Hierarchical Black Hole Mergers in Active Galactic Nuclei

The origins of the stellar-mass black hole mergers discovered by LIGO/Virgo are still unknown. Here we show that, if migration traps develop in the \add{accretion} disks of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) and promote the mergers of their captive black holes, the majority of black holes within disks will undergo hierarchical mergers---with one of the black holes being the remnant of a previous merger. 40% of AGN-assisted mergers detected by LIGO/Virgo will include a black hole with mass $\gtrsim 50$ M$_\odot$, the mass limit from stellar core collapse. Hierarchical mergers at traps in AGNs will exhibit black hole spins (anti-)aligned with the binary's orbital axis, a distinct property from other hierarchical channels. Our results are suggestive, although not definitive (with Odds ratio of $\sim 1$), that LIGO's heaviest merger so far, GW170729, could have originated from this channel.

Lightning-Fast and Privacy-Preserving Outsourced Computation in the Cloud

In this paper, we propose a framework for lightning-fast privacy-preserving outsourced computation framework in the cloud, which we refer to as LightCom. Using LightCom, a user can securely achieve the outsource data storage and fast secure data processing in a single cloud server different from the existing multi-server outsourced computation model. Specifically, we first present a general secure computation framework for LightCom under the cloud server equipped with multiple Trusted Processing Units (TPUs) which face the side-channel attack. Under the LightCom, we design two specified fast processing toolkits which allow the user to achieve the commonly-used secure integer computation and secure floating-point computation against the side-channel information leakage of TPUs, respectively. Furthermore, our LightCom can also guarantee access pattern protection during the data processing and achieve user private information retrieve after the computation. We prove that the proposed LightCom can successfully achieve the goal of single cloud outsourced data processing to avoid the extra computation server and trusted computation server, and demonstrate the utility and the efficiency of LightCom using simulations.

CANZSL: Cycle-Consistent Adversarial Networks for Zero-Shot Learning from Natural Language

Existing methods using generative adversarial approaches for Zero-Shot Learning (ZSL) aim to generate realistic visual features from class semantics by a single generative network, which is highly under-constrained. As a result, the previous methods cannot guarantee that the generated visual features can truthfully reflect the corresponding semantics. To address this issue, we propose a novel method named Cycle-consistent Adversarial Networks for Zero-Shot Learning (CANZSL). It encourages a visual feature generator to synthesize realistic visual features from semantics, and then inversely translate back synthesized the visual feature to corresponding semantic space by a semantic feature generator. Furthermore, in this paper a more challenging and practical ZSL problem is considered where the original semantics are from natural language with irrelevant words instead of clean semantics that are widely used in previous work. Specifically, a multi-modal consistent bidirectional generative adversarial network is trained to handle unseen instances by leveraging noise in the natural language. A forward one-to-many mapping from one text description to multiple visual features is coupled with an inverse many-to-one mapping from the visual space to the semantic space. Thus, a multi-modal cycle-consistency loss between the synthesized semantic representations and the ground truth can be learned and leveraged to enforce the generated semantic features to approximate to the real distribution in semantic space. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate that our method consistently outperforms state-of-the-art approaches on natural language-based zero-shot learning tasks.

Inverse transport problem in fluorescence ultrasound modulated optical tomography with angularly averaged measurements

We consider an inverse transport problem in fluorescence ultrasound modulated optical tomography (fUMOT) with angularly averaged illuminations and measurements. We study the uniqueness and stability of the reconstruction of the absorption coefficient and the quantum efficiency of the fluorescent probes. Reconstruction algorithms are proposed and numerical validations are performed as well. This paper is an extension of arXiv:1804.01135, where a diffusion model for this problem was considered.

Alleviating Feature Confusion for Generative Zero-shot Learning

Lately, generative adversarial networks (GANs) have been successfully applied to zero-shot learning (ZSL) and achieved state-of-the-art performance. By synthesizing virtual unseen visual features, GAN-based methods convert the challenging ZSL task into a supervised learning problem. However, GAN-based ZSL methods have to train the generator on the seen categories and further apply it to unseen instances. An inevitable issue of such a paradigm is that the synthesized unseen features are prone to seen references and incapable to reflect the novelty and diversity of real unseen instances. In a nutshell, the synthesized features are confusing. One cannot tell unseen categories from seen ones using the synthesized features. As a result, the synthesized features are too subtle to be classified in generalized zero-shot learning (GZSL) which involves both seen and unseen categories at the test stage. In this paper, we first introduce the feature confusion issue. Then, we propose a new feature generating network, named alleviating feature confusion GAN (AFC-GAN), to challenge the issue. Specifically, we present a boundary loss which maximizes the decision boundary of seen categories and unseen ones. Furthermore, a novel metric named feature confusion score (FCS) is proposed to quantify the feature confusion. Extensive experiments on five widely used datasets verify that our method is able to outperform previous state-of-the-arts under both ZSL and GZSL protocols.

Simultaneous reconstruction of the initial pressure and sound speed in photoacoustic tomography using a deep-learning approach

Photoacoustic tomography seeks to reconstruct an acoustic initial pressure distribution from the measurement of the ultrasound waveforms. Conventional methods assume a-prior knowledge of the sound speed distribution, which practically is unknown. One way to circumvent the issue is to simultaneously reconstruct both the acoustic initial pressure and speed. In this article, we develop a novel data-driven method that integrates an advanced deep neural network through model-based iteration. The image of the initial pressure is significantly improved in our numerical simulation.

A low-energy compact Shanghai-Wuhan electron beam ion trap for extraction of highly charged ions

A low-energy, compact and superconducting electron beam ion trap (the Shanghai-Wuhan EBIT or SW-EBIT) for extraction of highly charged ions is presented. The magnetic field in the central drift tube of the SW-EBIT is approximately 0.21 T produced by a pair of high-temperature superconducting coils. The electron-beam energy of the SW-EBIT is in the range of 30-4000 eV, and the maximum electron-beam current is up to 9 mA. Acting as a source of highly charged ions, the ion-beam optics for extraction is integrated, including an ion extractor and an einzel lens. A Wien filter is then used to measure the charge-state distribution of the extracted ions. In this work, the tungsten ions below the charge state of 15 have been produced, extracted, and analyzed. The charge-state distributions and spectra in the range of 530-580 nm of tungsten ions have been measured simultaneously with the electron-beam energy of 279 eV and 300 eV, which preliminarily indicates that the 549.9 nm line comes from $W^{14+}$.

Curiosity-driven Reinforcement Learning for Diverse Visual Paragraph Generation

Visual paragraph generation aims to automatically describe a given image from different perspectives and organize sentences in a coherent way. In this paper, we address three critical challenges for this task in a reinforcement learning setting: the mode collapse, the delayed feedback, and the time-consuming warm-up for policy networks. Generally, we propose a novel Curiosity-driven Reinforcement Learning (CRL) framework to jointly enhance the diversity and accuracy of the generated paragraphs. First, by modeling the paragraph captioning as a long-term decision-making process and measuring the prediction uncertainty of state transitions as intrinsic rewards, the model is incentivized to memorize precise but rarely spotted descriptions to context, rather than being biased towards frequent fragments and generic patterns. Second, since the extrinsic reward from evaluation is only available until the complete paragraph is generated, we estimate its expected value at each time step with temporal-difference learning, by considering the correlations between successive actions. Then the estimated extrinsic rewards are complemented by dense intrinsic rewards produced from the derived curiosity module, in order to encourage the policy to fully explore action space and find a global optimum. Third, discounted imitation learning is integrated for learning from human demonstrations, without separately performing the time-consuming warm-up in advance. Extensive experiments conducted on the Standford image-paragraph dataset demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method, improving the performance by 38.4% compared with state-of-the-art.

Bounds on the $α$-distance spectrum of graphs

For a simple, undirected and connected graph $G$, $D_α(G) = αTr(G) + (1-α) D(G)$ is called the $α$-distance matrix of $G$, where $α\in [0,1]$, $D(G)$ is the distance matrix of $G$, and $Tr(G)$ is the vertex transmission diagonal matrix of $G$. Recently, the $α$-distance energy of $G$ was defined based on the spectra of $D_α(G)$. In this paper, we define the $α$-distance Estrada index of $G$ in terms of the eigenvalues of $D_α(G)$. And we give some bounds on the spectral radius of $D_α(G)$, $α$-distance energy and $α$-distance Estrada index of $G$.

ABD-Net: Attentive but Diverse Person Re-Identification

Attention mechanism has been shown to be effective for person re-identification (Re-ID). However, the learned attentive feature embeddings which are often not naturally diverse nor uncorrelated, will compromise the retrieval performance based on the Euclidean distance. We advocate that enforcing diversity could greatly complement the power of attention. To this end, we propose an Attentive but Diverse Network (ABD-Net), which seamlessly integrates attention modules and diversity regularization throughout the entire network, to learn features that are representative, robust, and more discriminative. Specifically, we introduce a pair of complementary attention modules, focusing on channel aggregation and position awareness, respectively. Furthermore, a new efficient form of orthogonality constraint is derived to enforce orthogonality on both hidden activations and weights. Through careful ablation studies, we verify that the proposed attentive and diverse terms each contributes to the performance gains of ABD-Net. On three popular benchmarks, ABD-Net consistently outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods.

Flat Bands in Twisted Bilayers of Two-Dimensional Polar Materials

The existence of Bloch flat bands provides an facile pathway to realize strongly correlated phenomena in materials. Using density-functional theory and tight-binding approach, we show that the flat bands can form in twisted bilayer of hexagonal boron nitride ($h$BN). However, unlike the twisted graphene bilayer where a magic angle is needed to form the flat band, for the polar $h$BN, the flat bands can appear as long as the twisted angle is less than certain critical values. Our simulations reveal that the valence band maximum (conduction band minimum) states are predominantly resided in the regions of the moiré supperlattice where the anion N (cation B) atoms in both layers are on top of each other. The preferential localization of these valence and conduction states originate from the chemical potential difference between N and B and is enhanced by the stacking effects of N and B in both layers, respectively, as demonstrated by an analysis of the energy level order of the $h$BN bilayers with different stacking patterns. When these states are spatially localized because regions with a specific stacking pattern are isolated for moiré supperlattices at sufficient small twist angle, completely flat bands will form. This mechanism is applicable to other twisted bilayers of two-dimensional polar crystals.

BASN -- Learning Steganography with Binary Attention Mechanism

Secret information sharing through image carrier has aroused much research attention in recent years with images' growing domination on the Internet and mobile applications. However, with the booming trend of convolutional neural networks, image steganography is facing a more significant challenge from neural-network-automated tasks. To improve the security of image steganography and minimize task result distortion, models must maintain the feature maps generated by task-specific networks being irrelative to any hidden information embedded in the carrier. This paper introduces a binary attention mechanism into image steganography to help alleviate the security issue, and in the meanwhile, increase embedding payload capacity. The experimental results show that our method has the advantage of high payload capacity with little feature map distortion and still resist detection by state-of-the-art image steganalysis algorithms.

Effective Estimation of Contact Force and Torque for Vision-based Tactile Sensor with Helmholtz-Hodge Decomposition

Retrieving rich contact information from robotic tactile sensing has been a challenging, yet significant task for the effective perception of object properties that the robot interacts with. This work is dedicated to developing an algorithm to estimate contact force and torque for vision-based tactile sensors. We first introduce the observation of the contact deformation patterns of hyperelastic materials under ideal single-axial loads in simulation. Then based on the observation, we propose a method of estimating surface forces and torque from the contact deformation vector field with the Helmholtz-Hodge Decomposition (HHD) algorithm. Extensive experiments of calibration and baseline comparison are followed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of prediction error and variance. The proposed algorithm is further integrated into a contact force visualization module as well as a closed-loop adaptive grasp force control framework and is shown to be useful in both visualization of contact stability and minimum force grasping task.

From Zero-Shot Learning to Cold-Start Recommendation

Zero-shot learning (ZSL) and cold-start recommendation (CSR) are two challenging problems in computer vision and recommender system, respectively. In general, they are independently investigated in different communities. This paper, however, reveals that ZSL and CSR are two extensions of the same intension. Both of them, for instance, attempt to predict unseen classes and involve two spaces, one for direct feature representation and the other for supplementary description. Yet there is no existing approach which addresses CSR from the ZSL perspective. This work, for the first time, formulates CSR as a ZSL problem, and a tailor-made ZSL method is proposed to handle CSR. Specifically, we propose a Low-rank Linear Auto-Encoder (LLAE), which challenges three cruxes, i.e., domain shift, spurious correlations and computing efficiency, in this paper. LLAE consists of two parts, a low-rank encoder maps user behavior into user attributes and a symmetric decoder reconstructs user behavior from user attributes. Extensive experiments on both ZSL and CSR tasks verify that the proposed method is a win-win formulation, i.e., not only can CSR be handled by ZSL models with a significant performance improvement compared with several conventional state-of-the-art methods, but the consideration of CSR can benefit ZSL as well.

Partial Computing Offloading Assisted Cloud Point Registration in Multi-robot SLAM

Multi-robot visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) system is normally consisted of multiple mobile robots equipped with camera and/or other visual sensors. The networked robots work independently or cooperatively in an unknown scene in order to solve autonomous localization and mapping problem. One of the most critical issues in Multi-robot visual SLAM is the intensive computation that is normally required yet overwhelming for inexpensive mobile robots with limited on-board resources. To address this problem, a novel task offloading strategy and dense point cloud map construction method is proposed in this paper. First, we develop a novel strategy to remotely offload computation-intensive tasks to cloud center, so that the tasks that could not originally be achieved locally on the resource-limited robot systems become possible. Second, a modified iterative closest point algorithm (ICP), named fitness score hierarchical ICP algorithm (FS-HICP), is developed to accelerate point cloud registration. The correctness, efficiency, and scalability of the proposed strategy are evaluated with both theoretical analysis and experimental simulations. The results show that the proposed method can effectively reduce the energy consumption while increase the computation capability and speed of the multi-robot visual SLAM system, especially in indoor environment.

EncryptGAN: Image Steganography with Domain Transform

We propose an image steganographic algorithm called EncryptGAN, which disguises private image communication in an open communication channel. The insight is that content transform between two very different domains (e.g., face to flower) allows one to hide image messages in one domain (face) and communicate using its counterpart in another domain (flower). The key ingredient in our method, unlike related approaches, is a specially trained network to extract transformed images from both domains and use them as the public and private keys. We ensure the image communication remain secret except for the intended recipient even when the content transformation networks are exposed. To communicate, one directly pastes the `message' image onto a larger public key image (face). Depending on the location and content of the message image, the `disguise' image (flower) alters its appearance and shape while maintaining its overall objectiveness (flower). The recipient decodes the alternated image to uncover the original image message using its message image key. We implement the entire procedure as a constrained Cycle-GAN, where the public and the private key generating network is used as an additional constraint to the cycle consistency. Comprehensive experimental results show our EncryptGAN outperforms the state-of-arts in terms of both encryption and security measures.

Three-dimensional view of ultrafast dynamics in photoexcited bacteriorhodopsin

Bacteriorhodopsin (bR) is a light-driven proton pump. We use time-resolved crystallography at an X-ray free-electron laser to follow the structural changes in multiphoton-excited bR from 250 femtoseconds to 10 picoseconds. Quantum chemistry and ultrafast spectroscopy allow identifying a sequential two-photon absorption process, leading to excitation of a tryptophan residue flanking the retinal chromophore, as a first manifestation of multi-photon effects. We resolve distinct stages in the structural dynamics of the all-trans retinal in photoexcited bR to a highly twisted 13-cis conformation. Other active site sub-picosecond rearrangements include correlated vibrational motions of the electronically excited retinal chromophore, the surrounding amino acids and water molecules as well as their hydrogen bonding network. These results show that this extended photo-active network forms an electronically and vibrationally coupled system in bR, and most likely in all retinal proteins.

Existence of solutions for critical Choquard problem with singular coefficients

In this paper, we investigate the following fractional Choquard type equation: \[ (- Δ)_p^s\, u = λ\frac{|u|^{r-2}u}{|x|^α}\,+γ\big(\int_Ω\frac{|u|^q}{|x-y|^μ}dy\big) |u|^{q-2}u \ \ \text{in } Ω,\ \ u = 0 \ \text{in } \R^N \setminus Ω, \] where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\R^N$ with Lipschitz boundary, $p>1$, $0 sp$, $0\leqα\leq sp$, $0<μ 0$, $p\leq r\leq p^*_α$, $p\leq 2q\leq 2p_{μ,s}^*$, $p_α^*=\frac{(N-α)p}{N-sp}$ and $p_{μ,s}^*=\frac{(N-\fracμ{2})p}{N-sp}$ are the fractional critical Hardy-Sobolev and the critical exponents in the sense of Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality, respectively. Under some suitable assumptions, positive and sign-changing solutions are obtained.
