Energy-Efficient Cooperative Secure Transmission in Multi-UAV Enabled Wireless Networks

This paper investigates a multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) enabled cooperative secure transmission scheme in the presence of multiple potential eavesdroppers. Specifically, multiple source UAVs (SUAVs) send confidential information to multiple legitimate ground users and in the meantime multiple jamming UAVs (JUAVs) cooperatively transmit interference signals to multiple eavesdroppers in order to improve the legitimate users' achievable secrecy rate. By taking into account the limited energy budget of UAV, our goal is to maximize the system secrecy energy efficiency (SEE), namely the achievable secrecy rate per energy consumption unit, by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory, transmit power and user scheduling under the constraints of UAV mobility as well as the maximum transmit power. The resulting optimization problem is shown to be a non-convex and mixed-integer fractional optimization problem, which is challenging to solve. We decompose the original problem into three sub-problems, and then an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed by leveraging the block coordinate descent and Dinkelbach method in combination with successive convex approximation techniques. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the other benchmarks significantly in terms of the system SEE.

Fully Decoupled Neural Network Learning Using Delayed Gradients

Training neural networks with back-propagation (BP) requires a sequential passing of activations and gradients, which forces the network modules to work in a synchronous fashion. This has been recognized as the lockings (i.e., the forward, backward and update lockings) inherited from the BP. In this paper, we propose a fully decoupled training scheme using delayed gradients (FDG) to break all these lockings. The FDG splits a neural network into multiple modules and trains them independently and asynchronously using different workers (e.g., GPUs). We also introduce a gradient shrinking process to reduce the stale gradient effect caused by the delayed gradients. In addition, we prove that the proposed FDG algorithm guarantees a statistical convergence during training. Experiments are conducted by training deep convolutional neural networks to perform classification tasks on benchmark datasets, showing comparable or better results against the state-of-the-art methods as well as the BP in terms of both generalization and acceleration abilities. In particular, we show that the FDG is also able to train very wide networks (e.g., WRN-28-10) and extremely deep networks (e.g., ResNet-1202). Code is available at https://github.com/ZHUANGHP/FDG.

Fast Power System Cascading Failure Path Searching with High Wind Power Penetration

Cascading failures have become a severe threat to interconnected modern power systems. The ultrahigh complexity of the interconnected networks is the main challenge toward the understanding and management of cascading failures. In addition, high penetration of wind power integration introduces large uncertainties and further complicates the problem into a massive scenario simulation problem. This paper proposes a framework that enables a fast cascading path searching under high penetration of wind power. In addition, we ease the computational burden by formulating the cascading path searching problem into a Markov chain searching problem and further use a dictionary-based technique to accelerate the calculations. In detail, we first generate massive wind generation and load scenarios. Then, we utilize the Markov search strategy to decouple the problem into a large number of DC power flow (DCPF) and DC optimal power flow (DCOPF) problems. The major time-consuming part, the DCOPF and the DCPF problems, is accelerated by the dynamic construction of a line status dictionary (LSD). The information in the LSD can significantly ease the computation burden of the following DCPF and DCOPF problems. The proposed method is proven to be effective by a case study of the IEEE RTS-79 test system and an empirical study of China's Henan Province power system.

Unveiling Elite Developers' Activities in Open Source Projects

Open-source developers, particularly the elite developers, maintain a diverse portfolio of contributing activities. They do not only commit source code but also spend a significant amount of effort on other communicative, organizational, and supportive activities. However, almost all prior research focuses on a limited number of specific activities and fails to analyze elite developers' activities in a comprehensive way. To bridge this gap, we conduct an empirical study with fine-grained event data from 20 large open-source projects hosted on GitHub. Thus, we investigate elite developers' contributing activities and their impacts on project outcomes. Our analyses reveal three key findings: (1) they participate in a variety of activities while technical contributions (e.g., coding) accounting for a small proportion only; (2) they tend to put more effort into supportive and communicative activities and less effort into coding as the project grows; (3) their participation in non-technical activities is negatively associated with the project's outcomes in term of productivity and software quality. These results provide a panoramic view of elite developers' activities and can inform an individual's decision making about effort allocation, thus leading to finer project outcomes. The results also provide implications for supporting these elite developers.

On a fully nonlinear sharp Sobolev trace inequality

We classify local minimizers of $\intσ_2+\oint H_2$ among all conformally flat metrics in the Euclidean $(n+1)$-ball, $4\leq n\leq 5$, for which the boundary has unit volume, subject to an ellipticity assumption. We also classify local minimizers of the analogous functional in the critical dimension $n+1=4$. If minimizers exist, this implies a fully nonlinear sharp Sobolev trace inequality. Our proof is an adaptation of the Frank--Lieb proof of the sharp Sobolev inequality, and in particular does not rely on symmetrization or Obata-type arguments.

A detailed study on the intrinsic time resolution of the future MRPC detector

A challenging goal of 20 ps for the total time resolution of the Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPCs) system has been recently addressed by high energy physics experiments. In order to meet this requirement, one should have a deeper understanding of the detector physics and the factors that contribute to the intrinsic time resolution of the MRPC, which are studied in this paper. The sources of the timing uncertainties, their influences and the relationship with the detector geometry are analyzed. A comparison between the time resolutions obtained using two different simulation algorithms is presented. The obtained results are useful for the design of the timing MRPCs with an improved performance, and meanwhile offer guidance for the R&D activities in the field.

Improving the spatial resolution of NICA/MPD ECAL with new reconstruction methods

A Shashlyk-type electromagnetic calorimeter (ECal) will be used in the Multi-purpose Detector at Nuclotron-based Ion Collider facility to study the properties of nuclear matter. In this experiment, the ECal detector is responsible for measuring the energy and position of the incident particles, and identifying them with the information obtained from itself and other detectors. This paper analyzes the position resolution of the Tsinghua ECal modules using the data from a beam test in DESY. Several reconstruction methods are studied in detail. With a deep learning based algorithm, the position resolution of the prototypes achieves less than 3.8 mm for 1.6 GeV electron beam, which is improved by about 30% compared to that of traditional charge center of gravity method.

On mixed graphs whose Hermitian spectral radii are at most 2

A mixed graph is a graph with undirected and directed edges. Guo and Mohar in 2017 determined all mixed graphs whose Hermitian spectral radii are less than $2$. In this paper, we give a sufficient condition which can make Hermitian spectral radius of a connected mixed graph strictly decreasing when an edge or a vertex is deleted, and characterize all mixed graphs with Hermitian spectral radii at most $2$ and with no cycle of length $4$ in their underlying graphs.

Scalable Traffic Engineering for Higher Throughput in Heavily-loaded Software Defined Networks

Existing traffic engineering (TE) solutions performs well for software defined network (SDN) in average cases. However, during peak hours, bursty traffic spikes are challenging to handle, because it is difficult to react in time and guarantee high performance even after failures with limited flow entries. Instead of leaving some capacity empty to guarantee no congestion happens due to traffic rerouting after failures or path updating after demand or topology changes, we decide to make full use of the network capacity to satisfy the demands for heavily-loaded peak hours. The TE system also needs to react to failures quickly and utilize the priority queue to guarantee the transmission of loss and delay sensitive traffic. We propose TED, a scalable TE system that can guarantee high throughput in peak hours. TED can quickly compute a group of maximum number of edge-disjoint paths for each ingress-egress switch pair. We design two methods to select paths under the flow entry limit. We then input the selected paths to our TE to minimize the maximum link utilization. In case of large traffic matrix making the maximum link utilization larger than 1, we input the utilization and the traffic matrix to the optimization of maximizing overall throughput under a new constrain. Thus we obtain a realistic traffic matrix, which has the maximum overall throughput and guarantees no traffic starvation for each switch pair. Experiments show that TED has much better performance for heavily-loaded SDN and has 10% higher probability to satisfy all (> 99.99%) the traffic after a single link failure for G-Scale topology than Smore under the same flow entry limit.

Quantum Creation of a Toy Universe without Inflation

We propose a toy model for the origin of the universe, where the scale-invariant fluctuations are generated together with the quantum creation process of the universe. The fluctuations arise inside an instanton in the Euclidean domain of time. In the Lorentzian point of view, the universe emerges with passive, coherent and scale-invariant fluctuations present from the beginning, without the need of inflation or a bounce. For this mechanism to work, we need anisotropic scaling in space and time, which is realized in a toy model of Horava-Lifshitz gravity with a Lifshitz scalar field.

Improving Performance of Tin-Doped-Zinc-Oxide Thin-Film Transistors by Optimized Multi-Stacked Active-Layer Structures

In this paper, we investigated the performance of thin-film transistors (TFTs) with different channel configurations including single-active-layer (SAL) Sn-Zn-O (TZO), dual-active-layers (DAL) In-Sn-O (ITO)/TZO, and triple-active-layers (TAL) TZO/ITO/TZO. The TAL TFTs were found to combine the advantages of SAL TFTs (a low off-state current) and DAL TFTs (a high mobility and a low threshold voltage). The proposed TAL TFTs exhibit superior electrical performance, e.g. a high on-off state current ratio of 2*10^8, a low threshold voltage of 0.52 V, a high saturation mobility of 145.2 cm2/Vs, and a low off-state current of 3.3 pA. The surface morphology and characteristics of the ITO and TZO films were investigated and the TZO film was found to be C-axis-aligned crystalline (CAAC). A simplified resistance model was deduced to explain the high channel resistance of TAL TFTs. At last, TAL TFTs with different channel lengths were also discussed to show the stability and the uniformity of our fabrication process. Owing to its low-processing temperature, superior electrical performance, and low cost, TFTs with the proposed TAL channel configuration are highly promising for flexible displays where the use of heat-sensitive polymeric substrates is desirable.

A Statistical Study of Solar Filament Eruptions That Forms High-Speed Coronal Mass Ejections

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) play a decisive role in driving space weather, especially, the fast ones (e.g., with speeds above $800$~km~s$^{-1}$). Understanding the trigger mechanisms of fast CMEs can help us gaining important information in forecasting them. The filament eruptions accompanied with CMEs provide a good tracer in studying the early evolution of CMEs. Here we surveyed 66 filament-accompanied fast CMEs to analyse the correlation between the trigger mechanisms, namely either magnetic reconnection or ideal MHD process, associated flares, and CME speeds. Based on the data gathering from SDO, GONG and STEREO, we find that: (1) Active region (AR) filament and intermediate filaments (IFs) eruptions show a higher probability for producing fast CMEs than quiet Sun (QS) filaments, while the probability of polar crown (PC) filament eruptions is zero in our statistic; (2) AR filament eruptions that produce fast CMEs are more likely triggered by magnetic reconnection, while QS and IFs are more likely triggered by ideal MHD process; (3) For AR filaments and IFs, it seems that the specific trigger mechanism does not have a significant influence on the resulted CME speeds, while for the QS filaments, the ideal MHD mechanism can more likely generate a faster CME; (4) Comparing with previous statistic study, the onset heights of filament eruptions and the decay indexes of the overlying field show some differences: for AR filaments and IFs, the decay indexes are larger and much closer to the theoretical threshold, while for QS filaments, the onset heights are higher than those obtained in previous results.

A Sharp Inequality of Hardy-Littlewood Type Via Derivatives

In this paper we consider a generalized version of Carleman's inequality. An equivalent version of it states that $\|f\|_{A_α^{2α}}\leq\|f\|_{H^2}$, where $f$ is a holomorphic function and $α>1$. If the norms $\|f\|_{A_α^{2α}}$ are decreasing in $α$, then the inequality holds for $f$. For a dense set of functions, we calculate the derivative of the norms $\|f\|_{A_α^{2α}}$ in $α$ and give sufficient conditions for this derivative to be non-positive. As an application, we prove the inequality for linear combinations of two reproducing kernels. Some numerical evidences are also provided.

Bridging Commonsense Reasoning and Probabilistic Planning via a Probabilistic Action Language

To be responsive to dynamically changing real-world environments, an intelligent agent needs to perform complex sequential decision-making tasks that are often guided by commonsense knowledge. The previous work on this line of research led to the framework called "interleaved commonsense reasoning and probabilistic planning" (icorpp), which used P-log for representing commmonsense knowledge and Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) or Partially Observable MDPs (POMDPs) for planning under uncertainty. A main limitation of icorpp is that its implementation requires non-trivial engineering efforts to bridge the commonsense reasoning and probabilistic planning formalisms. In this paper, we present a unified framework to integrate icorpp's reasoning and planning components. In particular, we extend probabilistic action language pBC+ to express utility, belief states, and observation as in POMDP models. Inheriting the advantages of action languages, the new action language provides an elaboration tolerant representation of POMDP that reflects commonsense knowledge. The idea led to the design of the system pbcplus2pomdp, which compiles a pBC+ action description into a POMDP model that can be directly processed by off-the-shelf POMDP solvers to compute an optimal policy of the pBC+ action description. Our experiments show that it retains the advantages of icorpp while avoiding the manual efforts in bridging the commonsense reasoner and the probabilistic planner.

A Cosmological Higgs Collider

The quantum fluctuations of the Higgs field during inflation could be a source of primordial density perturbations through Higgs-dependent inflaton decay. By measuring primordial non-Gaussianities, this so-called Higgs-modulated reheating scenario provides us a unique chance to probe Higgs interactions at extremely high energy scale, which we call the Cosmological Higgs Collider (CHC). We realize CHC in a simple scenario where the inflaton decays into Higgs-portal scalars, taking account of the decay of the Higgs fluctuation amplitude after inflation. We also calculate the CHC signals of Standard Model particles, namely their imprints in the squeezed bispectrum, which can be naturally large. The concept of CHC can be straightforwardly generalized to cosmological isocurvature colliders with other types of isocurvature perturbations.

Evaluating bird collision risk of a high-speed railway crossing the habitat of the crested ibis (Nipponia nippon) in Qinling Mountains, China

Bird collisions with high-speed transport modes is a vital topic on vehicle safety and wildlife protection, especially when high-speed trains, with an average speed of 250km/h, have to run across the habitat of an endangered bird species. This paper evaluates the bird-train collision risk associated with a recent high-speed railway project in Qinling Mountains, China, for the crested ibis (Nipponia nippon) and other local bird species. Using line transect surveys and walking monitoring techniques, we surveyed the population abundance, spatial-temporal distributions, and bridge-crossing behaviors of the birds in the study area. The results show that: (1) The crested ibis and the egret were the two most abundant waterfowl species in the study area. The RAI of these two species were about 43.69% and 42.91%, respectively; (2) Crested ibises overall habitat closer to the railway bridge. 91.63% of them were firstly detected within the range of 0m to 25m of the vicinity of the bridge; (3) the ratio between crossing over and under the railway bridge was about 7:3. Crested ibises were found to prefer to fly over the railway bridge (89.29% of the total crossing activities observed for this species). Egrets were more likely to cross the railway below the bridge, and they accounted for 60.27% of the total observations of crossing under the bridge. We recommend that, while the collision risk of crested ibises could be low, barrier-like structures, such as fences, should still be considered to promote the conservation of multiple bird species in the area. This paper provides a practical case for railway ecology studies in China. To our best knowledge, this is the first high-speed railway project that takes protecting crested ibises as one of the top priorities, and exemplifies the recent nationwide initiative towards the construction of "eco-civilization" in the country.
