Ultralow lattice thermal conductivity and electronic properties of monolayer 1T phase semimetal SiTe2 and SnTe2

2H phase (trigonal prismatic D3h) of layered two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted a lot of interests due to the superior electronic and optoelectronic properties. However, flexible electronic devices and thermoelectric performances based on 2H phase have been potentially limited by the strain sensitive electronic band gap and high lattice thermal conductivity (kappa_L). Here, we predict and calculate two 1T (octahedral Oh) phase monolayer telluride materials SnTe2 and SiTe2 with soft mechanics, ultralow kappa_L and electronic properties. The calculated in-plane Young's modulus of monolayer SnTe2 is softer than most of 1T-MX2 compounds. Furthermore, monolayer SiTe2 and SnTe2 also have relatively flexible electronic properties under large biaxial strain, indicating potential flexible electrode materials. Meanwhile, monolayer SiTe2 and SnTe2 both exhibit ultralow \k{appa}_L (2.27 W/mK of SiTe2 and 1.62 W/mK of SnTe2) at room temperature. Considering both acoustic and polar optical phonon scattering of the electronic relaxation time, the figure of merit (ZT) can achieve 0.46 at 600 K and 0.71 at 900 K for monolayer SiTe2 and SnTe2 respectively.

Fidelity Imposed Network Edit (FINE) for Solving Ill-Posed Image Reconstruction

Deep learning (DL) is increasingly used to solve ill-posed inverse problems in imaging, such as reconstruction from noisy or incomplete data, as DL offers advantages over explicit image feature extractions in defining the needed prior. However, DL typically does not incorporate the precise physics of data generation or data fidelity. Instead, DL networks are trained to output some average response to an input. Consequently, DL image reconstruction contains errors, and may perform poorly when the test data deviates significantly from the training data, such as having new pathological features. To address this lack of data fidelity problem in DL image reconstruction, a novel approach, which we call fidelity-imposed network edit (FINE), is proposed. In FINE, a pre-trained prior network's weights are modified according to the physical model, on a test case. Our experiments demonstrate that FINE can achieve superior performance in two important inverse problems in neuroimaging: quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) and under-sampled reconstruction in MRI.

Generical behavior of flows strongly monotone with respect to high-rank cones

We consider a $C^{1,α}$ smooth flow in $\mathbb{R}^n$ which is "strongly monotone" with respect to a cone $C$ of rank $k$, a closed set that contains a linear subspace of dimension $k$ and no linear subspaces of higher dimension. We prove that orbits with initial data from an open and dense subset of the phase space are either pseudo-ordered or convergent to equilibria. This covers the celebrated Hirsch's Generic Convergence Theorem in the case $k=1$, yields a generic Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem for the case $k=2$, and holds true with arbitrary dimension $k$. Our approach involves the ergodic argument using the $k$-exponential separation and the associated $k$-Lyapunov exponent (that reduces to the first Lyapunov exponent if $k=1$).

Complex magnetic order in nickelate slabs

Magnetic ordering phenomena have a profound influence on the macroscopic properties of correlated-electron materials, but their realistic prediction remains a formidable challenge. An archetypical example is the ternary nickel oxide system RNiO3 (R = rare earth), where the period-four magnetic order with proposals of collinear and non-collinear structures and the amplitude of magnetic moments on different Ni sublattices have been subjects of debate for decades. Here we introduce an elementary model system - NdNiO3 slabs embedded in a non-magnetic NdGaO3 matrix - and use polarized resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) to show that both collinear and non-collinear magnetic structures can be realized, depending on the slab thickness. The crossover between both spin structures is correctly predicted by density functional theory and can be qualitatively understood in a low-energy spin model. We further demonstrate that the amplitude ratio of magnetic moments in neighboring NiO6 octahedra can be accurately determined by RXS in combination with a correlated double cluster model. Targeted synthesis of model systems with controlled thickness and synergistic application of polarized RXS and ab-initio theory thus provide new perspectives for research on complex magnetism, in analogy to two-dimensional materials created by exfoliation.

The conditional permutation test for independence while controlling for confounders

We propose a general new method, the conditional permutation test, for testing the conditional independence of variables $X$ and $Y$ given a potentially high-dimensional random vector $Z$ that may contain confounding factors. The proposed test permutes entries of $X$ non-uniformly, so as to respect the existing dependence between $X$ and $Z$ and thus account for the presence of these confounders. Like the conditional randomization test of Candès et al. (2018), our test relies on the availability of an approximation to the distribution of $X \mid Z$. While Candès et al. (2018)'s test uses this estimate to draw new $X$ values, for our test we use this approximation to design an appropriate non-uniform distribution on permutations of the $X$ values already seen in the true data. We provide an efficient Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampler for the implementation of our method, and establish bounds on the Type I error in terms of the error in the approximation of the conditional distribution of $X\mid Z$, finding that, for the worst case test statistic, the inflation in Type I error of the conditional permutation test is no larger than that of the conditional randomization test. We validate these theoretical results with experiments on simulated data and on the Capital Bikeshare data set.

A Se vacancy induced localized Raman mode in two-dimensional MoSe2 grown by CVD

Defects play a significant role in optical properties of semiconducting two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). In ultra-thin MoSe2, a remarkable feature at ~250 cm-1 in Raman spectra is ascribed to be a defect-related mode. Recent attempts failed to explain the origin of this peak, leaving it being a mystery. Here in this work, we demonstrate that this peak is a Se vacancy induced defect mode. Heat effect and hydrogen etching are two main factors to introduce Se vacancies in CVD process of growing MoSe2. A phonon confinement model can well explain the behaviors of intrinsic Raman modes. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that single Se vacancy (VSe) is responsible for the appearance of Raman peak at ~250 cm-1 and this mode is an A1g-like localized mode which is also confirmed by polarized Raman scattering experiment. The relative strength of this mode can be a characterization of the quality of 2D MoSe2. This work may offer a simple method to tailor chalcogenide vacancies in 2D TMDCs and provide a way to study their vibrational properties.

TG-Hyperbolicity of Virtual Links

We extend the theory of hyperbolicity of links in the 3-sphere to tg-hyperbolicity of virtual links, using the fact that the theory of virtual links can be translated into the theory of links living in closed orientable thickened surfaces. When the boundary surfaces are taken to be totally geodesic, we obtain a tg-hyperbolic structure with a unique associated volume. We prove that all virtual alternating links are tg-hyperbolic. We further extend tg-hyperbolicity to several classes of non-alternating virtual links. We then consider bounds on volumes of virtual links and include a table for volumes of the 116 nontrivial virtual knots of four or fewer crossings, all of which, with the exception of the trefoil knot, turn out to be tg-hyperbolic.

Matrix Modeling of Energy Hub with Variable Energy Efficiencies

The modeling of multi-energy systems (MES) is the basic task of analyzing energy systems integration. The variable energy efficiencies of the energy conversion and storage components in MES introduce nonlinearity to the model and thus complicate the analysis and optimization of MES. In this paper, we propose a standardized matrix modeling approach to automatically model MES with variable energy efficiencies based on the energy hub (EH) modeling framework. We use piecewise linearization to approximate the variable energy efficiencies; as a result, a component with variable efficiency is equivalent to several parallel components with constant efficiencies. The nonlinear energy conversion and storage relationship in EH can thus be further modeled under a linear modeling framework using matrices. Such matrix modeling approach makes the modeling of an arbitrary EH with nonlinear energy components highly automated by computers. The proposed modeling approach can further facilitate the operation and planning optimization of EH with variable efficiencies. Case studies are presented to show how the nonlinear approximation accuracy and calculation efficiency can be balanced using the proposed model in the optimal operation of EH.

PSR J1926-0652: A Pulsar with Interesting Emission Properties Discovered at FAST

We describe PSR J1926-0652, a pulsar recently discovered with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Using sensitive single-pulse detections from FAST and long-term timing observations from the Parkes 64-m radio telescope, we probed phenomena on both long and short time scales. The FAST observations covered a wide frequency range from 270 to 800 MHz, enabling individual pulses to be studied in detail. The pulsar exhibits at least four profile components, short-term nulling lasting from 4 to 450 pulses, complex subpulse drifting behaviours and intermittency on scales of tens of minutes. While the average band spacing P3 is relatively constant across different bursts and components, significant variations in the separation of adjacent bands are seen, especially near the beginning and end of a burst. Band shapes and slopes are quite variable, especially for the trailing components and for the shorter bursts. We show that for each burst the last detectable pulse prior to emission ceasing has different properties compared to other pulses. These complexities pose challenges for the classic carousel-type models.

Gravitational Production of Superheavy Dark Matter and Associated Cosmological Signatures

We study the gravitational production of super-Hubble-mass dark matter in the very early universe. We first review the simplest scenario where dark matter is produced mainly during slow roll inflation. Then we move on to consider the cases where dark matter is produced during the transition period between inflation and the subsequent cosmological evolution. The limits of smooth and sudden transitions are studied, respectively. The relic abundances and the cosmological collider signals are calculated.

G-networks and the optimization of supply chains

Supply chains are fundamental to the economy of the world and many supply chains focus on perishable items, such as food, or even clothing that is subject to a limited shelf life due to fashion and seasonable effects. G-networks have not been previously applied to this important area. Thus in this paper, we apply G-networks to supply chain systems and investigate an optimal order allocation problem for a N-node supply chain with perishable products that share the same order source of fresh products. The objective is to find an optimal order allocation strategy to minimize the purchase price per object from the perspective of the customers. An analytical solution based on G-networks with batch removal, together with optimization methods are shown to produce the desired results. The results are illustrated by a numerical example with realistic parameters.

Designing wildlife crossing structures for ungulates in a desert landscape: A case study in China

This paper reports on the design of wildlife crossing structures (WCSs) along a new expressway in China, which exemplifies the country's increasing efforts on wildlife protection in infrastructure projects. The expert knowledge and field surveys were used to determine the target species in the study area and the quantity, locations, size, and type of the WCSs. The results on relative abundance index and encounter rate showed that the ibex (\textit{Capra ibex}), argali sheep (Ovis ammon), and goitered gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) are the main ungulates in the study area. Among them, the goitered gazelle is the most widely distributed species. WCSs were proposed based on the estimated crossing hotspots. The mean deviation distance between those hotspots and their nearest proposed WCSs is around 341m. In addition, those 16 proposed underpass WCSs have a width of no less than 12m and height of no lower than 3.5m, which is believed to be sufficient for ungulates in the area. Given the limited availability of high-resolution movement data and wildlife-vehicle collision data during road's early design stage, the approach demonstrated in this paper facilitates practical spatial planning and provides insights into designing WCSs in a desert landscape.

Vanishing viscosity limit to the planar rarefaction wave for the two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations

The vanishing viscosity limit of the two-dimensional (2D) compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations is studied in the case that the corresponding 2D inviscid Euler equations admit a planar rarefaction wave solution. It is proved that there exists a family of smooth solutions for the 2D compressible Navier-Stokes equations converging to the planar rarefaction wave solution with arbitrary strength for the 2D Euler equations. A uniform convergence rate is obtained in terms of the viscosity coefficients away from the initial time. In the proof, the hyperbolic wave is crucially introduced to recover the physical viscosities of the inviscid rarefaction wave profile, in order to rigorously justify the vanishing viscosity limit.

The least H-eigenvalue of signless Laplacian of non-odd-bipartite hypergraphs

Let $G$ be a connected non-odd-bipartite hypergraph with even uniformity. The least H-eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian tensor of $G$ is simply called the least eigenvalue of $G$ and the corresponding H-eigenvectors are called the first eigenvectors of $G$. In this paper we give some numerical and structural properties about the first eigenvectors of $G$ which contains an odd-bipartite branch, and investigate how the least eigenvalue of $G$ changes when an odd-bipartite branch attached at one vertex is relocated to another vertex. We characterize the hypergraph(s) whose least eigenvalue attains the minimum among a certain class of hypergraphs which contain a fixed non-odd-bipartite connected hypergraph. Finally we present some upper bounds of the least eigenvalue and prove that zero is the least limit point of the least eigenvalues of connected non-odd-bipartite hypergraphs.

Stability of the planar rarefaction wave to two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations

It is well-known that the rarefaction wave, one of the basic wave patterns to the hyperbolic conservation laws, is nonlinearly stable to the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations (cf. [14,15,12,17]). In the present paper we proved the time-asymptotically nonlinear stability of the planar rarefaction wave to the two-dimensional compressible and isentropic Navier-Stokes equations, which gives the first stability result of the planar rarefaction wave to the multi-dimensional system with physical viscosities.

Nonlinear stability of planar rarefaction wave to the three-dimensional Boltzmann equation

We investigate the time-asymptotic stability of planar rarefaction wave for the three-dimensional Boltzmann equation, based on the micro-macro decomposition introduced in [24, 22] and our new observations on the underlying wave structures of the equation to overcome the difficulties due to the wave propagation along the transverse directions and its interactions with the planar rarefaction wave. Note that this is the first stability result of planar rarefaction wave for 3D Boltzmann equation, while the corresponding results for the shock and contact discontinuities are still completely open.

Stability of planar rarefaction wave to 3D full compressible Navier-Stokes equations

We prove the time-asymptotic stability toward planar rarefaction wave for the three-dimensional full compressible Navier-Stokes equations in an infinite long flat nozzle domain $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{T}^2$. Compared with one-dimensional case, the proof here is based on our new observations on the cancellations on the flux terms and viscous terms due to the underlying wave structures, which are crucial to overcome the difficulties due to the wave propagation along the transverse directions $x_2$ and $x_3$ and its interactions with the planar rarefaction wave in $x_1$ direction.
