HSVRS: A Virtual Reality System of the Hide-and-Seek Game to Enhance Gaze Fixation Ability for Autistic Children

Numerous children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) exhibit abnormal eye gaze pattern in communication and social interaction. Due to the high cost of ASD interventions and a shortage of professional therapists, researchers have explored the use of virtual reality (VR) systems as a supplementary intervention for autistic children. This paper presents the design of a novel VR-based system called the Hide and Seek Virtual Reality System (HSVRS). The HSVRS allows children with ASD to enhance their ocular gaze abilities while engaging in a hide-and-seek game with a virtual avatar. By employing face and voice manipulation technology, the HSVRS provides the option to customize the appearance and voice of the avatar, making it resemble someone familiar to the child, such as their parents. We conducted a pilot study at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, China, to evaluate the feasibility of HSVRS as an auxiliary intervention for children with autism (N=24). Through the analysis of subjective questionnaires completed by the participants' parents and objective eye gaze data, we observed that children in the VR-assisted intervention group demonstrated better performance compared to those in the control group. Furthermore, our findings indicate that the utilization of face and voice manipulation techniques to personalize avatars in hide-and-seek games can enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the system.

A construction of support $τ$-tilting modules over $τ$-tilting finite algebras

The notion of (semi)bricks, regarded as a generalization of (semi)simple modules, appeared in a paper of Ringel in 1976. In recent years, there has been several new developments motivated by links to τ-tilting theory studied by Demonet-Iyama-Jasso and Asai. In this paper, we will discuss how to glue semibricks along a recollement with the intermediate extension functor similar to gluing simple modules by Beilinson-Bernstein-Deligne. As an application, we investigate the behavior of τ-tilting finite under recollements of module categories of algebras. Moreover, we give some examples to show the construction of support τ-tilting modules over τ-tilting finite algebras by gluing semibricks via recollements.

Gluing support $τ$-tilting modules via symmetric ladders of height 2

Gluing techniques with respect to a recollement have long been studied. Recently, ladders of recollements of abelian categories were introduced as important tools. We present explicit constructions of gluing of support $τ$-tilting modules via symmetric ladders of height two. Moreover, we apply the result to triangular matrix algebras to give a more detailed version of the known Jasso's reduction and study maximal green sequences.

Wide-range continuous tuning of the thermal conductivity of $\rm La_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-δ}$ films via room-temperature ion-gel gating

Solid-state control of the thermal conductivity of materials is of exceptional interest for novel devices such as thermal diodes and switches. Here, we demonstrate the ability to continuously tune the thermal conductivity of nanoscale films of $\rm La_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-δ}$ (LSCO) by a factor of over 5, via a room-temperature electrolyte-gate-induced non-volatile topotactic phase transformation from perovskite (with $δ\approx 0.1$) to an oxygen-vacancy-ordered brownmillerite phase (with $δ=0.5$), accompanied by a metal-insulator transition. Combining time-domain thermoreflectance and electronic transport measurements, model analyses based on molecular dynamics and Boltzmann transport, and structural characterization by X-ray diffraction, we uncover and deconvolve the effects of these transitions on heat carriers, including electrons and lattice vibrations. The wide-range continuous tunability of LSCO thermal conductivity enabled by low-voltage (below 4 V) room-temperature electrolyte gating opens the door to non-volatile dynamic control of thermal transport in perovskite-based functional materials, for thermal regulation and management in device applications.

Conformal Off-policy Prediction

Off-policy evaluation is critical in a number of applications where new policies need to be evaluated offline before online deployment. Most existing methods focus on the expected return, define the target parameter through averaging and provide a point estimator only. In this paper, we develop a novel procedure to produce reliable interval estimators for a target policy's return starting from any initial state. Our proposal accounts for the variability of the return around its expectation, focuses on the individual effect and offers valid uncertainty quantification. Our main idea lies in designing a pseudo policy that generates subsamples as if they were sampled from the target policy so that existing conformal prediction algorithms are applicable to prediction interval construction. Our methods are justified by theories, synthetic data and real data from short-video platforms.

A Weil-Petersson Type Metric on the Space of Fano Kaehler-Ricci Solitons

In this paper we define a Weil-Petersson type metric on the space of shrinking Kaehler-Ricci solitons and prove a necessary and sufficient condition on when it is independent of the choices of Kaehler-Ricci soliton metrics. We also show that the Weil-Petersson metric is Kaehler when it defines a metric on the Kuranishi space of small deformations of Fano Kaehler-Ricci solitons. Finally, we establish the first and second order deformation of Fano Kähler-Ricci solitons and show that, essentially, the first effective term in deforming Kaehler-Ricci solitons leads to the Weil-Petersson metric.

Symmetry-protected higher-order exceptional points in staggered flatband rhombic lattices

Higher-order exceptional points (EPs), which appear as multifold degeneracies in the spectra of non-Hermitian systems, are garnering extensive attention in various multidisciplinary fields. However, constructing higher-order EPs still remains as a challenge due to the strict requirement of the system symmetries. Here we demonstrate that higher-order EPs can be judiciously fabricated in PT -symmetric staggered rhombic lattices by introducing not only on-site gain/loss but also nonHermitian couplings. Zero-energy flatbands persist and symmetry-protected third-order EPs (EP3) arise in these systems owing to the non-Hermitian chiral/sublattice symmetry, but distinct phase transitions and propagation dynamics occur. Specifically, the EP3 arises at the Brillouin zone (BZ) boundary in the presence of on-site gain/loss. The single-site excitations display an exponential power increase in the PT -broken phase. Meanwhile, a nearly flatband sustains when a small lattice perturbation is applied. For the lattices with non-Hermitian couplings, however, the EP3 appears at the BZ center. Quite remarkably, our analysis unveils a dynamical delocalization-localization transition for the excitation of the dispersive bands and a quartic power increase beyond the EP3. Our scheme provides a new platform towards the investigation of the higher-order EPs, and can be further extended to the study of topological phase transitions or nonlinear processes associated with higher-order EPs.

Reduction of wide subcategories and recollements

In this paper, we prove a reduction result on wide subcategories of abelian categories which is similar to Calabi-Yau reduction, silting reduction and $τ$-tilting reduction. More precisely, if an abelian category $\mathcal{A}$ admits a recollement relative to abelian categories $\mathcal{A}'$ and $\mathcal{A}"$, diagrammatically expressed by $$\xymatrix@!C=2pc{ \mathcal{A'} \ar@{>->}[rr]|{i_{*}} && \mathcal{A} \ar@<-4.0mm>@{->>}[ll]_{i^{*}} \ar@{->>}[rr]|{j^{*}} \ar@{->>}@<4.0mm>[ll]^{i^{!}}&& \mathcal{A''} \ar@{>->}@<-4.0mm>[ll]_{j_{!}} \ar@{>->}@<4.0mm>[ll]^{j_{*}} },$$ then the assignment $\cc\mapsto j^*(\cc)$ defines a bijection between wide subcategories in $\mathcal{A}$ containing $i_{*}(\mathcal{A}')$ and wide subcategories in $\mathcal{A}"$. Moreover, a wide subcategory $\mathcal{C}$ of $\mathcal{A}$ containing $i_{*}(\mathcal{A}')$ admits a new recollement relative to $\mathcal{A}'$ and $j^{*}(\mathcal{C})$ which is induced from the original recollement.

KRNet: Towards Efficient Knowledge Replay

The knowledge replay technique has been widely used in many tasks such as continual learning and continuous domain adaptation. The key lies in how to effectively encode the knowledge extracted from previous data and replay them during current training procedure. A simple yet effective model to achieve knowledge replay is autoencoder. However, the number of stored latent codes in autoencoder increases linearly with the scale of data and the trained encoder is redundant for the replaying stage. In this paper, we propose a novel and efficient knowledge recording network (KRNet) which directly maps an arbitrary sample identity number to the corresponding datum. Compared with autoencoder, our KRNet requires significantly ($400\times$) less storage cost for the latent codes and can be trained without the encoder sub-network. Extensive experiments validate the efficiency of KRNet, and as a showcase, it is successfully applied in the task of continual learning.

Ridgeless Regression with Random Features

Recent theoretical studies illustrated that kernel ridgeless regression can guarantee good generalization ability without an explicit regularization. In this paper, we investigate the statistical properties of ridgeless regression with random features and stochastic gradient descent. We explore the effect of factors in the stochastic gradient and random features, respectively. Specifically, random features error exhibits the double-descent curve. Motivated by the theoretical findings, we propose a tunable kernel algorithm that optimizes the spectral density of kernel during training. Our work bridges the interpolation theory and practical algorithm.

NetRCA: An Effective Network Fault Cause Localization Algorithm

Localizing the root cause of network faults is crucial to network operation and maintenance. However, due to the complicated network architectures and wireless environments, as well as limited labeled data, accurately localizing the true root cause is challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm named NetRCA to deal with this problem. Firstly, we extract effective derived features from the original raw data by considering temporal, directional, attribution, and interaction characteristics. Secondly, we adopt multivariate time series similarity and label propagation to generate new training data from both labeled and unlabeled data to overcome the lack of labeled samples. Thirdly, we design an ensemble model which combines XGBoost, rule set learning, attribution model, and graph algorithm, to fully utilize all data information and enhance performance. Finally, experiments and analysis are conducted on the real-world dataset from ICASSP 2022 AIOps Challenge to demonstrate the superiority and effectiveness of our approach.

Quantile index regression

Estimating the structures at high or low quantiles has become an important subject and attracted increasing attention across numerous fields. However, due to data sparsity at tails, it usually is a challenging task to obtain reliable estimation, especially for high-dimensional data. This paper suggests a flexible parametric structure to tails, and this enables us to conduct the estimation at quantile levels with rich observations and then to extrapolate the fitted structures to far tails. The proposed model depends on some quantile indices and hence is called the quantile index regression. Moreover, the composite quantile regression method is employed to obtain non-crossing quantile estimators, and this paper further establishes their theoretical properties, including asymptotic normality for the case with low-dimensional covariates and non-asymptotic error bounds for that with high-dimensional covariates. Simulation studies and an empirical example are presented to illustrate the usefulness of the new model.

CloudRCA: A Root Cause Analysis Framework for Cloud Computing Platforms

As business of Alibaba expands across the world among various industries, higher standards are imposed on the service quality and reliability of big data cloud computing platforms which constitute the infrastructure of Alibaba Cloud. However, root cause analysis in these platforms is non-trivial due to the complicated system architecture. In this paper, we propose a root cause analysis framework called CloudRCA which makes use of heterogeneous multi-source data including Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), logs, as well as topology, and extracts important features via state-of-the-art anomaly detection and log analysis techniques. The engineered features are then utilized in a Knowledge-informed Hierarchical Bayesian Network (KHBN) model to infer root causes with high accuracy and efficiency. Ablation study and comprehensive experimental comparisons demonstrate that, compared to existing frameworks, CloudRCA 1) consistently outperforms existing approaches in f1-score across different cloud systems; 2) can handle novel types of root causes thanks to the hierarchical structure of KHBN; 3) performs more robustly with respect to algorithmic configurations; and 4) scales more favorably in the data and feature sizes. Experiments also show that a cross-platform transfer learning mechanism can be adopted to further improve the accuracy by more than 10\%. CloudRCA has been integrated into the diagnosis system of Alibaba Cloud and employed in three typical cloud computing platforms including MaxCompute, Realtime Compute and Hologres. It saves Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) more than $20\%$ in the time spent on resolving failures in the past twelve months and improves service reliability significantly.

EllipseNet: Anchor-Free Ellipse Detection for Automatic Cardiac Biometrics in Fetal Echocardiography

As an important scan plane, four chamber view is routinely performed in both second trimester perinatal screening and fetal echocardiographic examinations. The biometrics in this plane including cardio-thoracic ratio (CTR) and cardiac axis are usually measured by sonographers for diagnosing congenital heart disease. However, due to the commonly existing artifacts like acoustic shadowing, the traditional manual measurements not only suffer from the low efficiency, but also with the inconsistent results depending on the operators' skills. In this paper, we present an anchor-free ellipse detection network, namely EllipseNet, which detects the cardiac and thoracic regions in ellipse and automatically calculates the CTR and cardiac axis for fetal cardiac biometrics in 4-chamber view. In particular, we formulate the network that detects the center of each object as points and regresses the ellipses' parameters simultaneously. We define an intersection-over-union loss to further regulate the regression procedure. We evaluate EllipseNet on clinical echocardiogram dataset with more than 2000 subjects. Experimental results show that the proposed framework outperforms several state-of-the-art methods. Source code will be available at https://git.openi.org.cn/capepoint/EllipseNet .

Higher-order exceptional point and Landau-Zener Bloch oscillations in driven non-Hermitian photonic Lieb lattices

We propose a scheme to realize parity-time (PT) symmetric photonic Lieb lattices of ribbon shape and complex couplings, thereby demonstrating the higher-order exceptional point (EP) and Landau-Zener Bloch (LZB) oscillations in presence of a refractive index gradient. Quite different from non-Hermitian flatband lattices with on-site gain/loss, which undergo thresholdless PT symmetry breaking, the spectrum for such quasi-one-dimensional Lieb lattices has completely real values when the index gradient is applied perpendicular to the ribbon, and a triply degenerated (third-order) EP with coalesced eigenvalues and eigenvectors emerges only when the amplitude of gain/loss ratio reaches a certain threshold value. When the index gradient is applied parallel to the ribbon, the LZB oscillations exhibit intriguing characteristics including asymmetric energy transition and pseudo-Hermitian propagation as the flatband is excited. Meanwhile, a secondary emission occurs each time when the oscillatory motion passes through the EP, leading to distinct energy distribution in the flatband when a dispersive band is excited. Such novel phenomena may appear in other non-Hermitian flatband systems. Our work may also bring insight and suggest a photonic platform to study the symmetry and topological characterization of higher-order EPs that may find unique applications in for example enhancing sensitivity.

Divide-and-Assemble: Learning Block-wise Memory for Unsupervised Anomaly Detection

Reconstruction-based methods play an important role in unsupervised anomaly detection in images. Ideally, we expect a perfect reconstruction for normal samples and poor reconstruction for abnormal samples. Since the generalizability of deep neural networks is difficult to control, existing models such as autoencoder do not work well. In this work, we interpret the reconstruction of an image as a divide-and-assemble procedure. Surprisingly, by varying the granularity of division on feature maps, we are able to modulate the reconstruction capability of the model for both normal and abnormal samples. That is, finer granularity leads to better reconstruction, while coarser granularity leads to poorer reconstruction. With proper granularity, the gap between the reconstruction error of normal and abnormal samples can be maximized. The divide-and-assemble framework is implemented by embedding a novel multi-scale block-wise memory module into an autoencoder network. Besides, we introduce adversarial learning and explore the semantic latent representation of the discriminator, which improves the detection of subtle anomaly. We achieve state-of-the-art performance on the challenging MVTec AD dataset. Remarkably, we improve the vanilla autoencoder model by 10.1% in terms of the AUROC score.

RobustPeriod: Time-Frequency Mining for Robust Multiple Periodicity Detection

Periodicity detection is a crucial step in time series tasks, including monitoring and forecasting of metrics in many areas, such as IoT applications and self-driving database management system. In many of these applications, multiple periodic components exist and are often interlaced with each other. Such dynamic and complicated periodic patterns make the accurate periodicity detection difficult. In addition, other components in the time series, such as trend, outliers and noises, also pose additional challenges for accurate periodicity detection. In this paper, we propose a robust and general framework for multiple periodicity detection. Our algorithm applies maximal overlap discrete wavelet transform to transform the time series into multiple temporal-frequency scales such that different periodic components can be isolated. We rank them by wavelet variance, and then at each scale detect single periodicity by our proposed Huber-periodogram and Huber-ACF robustly. We rigorously prove the theoretical properties of Huber-periodogram and justify the use of Fisher's test on Huber-periodogram for periodicity detection. To further refine the detected periods, we compute unbiased autocorrelation function based on Wiener-Khinchin theorem from Huber-periodogram for improved robustness and efficiency. Experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets show that our algorithm outperforms other popular ones for both single and multiple periodicity detection.

On Deformations of Fano Manifolds

In this paper we provide new necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on small deformations of a Fano Kähler-Einstein manifold. We also show that the Weil-Petersson metric can be approximated by the Ricci curvatures of the canonical $L^2$ metrics on the direct image bundles. In addition, we describe the plurisubharmonicity of the energy functional of harmonic maps on the Kuranishi space of the deformation of compact Kähler-Einstein manifolds of general type.
