Stability analysis of the Eulerian-Lagrangian finite volume methods for nonlinear hyperbolic equations in one space dimension

In this paper, we construct a novel Eulerian-Lagrangian finite volume (ELFV) method for nonlinear scalar hyperbolic equations in one space dimension. It is well known that the exact solutions to such problems may contain shocks though the initial conditions are smooth, and direct numerical methods may suffer from restricted time step sizes. To relieve the restriction, we propose an ELFV method, where the space-time domain was separated by the partition lines originated from the cell interfaces whose slopes are obtained following the Rakine-Hugoniot junmp condition. Unfortunately, to avoid the intersection of the partition lines, the time step sizes are still limited. To fix this gap, we detect effective troubled cells (ETCs) and carefully design the influence region of each ETC, within which the partitioned space-time regions are merged together to form a new one. Then with the new partition of the space-time domain, we theoretically prove that the proposed first-order scheme with Euler forward time discretization is total-variation-diminishing and maximum-principle-preserving with {at least twice} larger time step constraints than the classical first order Eulerian method for Burgers' equation. Numerical experiments verify the optimality of the designed time step sizes.

DropMessage: Unifying Random Dropping for Graph Neural Networks

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) are powerful tools for graph representation learning. Despite their rapid development, GNNs also face some challenges, such as over-fitting, over-smoothing, and non-robustness. Previous works indicate that these problems can be alleviated by random dropping methods, which integrate augmented data into models by randomly masking parts of the input. However, some open problems of random dropping on GNNs remain to be solved. First, it is challenging to find a universal method that are suitable for all cases considering the divergence of different datasets and models. Second, augmented data introduced to GNNs causes the incomplete coverage of parameters and unstable training process. Third, there is no theoretical analysis on the effectiveness of random dropping methods on GNNs. In this paper, we propose a novel random dropping method called DropMessage, which performs dropping operations directly on the propagated messages during the message-passing process. More importantly, we find that DropMessage provides a unified framework for most existing random dropping methods, based on which we give theoretical analysis of their effectiveness. Furthermore, we elaborate the superiority of DropMessage: it stabilizes the training process by reducing sample variance; it keeps information diversity from the perspective of information theory, enabling it become a theoretical upper bound of other methods. To evaluate our proposed method, we conduct experiments that aims for multiple tasks on five public datasets and two industrial datasets with various backbone models. The experimental results show that DropMessage has the advantages of both effectiveness and generalization, and can significantly alleviate the problems mentioned above.

Deep Joint Source-Channel Coding for Wireless Image Transmission with Semantic Importance

The sixth-generation mobile communication system proposes the vision of smart interconnection of everything, which requires accomplishing communication tasks while ensuring the performance of intelligent tasks. A joint source-channel coding method based on semantic importance is proposed, which aims at preserving semantic information during wireless image transmission and thereby boosting the performance of intelligent tasks for images at the receiver. Specifically, we first propose semantic importance weight calculation method, which is based on the gradient of intelligent task's perception results with respect to the features. Then, we design the semantic loss function in the way of using semantic weights to weight the features. Finally, we train the deep joint source-channel coding network using the semantic loss function. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves up to 57.7% and 9.1% improvement in terms of intelligent task's performance compared with the source-channel separation coding method and the deep sourcechannel joint coding method without considering semantics at the same compression rate and signal-to-noise ratio, respectively.

Rain Removal from Light Field Images with 4D Convolution and Multi-scale Gaussian Process

Existing deraining methods focus mainly on a single input image. However, with just a single input image, it is extremely difficult to accurately detect and remove rain streaks, in order to restore a rain-free image. In contrast, a light field image (LFI) embeds abundant 3D structure and texture information of the target scene by recording the direction and position of each incident ray via a plenoptic camera. LFIs are becoming popular in the computer vision and graphics communities. However, making full use of the abundant information available from LFIs, such as 2D array of sub-views and the disparity map of each sub-view, for effective rain removal is still a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a novel method, 4D-MGP-SRRNet, for rain streak removal from LFIs. Our method takes as input all sub-views of a rainy LFI. To make full use of the LFI, it adopts 4D convolutional layers to simultaneously process all sub-views of the LFI. In the pipeline, the rain detection network, MGPDNet, with a novel Multi-scale Self-guided Gaussian Process (MSGP) module is proposed to detect high-resolution rain streaks from all sub-views of the input LFI at multi-scales. Semi-supervised learning is introduced for MSGP to accurately detect rain streaks by training on both virtual-world rainy LFIs and real-world rainy LFIs at multi-scales via computing pseudo ground truths for real-world rain streaks. We then feed all sub-views subtracting the predicted rain streaks into a 4D convolution-based Depth Estimation Residual Network (DERNet) to estimate the depth maps, which are later converted into fog maps. Finally, all sub-views concatenated with the corresponding rain streaks and fog maps are fed into a powerful rainy LFI restoring model based on the adversarial recurrent neural network to progressively eliminate rain streaks and recover the rain-free LFI.

Extended Successive Convex Approximation for Phase Retrieval with Dictionary Learning

Phase retrieval aims at reconstructing unknown signals from magnitude measurements of linear mixtures. In this paper, we consider the phase retrieval with dictionary learning problem, which includes an additional prior information that the measured signal admits a sparse representation over an unknown dictionary. The task is to jointly estimate the dictionary and the sparse representation from magnitude-only measurements. To this end, we study two complementary formulations and develop efficient parallel algorithms by extending the successive convex approximation framework using a smooth majorization. The first algorithm is termed compact-SCAphase and is preferable in the case of less diverse mixture models. It employs a compact formulation that avoids the use of auxiliary variables. The proposed algorithm is highly scalable and has reduced parameter tuning cost. The second algorithm, referred to as SCAphase, uses auxiliary variables and is favorable in the case of highly diverse mixture models. It also renders simple incorporation of additional side constraints. The performance of both methods is evaluated when applied to blind sparse channel estimation from subband magnitude measurements in a multi-antenna random access network. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed techniques compared to state-of-the-art methods.

TI-CNN: Convolutional Neural Networks for Fake News Detection

With the development of social networks, fake news for various commercial and political purposes has been appearing in large numbers and gotten widespread in the online world. With deceptive words, people can get infected by the fake news very easily and will share them without any fact-checking. For instance, during the 2016 US president election, various kinds of fake news about the candidates widely spread through both official news media and the online social networks. These fake news is usually released to either smear the opponents or support the candidate on their side. The erroneous information in the fake news is usually written to motivate the voters' irrational emotion and enthusiasm. Such kinds of fake news sometimes can bring about devastating effects, and an important goal in improving the credibility of online social networks is to identify the fake news timely. In this paper, we propose to study the fake news detection problem. Automatic fake news identification is extremely hard, since pure model based fact-checking for news is still an open problem, and few existing models can be applied to solve the problem. With a thorough investigation of a fake news data, lots of useful explicit features are identified from both the text words and images used in the fake news. Besides the explicit features, there also exist some hidden patterns in the words and images used in fake news, which can be captured with a set of latent features extracted via the multiple convolutional layers in our model. A model named as TI-CNN (Text and Image information based Convolutinal Neural Network) is proposed in this paper. By projecting the explicit and latent features into a unified feature space, TI-CNN is trained with both the text and image information simultaneously. Extensive experiments carried on the real-world fake news datasets have demonstrate the effectiveness of TI-CNN.

VQNet 2.0: A New Generation Machine Learning Framework that Unifies Classical and Quantum

With the rapid development of classical and quantum machine learning, a large number of machine learning frameworks have been proposed. However, existing machine learning frameworks usually only focus on classical or quantum, rather than both. Therefore, based on VQNet 1.0, we further propose VQNet 2.0, a new generation of unified classical and quantum machine learning framework that supports hybrid optimization. The core library of the framework is implemented in C++, and the user level is implemented in Python, and it supports deployment on quantum and classical hardware. In this article, we analyze the development trend of the new generation machine learning framework and introduce the design principles of VQNet 2.0 in detail: unity, practicality, efficiency, and compatibility, as well as full particulars of implementation. We illustrate the functions of VQNet 2.0 through several basic applications, including classical convolutional neural networks, quantum autoencoders, hybrid classical-quantum networks, etc. After that, through extensive experiments, we demonstrate that the operation speed of VQNet 2.0 is higher than the comparison method. Finally, through extensive experiments, we demonstrate that VQNet 2.0 can deploy on different hardware platforms, the overall calculation speed is faster than the comparison method. It also can be mixed and optimized with quantum circuits composed of multiple quantum computing libraries.

Incorporating Nuclear Quantum Effects in Molecular Dynamics with a Constrained Minimized Energy Surface

The accurate incorporation of nuclear quantum effects in large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations remains a significant challenge. Recently, we combined constrained nuclear-electronic orbital (CNEO) theory with classical MD and obtained a new approach (CNEO-MD) that can accurately and efficiently incorporate nuclear quantum effects into classical simulations. In this Letter, we provide the theoretical foundation for CNEO-MD by developing an alternative formulation of the equations of motion for MD. In this new formulation, the expectation values of quantum nuclear positions evolve classically on an effective energy surface that is obtained from a constrained energy minimization procedure when solving for the quantum nuclear wave function, thus enabling the incorporation of nuclear quantum effects in classical MD simulations. For comparison with other existing approaches, we examined a series of model systems and found that this new MD approach is significantly more accurate than the conventional way of performing classical MD, and it also generally outperforms centroid MD and ring-polymer MD in describing vibrations in these model systems.

Secure Semantic Communications: Fundamentals and Challenges

Semantic communication allows the receiver to know the intention instead of the bit information itself, which is an emerging technique to support real-time human-machine and machine-to-machine interactions for future wireless communications. In semantic communications, both transmitter and receiver share some common knowledge, which can be used to extract small-size information at the transmitter and recover the original information at the receiver. Due to different design purposes, security issues in semantic communications have two unique features compared to standard bit-wise communications. First, an attacker in semantic communications considers not only the amount of stolen data but also the meanings of stolen data. Second, an attacker in semantic communication systems can attack not only semantic information transmission as done in standard communication systems but also attacks machine learning (ML) models used for semantic information extraction since most of semantic information is generated using ML based methods. Due to these unique features, in this paper, we present an overview on the fundamentals and key challenges in the design of secure semantic communication. We first provide various methods to define and extract semantic information. Then, we focus on secure semantic communication techniques in two areas: information security and semantic ML model security. For each area, we identify the main problems and challenges. Then, we will provide a comprehensive treatment of these problems. In a nutshell, this article provides a holistic set of guidelines on how to design secure semantic communication systems over real-world wireless communication networks.

Semantic Enhanced Knowledge Graph for Large-Scale Zero-Shot Learning

Zero-Shot Learning has been a highlighted research topic in both vision and language areas. Recently, most existing methods adopt structured knowledge information to model explicit correlations among categories and use deep graph convolutional network to propagate information between different categories. However, it is difficult to add new categories to existing structured knowledge graph, and deep graph convolutional network suffers from over-smoothing problem. In this paper, we provide a new semantic enhanced knowledge graph that contains both expert knowledge and categories semantic correlation. Our semantic enhanced knowledge graph can further enhance the correlations among categories and make it easy to absorb new categories. To propagate information on the knowledge graph, we propose a novel Residual Graph Convolutional Network (ResGCN), which can effectively alleviate the problem of over-smoothing. Experiments conducted on the widely used large-scale ImageNet-21K dataset and AWA2 dataset show the effectiveness of our method, and establish a new state-of-the-art on zero-shot learning. Moreover, our results on the large-scale ImageNet-21K with various feature extraction networks show that our method has better generalization and robustness.

Ultra-Low-Frequency Radio Astronomy Observations from a Selenocentric Orbit: first results of the Longjiang-2 experiment

This paper introduces the first results of observations with the Ultra-Long-Wavelength (ULW) -- Low Frequency Interferometer and Spectrometer (LFIS) on board the selenocentric satellite Longjiang-2. We present a brief description of the satellite and focus on the LFIS payload. The in-orbit commissioning confirmed a reliable operational status of the instrumentation. We also present results of a transition observation, which offers unique measurements on several novel aspects. We estimate the RFI suppression required for such a radio astronomy instrumentation at the Moon distances from Earth to be of the order of 80 dB. We analyse a method of separating Earth- and satellite-originated radio frequency interference (RFI). It is found that the RFI level at frequencies lower than a few MHz is smaller than the receiver noise floor.

Wide-scale Monitoring of Satellite Lifetimes: Pitfalls and a Benchmark Dataset

An important task within the broader goal of Space Situational Awareness (SSA) is to observe changes in the orbits of satellites, where the data spans thousands of objects over long time scales (decades). The Two-Line Element (TLE) data provided by the North American Aerospace Defense Command is the most comprehensive and widely-available dataset cataloguing the orbits of satellites. This makes it a highly-attractive data source on which to perform this observation. However, when attempting to infer changes in satellite behaviour from TLE data, there are a number of potential pitfalls. These mostly relate to specific features of the TLE data which are not always clearly documented in the data sources or popular software packages for manipulating them. These quirks produce a particularly hazardous data type for researchers from adjacent disciplines (such as anomaly detection or machine learning). We highlight these features of TLE data and the resulting pitfalls in order to save future researchers from being trapped. A seperate, significant, issue is that existing contributions to manoeuvre detection from TLE data evaluate their algorithms on different satellites, making comparison between these methods difficult. Moreover, the ground-truth in these datasets is often poor quality, sometimes being based on subjective human assessment. We therefore release and describe in-depth an open, curated, benchmark dataset containing TLE data for 15 satellites alongside high-quality ground-truth manoeuvre timestamps.

Holistic risk assessment of inference attacks in machine learning

As machine learning expanding application, there are more and more unignorable privacy and safety issues. Especially inference attacks against Machine Learning models allow adversaries to infer sensitive information about the target model, such as training data, model parameters, etc. Inference attacks can lead to serious consequences, including violating individuals privacy, compromising the intellectual property of the owner of the machine learning model. As far as concerned, researchers have studied and analyzed in depth several types of inference attacks, albeit in isolation, but there is still a lack of a holistic rick assessment of inference attacks against machine learning models, such as their application in different scenarios, the common factors affecting the performance of these attacks and the relationship among the attacks. As a result, this paper performs a holistic risk assessment of different inference attacks against Machine Learning models. This paper focuses on three kinds of representative attacks: membership inference attack, attribute inference attack and model stealing attack. And a threat model taxonomy is established. A total of 12 target models using three model architectures, including AlexNet, ResNet18 and Simple CNN, are trained on four datasets, namely CelebA, UTKFace, STL10 and FMNIST.

Acoustic-Driven Magnetic Skyrmion Motion

Magnetic skyrmions have great potential for developing novel spintronic devices. The electrical manipulation of skyrmions has mainly relied on current-induced spin-orbit torques. A recent theoretical model suggested that the skyrmions could be more efficiently manipulated by surface acoustic waves (SAW), an elastic wave that can couple with magnetic moment through magnetoelastic effect. However, the directional motion of skyrmions that is driven by SAW is still missing. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the motion of Néel-type skyrmions in Ta/CoFeB/MgO/Ta multilayers driven by propagating SAW pulses from on-chip piezoelectric transducers. Our results reveal that the elastic wave with longitudinal and shear vertical displacements (Rayleigh wave) traps skyrmions, while the shear horizontal wave effectively drives the motion of skyrmions. In particular, a longitudinal motion along the SAW propagation direction and a transverse motion due to topological charge, are observed and further confirmed by our micromagnetic simulations. This work demonstrates a promising approach based on acoustic waves for manipulating skyrmions, which could offer new opportunities for ultra-low power spintronics.

FakeEdge: Alleviate Dataset Shift in Link Prediction

Link prediction is a crucial problem in graph-structured data. Due to the recent success of graph neural networks (GNNs), a variety of GNN-based models were proposed to tackle the link prediction task. Specifically, GNNs leverage the message passing paradigm to obtain node representation, which relies on link connectivity. However, in a link prediction task, links in the training set are always present while ones in the testing set are not yet formed, resulting in a discrepancy of the connectivity pattern and bias of the learned representation. It leads to a problem of dataset shift which degrades the model performance. In this paper, we first identify the dataset shift problem in the link prediction task and provide theoretical analyses on how existing link prediction methods are vulnerable to it. We then propose FakeEdge, a model-agnostic technique, to address the problem by mitigating the graph topological gap between training and testing sets. Extensive experiments demonstrate the applicability and superiority of FakeEdge on multiple datasets across various domains.

Task-Oriented Image Semantic Communication Based on Rate-Distortion Theory

Task-oriented image semantic communication is a new communication paradigm, which aims to transmit semantics for artificial intelligent (AI) tasks while ignoring the reconstruction quality of the images. However, in some applications, such as autonomous driving, both image reconstruction quality and the performance of the followed AI tasks must be simultaneously considered. To tackle this challenge, this paper proposes a task-oriented semantic communication scheme with semantic reconstruction (TOSC-SR). Its main goal is to simultaneously minimize pixel-level and task-relevant semantic-level distortion during communications under a certain rate, which formulates a new rate-distortion optimization problem. To successfully measure the loss at the semantic level, a new form of semantic distortion measured by the mutual information between the semantic-reconstructed images and the task labels is proposed. Then, we derive an analytical solution for the formulated problem, where the self-consistent equations of the problem are obtained to determine the optimal mapping of the source and the semantic-reconstructed images. To implement TOSC-SR, we further obtain an extended form of rate-distortion form based on the variational approximation of mutual information, which is applicable to multiple AI tasks. Experimental results show that the proposed approach outperforms the traditional JPEG, JPEG2000, BPG, VVC-based image communication systems and deep learning based benchmarks in terms of image reconstruction quality, AI task performance, and multi-task generalization ability.

A Chemical Study of Nine Star-forming Regions with Evidence of Infall Motion

The study of the physical and chemical properties of gas infall motion in the molecular clumps helps us understand the initial stages of star formation. We used the FTS wide-sideband mode of the IRAM 30-m telescope to observe nine infall sources with significant double peaked blue line profile. The observation frequency range are 83.7 - 91.5 GHz and 99.4 - 107.2 GHz. We have obtained numbers of molecular line data. Using XCLASS, a total of 7 to 27 different molecules and isotopic transition lines have been identified in these nine sources, including carbon chain molecules such as CCH, c-C3H2 and HC3N. According to the radiation transfer model, we estimated the rotation temperatures and column densities of these sources. Chemical simulations adopting a physical model of HMSFRs are used to fit the observed molecular abundances. The comparison shows that most sources are in the early HMPO stage, with the inner temperature around several ten K.
