A Deep Learning Approach to Grasping the Invisible

We study an emerging problem named "grasping the invisible" in robotic manipulation, in which a robot is tasked to grasp an initially invisible target object via a sequence of pushing and grasping actions. In this problem, pushes are needed to search for the target and rearrange cluttered objects around it to enable effective grasps. We propose to solve the problem by formulating a deep learning approach in a critic-policy format. The target-oriented motion critic, which maps both visual observations and target information to the expected future rewards of pushing and grasping motion primitives, is learned via deep Q-learning. We divide the problem into two subtasks, and two policies are proposed to tackle each of them, by combining the critic predictions and relevant domain knowledge. A Bayesian-based policy accounting for past action experience performs pushing to search for the target; once the target is found, a classifier-based policy coordinates target-oriented pushing and grasping to grasp the target in clutter. The motion critic and the classifier are trained in a self-supervised manner through robot-environment interactions. Our system achieves a 93% and 87% task success rate on each of the two subtasks in simulation and an 85% task success rate in real robot experiments on the whole problem, which outperforms several baselines by large margins. Understanding Electricity-Theft Behavior via Multi-Source Data

Electricity theft, the behavior that involves users conducting illegal operations on electrical meters to avoid individual electricity bills, is a common phenomenon in the developing countries. Considering its harmfulness to both power grids and the public, several mechanized methods have been developed to automatically recognize electricity-theft behaviors. However, these methods, which mainly assess users' electricity usage records, can be insufficient due to the diversity of theft tactics and the irregularity of user behaviors. In this paper, we propose to recognize electricity-theft behavior via multi-source data. In addition to users' electricity usage records, we analyze user behaviors by means of regional factors (non-technical loss) and climatic factors (temperature) in the corresponding transformer area. By conducting analytical experiments, we unearth several interesting patterns: for instance, electricity thieves are likely to consume much more electrical power than normal users, especially under extremely high or low temperatures. Motivated by these empirical observations, we further design a novel hierarchical framework for identifying electricity thieves. Experimental results based on a real-world dataset demonstrate that our proposed model can achieve the best performance in electricity-theft detection (e.g., at least +3.0% in terms of F0.5) compared with several baselines. Last but not least, our work has been applied by the State Grid of China and used to successfully catch electricity thieves in Hangzhou with a precision of 15% (an improvement form 0% attained by several other models the company employed) during monthly on-site investigation.

SQLFlow: A Bridge between SQL and Machine Learning

Industrial AI systems are mostly end-to-end machine learning (ML) workflows. A typical recommendation or business intelligence system includes many online micro-services and offline jobs. We describe SQLFlow for developing such workflows efficiently in SQL. SQL enables developers to write short programs focusing on the purpose (what) and ignoring the procedure (how). Previous database systems extended their SQL dialect to support ML. SQLFlow (https://sqlflow.org/sqlflow ) takes another strategy to work as a bridge over various database systems, including MySQL, Apache Hive, and Alibaba MaxCompute, and ML engines like TensorFlow, XGBoost, and scikit-learn. We extended SQL syntax carefully to make the extension working with various SQL dialects. We implement the extension by inventing a collaborative parsing algorithm. SQLFlow is efficient and expressive to a wide variety of ML techniques -- supervised and unsupervised learning; deep networks and tree models; visual model explanation in addition to training and prediction; data processing and feature extraction in addition to ML. SQLFlow compiles a SQL program into a Kubernetes-native workflow for fault-tolerable execution and on-cloud deployment. Current industrial users include Ant Financial, DiDi, and Alibaba Group.

Convergence analysis of an inexact inertial Krasnoselskii-Mann algorithm with applications

The classical Krasnoselskii-Mann iteration is broadly used for approximating fixed points of nonexpansive operators. To accelerate the convergence of the Krasnoselskii-Mann iteration, the inertial methods were received much attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose an inexact inertial Krasnoselskii-Mann algorithm. In comparison with the original inertial Krasnoselskii-Mann algorithm, our algorithm allows error for updating the iterative sequence, which makes it more flexible and useful in practice. We establish weak convergence results for the proposed algorithm under different conditions on parameters and error terms. Furthermore, we provide a nonasymptotic convergence rate for the proposed algorithm. As applications, we propose and study inexact inertial proximal point algorithm and inexact inertial forward-backward splitting algorithm for solving monotone inclusion problems and the corresponding convex minimization problems.

Collisional-radiative modeling of the $5p-5s$ spectrum of W XIV - W XVI ions

The wavelength and rate of the $5p-5s$ transition of W XIV - W XVI ions have been calculated by the relativistic configuration interaction (RCI) method with the implementation of Flexible Atomic code (FAC). A reasonable collisional-radiative model (CRM) has been constructed to simulate the $5p - 5s$ transition spectrum of W XIV - W XVI ions which had been observed in electron beam ion trap (EBIT) device. The results are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental and theoretical data, and might be applied to identify the controversial spectra. The confusion on the assignment of the ionization stage are solved in the present work.

Cross-modal supervised learning for better acoustic representations

Obtaining large-scale human-labeled datasets to train acoustic representation models is a very challenging task. On the contrary, we can easily collect data with machine-generated labels. In this work, we propose to exploit machine-generated labels to learn better acoustic representations, based on the synchronization between vision and audio. Firstly, we collect a large-scale video dataset with 15 million samples, which totally last 16,320 hours. Each video is 3 to 5 seconds in length and annotated automatically by publicly available visual and audio classification models. Secondly, we train various classical convolutional neural networks (CNNs) including VGGish, ResNet 50 and Mobilenet v2. We also make several improvements to VGGish and achieve better results. Finally, we transfer our models on three external standard benchmarks for audio classification task, and achieve significant performance boost over the state-of-the-art results. Models and codes are available at: https://github.com/Deeperjia/vgg-like-audio-models.

X-LineNet: Detecting Aircraft in Remote Sensing Images by a pair of Intersecting Line Segments

Motivated by the development of deep convolution neural networks (DCNNs), tremendous progress has been gained in the field of aircraft detection. These DCNNs based detectors mainly belong to top-down approaches, which first enumerate massive potential locations of objects with the form of rectangular regions, and then identify whether they are objects or not. Compared with these top-down approaches, this paper shows that aircraft detection via bottom-up approach still performs competitively in the era of deep learning. We present a novel one-stage and anchor-free aircraft detection model in a bottom-up manner, which formulates the task as detection of two intersecting line segments inside each target and grouping of them without any rectangular region classification. This model is named as X-LineNet. With simple post-processing, X-LineNet can simultaneously provide multiple representation forms of the detection result: the horizontal bounding box, the rotating bounding box, and the pentagonal mask. The pentagonal mask is a more accurate representation form which has less redundancy and can better represent aircraft than that of rectangular box. Experiments show that X-LineNet outperforms state-of-the-art one-stage object detectors and is competitive compared with advanced two-stage detectors on both UCAS-AOD and NWPU VHR-10 open dataset in the field of aircraft detection.

In Defense of the Triplet Loss Again: Learning Robust Person Re-Identification with Fast Approximated Triplet Loss and Label Distillation

The comparative losses (typically, triplet loss) are appealing choices for learning person re-identification (ReID) features. However, the triplet loss is computationally much more expensive than the (practically more popular) classification loss, limiting their wider usage in massive datasets. Moreover, the abundance of label noise and outliers in ReID datasets may also put the margin-based loss in jeopardy. This work addresses the above two shortcomings of triplet loss, extending its effectiveness to large-scale ReID datasets with potentially noisy labels. We propose a fast-approximated triplet (FAT) loss, which provably converts the point-wise triplet loss into its upper bound form, consisting of a point-to-set loss term plus cluster compactness regularization. It preserves the effectiveness of triplet loss, while leading to linear complexity to the training set size. A label distillation strategy is further designed to learn refined soft-labels in place of the potentially noisy labels, from only an identified subset of confident examples, through teacher-student networks. We conduct extensive experiments on three most popular ReID benchmarks (Market-1501, DukeMTMC-reID, and MSMT17), and demonstrate that FAT loss with distilled labels lead to ReID features with remarkable accuracy, efficiency, robustness, and direct transferability to unseen datasets.

Monolayer NbF$_4$: a $4d^1$-analogue of cuprates

The electronic structure and possible electronic orders in monolayer NbF$_4$ are investigated by density functional theory and functional renormalization group. Because of the niobium-centered octahedra, the energy band near the Fermi level is found to derive from the $4d_{xy}$ orbital, well separated from the other bands. Local Coulomb interaction drives the undoped system into an antiferromagnetic insulator. Upon suitable electron/hole doping, the system is found to develop $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductivity with sizable transition temperature. Therefore, the monolayer NbF$_4$ may be an exciting $4d^1$ analogue of cuprates, providing a new two-dimensional platform for high-$T_c$ superconductivity.

The Disruptions of 5G on Data-driven Technologies and Applications

With 5G on the verge of being adopted as the next mobile network, there is a need to analyze its impact on the landscape of computing and data management. In this paper, we analyze the impact of 5G on both traditional and emerging technologies and project our view on future research challenges and opportunities. With a predicted increase of 10-100x in bandwidth and 5-10x decrease in latency, 5G is expected to be the main enabler for smart cities, smart IoT and efficient healthcare, where machine learning is conducted at the edge. In this context, we investigate how 5G can help the development of federated learning. Network slicing, another key feature of 5G, allows running multiple isolated networks on the same physical infrastructure. However, security remains the main concern in the context of virtualization, multi-tenancy and high device density. Formal verification of 5G networks can be applied to detect security issues in massive virtualized environments. In summary, 5G will make the world even more densely and closely connected. What we have experienced in 4G connectivity will pale in comparison to the vast amounts of possibilities engendered by 5G.

Inexact Block Coordinate Descent Algorithms for Nonsmooth Nonconvex Optimization

In this paper, we propose an inexact block coordinate descent algorithm for large-scale nonsmooth nonconvex optimization problems. At each iteration, a particular block variable is selected and updated by inexactly solving the original optimization problem with respect to that block variable. More precisely, a local approximation of the original optimization problem is solved. The proposed algorithm has several attractive features, namely, i) high flexibility, as the approximation function only needs to be strictly convex and it does not have to be a global upper bound of the original function; ii) fast convergence, as the approximation function can be designed to exploit the problem structure at hand and the stepsize is calculated by the line search; iii) low complexity, as the approximation subproblems are much easier to solve and the line search scheme is carried out over a properly constructed differentiable function; iv) guaranteed convergence of a subsequence to a stationary point, even when the objective function does not have a Lipschitz continuous gradient. Interestingly, when the approximation subproblem is solved by a descent algorithm, convergence of a subsequence to a stationary point is still guaranteed even if the approximation subproblem is solved inexactly by terminating the descent algorithm after a finite number of iterations. These features make the proposed algorithm suitable for large-scale problems where the dimension exceeds the memory and/or the processing capability of the existing hardware. These features are also illustrated by several applications in signal processing and machine learning, for instance, network anomaly detection and phase retrieval.

Generalized Constructions of Complementary Sets of Sequences of Lengths Non-Power-of-Two

The construction of complementary sets (CSs) of sequences with different set size and sequence length become important due to its practical application for OFDM systems. Most of the constructions of CSs, based on generalized Boolean functions (GBFs), are of length $2^α$ ($α$ is a natural number). Recently some works have been reported on construction of CSs having lengths non-power of two, i.e., in the form of $2^{m-1}+2^v$ ($m$ is natural number, $0\leq v <m $), $N+1$ and $N+2$, where $N$ is a length for which $q$-ary complementary pairs exist. In this paper, we propose a construction of CSs of lengths $M+N$ for set size $4n$, using concatenation of CSs of lengths $M$ and $N$, and set size $4n$, where $M$ and $N$ are lengths for which $q$-ary complementary pairs exists. Also, we construct CSs of length $M+P$ for set size $8n$ by concatenating CSs of lengths $M$ and $P$, and set size $8n$, where $M$ and $P$ are lengths for which $q$-ary complementary pairs and complementary sets of size $4$ exists, respectively. The proposed constructions cover all the previous constructions as special cases in terms of lengths and lead to more CSs of new sequence lengths which have not been reported before.

Calibrated Domain-Invariant Learning for Highly Generalizable Large Scale Re-Identification

Many real-world applications, such as city-scale traffic monitoring and control, requires large-scale re-identification. However, previous ReID methods often failed to address two limitations in existing ReID benchmarks, i.e., low spatiotemporal coverage and sample imbalance. Notwithstanding their demonstrated success in every single benchmark, they have difficulties in generalizing to unseen environments. As a result, these methods are less applicable in a large-scale setting due to poor generalization. In seek for a highly generalizable large-scale ReID method, we present an adversarial domain invariant feature learning framework (ADIN) that explicitly learns to separate identity-related features from challenging variations, where for the first time "free" annotations in ReID data such as video timestamp and camera index are utilized. Furthermore, we find that the imbalance of nuisance classes jeopardizes the adversarial training, and for mitigation we propose a calibrated adversarial loss that is attentive to nuisance distribution. Experiments on existing large-scale person vehicle ReID datasets demonstrate that ADIN learns more robust and generalizable representations, as evidenced by its outstanding direct transfer performance across datasets, which is a criterion that can better measure the generalizability of large-scale ReID methods/

LaFIn: Generative Landmark Guided Face Inpainting

It is challenging to inpaint face images in the wild, due to the large variation of appearance, such as different poses, expressions and occlusions. A good inpainting algorithm should guarantee the realism of output, including the topological structure among eyes, nose and mouth, as well as the attribute consistency on pose, gender, ethnicity, expression, etc. This paper studies an effective deep learning based strategy to deal with these issues, which comprises of a facial landmark predicting subnet and an image inpainting subnet. Concretely, given partial observation, the landmark predictor aims to provide the structural information (e.g. topological relationship and expression) of incomplete faces, while the inpaintor is to generate plausible appearance (e.g. gender and ethnicity) conditioned on the predicted landmarks. Experiments on the CelebA-HQ and CelebA datasets are conducted to reveal the efficacy of our design and, to demonstrate its superiority over state-of-the-art alternatives both qualitatively and quantitatively. In addition, we assume that high-quality completed faces together with their landmarks can be utilized as augmented data to further improve the performance of (any) landmark predictor, which is corroborated by experimental results on the 300W and WFLW datasets.

Proton Irradiation-Decelerated Intergranular Corrosion of Ni-Cr Alloys in Molten Salt

The effects of ionizing radiation on materials often reduce to "bad news." Radiation damage usually leads to detrimental effects such as embrittlement, accelerated creep, phase instability, and radiation-altered corrosion. This last point merits special attention. Elucidating synergies between radiation and corrosion has been one of the most challenging tasks impeding the deployment of advanced reactors, stemming from the combined effects of high temperature, corrosive coolants, and intense particle fluxes. Here we report that proton irradiation significantly and repeatably decelerates intergranular corrosion of Ni-Cr alloys in molten fluoride salt at 650C. We demonstrate this effect by showing that the depth of intergranular voids resulting from Cr leaching into the salt is reduced by the proton irradiation alone. Interstitial defects generated from proton irradiation result in radiation-enhanced diffusion, more rapidly replenishing corrosion-injected vacancies with alloy constituents, thus playing the crucial role in decelerating corrosion. Our results show that in industrially-relevant scenarios irradiation can have a positive impact, challenging our view that radiation damage always results in negative effects.

Learning from the Past: Continual Meta-Learning via Bayesian Graph Modeling

Meta-learning for few-shot learning allows a machine to leverage previously acquired knowledge as a prior, thus improving the performance on novel tasks with only small amounts of data. However, most mainstream models suffer from catastrophic forgetting and insufficient robustness issues, thereby failing to fully retain or exploit long-term knowledge while being prone to cause severe error accumulation. In this paper, we propose a novel Continual Meta-Learning approach with Bayesian Graph Neural Networks (CML-BGNN) that mathematically formulates meta-learning as continual learning of a sequence of tasks. With each task forming as a graph, the intra- and inter-task correlations can be well preserved via message-passing and history transition. To remedy topological uncertainty from graph initialization, we utilize Bayes by Backprop strategy that approximates the posterior distribution of task-specific parameters with amortized inference networks, which are seamlessly integrated into the end-to-end edge learning. Extensive experiments conducted on the miniImageNet and tieredImageNet datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method, improving the performance by 42.8% compared with state-of-the-art on the miniImageNet 5-way 1-shot classification task.

RGB-Infrared Cross-Modality Person Re-Identification via Joint Pixel and Feature Alignment

RGB-Infrared (IR) person re-identification is an important and challenging task due to large cross-modality variations between RGB and IR images. Most conventional approaches aim to bridge the cross-modality gap with feature alignment by feature representation learning. Different from existing methods, in this paper, we propose a novel and end-to-end Alignment Generative Adversarial Network (AlignGAN) for the RGB-IR RE-ID task. The proposed model enjoys several merits. First, it can exploit pixel alignment and feature alignment jointly. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to model the two alignment strategies jointly for the RGB-IR RE-ID problem. Second, the proposed model consists of a pixel generator, a feature generator, and a joint discriminator. By playing a min-max game among the three components, our model is able to not only alleviate the cross-modality and intra-modality variations but also learn identity-consistent features. Extensive experimental results on two standard benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed model performs favorably against state-of-the-art methods. Especially, on SYSU-MM01 dataset, our model can achieve an absolute gain of 15.4% and 12.9% in terms of Rank-1 and mAP.

Missing Movie Synergistic Completion across Multiple Isomeric Online Movie Knowledge Libraries

Online knowledge libraries refer to the online data warehouses that systematically organize and categorize the knowledge-based information about different kinds of concepts and entities. In the era of big data, the setup of online knowledge libraries is an extremely challenging and laborious task, in terms of efforts, time and expense required in the completion of knowledge entities. Especially nowadays, a large number of new knowledge entities, like movies, are keeping on being produced and coming out at a continuously accelerating speed, which renders the knowledge library setup and completion problem more difficult to resolve manually. In this paper, we will take the online movie knowledge libraries as an example, and study the "Multiple aligned ISomeric Online Knowledge LIbraries Completion problem" (Miso-Klic) problem across multiple online knowledge libraries. Miso-Klic aims at identifying the missing entities for multiple knowledge libraries synergistically and ranking them for editing based on certain ranking criteria. To solve the problem, a thorough investigation of two isomeric online knowledge libraries, Douban and IMDB, have been carried out in this paper. Based on analyses results, a novel deep online knowledge library completion framework "Integrated Deep alignEd Auto-encoder" (IDEA) is introduced to solve the problem. By projecting the entities from multiple isomeric knowledge libraries to a shared feature space, IDEA solves the Miso-Klic problem via three steps: (1) entity feature space unification via embedding, (2) knowledge library fusion based missing entity identification, and (3) missing entity ranking. Extensive experiments done on the real-world online knowledge library dataset have demonstrated the effectiveness of IDEA in addressing the problem.
