Robust 3.7 V-Na$_{2/3}$[Cu$_{1/3}$Mn$_{2/3}$]O$_2$ Cathode for Na-ion Batteries

Na-ion batteries (NIBs), which are recognized as a next-generation alternative technology for energy storage, still suffer from commercialization constraints due to the lack of low-cost, high-performance cathode materials. Since our first discovery of Cu$^{3+}$/Cu$^{2+}$ electrochemistry in 2014, numerous Cu-substituted/doped materials have been designed for NIBs. However for almost ten years, the potential of Cu$^{3+}$/Cu$^{2+}$ electrochemistry has been grossly underappreciated and normally regarded as a semielectrochemically active redox. Here, we re-synthesized P2-Na$_{2/3}$[Cu$_{1/3}$Mn$_{2/3}$]O$_2$ and reinterpreted it as a high-voltage, cost-efficient, air-stable, long-life, and high-rate cathode material for NIBs, which demonstrates a high operating voltage of 3.7 V and a completely active Cu$^{3+}$/Cu$^{2+}$ redox reaction. The 2.3 Ah cylindrical cells exhibit excellent cycling (93.1% capacity after 2000 cycles), high rate (97.2% capacity at 10C rate), good low-temperature performance (86.6% capacity at -30$^\circ$C), and high safety, based on which, a 56 V-11.5 Ah battery pack for E-bikes is successfully constructed, exhibiting stable cycling (96.5% capacity at the 800th cycle) and a long driving distance (36 km, tester weight 65 kg). This work offers a commercially feasible cathode material for low-cost, high-voltage NIBs, paving the way for advanced NIBs in power and stationary energy storage applications.

Learning a Deep Color Difference Metric for Photographic Images

Most well-established and widely used color difference (CD) metrics are handcrafted and subject-calibrated against uniformly colored patches, which do not generalize well to photographic images characterized by natural scene complexities. Constructing CD formulae for photographic images is still an active research topic in imaging/illumination, vision science, and color science communities. In this paper, we aim to learn a deep CD metric for photographic images with four desirable properties. First, it well aligns with the observations in vision science that color and form are linked inextricably in visual cortical processing. Second, it is a proper metric in the mathematical sense. Third, it computes accurate CDs between photographic images, differing mainly in color appearances. Fourth, it is robust to mild geometric distortions (e.g., translation or due to parallax), which are often present in photographic images of the same scene captured by different digital cameras. We show that all these properties can be satisfied at once by learning a multi-scale autoregressive normalizing flow for feature transform, followed by the Euclidean distance which is linearly proportional to the human perceptual CD. Quantitative and qualitative experiments on the large-scale SPCD dataset demonstrate the promise of the learned CD metric.

ScanERU: Interactive 3D Visual Grounding based on Embodied Reference Understanding

Aiming to link natural language descriptions to specific regions in a 3D scene represented as 3D point clouds, 3D visual grounding is a very fundamental task for human-robot interaction. The recognition errors can significantly impact the overall accuracy and then degrade the operation of AI systems. Despite their effectiveness, existing methods suffer from the difficulty of low recognition accuracy in cases of multiple adjacent objects with similar appearances. To address this issue, this work intuitively introduces the human-robot interaction as a cue to facilitate the development of 3D visual grounding. Specifically, a new task termed Embodied Reference Understanding (ERU) is first designed for this concern. Then a new dataset called ScanERU is constructed to evaluate the effectiveness of this idea. Different from existing datasets, our ScanERU is the first to cover semi-synthetic scene integration with textual, real-world visual, and synthetic gestural information. Additionally, this paper formulates a heuristic framework based on attention mechanisms and human body movements to enlighten the research of ERU. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method, especially in the recognition of multiple identical objects. Our codes and dataset are ready to be available publicly.

A Complete Survey on Generative AI (AIGC): Is ChatGPT from GPT-4 to GPT-5 All You Need?

As ChatGPT goes viral, generative AI (AIGC, a.k.a AI-generated content) has made headlines everywhere because of its ability to analyze and create text, images, and beyond. With such overwhelming media coverage, it is almost impossible for us to miss the opportunity to glimpse AIGC from a certain angle. In the era of AI transitioning from pure analysis to creation, it is worth noting that ChatGPT, with its most recent language model GPT-4, is just a tool out of numerous AIGC tasks. Impressed by the capability of the ChatGPT, many people are wondering about its limits: can GPT-5 (or other future GPT variants) help ChatGPT unify all AIGC tasks for diversified content creation? Toward answering this question, a comprehensive review of existing AIGC tasks is needed. As such, our work comes to fill this gap promptly by offering a first look at AIGC, ranging from its techniques to applications. Modern generative AI relies on various technical foundations, ranging from model architecture and self-supervised pretraining to generative modeling methods (like GAN and diffusion models). After introducing the fundamental techniques, this work focuses on the technological development of various AIGC tasks based on their output type, including text, images, videos, 3D content, etc., which depicts the full potential of ChatGPT's future. Moreover, we summarize their significant applications in some mainstream industries, such as education and creativity content. Finally, we discuss the challenges currently faced and present an outlook on how generative AI might evolve in the near future.

Learning Behavior Recognition in Smart Classroom with Multiple Students Based on YOLOv5

Deep learning-based computer vision technology has grown stronger in recent years, and cross-fertilization using computer vision technology has been a popular direction in recent years. The use of computer vision technology to identify students' learning behavior in the classroom can reduce the workload of traditional teachers in supervising students in the classroom, and ensure greater accuracy and comprehensiveness. However, existing student learning behavior detection systems are unable to track and detect multiple targets precisely, and the accuracy of learning behavior recognition is not high enough to meet the existing needs for the accurate recognition of student behavior in the classroom. To solve this problem, we propose a YOLOv5s network structure based on you only look once (YOLO) algorithm to recognize and analyze students' classroom behavior in this paper. Firstly, the input images taken in the smart classroom are pre-processed. Then, the pre-processed image is fed into the designed YOLOv5 networks to extract deep features through convolutional layers, and the Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) attention detection mechanism is applied to reduce the weight of background information in the recognition process. Finally, the extracted features are classified by the Feature Pyramid Networks (FPN) and Path Aggregation Network (PAN) structures. Multiple groups of experiments were performed to compare with traditional learning behavior recognition methods to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. When compared with YOLOv4, the proposed method is able to improve the mAP performance by 11%.

In search for infalling clumps in molecular clouds -- A catalogue of CO blue-profiles

We have started a systematic survey of molecular clumps with infall motions to study the very early phase of star formation. Our first step is to utilize the data products by MWISP to make an unbiased survey for blue asymmetric line profiles of CO isotopical molecules. Within a total area of $\sim$ 2400 square degrees nearby the Galactic plane, we have found 3533 candidates showing blue-profiles, in which 3329 are selected from the $^{12}$CO&$^{13}$CO pair and 204 are from the $^{13}$CO&C$^{18}$O pair. Exploration of the parametric spaces suggests our samples are in the cold phase with relatively high column densities ready for star formation. Analysis of the spatial distribution of our samples suggests that they exist virtually in all major components of the Galaxy. The vertical distribution suggest that the sources are located mainly in the thick disk of $\sim$ 85 parsec, but still a small part are located far beyond Galactic midplane. Our follow-up observation indicates that these candidates are a good sample to start a search for infall motions, and to study the condition of very early phase of star formation.

Rt-Track: Robust Tricks for Multi-Pedestrian Tracking

Object tracking is divided into single-object tracking (SOT) and multi-object tracking (MOT). MOT aims to maintain the identities of multiple objects across a series of continuous video sequences. In recent years, MOT has made rapid progress. However, modeling the motion and appearance models of objects in complex scenes still faces various challenging issues. In this paper, we design a novel direction consistency method for smooth trajectory prediction (STP-DC) to increase the modeling of motion information and overcome the lack of robustness in previous methods in complex scenes. Existing methods use pedestrian re-identification (Re-ID) to model appearance, however, they extract more background information which lacks discriminability in occlusion and crowded scenes. We propose a hyper-grain feature embedding network (HG-FEN) to enhance the modeling of appearance models, thus generating robust appearance descriptors. We also proposed other robustness techniques, including CF-ECM for storing robust appearance information and SK-AS for improving association accuracy. To achieve state-of-the-art performance in MOT, we propose a robust tracker named Rt-track, incorporating various tricks and techniques. It achieves 79.5 MOTA, 76.0 IDF1 and 62.1 HOTA on the test set of MOT17.Rt-track also achieves 77.9 MOTA, 78.4 IDF1 and 63.3 HOTA on MOT20, surpassing all published methods.

Guided Speech Enhancement Network

High quality speech capture has been widely studied for both voice communication and human computer interface reasons. To improve the capture performance, we can often find multi-microphone speech enhancement techniques deployed on various devices. Multi-microphone speech enhancement problem is often decomposed into two decoupled steps: a beamformer that provides spatial filtering and a single-channel speech enhancement model that cleans up the beamformer output. In this work, we propose a speech enhancement solution that takes both the raw microphone and beamformer outputs as the input for an ML model. We devise a simple yet effective training scheme that allows the model to learn from the cues of the beamformer by contrasting the two inputs and greatly boost its capability in spatial rejection, while conducting the general tasks of denoising and dereverberation. The proposed solution takes advantage of classical spatial filtering algorithms instead of competing with them. By design, the beamformer module then could be selected separately and does not require a large amount of data to be optimized for a given form factor, and the network model can be considered as a standalone module which is highly transferable independently from the microphone array. We name the ML module in our solution as GSENet, short for Guided Speech Enhancement Network. We demonstrate its effectiveness on real world data collected on multi-microphone devices in terms of the suppression of noise and interfering speech.

WiserVR: Semantic Communication Enabled Wireless Virtual Reality Delivery

Virtual reality (VR) over wireless is expected to be one of the killer applications in next-generation communication networks. Nevertheless, the huge data volume along with stringent requirements on latency and reliability under limited bandwidth resources makes untethered wireless VR delivery increasingly challenging. Such bottlenecks, therefore, motivate this work to seek the potential of using semantic communication, a new paradigm that promises to significantly ease the resource pressure, for efficient VR delivery. To this end, we propose a novel framework, namely WIreless SEmantic deliveRy for VR (WiserVR), for delivering consecutive 360° video frames to VR users. Specifically, deep learning-based multiple modules are well-devised for the transceiver in WiserVR to realize high-performance feature extraction and semantic recovery. Among them, we dedicatedly develop a concept of semantic location graph and leverage the joint-semantic-channel-coding method with knowledge sharing to not only substantially reduce communication latency, but also to guarantee adequate transmission reliability and resilience under various channel states. Moreover, implementation of WiserVR is presented, followed by corresponding initial simulations for performance evaluation compared with benchmarks. Finally, we discuss several open issues and offer feasible solutions to unlock the full potential of WiserVR.

Graph Neural Networks Enhanced Smart Contract Vulnerability Detection of Educational Blockchain

With the development of blockchain technology, more and more attention has been paid to the intersection of blockchain and education, and various educational evaluation systems and E-learning systems are developed based on blockchain technology. Among them, Ethereum smart contract is favored by developers for its ``event-triggered" mechanism for building education intelligent trading systems and intelligent learning platforms. However, due to the immutability of blockchain, published smart contracts cannot be modified, so problematic contracts cannot be fixed by modifying the code in the educational blockchain. In recent years, security incidents due to smart contract vulnerabilities have caused huge property losses, so the detection of smart contract vulnerabilities in educational blockchain has become a great challenge. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a graph neural network (GNN) based vulnerability detection for smart contracts in educational blockchains. Firstly, the bytecodes are decompiled to get the opcode. Secondly, the basic blocks are divided, and the edges between the basic blocks according to the opcode execution logic are added. Then, the control flow graphs (CFG) are built. Finally, we designed a GNN-based model for vulnerability detection. The experimental results show that the proposed method is effective for the vulnerability detection of smart contracts. Compared with the traditional approaches, it can get good results with fewer layers of the GCN model, which shows that the contract bytecode and GCN model are efficient in vulnerability detection.

Transposed Poisson structures on Schrodinger algebra in (n+1)-dimensional space-time

Transposed Poisson structures on the Schrödinger algebra in $(n+1)$-dimensional space-time of Schrödinger Lie groups are described. It was proven that the Schrödinger algebra $\mathcal{S}_{n}$ in case of $n\neq 2$ does not have non-trivial $\frac{1}{2}$-derivations and as it follows it does not admit non-trivial transposed Poisson structures. All $\frac{1}{2}$-derivations and transposed Poisson structures for the algebra $\mathcal{S}_{2}$ are obtained. Also, we proved that the Schrödinger algebra $\mathcal{S}_{2}$ admits a non-trivial ${\rm Hom}$-Lie structure.

Self-similarity Driven Scale-invariant Learning for Weakly Supervised Person Search

Weakly supervised person search aims to jointly detect and match persons with only bounding box annotations. Existing approaches typically focus on improving the features by exploring relations of persons. However, scale variation problem is a more severe obstacle and under-studied that a person often owns images with different scales (resolutions). On the one hand, small-scale images contain less information of a person, thus affecting the accuracy of the generated pseudo labels. On the other hand, the similarity of cross-scale images is often smaller than that of images with the same scale for a person, which will increase the difficulty of matching. In this paper, we address this problem by proposing a novel one-step framework, named Self-similarity driven Scale-invariant Learning (SSL). Scale invariance can be explored based on the self-similarity prior that it shows the same statistical properties of an image at different scales. To this end, we introduce a Multi-scale Exemplar Branch to guide the network in concentrating on the foreground and learning scale-invariant features by hard exemplars mining. To enhance the discriminative power of the features in an unsupervised manner, we introduce a dynamic multi-label prediction which progressively seeks true labels for training. It is adaptable to different types of unlabeled data and serves as a compensation for clustering based strategy. Experiments on PRW and CUHK-SYSU databases demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

ACNet: Approaching-and-Centralizing Network for Zero-Shot Sketch-Based Image Retrieval

The huge domain gap between sketches and photos and the highly abstract sketch representations pose challenges for sketch-based image retrieval (\underline{SBIR}). The zero-shot sketch-based image retrieval (\underline{ZS-SBIR}) is more generic and practical but poses an even greater challenge because of the additional knowledge gap between the seen and unseen categories. To simultaneously mitigate both gaps, we propose an \textbf{A}pproaching-and-\textbf{C}entralizing \textbf{Net}work (termed "\textbf{ACNet}") to jointly optimize sketch-to-photo synthesis and the image retrieval. The retrieval module guides the synthesis module to generate large amounts of diverse photo-like images which gradually approach the photo domain, and thus better serve the retrieval module than ever to learn domain-agnostic representations and category-agnostic common knowledge for generalizing to unseen categories. These diverse images generated with retrieval guidance can effectively alleviate the overfitting problem troubling concrete category-specific training samples with high gradients. We also discover the use of proxy-based NormSoftmax loss is effective in the zero-shot setting because its centralizing effect can stabilize our joint training and promote the generalization ability to unseen categories. Our approach is simple yet effective, which achieves state-of-the-art performance on two widely used ZS-SBIR datasets and surpasses previous methods by a large margin.

Bioinspired soft robotics: How do we learn from creatures?

Soft robotics has opened a unique path to flexibility and environmental adaptability, learning from nature and reproducing biological behaviors. Nature implies answers for how to apply robots to real life. To find out how we learn from creatures to design and apply soft robots, in this Review, we propose a classification method to summarize soft robots based on different functions of biological systems: self-growing, self-healing, self-responsive, and self-circulatory. The bio-function based classification logic is presented to explain why we learn from creatures. State-of-art technologies, characteristics, pros, cons, challenges, and potential applications of these categories are analyzed to illustrate what we learned from creatures. By intersecting these categories, the existing and potential bio-inspired applications are overviewed and outlooked to finally find the answer, that is, how we learn from creatures.

Bayesian Structure Scores for Probabilistic Circuits

Probabilistic circuits (PCs) are a prominent representation of probability distributions with tractable inference. While parameter learning in PCs is rigorously studied, structure learning is often more based on heuristics than on principled objectives. In this paper, we develop Bayesian structure scores for deterministic PCs, i.e., the structure likelihood with parameters marginalized out, which are well known as rigorous objectives for structure learning in probabilistic graphical models. When used within a greedy cutset algorithm, our scores effectively protect against overfitting and yield a fast and almost hyper-parameter-free structure learner, distinguishing it from previous approaches. In experiments, we achieve good trade-offs between training time and model fit in terms of log-likelihood. Moreover, the principled nature of Bayesian scores unlocks PCs for accommodating frameworks such as structural expectation-maximization.

Range-Separated Hybrid Functional Pseudopotentials

Consistency between the exchange-correlation (xc) functional used during pseudopotential construction and planewave-based electronic structure calculations is important for an accurate and reliable description of the structure and properties of condensed-phase systems. In this work, we present a general scheme for constructing pseudopotentials with range-separated hybrid (RSH) xc functionals based on the solution of the all-electron radial integro-differential equation for a spherical atomic configuration. As proof-of-principle, we demonstrate pseudopotential construction with the PBE, PBE0, HSE, and sRSH (based on LC-$ω$PBE0) xc functionals for a select set of atoms, and then investigate the importance of pseudopotential consistency when computing band gaps, equilibrium lattice parameters, bulk moduli, and atomization energies of several solid-state systems. In doing so, we find that pseudopotential consistency errors (PSCE) tend to be systematic and can be as large as $1.4\%$ when computing these properties.

Solar coronal magnetic field measurements using spectral lines available in Hinode/EIS observations: Strong and weak field techniques and temperature diagnostics

Recently, it has been proposed that the magnetic-field-induced transition (MIT) in Fe X can be used to measure coronal magnetic field strengths. Several techniques, the direct line ratio technique and the weak and strong magnetic field techniques, are developed to apply the MIT theory to spectroscopic observations taken by EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) onboard Hinode. However, the suitability of coronal magnetic field measurements based on the weak and strong magnetic field techniques has not been evaluated. Besides, temperature diagnostics is also important for measuring coronal magnetic field based on the MIT theory, but how to determine the accurate formation temperature of the Fe X lines from EIS observations still needs investigation. In this study, we synthesized emissions of several spectral lines from a 3D radiation magnetohydrodynamic model of a solar active region, and then derived magnetic field strengths using different methods. We first compared the magnetic field strengths derived from the weak and strong magnetic field techniques to the values in the model. Our study suggests that both weak and strong magnetic field techniques underestimate the coronal magnetic field strength. Then we developed two methods to calculate the formation temperature of the Fe X lines. One is based on differential emission measure analyses, and the other is deriving temperature from the Fe IX and Fe XI line pairs. However, neither of the two methods can provide temperature determination for accurate coronal magnetic field measurements as those derived from the Fe X 174/175 and 184/345 Å line ratios. More efforts are still needed for accurate coronal magnetic field measurements using EIS observations.

Cascaded information enhancement and cross-modal attention feature fusion for multispectral pedestrian detection

Multispectral pedestrian detection is a technology designed to detect and locate pedestrians in Color and Thermal images, which has been widely used in automatic driving, video surveillance, etc. So far most available multispectral pedestrian detection algorithms only achieved limited success in pedestrian detection because of the lacking take into account the confusion of pedestrian information and background noise in Color and Thermal images. Here we propose a multispectral pedestrian detection algorithm, which mainly consists of a cascaded information enhancement module and a cross-modal attention feature fusion module. On the one hand, the cascaded information enhancement module adopts the channel and spatial attention mechanism to perform attention weighting on the features fused by the cascaded feature fusion block. Moreover, it multiplies the single-modal features with the attention weight element by element to enhance the pedestrian features in the single-modal and thus suppress the interference from the background. On the other hand, the cross-modal attention feature fusion module mines the features of both Color and Thermal modalities to complement each other, then the global features are constructed by adding the cross-modal complemented features element by element, which are attentionally weighted to achieve the effective fusion of the two modal features. Finally, the fused features are input into the detection head to detect and locate pedestrians. Extensive experiments have been performed on two improved versions of annotations (sanitized annotations and paired annotations) of the public dataset KAIST. The experimental results show that our method demonstrates a lower pedestrian miss rate and more accurate pedestrian detection boxes compared to the comparison method. Additionally, the ablation experiment also proved the effectiveness of each module designed in this paper.
