whereas the latter is an Anderson insulator owing to the random substitution of Cs for Ba.

Pressure-induced magnetic transition exceeding 30 K in the Yb-based heavy fermion superconductor $β$-YbAlB$_4$

Measurements of the electric resistivity $ρ(T)$ under pressure up to 8 GPa were performed on high-quality single-crystals of the Yb-based heavy fermion system $β$-YbAlB$_4$ in the temperature range $2<T<$ 300 K. In the resistivity data, we observed pressure-induced magnetic ordering above the critical pressure $P_{\rm c} \sim$ 2 GPa. Clear difference in the phase diagram under pressure using two types of pressure mediums indicates that the transition temperature may be further enhanced under application of uniaxial pressure. With pressure, this phase transition temperature $T_{\rm M}$ is enhanced reaching 32 K at 8 GPa, which is the highest transition temperature so far recorded for the Yb-based heavy fermion compounds. The power-law exponent $α$ in $ρ=ρ_0+ AT^α$ below $T_{\rm M}$ gradually changes from 3/2 to 5/2 with increasing pressure from 2 to 8 GPa. In contrast, the resistivity exhibits a $T$-linear behavior in the temperature range 2 $\le T \le$ 20 K and is insensitive to pressure below $P_{\rm c}$. In this pressure regime, the magnetization is also nearly independent of pressure and shows no anomaly above 2 K. Our results indicate that a quantum critical point for $β$-YbAlB$_4$ is also located near $P_{\rm c}$ in addition to the strange metal region near the ambient pressure.

The magnetic precursor of the pressure-induced superconductivity in Fe-ladder compound

The pressure effects on the antiferromagentic orders in iron-based ladder compounds CsFe$_2$Se$_3$ and BaFe$_2$S$_3$ have been studied using neutron diffraction. With identical crystal structure and similar magnetic structures, the two compounds exhibit highly contrasting magnetic behaviors under moderate external pressures. In CsFe$_2$Se$_3$ the ladders are brought much closer to each other by pressure, but the stripe-type magnetic order shows no observable change. In contrast, the stripe order in BaFe$_2$S$_3$, undergoes a quantum phase transition where an abrupt increase of N$\acute{e}$el temperature by more than 50$\%$ occurs at about 1 GPa, accompanied by a jump in the ordered moment. With its spin structure unchanged, BaFe$_2$S$_3$ enters an enhanced magnetic phase that bears the characteristics of an orbital selective Mott phase, which is the true neighbor of superconductivity emerging at higher pressures.
