Towards Top-$K$ Non-Overlapping Sequential Patterns

Sequential pattern mining (SPM) has excellent prospects and application spaces and has been widely used in different fields. The non-overlapping SPM, as one of the data mining techniques, has been used to discover patterns that have requirements for gap constraints in some specific mining tasks, such as bio-data mining. And for the non-overlapping sequential patterns with gap constraints, the Nettree structure has been proposed to efficiently compute the support of the patterns. For pattern mining, users usually need to consider the threshold of minimum support (\textit{minsup}). This is especially difficult in the case of large databases. Although some existing algorithms can mine the top-$k$ patterns, they are approximate algorithms with fixed lengths. In this paper, a precise algorithm for mining \underline{T}op-$k$ \underline{N}on-\underline{O}verlapping \underline{S}equential \underline{P}atterns (TNOSP) is proposed. The top-$k$ solution of SPM is an effective way to discover the most frequent non-overlapping sequential patterns without having to set the \textit{minsup}. As a novel pattern mining algorithm, TNOSP can precisely search the top-$k$ patterns of non-overlapping sequences with different gap constraints. We further propose a pruning strategy named \underline{Q}ueue \underline{M}eta \underline{S}et \underline{P}runing (QMSP) to improve TNOSP's performance. TNOSP can reduce redundancy in non-overlapping sequential mining and has better performance in mining precise non-overlapping sequential patterns. The experimental results and comparisons on several datasets have shown that TNOSP outperformed the existing algorithms in terms of precision, efficiency, and scalability.

Approximate Order-Preserving Pattern Mining for Time Series

The order-preserving pattern mining can be regarded as discovering frequent trends in time series, since the same order-preserving pattern has the same relative order which can represent a trend. However, in the case where data noise is present, the relative orders of many meaningful patterns are usually similar rather than the same. To mine similar relative orders in time series, this paper addresses an approximate order-preserving pattern (AOP) mining method based on (delta-gamma) distance to effectively measure the similarity, and proposes an algorithm called AOP-Miner to mine AOPs according to global and local approximation parameters. AOP-Miner adopts a pattern fusion strategy to generate candidate patterns generation and employs the screening strategy to calculate the supports of candidate patterns. Experimental results validate that AOP-Miner outperforms other competitive methods and can find more similar trends in time series.

Reverse strain-induced snake states in graphene nanoribbons

Strain can tailor the band structures and properties of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with the well-known emergent pseudo-magnetic fields and the corresponding pseudo-Landau levels (pLLs). We design one type of the zigzag GNR (ZGNR) with reverse strains, producing pseudo-magnetic fields with opposite signs in the lower and upper half planes. Therefore, electrons propagate along the interface as "snake states", experiencing opposite Lorentz forces as they cross the zero field border line. By using the Landauer-Buttiker formalism combined with the nonequilibrium Green's function method, the existence and robustness of the reverse strain-induced snake states are further studied. Furthermore, the realization of long-thought pure valley currents in monolayer graphene systems is also proposed in our device.

Frequency-tunable microwave quantum light source based on superconducting quantum circuits

A nonclassical light source is essential for implementing a wide range of quantum information processing protocols, including quantum computing, networking, communication, and metrology. In the microwave regime, propagating photonic qubits that transfer quantum information between multiple superconducting quantum chips serve as building blocks of large-scale quantum computers. In this context, spectral control of propagating single photons is crucial for interfacing different quantum nodes with varied frequencies and bandwidth. Here we demonstrate a microwave quantum light source based on superconducting quantum circuits that can generate propagating single photons, time-bin encoded photonic qubits and qudits. In particular, the frequency of the emitted photons can be tuned in situ as large as 200 MHz. Even though the internal quantum efficiency of the light source is sensitive to the working frequency, we show that the fidelity of the propagating photonic qubit can be well preserved with the time-bin encoding scheme. Our work thus demonstrates a versatile approach to realizing a practical quantum light source for future distributed quantum computing.

Representative Pure Risk Estimation by Using Data from Epidemiologic Studies, Surveys, and Registries: Estimating Risks for Minority Subgroups

Representative risk estimation is fundamental to clinical decision-making. However, risks are often estimated from non-representative epidemiologic studies, which usually underrepresent minorities. "Model-based" methods use population registries to improve externally validity of risk estimation but assume hazard ratios (HR) are generalizable from samples to the target finite population. "Pseudoweighting" methods improve representativeness of studies by using an external probability-based survey as the reference, but the resulting estimators can be biased due to propensity model misspecification or inefficient due to variable pseudoweights or small sample sizes of minorities in the cohort and/or survey. We propose a two-step pseudoweighting procedure that poststratifies the event rates among age/race/sex strata in the pseudoweighted cohort to the population rates to produce efficient and robust pure risk estimation (i.e., a cause-specific absolute risk in the absence of competing events). For developing an all-cause mortality risk model representative for the US, our findings suggest that HRs for minorities are not generalizable, and that surveys can have inadequate numbers of events for minorities. Poststratification on event rates is crucial for obtaining reliable risk estimation for minority subgroups.

Equivariant $\mathbb R$-test configurations of polarized spherical varieties

Let $G$ be a connected, complex reductive Lie group and $G/H$ a spherical homogenous space. Let $(X,L)$ be a polarized $G$-variety which is a spherical embedding of $G/H$. In this paper we classify $G$-equivariant normal $\mathbb R$-test configurations of $(X,L)$ via combinatory data. In particular we classify the special ones, and prove a finiteness theorem of central fibres of $G$-equivariant special $\mathbb R$-test configurations. Also, as an application we study the semistable degeneration problem of a $\mathbb Q$-Fano spherical variety.

Quantum non-stationary phenomena of spin systems in collision models

We investigate the non-stationary phenomenon in a tripartite spin-1/2 system in the collision model (CM) framework. After introducing the dissipation through the system-environment collision for both Markovian and non-Markovian cases, we find the emergence of long-time oscillation in the dynamics of the system and the synchronization among subsystems. We connect the CM description and the quantum master equation in the continuous time limit and explain the existence of the stable oscillation by means of Liouvillian spectrum analysis. The time-dependence of the thermal property and the correlations are investigated, in particular we discuss the possibility of violation of the Landauer's principle in non-Markovian dynamics. In addition, we find that the imperfection of collective dissipation can be compensated by the randomness of the interaction sequence in our CM.

Synchronization of persistent oscillations in spin systems with non-local dissipations

We explore the synchronization phenomenon in the quantum few-body system of spins with the non-local dissipation. Without the external driving, we find that the system can exhibit stable oscillatory behaviors in the long-time dynamics accompanied by the appearance of the purely imaginary eigenvalues of the Liouvillian. Moreover, the oscillations of the next-nearest-neighboring spins are completely synchronized revealed by the quantum trajectory analysis within the stochastic Schrödinger equation. The possibility of the appearance of the long-time oscillations in infinite-size lattice by means of cluster mean-field approximation is also discussed.

Anchor Free remote sensing detector based on solving discrete polar coordinate equation

As the rapid development of depth learning, object detection in aviatic remote sensing images has become increasingly popular in recent years. Most of the current Anchor Free detectors based on key point detection sampling directly regression and classification features, with the design of object loss function based on the horizontal bounding box. It is more challenging for complex and diverse aviatic remote sensing object. In this paper, we propose an Anchor Free aviatic remote sensing object detector (BWP-Det) to detect rotating and multi-scale object. Specifically, we design a interactive double-branch(IDB) up-sampling network, in which one branch gradually up-sampling is used for the prediction of Heatmap, and the other branch is used for the regression of boundary box parameters. We improve a weighted multi-scale convolution (WmConv) in order to highlight the difference between foreground and background. We extracted Pixel level attention features from the middle layer to guide the two branches to pay attention to effective object information in the sampling process. Finally, referring to the calculation idea of horizontal IoU, we design a rotating IoU based on the split polar coordinate plane, namely JIoU, which is expressed as the intersection ratio following discretization of the inner ellipse of the rotating bounding box, to solve the correlation between angle and side length in the regression process of the rotating bounding box. Ultimately, BWP-Det, our experiments on DOTA, UCAS-AOD and NWPU VHR-10 datasets show, achieves advanced performance with simpler models and fewer regression parameters.

Policy Mirror Descent Inherently Explores Action Space

Explicit exploration in the action space was assumed to be indispensable for online policy gradient methods to avoid a drastic degradation in sample complexity, for solving general reinforcement learning problems over finite state and action spaces. In this paper, we establish for the first time an $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(1/ε^2)$ sample complexity for online policy gradient methods without incorporating any exploration strategies. The essential development consists of two new on-policy evaluation operators and a novel analysis of the stochastic policy mirror descent method (SPMD). SPMD with the first evaluation operator, called value-based estimation, tailors to the Kullback-Leibler divergence. Provided the Markov chains on the state space of generated policies are uniformly mixing with non-diminishing minimal visitation measure, an $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(1/ε^2)$ sample complexity is obtained with a linear dependence on the size of the action space. SPMD with the second evaluation operator, namely truncated on-policy Monte Carlo (TOMC), attains an $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(\mathcal{H}_{\mathcal{D}}/ε^2)$ sample complexity, where $\mathcal{H}_{\mathcal{D}}$ mildly depends on the effective horizon and the size of the action space with properly chosen Bregman divergence (e.g., Tsallis divergence). SPMD with TOMC also exhibits stronger convergence properties in that it controls the optimality gap with high probability rather than in expectation. In contrast to explicit exploration, these new policy gradient methods can prevent repeatedly committing to potentially high-risk actions when searching for optimal policies.

Thermal camera based on frequency upconversion and its noise-equivalent temperature difference characterization

We present a scheme for estimating the noise-equivalent temperature difference (NETD) of frequency upconversion detectors (UCDs) that detect mid-infrared (MIR) light. In particular, this letter investigates the frequency upconversion of a periodically polarized crystal based on lithium niobate, where a mid-infrared conversion bandwidth of 220 nm can be achieved in a single poled period by a special design. Experimentally for a temperature target with a central wavelength of 7.89 μm in mid-infrared radiation, we estimated the NETD of the device to be 56 mK. Meanwhile, a direct measurement of the NETD was performed utilizing conventional methods, which resulted in 48 mK. We also compared the NETD of our UCD with commercially available direct mid-infrared detectors. Here, we showed that the limiting factor for further NETD reduction of our device is not primarily from the upconversion process and camera noise, but from the limitations of the heat source performance. Our detectors have good temperature measurement performance and can be used for a variety of applications involving temperature object identification and material structure detection.

On coupled envelope evolution equations in the Hamiltonian theory of nonlinear surface gravity waves

This paper presents a novel theoretical framework in the Hamiltonian theory of nonlinear surface gravity waves. The envelope of surface elevation and the velocity potential on the free water surface are introduced in the framework, which are shown to be a new pair of canonical variables. Using the two envelopes as the main unknowns, coupled envelope evolution equations (CEEEs) are derived based on a perturbation expansion. Similar to the High Order Spectral method, the CEEEs can be derived up to arbitrary order in wave steepness. In contrast, they have a temporal scale as slow as the rate of change of a wave spectrum and allow for the wave fields prescribed on a computational (spatial) domain with a much larger size and with spacing longer than the characteristic wavelength at no expense of accuracy and numerical efficiency. The energy balance equation is derived based on the CEEEs. The nonlinear terms in the CEEEs are in a form of the separation of wave harmonics, due to which an individual term is shown to have clear physical meanings in terms of whether or not it is able to force free waves which obey the dispersion relation. Both the nonlinear terms that can only lead to the forcing of bound waves and these which are capable of forcing free waves are demonstrated, with the latter through the analysis of the quartet and quintet resonant interactions of linear waves. The relations between the CEEEs and two other existing theoretical frameworks are established, including the theory for a train of Stokes waves up to second order in wave steepness [Fenton, J. waterway, Port, Coast. & Ocean Eng., 111, 2, 1985] and a semi-analytical framework for three-dimensional weakly nonlinear surface waves with arbitrary bandwidth and large directional spreading by Li & Li [Phys. Fluids, 33, 7, 2021].

Sequential three-way decisions with a single hidden layer feedforward neural network

The three-way decisions strategy has been employed to construct network topology in a single hidden layer feedforward neural network (SFNN). However, this model has a general performance, and does not consider the process costs, since it has fixed threshold parameters. Inspired by the sequential three-way decisions (STWD), this paper proposes STWD with an SFNN (STWD-SFNN) to enhance the performance of networks on structured datasets. STWD-SFNN adopts multi-granularity levels to dynamically learn the number of hidden layer nodes from coarse to fine, and set the sequential threshold parameters. Specifically, at the coarse granular level, STWD-SFNN handles easy-to-classify instances by applying strict threshold conditions, and with the increasing number of hidden layer nodes at the fine granular level, STWD-SFNN focuses more on disposing of the difficult-to-classify instances by applying loose threshold conditions, thereby realizing the classification of instances. Moreover, STWD-SFNN considers and reports the process cost produced from each granular level. The experimental results verify that STWD-SFNN has a more compact network on structured datasets than other SFNN models, and has better generalization performance than the competitive models. All models and datasets can be downloaded from https://github.com/wuc567/Machine-learning/tree/main/STWD-SFNN.

Exploring the Limits of ChatGPT for Query or Aspect-based Text Summarization

Text summarization has been a crucial problem in natural language processing (NLP) for several decades. It aims to condense lengthy documents into shorter versions while retaining the most critical information. Various methods have been proposed for text summarization, including extractive and abstractive summarization. The emergence of large language models (LLMs) like GPT3 and ChatGPT has recently created significant interest in using these models for text summarization tasks. Recent studies \cite{goyal2022news, zhang2023benchmarking} have shown that LLMs-generated news summaries are already on par with humans. However, the performance of LLMs for more practical applications like aspect or query-based summaries is underexplored. To fill this gap, we conducted an evaluation of ChatGPT's performance on four widely used benchmark datasets, encompassing diverse summaries from Reddit posts, news articles, dialogue meetings, and stories. Our experiments reveal that ChatGPT's performance is comparable to traditional fine-tuning methods in terms of Rouge scores. Moreover, we highlight some unique differences between ChatGPT-generated summaries and human references, providing valuable insights into the superpower of ChatGPT for diverse text summarization tasks. Our findings call for new directions in this area, and we plan to conduct further research to systematically examine the characteristics of ChatGPT-generated summaries through extensive human evaluation.

Sentiment analysis AKA opinion mining is one of the most widely used NLP applications to identify human intentions from their reviews. In the education sector, opinion mining is used to listen to student opinions and enhance their learning-teaching practices pedagogically. With advancements in sentiment annotation techniques and AI methodologies, student comments can be labelled with their sentiment orientation without much human intervention. In this review article, (1) we consider the role of emotional analysis in education from four levels: document level, sentence level, entity level, and aspect level, (2) sentiment annotation techniques including lexicon-based and corpus-based approaches for unsupervised annotations are explored, (3) the role of AI in sentiment analysis with methodologies like machine learning, deep learning, and transformers are discussed, (4) the impact of sentiment analysis on educational procedures to enhance pedagogy, decision-making, and evaluation are presented. Educational institutions have been widely invested to build sentiment analysis tools and process their student feedback to draw their opinions and insights. Applications built on sentiment analysis of student feedback are reviewed in this study. Challenges in sentiment analysis like multi-polarity, polysemous, negation words, and opinion spam detection are explored and their trends in the research space are discussed. The future directions of sentiment analysis in education are discussed.

Astrometric Reduction of Saturnian Satellites with Cassini-ISS Images Degraded by Trailed Stars

Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) mounted on the Cassini spacecraft has taken a lot of images, which provides an important source of high-precision astrometry of some planets and satellites. However, some of these images are degraded by trailed stars. Previously, these degraded images cannot be used for astrometry. In this paper, a new method is proposed to detect and compute the centers of these trailed stars automatically. The method is then performed on the astrometry of ISS images with trailed stars. Finally, we provided 658 astrometric positions between 2004 and 2017 of several satellites that include Enceladus, Dione, Tethys, Mimas and Rhea. Compared with the JPL ephemeris SAT427, the mean residuals of these measurements are 0.11 km and 0.26 km in right ascension and declination, respectively. Their standard deviations are 1.08 km and 1.37 km, respectively. The results show that the proposed method performs astrometric measurements of Cassini ISS images with trailed stars effectively.

Maximal co-occurrence nonoverlapping sequential rule mining

The aim of sequential pattern mining (SPM) is to discover potentially useful information from a given se-quence. Although various SPM methods have been investigated, most of these focus on mining all of the patterns. However, users sometimes want to mine patterns with the same specific prefix pattern, called co-occurrence pattern. Since sequential rule mining can make better use of the results of SPM, and obtain better recommendation performance, this paper addresses the issue of maximal co-occurrence nonoverlapping sequential rule (MCoR) mining and proposes the MCoR-Miner algo-rithm. To improve the efficiency of support calculation, MCoR-Miner employs depth-first search and backtracking strategies equipped with an indexing mechanism to avoid the use of sequential searching. To obviate useless support calculations for some sequences, MCoR-Miner adopts a filtering strategy to prune the sequences without the prefix pattern. To reduce the number of candidate patterns, MCoR-Miner applies the frequent item and binomial enumeration tree strategies. To avoid searching for the maximal rules through brute force, MCoR-Miner uses a screening strategy. To validate the per-formance of MCoR-Miner, eleven competitive algorithms were conducted on eight sequences. Our experimental results showed that MCoR-Miner outperformed other competitive algorithms, and yielded better recommendation performance than frequent co-occurrence pattern mining. All algorithms and datasets can be downloaded from https://github.com/wuc567/Pattern-Mining/tree/master/MCoR-Miner.
