Decoding Nonbinary LDPC Codes via Proximal-ADMM Approach (include convergence proofs)

In this paper, we focus on decoding nonbinary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes in Galois fields of characteristic two via the proximal alternating direction method of multipliers (proximal-ADMM). By exploiting Flanagan/Constant-Weighting embedding techniques and the decomposition technique based on three-variables parity-check equations, two efficient proximal-ADMM decoders for nonbinary LDPC codes are proposed. We show that both of them are theoretically guaranteed convergent to some stationary point of the decoding model and either of their computational complexities in each proximal-ADMM iteration scales linearly with LDPC code's length and the size of the considered Galois field. Moreover, the decoder based on the Constant-Weight embedding technique satisfies the favorable property of codeword symmetry. Simulation results demonstrate their effectiveness in comparison with state-of-the-art LDPC decoders.

Community-based Layerwise Distributed Training of Graph Convolutional Networks

The Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) has been successfully applied to many graph-based applications. Training a large-scale GCN model, however, is still challenging: Due to the node dependency and layer dependency of the GCN architecture, a huge amount of computational time and memory is required in the training process. In this paper, we propose a parallel and distributed GCN training algorithm based on the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) to tackle the two challenges simultaneously. We first split GCN layers into independent blocks to achieve layer parallelism. Furthermore, we reduce node dependency by dividing the graph into several dense communities such that each of them can be trained with an agent in parallel. Finally, we provide solutions for all subproblems in the community-based ADMM algorithm. Preliminary results demonstrate that our proposed community-based ADMM training algorithm can lead to more than triple speedup while achieving the best performance compared with state-of-the-art methods.

Efficient QAM Signal Detector for Massive MIMO Systems via PS-ADMM Approach

In this paper, we design an efficient quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signal detector for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems via the penalty-sharing alternating direction method of multipliers (PS-ADMM). Its main content is as follows: first, we formulate QAM-MIMO detection as a maximum-likelihood optimization problem with bound relaxation constraints. Decomposing QAM signals into a sum of multiple binary variables and exploiting introduced binary variables as penalty functions, we transform the detection optimization model to a non-convex sharing problem; second, a customized ADMM algorithm is presented to solve the formulated non-convex optimization problem. In the implementation, all variables can be solved analytically and in parallel; third, it is proved that the proposed PS-ADMM algorithm converges under mild conditions. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Gate-tunable magnetoresistance in six-septuple-layer MnBi$_2$Te$_4$

The recently discovered antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ hosts a variety of exotic topological quantum phases such as the axion insulator and Chern insulator states. Here we report systematic gate voltage dependent magneto transport studies in six septuple-layer MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. In p-type carrier regime, we observe positive linear magnetoresistance when MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is polarized in the ferromagnetic state by an out-of-plane magnetic field. Whereas in n-type regime, distinct negative magnetoresistance behaviors are observed. The magnetoresistance in both regimes is highly robust against temperature even up to the Néel temperature. Within the antiferromagnetic state, the behavior of magnetoresistance exhibits a transition from negative to positive as applying a gate voltage. The boundaries between different magnetoresistance behaviors in the experimental phase diagram can be explicitly characterized by the gate-voltage-independent magnetic fields that denotes the processes of the spin-flop transition. The rich transport phenomena demonstrate the intricate interplay between topology, magnetism and dimensionality in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$.

Designing Binary Sequence Set with Optimized Correlation Properties via ADMM Approach

In this paper, we design low correlation binary sequences favorable in wireless communication and radar applications. First, we formulate the designing problem as a nonconvex combination optimization problem with flexible correlation interval; second, by relaxing constraints and introducing auxiliary variables, the original minimization problem is equivalent to a consensus continuous optimization problem; third, to achieve its good approximate solution efficiently, we propose the distributed executable algorithms based on alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM); fourth, we prove that the proposed ADMM algorithms can converge to some stationary point of the approximate problem. Moreover, the computational complexity analysis is considered. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed ADMM approaches outperform state-of-the-art ones in either computational cost or selection of correlation interval of the designed binary sequences.

Indexing Context-Sensitive Reachability

Many context-sensitive data flow analyses can be formulated as a variant of the all-pairs Dyck-CFL reachability problem, which, in general, is of sub-cubic time complexity and quadratic space complexity. Such high complexity significantly limits the scalability of context-sensitive data flow analysis and is not affordable for analyzing large-scale software. This paper presents \textsc{Flare}, a reduction from the CFL reachability problem to the conventional graph reachability problem for context-sensitive data flow analysis. This reduction allows us to benefit from recent advances in reachability indexing schemes, which often consume almost linear space for answering reachability queries in almost constant time. We have applied our reduction to a context-sensitive alias analysis and a context-sensitive information-flow analysis for C/C++ programs. Experimental results on standard benchmarks and open-source software demonstrate that we can achieve orders of magnitude speedup at the cost of only moderate space to store the indexes. The implementation of our approach is publicly available.

Magnetic-field-induced robust zero Hall plateau state in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ Chern insulator

The intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 provides an ideal platform for exploring exotic topological quantum phenomena. Recently, the Chern insulator and axion insulator phases have been realized in few-layer MnBi2Te4 devices at low magnetic field regime. However, the fate of MnBi2Te4 in high magnetic field has never been explored in experiment. In this work, we report transport studies of exfoliated MnBi2Te4 flakes in pulsed magnetic fields up to 61.5 T. In the high-field limit, the Chern insulator phase with Chern number C = -1 evolves into a robust zero Hall resistance plateau state. Nonlocal transport measurements and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the charge transport in the zero Hall plateau state is conducted by two counter-propagating edge states that arise from the combined effects of Landau levels and large Zeeman effect in strong magnetic fields. Our result demonstrates the intricate interplay among intrinsic magnetic order, external magnetic field, and nontrivial band topology in MnBi2Te4.

Model-Free Incremental Adaptive Dynamic Programming Based Approximate Robust Optimal Regulation

This paper presents a new formulation for model-free robust optimal regulation of continuous-time nonlinear systems. The proposed reinforcement learning based approach, referred to as incremental adaptive dynamic programming (IADP), exploits measured data to allow the design of the approximate optimal incremental control strategy, which stabilizes the controlled system incrementally under model uncertainties, environmental disturbances, and input saturation. By leveraging the time delay estimation (TDE) technique, we first exploit sensory data to reduce the requirement of a complete dynamics, where measured data are adopted to construct an incremental dynamics that reflects the system evolution in an incremental form. Then, the resulting incremental dynamics serves to design the approximate optimal incremental control strategy based on adaptive dynamic programming, which is implemented as a simplified single critic structure to get the approximate solution to the value function of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. Furthermore, for the critic artificial neural network, experience data are used to design an off-policy weight update law with guaranteed weight convergence. Rather importantly, to address the unintentionally introduced TDE error, we incorporate a TDE error bound related term into the cost function, whereby the TDE error is attenuated during the optimization process. The system stability proof and the weight convergence proof are provided. Numerical simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed IADP, especially regarding the reduced control energy expenditure and the enhanced robustness.

Large Transport Gap Modulation in Graphene via Electric Field Controlled Reversible Hydrogenation

Graphene is of interest in the development of next-generation electronics due to its high electron mobility, flexibility and stability. However, graphene transistors have poor on/off current ratios because of the absence of a bandgap. One approach to introduce an energy gap is to use hydrogenation reaction, which changes graphene into insulating graphane with sp3 bonding. Here we show that an electric field can be used to control conductor-to-insulator transitions in microscale graphene via a reversible electrochemical hydrogenation in an organic liquid electrolyte containing dissociative hydrogen ions. The fully hydrogenated graphene exhibits a lower limit sheet resistance of 200 Gohm/sq, resulting in graphene field-effect transistors with on/off current ratios of 10^8 at room temperature. The devices also exhibit high endurance, with up to one million switching cycles. Similar insulating behaviours are also observed in bilayer graphene, while trilayer graphene remains highly conductive after the hydrogenation. Changes in the graphene lattice, and the transformation from sp2 to sp3 hybridization, is confirmed by in-situ Raman spectroscopy, supported by first-principles calculations.

A Low-Complexity ADMM-based Massive MIMO Detectors via Deep Neural Networks

An alternate direction method of multipliers (ADMM)-based detectors can achieve good performance in both small and large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. However, due to the difficulty of choosing the optimal penalty parameters, their performance is limited. This paper presents a deep neural network (DNN)-based massive MIMO detection method which can overcome the above limitation. It exploits the unfolding technique and learns to estimate the penalty parameters. Additionally, a computationally cheaper detector is also proposed. The proposed methods can handle the higher-order modulation signals. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the performances of the proposed methods compared with the existing works.

Proximal-ADMM Decoder for Nonbinary LDPC Codes

In this paper, we develop an efficient decoder via the proximal alternating direction method of multipliers (proximal-ADMM) technique for nonbinary linear block codes in the Galois field. Its main contents are as follows: first, exploiting the decomposition technique based on the three-variables check equation, we formulate the maximum likelihood (ML) decoding problem approximately to a non-convex quadratic program; second, an efficient algorithm based on the proximal-ADMM technique is proposed to solve the formulated QP problem. Exploiting the QP problem's inherent structures, its variables can be updated in parallel; third, we prove that the proposed decoding algorithm can converge to some stationary point of the formulated QP problem. Moreover, we also show, for nonbinary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, its computational complexity in each proximal-ADMM iteration scales linearly with block length and the size of the considered Galois field. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed proximal-ADMM decoder outperforms state-of-the-art nonbinary LDPC decoders in terms of either error correction performance or computational complexity.

Robust axion insulator and Chern insulator phases in a two-dimensional antiferromagnetic topological insulator

The intricate interplay between nontrivial topology and magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) materials has led to the emergence of many novel phenomena and functionalities. An outstanding example is the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, which was realized in magnetically doped topological insulators (TIs) in the absence of magnetic field. Recently, the layered van der Waals compound MnBi2Te4 has been theoretically predicted and experimentally verified to be a TI with interlayer antiferromagnetic (AFM) order. It is a rare stoichiometric material with coexisting topology and magnetism, thus represents a perfect building block for complex topological-magnetic structures. Here we investigate the quantum transport behaviors of both bulk crystal and exfoliated MnBi2Te4 flakes in a field effect transistor geometry. In the 6 septuple layers (SLs) device tuned into the insulating regime, we observe a large longitudinal resistance and zero Hall plateau, which are characteristic of the axion insulator state. The robust axion insulator state occurs in zero magnetic field, over a wide magnetic field range, and at relatively high temperatures. Moreover, a moderate magnetic field drives a quantum phase transition from the axion insulator phase to a Chern insulator phase with zero longitudinal resistance and quantized Hall resistance h/e2 (h is the Plank constant and e is the elemental charge). These results pave the road for using even-number-SL MnBi2Te4 to realize the quantized topological magnetoelectric effect and axion electrodynamics in condensed matter systems.

Efficient QP-ADMM Decoder for Binary LDPC Codes and Its Performance Analysis

This paper presents an efficient quadratic programming (QP) decoder via the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) technique, called QP-ADMM, for binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Its main contents are as follows: first, we relax maximum likelihood (ML) decoding problem to a non-convex quadratic program. Then, we develop an ADMM solving algorithm for the formulated non-convex QP decoding model. In the proposed QP-ADMM decoder, complex Euclidean projections onto the check polytope are eliminated and variables in each updated step can be solved analytically in parallel. Moreover, it is proved that the proposed ADMM algorithm converges to a stationary point of the non-convex QP problem under the assumption of sequence convergence. We also verify that the proposed decoder satisfies the favorable property of the all-zeros assumption. Furthermore, by exploiting the inside structures of the QP model, the complexity of the proposed algorithm in each iteration is shown to be linear in terms of LDPC code length. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed QP-ADMM decoder.

Graph Sampling for Matrix Completion Using Recurrent Gershgorin Disc Shift

Matrix completion algorithms fill missing entries in a large matrix given a subset of observed samples. However, how to best pre-select informative matrix entries given a sampling budget is largely unaddressed. In this paper, we propose a fast sample selection strategy for matrix completion from a graph signal processing perspective. Specifically, we first regularize the matrix reconstruction objective using a dual graph signal smoothness prior, resulting in a system of linear equations for solution. We then select appropriate samples to maximize the smallest eigenvalue $λ_{\min}$ of the coefficient matrix, thus maximizing the stability of the linear system. To efficiently solve this combinatorial problem, we derive a greedy sampling strategy, leveraging on Gershgorin circle theorem, that iteratively selects one sample (equivalent to shifting one Gershgorin disc) at a time corresponding to the largest magnitude entry in the first eigenvector of a modified graph Laplacian matrix. Our algorithm benefits computationally from warm start as the first eigenvectors of incremented Laplacian matrices are computed recurrently for more samples. To achieve computation scalability when sampling large matrices, we further rewrite the coefficient matrix as a sum of two separate components, each of which exhibits block-diagonal structure that we exploit for alternating block-wise sampling. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets show that our graph sampling algorithm substantially outperforms existing sampling schemes for matrix completion and reduces the completion error, when combined with a range of modern matrix completion algorithms.

Energy-Efficient Hybrid Precoding for Massive MIMO mmWave Systems With a Fully-Adaptive-Connected Structure

This paper investigates the hybrid precoding design in millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems with a fully-adaptive-connected precoding structure, where a switch-controlled connection is deployed between every antenna and every radio frequency (RF) chain. To maximally enhance the energy efficiency (EE) of hybrid precoding under this structure, the joint optimization of switch-controlled connections and the hybrid precoders is formulated as a large-scale mixed-integer non-convex problem with high-dimensional power constraints. To efficiently solve such a challenging problem, we first decouple it into a continuous hybrid precoding (CHP) subproblem. Then, with the hybrid precoder obtained from the CHP subproblem, the original problem can be equivalently reformulated as a discrete connection-state (DCS) problem with only 0-1 integer variables. For the CHP subproblem, we propose an alternating hybrid precoding (AHP) algorithm. Then, with the hybrid precoder provided by the AHP algorithm, we develop a matching assisted fully-adaptive hybrid precoding (MA-FAHP) algorithm to solve the DCS problem. It is theoretically shown that the proposed MA-FAHP algorithm always converges to a stable solution with the polynomial complexity. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the superior performance of the proposed MA-FAHP algorithm in terms of EE and beampattern.

Designing Unimodular Sequences with Optimized Auto/cross-correlation Properties via Consensus-ADMM/PDMM Approaches

Unimodular sequences with good auto/cross-correlation properties are favorable in wireless communication and radar applications. In this paper, we focus on designing these kinds of sequences. The main content is as follows: first, we formulate the designing problem as a quartic polynomial minimization problem with constant modulus constraints; second, by introducing auxiliary phase variables, the polynomial minimization problem is equivalent to a consensus nonconvex optimization problem; third, to achieve its good approximate solution efficiently, we propose two efficient algorithms based on alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) and parallel direction method of multipliers (PDMM); fourth, we prove that the consensus-ADMM algorithm can converge to some stationary point of the original nonconvex problem and consensus-PDMM's output is some stationary point of the original nonconvex problem if it is convergent. Moreover, we also analyze the nonconvex optimization model's local optimality and computational complexity of the proposed consensus-ADMM/PDMM approaches. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed ADMM/PDMM approaches outperform state-of-the-art ones in either computational cost or correlation properties of the designed unimodular sequences.

On the Design of Constant Modulus Probing Waveforms with Good Correlation Properties for MIMO Radar via Consensus-ADMM Approach

In this paper, we design constant modulus probing waveforms with good correlation properties for collocated multi-input multi-output (MIMO) radar systems. The main content is as follows: first, we formulate the design problem as a fourth order polynomial minimization problem with constant modulus constraints. Then, by exploiting introduced auxiliary variables and their inherent structures, the polynomial optimization model is equivalent to a non-convex consensus minimization problem. Second, a customized alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm is proposed to solve the non-convex problem approximately. In the algorithm, all the subproblems can be solved analytically. Moreover, all subproblems except one subproblem can be performed in parallel. Third, we prove that the customized ADMM algorithm is theoretically-guaranteed convergent if proper parameters are chosen. Fourth, two variant ADMM algorithms, based on stochastic block coordinate descent and accelerated gradient descent, are proposed to reduce computational complexity and speed up the convergence rate. Numerical examples show the effectiveness of the proposed consensus-ADMM algorithm and its variants.
