First-Principles Study of Electronic and Vibrational Properties of BaHfN$_2$

The transition metal nitride BaHfN$_2$, which consists of weakly bonded neutral slabs of closed shell ions, has structural and chemical similarities to other layered nitrides which have impressive superconducting T$_c$ when electron doped: A$_x$HfNCl, A$_x$ZrNCl, A$_x$TiNCl, with $T_c= 25.5$, $15.2$ and $16.5$ K, respectively for appropriate donor (A) concentrations $x$. These similarities suggest the possibility of BaHfN$_2$ being another relatively high T$_c$ nitride upon doping, with effects of structure and the role of specific transition metal ions yet to be understood. We report first-principles electronic structure calculations for stoichiometric BaHfN$_2$ using density functional theory with plane-wave basis sets and separable dual-space Gaussian pseudopotentials. An indirect band gap of 0.8 eV was obtained and the lowest conduction band is primarily of Hf 5$d_{xy}$ character, similar to $β$-ZrNCl and $α$-TiNCl. The two N sites, one in the Hf layer and another one in the Ba layer, were found to have very anisotropic Born effective charges (BEC):deviations from the formal charge (-3) are opposite for the two sites, and opposite for the two orientations (in-plane, out of plane). LO-TO splittings and comparison of BECs and dielectric constant tensors to those of related compounds are discussed, and the effect of electron doping on the zone-center phonons is reported.

The ratio of θ-congruent numbers

Let 0<θ<πsuch that \cosθ\in \Q. In this paper, we prove that for given positive square-free coprime integers k,l, there exist infinitely many pairs (M,N) of θ-congruent numbers such that lN=kM. This generalize the previous result of Rajan and Ramaroson [A. Rajan and F. Ramaroson, Ratios of congruent numbers, Acta Arithemetica 128 (2007), no. 2, 101-106] on the ratio of congruent numbers from congruent numbers (i.e. θ=π/2) to arbitrary θ-congruent numbers.

Flare and CME Properties and Rates at Sunspot Minimum

The corona at solar minimum generally differs greatly from that during active times. We discuss the current Cycle 23/24 minimum from the point of view of the occurrence of flares and CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections). By comparison with the previous minimum, the flare/CME ratio diminished by almost an order of magnitude. This suggests that the environmental effect in flare/CME association differed in the sense that the Cycle 23/24 minimum corona was relatively easy to disrupt.

Manipulation of Spin Transport in Graphene by Surface Chemical Doping

The effects of surface chemical doping on spin transport in graphene are investigated by performing non-local measurements in ultrahigh vacuum while depositing gold adsorbates. We demonstrate manipulation of the gate-dependent non-local spin signal as a function of gold coverage. We discover that charged impurity scattering is not the dominant mechanism for spin relaxation in graphene, despite its importance for momentum scattering. Finally, unexpected enhancements of the spin lifetime illustrate the complex nature of spin relaxation in graphene.

Tailoring Interlayer Exchange Coupling of Ferromagnetic Films Across MgO with Fe Nanoclusters

We investigate the interlayer exchange coupling in Fe/MgO/Fe and Fe/MgO/Co systems with magnetic Fe nanoclusters embedded in the MgO spacer. Samples are grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and utilize wedged MgO films to independently vary the film thickness and the position of the Fe nanoclusters. Depending on the position of the Fe nanoclusters, the bilinear coupling (J1) exhibits strong variations in magnitude and can even switch between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic. This effect is explained by the magnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic films and the magnetic nanoclusters. Interestingly, the coupling of Fe nanoclusters to a Co film is 160% stronger than their coupling to a Fe film (at MgO spacing of 0.56 nm). This is much greater than the coupling difference of 20% observed in the analogous thin film systems (i.e. Fe/MgO/Co vs. Fe/MgO/Fe), identifying an interesting nano-scaling effect related to the coupling between films and nanoclusters.

$k$th power residue chains of global fields

In 1974, Vegh proved that if $k$ is a prime and $m$ a positive integer, there is an $m$ term permutation chain of $k$th power residue for infinitely many primes [E.Vegh, $k$th power residue chains, J.Number Theory, 9(1977), 179-181]. In fact, his proof showed that $1,2,2^2,...,2^{m-1}$ is an $m$ term permutation chain of $k$th power residue for infinitely many primes. In this paper, we prove that for any "possible" $m$ term sequence $r_1,r_2,...,r_m$, there are infinitely many primes $p$ making it an $m$ term permutation chain of $k$th power residue modulo $p$, where $k$ is an arbitrary positive integer [See Theorem 1.2]. From our result, we see that Vegh's theorem holds for any positive integer $k$, not only for prime numbers. In fact, we prove our result in more generality where the integer ring $\Z$ is replaced by any $S$-integer ring of global fields (i.e. algebraic number fields or algebraic function fields over finite fields).

The genus fields of Artin-Schreier extensions

Let $q$ be a power of a prime number $p$. Let $k=\mathbb{F}_{q}(t)$ be the rational function field with constant field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. Let $K=k(α)$ be an Artin-Schreier extension of $k$. In this paper, we explicitly describe the ambiguous ideal classes and the genus field of $K$ . Using these results we study the $p$-part of the ideal class group of the integral closure of $\mathbb{F}_{q}[t]$ in $K$. And we also give an analogy of R$\acute{e}$dei-Reichardt's formulae for $K$.

Electronic Doping and Scattering by Transition Metals on Graphene

We investigate the effects of transition metals (TM) on the electronic doping and scattering in graphene using molecular beam epitaxy combined with in situ transport measurements. The room temperature deposition of TM onto graphene produces clusters that dope n-type for all TM investigated (Ti, Fe, Pt). We also find that the scattering by TM clusters exhibits different behavior compared to 1/r Coulomb scattering. At high coverage, Pt films are able to produce doping that is either n-type or weakly p-type, which provides experimental evidence for a strong interfacial dipole favoring n-type doping as predicted theoretically.

Electrical Detection of Spin Precession in Single Layer Graphene Spin Valves with Transparent Contacts

Spin accumulation and spin precession in single-layer graphene are studied by non-local spin valve measurements at room temperature. The dependence of the non-local magnetoresistance on electrode spacing is investigated and the results indicate a spin diffusion length of ~1.6 microns and a spin injection/detection efficiency of 0.013. Electrical detection of the spin precession confirms that the non-local signal originates from spin injection and transport. Fitting of the Hanle spin precession data yields a spin relaxation time of ~84 ps and a spin diffusion length of ~1.5 microns, which is consistent with the value obtained through the spacing dependence.

Electron-Hole Asymmetry of Spin Injection and Transport in Single-Layer Graphene

Spin-dependent properties of single-layer graphene (SLG) have been studied by non-local spin valve measurements at room temperature. Gate voltage dependence shows that the non-local magnetoresistance (MR) is proportional to the conductivity of the SLG, which is the predicted behavior for transparent ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic contacts. While the electron and hole bands in SLG are symmetric, gate voltage and bias dependence of the non-local MR reveal an electron-hole asymmetry in which the non-local MR is roughly independent of bias for electrons, but varies significantly with bias for holes.

Simultaneous creations of discrete-variable entangle state and single-photon-added coherent state

The single-photon-added coherent state (SPACS), as an intermediate classical-to-purely-quantum state, was first realized recently by Zavatta \emph{$et al.$} (Science 306, 660 (2004)). We show here that the success probability of their SPACS generation can be enhanced by a simple method which leads to simultaneous creations of a discrete-variable entangled state and a SPACS or even a hybrid-variable entangled SPACS in two different channels. The impacts of the input thermal noise are also analyzed.

Scheme for conditional generation of photon-added coherent state and optical entangled $W$ state

We propose a simple scheme to generate an arbitrary photon-added coherent state of a travelling optical field by using only a set of degenerate parametric amplifiers and single-photon detectors. Particularly, when the single-photon-added coherent state (SPACS) is observed by following, e.g., the novel technique of Zavatta \emph{$et al.$} (Science 306, 660 (2004)), we also obtain the generalized optical entangled $W$ state. Finally, a qualitative analysis of possible losses in our scheme is given.

Metal-Semiconductor Transition in Armchair Carbon Nanotubes by Symmetry Breaking

The electronic band structure of armchair carbon nanotubes may be considerably modified by potentials with angular dependence. Different angular modes V_q ~ cos(q*theta) have been studied within a tight-binding scheme. Using symmetry arguments, we demonstrate a bandgap opening in these metallic nanotubes when certain selection rules are satisfied for both potential and nanotube structure. We estimate the bandgap opening as a function of both the external potential strength and the nanotube radius and suggest an effective mechanism of metal-semiconductor transition by combination of different forms of perturbations.

Metal-Semiconductor Transition and Fermi Velocity Renormalization in Metallic Carbon Nanotubes

Angular perturbations modify the band structure of armchair (and other metallic) carbon nanotubes by breaking the tube symmetry and may induce a metal-semiconductor transition when certain selection rules are satisfied. The symmetry requirements apply for both the nanotube and the perturbation potential, as studied within a nonorthogonal $π$-orbital tight-binding method. Perturbations of two categories are considered: an on-site electrostatic potential and a lattice deformation which changes the off-site hopping integrals. Armchair nanotubes are proved to be robust against the metal-semiconductor transition in second-order perturbation theory due to their high symmetry, but can develop a nonzero gap by extending the perturbation series to higher orders or by combining potentials of different types. An assumption of orthogonality between $π$ orbitals is shown to lead to an accidental electron-hole symmetry and extra selection rules that are weakly broken in the nonorthogonal theory. These results are further generalized to metallic nanotubes of arbitrary chirality.

Optical generation of hybrid entangled state via entangling single-photon-added coherent state

We propose a feasible scheme to realize the optical entanglement of single-photon-added coherent state (SPACS) and show that, besides the Sanders entangled coherent state, the entangled SPACS also leads to new forms of hybrid entanglement of quantum Fock state and classical coherent state. We probe the essential difference of two types of hybrid entangled state (HES). This HES provides a novel link between the discrete- and the continuous-variable entanglement in a natural way.

Electronic response and bandstructure modulation of carbon nanotubes in a transverse electrical field

The electronic properties of carbon nanotubes in a uniform transverse field are investigated within a single orbital tight-binding model. For doped nanotubes, the dielectric function is found to depend not only on symmetry of the tube, but also on radius and Fermi level position. Bandgap opening/closing is predicted for zigzag tubes, while it is found that armchair tubes always remain metallic, which is explained by the symmetry in their configuration. The bandstructures for both types are considerably modified when the field strength is large enough to mix neighboring subbands.
