Eco-PiNN: A Physics-informed Neural Network for Eco-toll Estimation

The eco-toll estimation problem quantifies the expected environmental cost (e.g., energy consumption, exhaust emissions) for a vehicle to travel along a path. This problem is important for societal applications such as eco-routing, which aims to find paths with the lowest exhaust emissions or energy need. The challenges of this problem are three-fold: (1) the dependence of a vehicle's eco-toll on its physical parameters; (2) the lack of access to data with eco-toll information; and (3) the influence of contextual information (i.e. the connections of adjacent segments in the path) on the eco-toll of road segments. Prior work on eco-toll estimation has mostly relied on pure data-driven approaches and has high estimation errors given the limited training data. To address these limitations, we propose a novel Eco-toll estimation Physics-informed Neural Network framework (Eco-PiNN) using three novel ideas, namely, (1) a physics-informed decoder that integrates the physical laws of the vehicle engine into the network, (2) an attention-based contextual information encoder, and (3) a physics-informed regularization to reduce overfitting. Experiments on real-world heavy-duty truck data show that the proposed method can greatly improve the accuracy of eco-toll estimation compared with state-of-the-art methods.

Statistics of weakly nonlinear waves on currents with strong vertical shear

We investigate how the presence of a vertically sheared current affects wave statistics, including the probability of rogue waves, and apply it to a real-world case using measured spectral and shear current data from the Mouth of the Columbia River. A theory for weakly nonlinear waves valid to second order in wave steepness is derived, and used to analyze statistical properties of surface waves; the theory extends the classic theory by Longuet-Higgins [J. Fluid Mech. 12, 3 (1962)] to allow for an arbitrary depth-dependent background flow, $U(z)$, with $U$ the horizontal velocity along the main direction of wave propagation and $z$ the vertical axis. Numerical statistics are collected from a large number of realisations of random, irregular sea-states following a JONSWAP spectrum, on linear and exponential model currents of varying strengths. A number of statistical quantities are presented and compared to a range of theoretical expressions from the literature; in particular the distribution of wave surface elevation, surface maxima, and crest height; the exceedance probability including the probability of rogue waves; the maximum crest height among $N_s$ waves, and the skewness of the surface elevation distribution. We find that compared to no-shear conditions, opposing vertical shear ($U'(z)>0$) leads to increased wave height and increased skewness of the nonlinear-wave elevation distribution, while a following shear ($U'(z)<0$) has opposite effects. With the wave spectrum and velocity profile measured in the Columbia River estuary by Zippel & Thomson [J. Geophys. Res: Oceans 122, 3311 (2017)] our second--order theory predicts that the probability of rogue waves is significantly reduced and enhanced during ebb and flood, respectively, adding support to the notion that shear currents need to be accounted for in wave modelling and prediction.

Emergent Electronic Kagome Lattice in Correlated Charge-Density-Wave State of 1T-TaS$_2$

Quantum materials with tunable correlated and/or topological electronic states, such as the electronic Kagome lattice, provide an ideal platform to study the exotic quantum properties. However, the real-space investigations on the correlated electronic Kagome lattice have been rarely reported. Herein, we report on the electronic Kagome lattice emerging in the correlated charge-density-wave (CDW) state of 1T-TaS$_2$ at ~200 K via variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (VT-STM). This emergent Kagome lattice can be considered a fractional electron-filling superstructure with reduced translational and rotational symmetries, confirmed by STM measurements and density functional theory simulations. The characteristic band structure and density of states of this electronic Kagome lattice are further explored based on theoretical calculations. Our results demonstrate a self-organized electronic Kagome lattice from the correlated CDW state via the effective tuning parameter of temperature and provide a platform to directly explore the interplay of correlated electrons and topological physics.

Generative Time Series Forecasting with Diffusion, Denoise, and Disentanglement

Time series forecasting has been a widely explored task of great importance in many applications. However, it is common that real-world time series data are recorded in a short time period, which results in a big gap between the deep model and the limited and noisy time series. In this work, we propose to address the time series forecasting problem with generative modeling and propose a bidirectional variational auto-encoder (BVAE) equipped with diffusion, denoise, and disentanglement, namely D3VAE. Specifically, a coupled diffusion probabilistic model is proposed to augment the time series data without increasing the aleatoric uncertainty and implement a more tractable inference process with BVAE. To ensure the generated series move toward the true target, we further propose to adapt and integrate the multiscale denoising score matching into the diffusion process for time series forecasting. In addition, to enhance the interpretability and stability of the prediction, we treat the latent variable in a multivariate manner and disentangle them on top of minimizing total correlation. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world data show that D3VAE outperforms competitive algorithms with remarkable margins. Our implementation is available at https://github.com/PaddlePaddle/PaddleSpatial/tree/main/research/D3VAE.

Towards Long-Term Time-Series Forecasting: Feature, Pattern, and Distribution

Long-term time-series forecasting (LTTF) has become a pressing demand in many applications, such as wind power supply planning. Transformer models have been adopted to deliver high prediction capacity because of the high computational self-attention mechanism. Though one could lower the complexity of Transformers by inducing the sparsity in point-wise self-attentions for LTTF, the limited information utilization prohibits the model from exploring the complex dependencies comprehensively. To this end, we propose an efficient Transformerbased model, named Conformer, which differentiates itself from existing methods for LTTF in three aspects: (i) an encoder-decoder architecture incorporating a linear complexity without sacrificing information utilization is proposed on top of sliding-window attention and Stationary and Instant Recurrent Network (SIRN); (ii) a module derived from the normalizing flow is devised to further improve the information utilization by inferring the outputs with the latent variables in SIRN directly; (iii) the inter-series correlation and temporal dynamics in time-series data are modeled explicitly to fuel the downstream self-attention mechanism. Extensive experiments on seven real-world datasets demonstrate that Conformer outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on LTTF and generates reliable prediction results with uncertainty quantification.

Berry curvature dipole and nonlinear Hall effect in two-dimensional Nb$_{2n+1}$Si$_n$Te$_{4n+2}$

Recent experiments have demonstrated interesting physics in a family of two-dimensional (2D) composition-tunable materials Nb$_{2n+1}$Si$_n$Te$_{4n+2}$. Here, we show that owing to its intrinsic low symmetry, metallic nature, tunable composition, and ambient stability, these materials offer a good platform for studying Berry curvature dipole (BCD) and nonlinear Hall effect. Using first-principles calculations, we find that BCD exhibits pronounced peaks in monolayer Nb$_{3}$SiTe$_{6}$ ($n=1$ case). Its magnitude decreases monotonically with $n$ and completely vanishes in the $n\rightarrow\infty$ limit. This variation manifests a special hidden dimensional crossover of the low-energy electronic states in this system. The resulting nonlinear Hall response from BCD in these materials is discussed. Our work reveals pronounced geometric quantities and nonlinear transport physics in Nb$_{2n+1}$Si$_n$Te$_{4n+2}$ family materials, which should be readily detected in experiment.

OPR-Miner: Order-preserving rule mining for time series

Discovering frequent trends in time series is a critical task in data mining. Recently, order-preserving matching was proposed to find all occurrences of a pattern in a time series, where the pattern is a relative order (regarded as a trend) and an occurrence is a sub-time series whose relative order coincides with the pattern. Inspired by the order-preserving matching, the existing order-preserving pattern (OPP) mining algorithm employs order-preserving matching to calculate the support, which leads to low efficiency. To address this deficiency, this paper proposes an algorithm called efficient frequent OPP miner (EFO-Miner) to find all frequent OPPs. EFO-Miner is composed of four parts: a pattern fusion strategy to generate candidate patterns, a matching process for the results of sub-patterns to calculate the support of super-patterns, a screening strategy to dynamically reduce the size of prefix and suffix arrays, and a pruning strategy to further dynamically prune candidate patterns. Moreover, this paper explores the order-preserving rule (OPR) mining and proposes an algorithm called OPR-Miner to discover strong rules from all frequent OPPs using EFO-Miner. Experimental results verify that OPR-Miner gives better performance than other competitive algorithms. More importantly, clustering and classification experiments further validate that OPR-Miner achieves good performance.

Existence and Uniqueness of Constraint Minimizers for the Planar Schrodinger-Poisson System with Logarithmic Potentials

In this paper, we study constraint minimizers $u$ of the planar Schrödinger-Poisson system with a logarithmic convolution potential $\ln |x|\ast u^2$ and a logarithmic external potential $V(x)=\ln (1+|x|^2)$, which can be described by the $L^2$-critical constraint minimization problem with a subcritical perturbation. We prove that there is a threshold $ρ^* \in (0,\infty)$ such that constraint minimizers exist if and only if $0<ρ<ρ^*$. In particular, the local uniqueness of positive constraint minimizers as $ρ\nearrowρ^*$ is analyzed by overcoming the sign-changing property of the logarithmic convolution potential and the non-invariance under translations of the logarithmic external potential.

Homotopic Policy Mirror Descent: Policy Convergence, Implicit Regularization, and Improved Sample Complexity

We propose a new policy gradient method, named homotopic policy mirror descent (HPMD), for solving discounted, infinite horizon MDPs with finite state and action spaces. HPMD performs a mirror descent type policy update with an additional diminishing regularization term, and possesses several computational properties that seem to be new in the literature. We first establish the global linear convergence of HPMD instantiated with Kullback-Leibler divergence, for both the optimality gap, and a weighted distance to the set of optimal policies. Then local superlinear convergence is obtained for both quantities without any assumption. With local acceleration and diminishing regularization, we establish the first result among policy gradient methods on certifying and characterizing the limiting policy, by showing, with a non-asymptotic characterization, that the last-iterate policy converges to the unique optimal policy with the maximal entropy. We then extend all the aforementioned results to HPMD instantiated with a broad class of decomposable Bregman divergences, demonstrating the generality of the these computational properties. As a by product, we discover the finite-time exact convergence for some commonly used Bregman divergences, implying the continuing convergence of HPMD to the limiting policy even if the current policy is already optimal. Finally, we develop a stochastic version of HPMD and establish similar convergence properties. By exploiting the local acceleration, we show that for small optimality gap, a better than $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(\left|\mathcal{S}\right| \left|\mathcal{A}\right| / ε^2)$ sample complexity holds with high probability, when assuming a generative model for policy evaluation.

Nonexistence of Vortices for Rotating Two-Component Focusing Bose Gases

This paper is concerned with ground states of two-component Bose gases confined in a harmonic trap $V(x)=x_1^2+Λ^2 x_2^2$ rotating at the velocity $Ω>0$, where $Λ\ge 1$ and $(x_1, x_2)\in R^2$. We focus on the case where the intraspecies interaction $(-a_1,-a_2)$ and the interspecies interaction $-β$ are both attractive, i.e, $a_1, a_2$ and $β$ are all positive. It is shown that for any $0<Ω<Ω^*:=2$, ground states exist if and only if $0 0$ is the unique positive solution of $-Δw+ w-w^3=0$ in $R^2$. By developing the argument of refined expansions, we further prove the nonexistence of vortices for ground states as $β\nearrowβ^*$, where $0<Ω<Ω^*$ and $0<a_1,\, a_2<a^*$ are fixed.

Asteroseismology of the pulsating extremely low-mass white dwarf SDSS J111215.82+111745.0: a model with $p$-mode pulsations consistent with the observations

SDSS J111215.82+111745.0 is the second pulsating extremely low-mass white dwarf discovered. Two short-period pulsations, 107.56 and 134.275 s, were detected on this star, which would be the first observed pressure mode ($p$-mode) pulsations observed on a white dwarf. While the two potential $p$-modes have yet to be confirmed, they make SDSS J111215.82+111745.0 an interesting object. In this work, we analyzed the whole set of seven periods observed on SDSS J111215.82+111745.0. We adopt three independent period-spacing tests to reveal a roughly 93.4 s mean period spacing of $\ell=1$ $g$-modes, which gives added credence to the $\ell=1$ identifications. Then we perform asteroseismic modeling for this star, in which the H chemical profile is taken as a variable. The stellar parameters $M=0.1650\pm0.0137$ $M_\odot$ and $T_\mathrm{eff}=9750\pm560$ K are determined from the best-fit model and the H/He chemical profiles are also defined. The two suspected $p$-modes are also well represented in the best-fit model, and both the stellar parameters and the pulsation frequencies are in good agreement with the values derived from spectroscopy.

An ultra-high gain single-photon transistor in the microwave regime

A photonic transistor that can switch or amplify an optical signal with a single gate photon requires strong non-linear interaction at the single-photon level. Circuit quantum electrodynamics provides great flexibility to generate such an interaction, and thus could serve as an effective platform to realize a high-performance single-photon transistor. Here we demonstrate such a photonic transistor in the microwave regime. Our device consists of two microwave cavities dispersively coupled to a superconducting qubit. A single gate photon imprints a phase shift on the qubit state through one cavity, and further shifts the resonance frequency of the other cavity. In this way, we realize a gain of the transistor up to 53.4 dB, with an extinction ratio better than 20 dB. Our device outperforms previous devices in the optical regime by several orders in terms of optical gain, which indicates a great potential for application in the field of microwave quantum photonics and quantum information processing.

How Far Are Wireless Networks from Being Truly Deterministic?

With the rapid development of Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology and machine-type communications, various emerging applications appear in industrial productions and our daily lives. Among these, applications like industrial sensing and controlling, remote surgery, and automatic driving require an extremely low latency and a very small jitter. Delivering information deterministically has become one of the the biggest challenges for modern wire-line and wireless communications. In this paper, we present a review of currently available wire-line deterministic networks and discuss the main challenges to build wireless deterministic networks. We also discuss and propose several potential techniques enabling wireless networks to provide deterministic communications. By elaborating the coding/modulation schemes of the physical layer and managing the channel-access/packet-scheduling at the media access control (MAC) layer, it is believed that wireless deterministic communications can be realized in the near future.

Weighted K-stability of $\mathbb Q$-Fano spherical varieties

Let $G$ be a connected, complex reductive Lie group and $X$ a $\mathbb Q$-Fano $G$-spherical variety. In this paper we compute the weighed non-Archimedean functionals of a $G$-equivariant normal test configurations of $X$ via combinatory data. Also we define a modified Futaki invariant with respect to the weight $g$, and give an expression in terms of intersection numbers. Finally we show the equivalence of different notations of stability and gives a stability criterion on $\mathbb Q$-Fano spherical varieties, which is also a criterion of existence of Kähler-Ricci $g$-solitons.

Harmonics-assisted optical phase amplifier

The change in the relative phase between two light fields serves as a basic principle for the measurement of the physical quantity that guides this change. It would therefore be highly advantageous if the relative phase could be amplified to enhance the measurement resolution. One well-known method for phase amplification involves the use of the multi-photon number and path entangled state known as the NOON state; however, a high-number NOON state is very difficult to prepare and is highly sensitive to optical losses. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate in principle a phase amplifier scheme with the assistance of a harmonic generation process. The relative phase difference between two polarization modes in a polarized interferometer is amplified coherently four times with cascaded second-harmonic generation processes. We demonstrate that these amplification processes can be recycled and therefore have the potential to realize much higher numbers of multiple amplification steps. The phase amplification method presented here shows considerable advantages over the method based on NOON states and will be highly promising for use in precision optical measurements.

Partial zeta functions, partial exponential sums, and p-adic estimates

Partial zeta functions of algebraic varieties over finite fields generalize the classical zeta function by allowing each variable to be defined over a possibly different extension field of a fixed finite field. Due to this extra variation their rationality is surprising, and even simple examples are delicate to compute. For instance, we give a detailed description of the partial zeta function of an affine curve where the number of unit poles varies, a property different from classical zeta functions. On the other hand, they do retain some properties similar to the classical case. To this end, we give Chevalley-Warning type bounds for partial zeta functions and L-functions associated to partial exponential sums.

Ground States of Attractive Bose Gases in Rotating Anharmonic Traps

This paper is concerned with ground states of attractive Bose gases confined in an anharmonic trap $V(x)=ω(|x|^2+k|x|^4)$ rotating at the velocity $Ω>0$, where $ω>0$ denotes the trapping frequency, and $k>0$ represents the strength of the quartic term. It is known that for any $Ω>0$, ground states exist in such traps if and only if $0 0$ is the unique positive solution of $ΔQ-Q+Q^{3}=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$. By analyzing the refined energies and expansions of ground states, we prove that there exists a constant $C>0$, independent of $0 0$.

Unified results of compactness and existence for prescribing fractional $Q$-curvatures problem

In this paper we study the problem of prescribing fractional $Q$-curvature of order $2σ$ for a conformal metric on the standard sphere $\Sn$ with $σ\in (0,n/2)$ and $n\geq2$. Compactness and existence results are obtained in terms of the flatness order $β$ of the prescribed curvature function $K$. Making use of integral representations and perturbation result, we develop a unified approach to obtain these results when $β\in [n-2σ,n)$ for all $σ\in (0,n/2)$. This work generalizes the corresponding results of Jin-Li-Xiong [Math. Ann. 369: 109--151, 2017] for $β\in (n-2σ,n)$.
