Design of Artificial Interference Signals for Covert Communication Aided by Multiple Friendly Nodes

In this paper, we consider a scenario of covert communication aided by multiple friendly interference nodes. The objective is to conceal the legitimate communication link under the surveillance of a warden. The main content is as follows: first, we propose a novel strategy for generating artificial noise signals in the considered covert scenario. Then, we leverage the statistical information of channel coefficients to optimize the basis matrix of the artificial noise signals space in the absence of accurate channel fading information between the friendly interference nodes and the legitimate receiver. The optimization problem aims to design artificial noise signals within the space to facilitate covert communication while minimizing the impact on the performance of legitimate communication. Second, a customized Rimannian Stochastic Variance Reduced Gradient (R-SVRG) algorithm is proposed to solve the non-convex problem. In the algorithm, we employ the Riemannian optimization framework to analyze the geometric structure of the basis matrix constraints and transform the original non-convex optimization problem into an unconstrained problem on the complex Stiefel manifold for solution. Third, we theoretically prove the convergence of the proposed algorithm to a stationary point. In the end, we evaluate the performance of the proposed strategy for generating artificial noise signals through numerical simulations. The results demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms the Gaussian artificial noise strategy without optimization.

Gate Tunable Asymmetric Ozone Adsorption on Graphene

Molecular adsorption is pivotal in device fabrication and material synthesis for quantum technology. However, elucidating the behavior of physisorption poses technical challenges. Here graphene with ultrahigh sensitivity was utilized to detect ozone adsorption at cryogenic temperatures. Significant hole doping observed in graphene indicates a strong interaction between ozone and graphene. Interestingly, the adsorption exhibits asymmetry with positive and negative gate voltages. The strong affinity of ozone provides a tool to modulate materials and devices, while the gate tunability of adsorption offers new insights into construction and manipulation of oxide quantum materials.

Fabrication-induced even-odd discrepancy of magnetotransport in few-layer MnBi$_2$Te$_4$

The van der Waals antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 represents a promising platform for exploring the layer-dependent magnetism and topological states of matter. Recently observed discrepancies between magnetic and transport properties have aroused controversies concerning the topological nature of MnBi2Te4 in the ground state. In this article, we demonstrate that fabrication can induce mismatched even-odd layer dependent magnetotransport in few-layer MnBi2Te4. We perform a comprehensive study of the magnetotransport properties in 6- and 7-septuple-layer MnBi2Te4, and reveal that both even- and odd-number-layer device can show zero Hall plateau phenomena in zero magnetic field. Importantly, a statistical survey of the optical contrast in more than 200 MnBi2Te4 flakes reveals that the zero Hall plateau in odd-number-layer devices arises from the reduction of the effective thickness during the fabrication, a factor that was rarely noticed in previous studies of 2D materials. Our finding not only provides an explanation to the controversies regarding the discrepancy of the even-odd layer dependent magnetotransport in MnBi2Te4, but also highlights the critical issues concerning the fabrication and characterization of 2D material devices.

Gate-controlled neuromorphic functional transition in an electrochemical graphene transistor

Neuromorphic devices have gained significant attention as potential building blocks for the next generation of computing technologies owing to their ability to emulate the functionalities of biological nervous systems. The essential components in artificial neural network such as synapses and neurons are predominantly implemented by dedicated devices with specific functionalities. In this work, we present a gate-controlled transition of neuromorphic functions between artificial neurons and synapses in monolayer graphene transistors that can be employed as memtransistors or synaptic transistors as required. By harnessing the reliability of reversible electrochemical reactions between C atoms and hydrogen ions, the electric conductivity of graphene transistors can be effectively manipulated, resulting in high on/off resistance ratio, well-defined set/reset voltage, and prolonged retention time. Overall, the on-demand switching of neuromorphic functions in a single graphene transistor provides a promising opportunity to develop adaptive neural networks for the upcoming era of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Real-time observation of magnetization and magnon dynamics in a two-dimensional topological antiferromagnet MnBi2Te4

Atomically thin van der Waals magnetic materials have not only provided a fertile playground to explore basic physics in the two-dimensional (2D) limit but also created vast opportunities for novel ultrafast functional devices. Here we systematically investigate ultrafast magnetization dynamics and spin wave dynamics in few-layer topological antiferromagnetic MnBi2Te4 crystals as a function of layer number, temperature, and magnetic field. We find laser-induced (de)magnetization processes can be used to accurately track the distinct magnetic states in different magnetic field regimes, including showing clear odd-even layer number effects. In addition, strongly field-dependent antiferromagnetic magnon modes with tens of gigahertz frequencies are optically generated and directly observed in the time domain. Remarkably, we find that magnetization and magnon dynamics can be observed in not only the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect but also the time resolved reflectivity, indicating strong correlation between the magnetic state and electronic structure. These measurements present the first comprehensive overview of ultrafast spin dynamics in this novel 2D antiferromagnet, paving the way for potential applications in 2D antiferromagnetic spintronics and magnonics as well as further studies of ultrafast control of both magnetization and topological quantum states.

Direct observation of chiral edge current at zero magnetic field in odd-layer MnBi$_2$Te$_4$

The chiral edge current is the boundary manifestation of the Chern number of a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator. Its direct observation is assumed to require well-quantized Hall conductance, and is so far lacking. The recently discovered van der Waals antiferromagnet MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is theorized as a QAH in odd-layers but has shown Hall resistivity below the quantization value at zero magnetic field. Here, we perform scanning superconducting quantum interference device (sSQUID) microscopy on these seemingly failed QAH insulators to image their current distribution. When gated to the charge neutral point, our device exhibits edge current, which flows unidirectionally on the odd-layer boundary both with vacuum and with the even-layer. The chirality of such edge current reverses with the magnetization of the bulk. Surprisingly, we find the edge channels coexist with finite bulk conduction even though the bulk chemical potential is in the band gap, suggesting their robustness under significant edge-bulk scattering. Our result establishes the existence of chiral edge currents in a topological antiferromagnet and offers an alternative for identifying QAH states.

Giant nonlocal edge conduction in the axion insulator state of MnBi2Te4

The recently discovered antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator (TI) MnBi2Te4 represents a versatile material platform for exploring exotic topological quantum phenomena in nanoscale devices. It has been proposed that even-septuple-layer (even-SL) MnBi2Te4 can host helical hinge currents with unique nonlocal behavior, but experimental confirmation is still lacking. In this work, we report transport studies of exfoliated MnBi2Te4 flakes with varied thicknesses down to the few-nanometer regime. We observe giant nonlocal transport signals in even-SL devices when the system is in the axion insulator state but vanishingly small nonlocal signal in the odd-SL devices at the same magnetic field range. In conjunction with theoretical calculations, we demonstrate that the nonlocal transport is via the helical edge currents mainly distributed at the hinges between the side and top/bottom surfaces. The helical edge currents in the axion insulator state may find unique applications in topological quantum devices.

Secure Transmission for IRS-Assisted MIMO MmWave Systems

In this paper, we investigate the secure beamforming design in an intelligent reflection surface (IRS) assisted millimeter wave (mmWave) system, where the hybrid beamforming (HB) and the passive beamforming (PB) are employed by the transmitter and the IRS, respectively. To maximize the secrecy capacity, the joint optimization of HB and PB is formulated as a nonconvex problem with constant-modulus constraints. To efficiently solve such a challenging problem, the original problem is decomposed into a PB subproblem and an HB subproblem, then these two subproblems are sequentially solved by proposed algorithms. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of proposed approach in comparison with the state-of-the-art works.

Towards Quantized Model Parallelism for Graph-Augmented MLPs Based on Gradient-Free ADMM Framework

While Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) are popular in the deep learning community, they suffer from several challenges including over-smoothing, over-squashing, and gradient vanishing. Recently, a series of models have attempted to relieve these issues by first augmenting the node features and then imposing node-wise functions based on Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), which are widely referred to as GA-MLP models. However, while GA-MLP models enjoy deeper architectures for better accuracy, their efficiency largely deteriorates. Moreover, popular acceleration techniques such as stochastic-version or data-parallelism cannot be effectively applied due to the dependency among samples (i.e., nodes) in graphs. To address these issues, in this paper, instead of data parallelism, we propose a parallel graph deep learning Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (pdADMM-G) framework to achieve model parallelism: parameters in each layer of GA-MLP models can be updated in parallel. The extended pdADMM-G-Q algorithm reduces communication costs by introducing the quantization technique. Theoretical convergence to a (quantized) stationary point of the pdADMM-G algorithm and the pdADMM-G-Q algorithm is provided with a sublinear convergence rate $o(1/k)$, where $k$ is the number of iterations. Extensive experiments demonstrate the convergence of two proposed algorithms. Moreover, they lead to a more massive speedup and better performance than all state-of-the-art comparison methods on nine benchmark datasets. Last but not least, the proposed pdADMM-G-Q algorithm reduces communication overheads by up to $45\%$ without loss of performance. Direct visualization of edge state in even-layer MnBi2Te4 at zero magnetic field

Being the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic(AFM) topological insulator(TI), MnBi2Te4 is argued to be a topological axion state in its even-layer form due to the antiparallel magnetization between the top and bottom layers. Here we combine both transport and scanning microwave impedance microscopy(sMIM) to investigate such axion state in atomically thin MnBi2Te4 with even-layer thickness at zero magnetic field. While transport measurements show a zero Hall plateau signaturing the axion state, sMIM uncovers an unexpected edge state raising questions regarding the nature of the 'axion state'. Based on our model calculation, we propose that the edge state of even-layer MnBi2Te4 at zero field is derived from gapped helical edge states of the quantum spin Hall effect with time-reversal-symmetry breaking, when a crossover from a three-dimensional TI MnBi2Te4 to a two-dimensional TI occurs. Our finding thus signifies the richness of topological phases in MnB2Te4 that has yet to be fully explored.

Helical Luttinger liquid on the edge of a 2-dimensional topological antiferromagnet

Boundary helical Luttinger liquid (HLL) with broken bulk time-reversal symmetry belongs to a unique topological class which may occur in antiferromagnets (AFM). Here, we search for signatures of HLL on the edge of a recently discovered topological AFM, MnBi2Te4 even-layer. Using scanning superconducting quantum interference device, we directly image helical edge current in the AFM ground state appearing at its charge neutral point. Such helical edge state accompanies an insulating bulk which is topologically distinct from the ferromagnetic Chern insulator phase as revealed in a magnetic field driven quantum phase transition. The edge conductance of the AFM order follows a power-law as a function of temperature and source-drain bias which serves as strong evidence for HLL. Such HLL scaling is robust at finite fields below the quantum critical point. The observed HLL in a layered AFM semiconductor represents a highly tunable topological matter compatible with future spintronics and quantum computation.

On the design of Massive MIMO-QAM detector via $\ell_2$-Box ADMM approach

In this letter, we develop an $\ell_2$-box maximum likelihood (ML) formulation for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signal detection and customize an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm to solve the nonconvex optimization model. In the $\ell_2$-box ADMM implementation, all variables are solved analytically. Moreover, several theoretical results related to convergence, iteration complexity, and computational complexity are presented. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed $\ell_2$-box ADMM detector in comparison with state-of-the-arts approaches.

Meeting-Merging-Mission: A Multi-robot Coordinate Framework for Large-Scale Communication-Limited Exploration

This letter presents a complete framework Meeting-Merging-Mission for multi-robot exploration under communication restriction. Considering communication is limited in both bandwidth and range in the real world, we propose a lightweight environment presentation method and an efficient cooperative exploration strategy. For lower bandwidth, each robot utilizes specific polytopes to maintains free space and super frontier information (SFI) as the source for exploration decision-making. To reduce repeated exploration, we develop a mission-based protocol that drives robots to share collected information in stable rendezvous. We also design a complete path planning scheme for both centralized and decentralized cases. To validate that our framework is practical and generic, we present an extensive benchmark and deploy our system into multi-UGV and multi-UAV platforms.

Ultrafast coherent interlayer phonon dynamics in atomically thin layers of MnBi2Te4

The atomically thin MnBi2Te4 crystal is a novel magnetic topological insulator, exhibiting exotic quantum physics. Here we report a systematic investigation of ultrafast carrier dynamics and coherent interlayer phonons in few-layer MnBi2Te4 as a function of layer number using time-resolved pump-probe reflectivity spectroscopy. Pronounced coherent phonon oscillations from the interlayer breathing mode are directly observed in the time domain. We find that the coherent oscillation frequency, the photocarrier and coherent phonon decay rates all depend sensitively on the sample thickness. The time-resolved measurements are complemented by ultralow-frequency Raman spectroscopy measurements, which both confirm the interlayer breathing mode and additionally enable observation of the interlayer shear mode. The layer dependence of these modes allows us to extract both the out-of-plane and in-plane interlayer force constants. Our studies not only reveal the interlayer van der Waals coupling strengths, but also shed light on the ultrafast optical properties of this novel two-dimensional material.

Edge Graph Neural Networks for Massive MIMO Detection

Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Out (MIMO) detection is an important problem in modern wireless communication systems. While traditional Belief Propagation (BP) detectors perform poorly on loopy graphs, the recent Graph Neural Networks (GNNs)-based method can overcome the drawbacks of BP and achieve superior performance. Nevertheless, direct use of GNN ignores the importance of edge attributes and suffers from high computation overhead using a fully connected graph structure. In this paper, we propose an efficient GNN-inspired algorithm, called the Edge Graph Neural Network (EGNN), to detect MIMO signals. We first compute graph edge weights through channel correlation and then leverage the obtained weights as a metric to evaluate the importance of neighbors of each node. Moreover, we design an adaptive Edge Drop (ED) scheme to sparsify the graph such that computational cost can be significantly reduced. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed EGNN achieves better or comparable performance to popular MIMO detection methods for different modulation schemes and costs the least detection time compared to GNN-based approaches.

Multi-Level Contrastive Learning for Cross-Lingual Alignment

Cross-language pre-trained models such as multilingual BERT (mBERT) have achieved significant performance in various cross-lingual downstream NLP tasks. This paper proposes a multi-level contrastive learning (ML-CTL) framework to further improve the cross-lingual ability of pre-trained models. The proposed method uses translated parallel data to encourage the model to generate similar semantic embeddings for different languages. However, unlike the sentence-level alignment used in most previous studies, in this paper, we explicitly integrate the word-level information of each pair of parallel sentences into contrastive learning. Moreover, cross-zero noise contrastive estimation (CZ-NCE) loss is proposed to alleviate the impact of the floating-point error in the training process with a small batch size. The proposed method significantly improves the cross-lingual transfer ability of our basic model (mBERT) and outperforms on multiple zero-shot cross-lingual downstream tasks compared to the same-size models in the Xtreme benchmark.

Efficient ADMM Decoder for Non-binary LDPC Codes with Codeword-Independent Performance

In this paper, we devote to devise a non-binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoder in Galois fields of characteristic two ($\mathbb{F}_{2^q}$) via the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) technique. Through the proposed bit embedding technique and the decomposition technique of the three-variables parity-check equation, an efficient ADMM decoding algorithm for non-binary LDPC codes is proposed. The computation complexity in each ADMM iteration is roughly $\mathcal{O}(nq)$, which is significantly lower than the existing LDPC decoders. Moreover, we prove that the proposed decoder satisfies the favorable property of the codeword-independent. Simulation results demonstrate the outstanding performance of the proposed decoder in contrast with state-of-the-art LDPC decoders.

Influences of the dissipative topological edge state on quantized transport in MnBi2Te4

The beauty of quantum Hall (QH) effect is the metrological precision of Hall resistance quantization that originates from the topological edge states. Understanding the factors that lead to quantization breakdown not only provides important insights on the nature of the topological protection of these edge states, but is beneficial for device applications involving such quantized transport. In this work, we combine conventional transport and real space conductivity mapping to investigate whether the quantization breakdown is tied to the disappearance of edge state in the hotly studied MnBi2Te4 system. Our experimental results unambiguously show that topological edge state does exist when quantization breakdown occurs. Such edge state is dissipative in nature and could lead to a quantization breakdown due to its diffusive character causing overlapping with bulk and other edge states in real devices. Our findings bring attentions to issues that are generally inaccessible in the transport study of QH, but can play important roles in practical measurements and device applications.
