Spin Dynamics of the Spin-1/2 Kagome Lattice Antiferromagnet ZnCu_3(OH)_6Cl_2

We have performed thermodynamic and neutron scattering measurements on the S=1/2 kagome lattice antiferromagnet Zn Cu_3 (OH)_6 Cl_2. The susceptibility indicates a Curie-Weiss temperature of ~ -300 K; however, no magnetic order is observed down to 50 mK. Inelastic neutron scattering reveals a spectrum of low energy spin excitations with no observable gap down to 0.1 meV. The specific heat at low-T follows a power law with exponent less than or equal to 1. These results suggest that an unusual spin-liquid state with essentially gapless excitations is realized in this kagome lattice system.

Multi-color Shallow Decay and Chromatic Breaks in the GRB 050319 Optical Afterglow

Multi-wavelength B, V, R, I observations of the optical afterglow of GRB 050319 were performed by the 1.05-m telescope at Kiso Observatory and the 1.0-m telescope at Lulin Observatory from 1.31 hours to 9.92 hours after the burst. Our R band lightcurves, combined with other published data, can be described by the smooth broken power-law function, with $α_1$ = -0.84 $\pm$0.02 to $α_2$ = -0.48$\pm$0.03, 0.04 days after the GRB. The optical lightcurves are characterized by shallow decays-- as was also observed in the X-rays-- which may have a similar origin, related to energy injection. However, our observations indicate that there is still a puzzle concerning the chromatic breaks in the R band lightcurve (at 0.04 days) and the X-ray lightcurve (at 0.004 days) that remains to be solved.

When Do Internal Shocks End and External Shocks Begin? Early-Time Broadband Modelling of GRB 051111

Even with the renaissance in gamma-ray burst (GRB) research fostered by the Swift satellite, few bursts have both contemporaneous observations at long wavelengths and exquisite observations at later times across the electromagnetic spectrum. We present here contemporaneous imaging with the KAIT robotic optical telescope, dense optical sampling with Lulin, and supplemented with infrared data from PAIRITEL and radio to gamma-ray data from the literature. For the first time, we can test the constancy of microphysical parameters in the internal-external shock paradigm and carefully trace the flow of energy from the GRB to the surrounding medium. KAIT data taken <~1 minute after the start of GRB051111 and coinciding with the fading gamma-ray tail of the prompt emission indicate a smooth re-injection of energy into the shock. No color change is apparent in observations beginning ~1.5 minutes after the GRB and lasting for the first hour after the burst. There are achromatic flux modulations about the best-fit model at late (t~10^4 s) times, possibly due to variations in the external density. We find that the host-galaxy extinction is well fit by a curve similar to that ofthe Small Magellanic Cloud. Low visual extinction, A_V~0.2 mag, combined with high column densities determined from the X-ray and optical spectroscopy (N_H> 10^21 cm^-2), indicate a low dust-to-metals ratio and a possible over-abundance of the light metals. An apparent small ratio of total to selective extinction (R_V~2) argues against dust destruction by the GRB. Time constancy of both the IR/optical/UV spectral energy distribution and the soft X-ray absorption suggests that the absorbing material is not local to the GRB.

Anomalous extinction behaviour towards the Type Ia SN 2003cg

We present optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of the Type Ia SN 2003cg, which exploded in the nearby galaxy NGC 3169. The observations cover a period between -8.5 and +414 days post-maximum. SN 2003cg is a normal but highly-reddened Type Ia event. Its B magnitude at maximum B_max = 15.94+/-0.04 and Delta m_15(B)_obs = 1.12+/-0.04 (Delta m_15(B)_intrinsic = 1.25+/-0.05). Allowing R_v to become a free parameter within the Cardelli et al. (1989) extinction law, simultaneous matches to a range of colour curves of normal SNe Ia yielded E(B-V) = 1.33+/-0.11, and R_v = 1.80+/-0.19. While the value obtained for R_v is small, such values have been invoked in the past, and may imply a grain size which is small compared with the average value for the local ISM.

Neutron scattering from a coordination polymer quantum paramagnet

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements are reported for a powder sample of the spin-1/2 quantum paramagnet $\rm Cu(Quinoxaline)Br_2$. Magnetic neutron scattering is identified above an energy gap of 1.9 meV. Analysis of the sharp spectral maximum at the onset indicates that the material is magnetically quasi-one-dimensional. Consideration of the wave vector dependence of the scattering and polymeric structure further identifies the material as a two-legged spin-1/2 ladder. Detailed comparison of the data to various models of magnetism in this material based on the single mode approximation and the continuous unitary transformation are presented. The latter theory provides an excellent account of the data with leg exchange $J_{\parallel}=2.0$ meV and rung exchange $J_{\perp}=3.3$ meV.

Field Induced Order and Spin Waves in the Pyrochlore Antiferromagnet Tb2Ti2O7

High resolution time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on Tb2Ti2O7 reveal a rich low temperature phase diagram in the presence of a magnetic field applied along [110]. In zero field at T=0.4 K, terbium titanate is a highly correlated cooperative paramagnet with disordered spins residing on a pyrochlore lattice of corner-sharing tetrahedra. Application of a small field condenses much of the magnetic diffuse scattering, characteristic of the disordered spins, into a new Bragg peak characteristic of a polarized paramagnet. At higher fields, a magnetically ordered phase is induced, which supports spin wave excitations indicative of continuous, rather than Ising-like spin degrees of freedom.

Temperature dependent bilayer ferromagnetism in Sr3Ru2O7

The Ruthenium based perovskites exhibit a wide variety of interesting collective phenomena related to magnetism originating from the Ru 4d electrons. Much remains unknown concerning the nature of magnetic fluctuations and excitations in these systems. We present results of detailed inelastic neutron scattering measurements of Sr3Ru2O7 as a function of temperature, probing the ferromagnetic fluctuations of the bilayer structure. A magnetic response is clearly visible for a range of temperatures, T = 3.8 K up to T = 100 K, and for energy transfers between 2 and 14 meV. These measurements indicate that the ferromagnetic fluctuations manifest in the bilayer structure factor persist to surprisingly large temperatures. This behavior may be related to the proximity of the system in zero magnetic field to the metamagnetic/ferromagnetic transition.

Nano-magnetic droplets and implications to orbital ordering in La1-xSrxCoO3

Inelastic cold neutron scattering on LaCoO3 provided evidence for a distinct low energy excitation at 0.6 meV coincident with the thermally induced magnetic transition. Coexisting strong ferromagnetic (FM) and weaker antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations that are dynamic follow the activation to the excited state, identified as the intermediate S=1 spin triplet. This is indicative of dynamical orbital ordering favoring the observed magnetic interactions. With hole doping as in La1-xSrxCoO3, the FM correlations between Co spins become static and isotropically distributed due to the formation of FM droplets. The correlation length and condensation temperature of these droplets increase rapidly with metallicity due to the double exchange mechanism.

Dynamics of composite Haldane spin chains in IPA-CuCl3

Magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet IPA-CuCl3 are studied by cold neutron inelastic scattering. Strongly dispersive gap excitations are observed. Contrary to previously proposed models, the system is best described as an asymmetric quantum spin ladder. The observed spectrum is interpreted in terms of ``composite'' Haldane spin chains. The key difference from actual S=1 chains is a sharp cutoff of the single-magnon spectrum at a certain critical wave vector.

Ordering and Spin Waves in NaNiO2 : A Stacked Quantum Ferromagnet

Neutron scattering measurements on powder NaNiO2 reveal magnetic Bragg peaks and spin waves characteristic of strongly correlated s=1/2 magnetic moments arranged in ferromagnetic layers which are stacked antiferromagnetically. This structure lends itself to stacking sequence frustration in the presence of mixing between nickel and alkali metal sites, possibly providing a natural explanation for the enigmatic spin glass state of the isostructural compound, LiNiO2.

Optical Afterglow Observations of the Unusual Short-Duration Gamma-Ray Burst 040924

The 1-m telescope at Lulin Observatory and the 0.76-m Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope at Lick Observatory were used to observe the optical afterglow of the short-duration (1.2--1.5 s) gamma-ray burst (GRB) 040924. This object has a soft high-energy spectrum, thus making it an exceptional case, perhaps actually belonging to the short-duration tail of the long-duration GRBs. Our data, combined with other reported measurements, show that the early R-band light curve can be described by two power laws with index alpha = -0.7 (at t = 16-50 min) and alpha = -1.06 (at later times). The rather small difference in the spectral indices can be more easily explained by an afterglow model invoking a cooling break rather than a jet break.

GRB follow-up observations in the East-Asian region

In 2004, we established a Japan-Taiwan-China collaboration for GRB study in the East-Asian region. This serves as a valuable addition to the world-wide optical and infrared follow-up network, because the East-Asia region would otherwise be blank. We have been carrying out imaging and spectroscopic follow-up observations at Lulin (Taiwan), Kiso (Japan), WIDGET (Japan) and Xinglong (China). From Xinglong and Kiso, we can locate candidates and obtain early time spectra for afterglows. While WIDGET provides early time observations before the burst, the high-time resolution for multi-band light curves can be obtained at Lulin. With the data from these sites, we can obtain detailed information about the light curve and redshift of GRBs, which are important to understand the mechanism of the afterglows. Up to March 2005, ten follow-up observations have been provided by this East-Asia cooperation. Two optical afterglows were detected, GRB 040924 and GRB 041006. The results of the two detected afterglows are reported in this article.

Magnetic excitations in {Mo72Fe30}

We report cold-neutron inelastic neutron scattering measurements on deuterated samples of the giant polyoxomolybdate magnetic molecule {Mo72Fe30}. The 30 s = 5/2 Fe+3 ions occupy the vertices of an icosidodecahedron, and interact via antiferromagnetic nearest neighbor coupling. The measurements reveal a band of magnetic excitations near E ~ 0.6 meV. The spectrum broadens and shifts to lower energy as the temperature is increased, and also is strongly affected by magnetic fields. The results can be interpreted within the context of an effective three-sublattice spin Hamiltonian.

Partial spin freezing in the quasi-two-dimensional La2(Cu,Li)O4

In conventional spin glasses, the magnetic interaction is not strongly anisotropic and the entire spin system freezes at low temperature. In La2(Cu,Li)O4, for which the in-plane exchange interaction dominates the interplane one, only a fraction of spins with antiferromagnetic correlations extending to neighboring planes become spin-glass. The remaining spins with only in-plane antiferromagnetic correlations remain spin-liquid at low temperature. Such a novel partial spin freezing out of a spin-liquid observed in this cold neutron scattering study is likely due to a delicate balance between disorder and quantum fluctuations in the quasi-two dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg system.

The S=1/2 chain in a staggered field: High-energy bound-spinon state and the effects of a discrete lattice

We report an experimental and theoretical study of the antiferromagnetic S=1/2 chain subject to uniform and staggered fields. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we observe a novel bound-spinon state at high energies in the linear chain compound CuCl2 * 2((CD3)2SO). The excitation is explained with a mean-field theory of interacting S=1/2 fermions and arises from the opening of a gap at the Fermi surface due to confining spinon interactions. The mean-field model also describes the wave-vector dependence of the bound-spinon states, particularly in regions where effects of the discrete lattice are important. We calculate the dynamic structure factor using exact diagonalization of finite length chains, obtaining excellent agreement with the experiments.

Anomalous critical behavior near the quantum critical point of a hole-doped La2CuO4

The Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm for critical phenomena is spectacularly successful whenever the critical temperature is finite and all fluctuation modes, with characteristic energies much smaller than the thermal energy, obey classical statistics. In zero-temperature quantum critical phenomena, classical thermal fluctuations are replaced by zero-point quantum fluctuations and quantum-mechanical generalization of the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm has been a central topic in condensed-matter physics. In this neutron-scattering study on spin fluctuations near the quantum critical point induced by hole-doping in La2CuO4 (Li doping concentration from 0.04 to 0.1), the phase boundary for quantum crossover expected from the generalized quantum theory for critical phenomena was observed for the first time. Furthermore, critical exponent and scaling function become anomalous near the quantum critical point, which has not been expected in current theories.

Photometric Observations of the Type Ia SN 2002er in UGC 10743

Extensive light and colour curves for the Type Ia supernova SN 2002er are presented as part of the European Supernova Collaboration. We have collected UBVRI photometry from ten different telescopes covering the phases from 7 days before until 619 days after maximum light. Corrections for the different instrumental systems and the non-thermal spectrum of the supernova (S-corrections) have been applied. With the densely sampled light curves we can make detailed comparisons to other well-observed objects. SN 2002er most closely resembles SN 1996X after maximum, but clearly shows a different colour evolution before peak light and a stronger shoulder in V and R bands compared to other well-observed SNe Ia. In particular, the rise time appears to be longer than what is expected from rise-time vs.decline-rate relation. We use several methods to determine the reddening towards SN 2002er based on the colour evolution at near peak and at late phases. The uvoir (bolometric) light curve shows great similarity with SN 1996X, but also indications of a higher luminosity, longer rise time and a more pronounced shoulder 25 days past maximum. The interpretation of the light curves was done with two independent light curve codes. Both find that given the luminosity of SN 2002er the 56Ni mass exceeds 0.6 Msun with prefered values near 0.7 Msun. Uncertainties in the exact distance to SN 2002er are the most serious limitation of this measurement. The light curve modelling also indicates a high level of mixing of the nickel in the explosion of SN 2002er.

High Resolution Study of Spin Excitations in the Shastry-Sutherland Singlet Ground State of SrCu2(BO3)2

High resolution, inelastic neutron scattering measurements on SrCu2(BO3)2 reveal the dispersion of the three single triplet excitations continuously across the (H,0) direction within its tetragonal basal plane. These measurements also show distinct Q dependencies for the single and multiple triplet excitations, and that these excitations are largely dispersionless perpendicular to this plane. The temperature dependence of the intensities of these excitations is well described as the complement of the dc-susceptibility of SrCu2(BO3)2.
