The crystalline electric field as a probe for long range antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity in CeFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations of Ce$^{3+}$ in CeFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$($x=0,0.16$). For nonsuperconducting CeFeAsO, the Ce CEF levels have three magnetic doublets in the paramagnetic state, but these doublets split into six singlets when Fe ions order antiferromagnetically. For superconducting CeFeAsO$_{0.84}$F$_{0.16}$ ($T_c=41$ K), where the static AF order is suppressed, the Ce CEF levels have three magnetic doublets at $\hbarω=0,18.7,58.4$ meV at all temperatures. Careful measurements of the intrinsic linewidth $Γ$ and the peak position of the 18.7 meV mode reveal clear anomaly at $T_c$, consistent with a strong enhancement of local magnetic susceptibility $χ^{\prime\prime}(\hbarω)$ below $T_c$. These results suggest that CEF excitations in the rare-earth oxypnictides can be used as a probe of spin dynamics in the nearby FeAs planes.

Coexistence of the spin-density-wave and superconductivity in the (Ba,K)Fe2As2

The relation between the spin-density-wave (SDW) and superconducting order is a central topic in current research on the FeAs-based high Tc superconductors. Conflicting results exist in the LaFeAs(O,F)-class of materials, for which whether the SDW and superconductivity are mutually exclusive or they can coexist has not been settled. Here we show that for the (Ba,K)Fe2As2 system, the SDW and superconductivity can coexist in an extended range of compositions. The availability of single crystalline samples and high value of the energy gaps would make the materials a model system to investigate the high Tc ferropnictide superconductivity.

Structure and Magnetic Order in the NdFeAs(O,F) Superconductor System

The transition temperature Tc~26 K of the recently discovered superconductor LaFeAs(O,F) has been demonstrated to be extremely sensitive to the lanthanide ion, reaching 55 K for the Sm containing oxypnictides. Therefore, it is important to determine how the moment on the lanthanide affects the overall magnetism in these systems. Here we report a neutron diffraction study of the Nd oxypnictides. Long ranged antiferromagnetic order is apparent in NdFeAsO below 1.96 K. Rietveld refinement shows that both Fe and Nd magnetic ordering are required to describe the observed data with the staggered moment 1.55(4) Bohr magneton per Nd and 0.9(1) Bohr magneton per Fe at 0.3 K. The other structural properties such as the tetragonal-orthorhombic distortion are found to be very similar to those in LaFeAsO. Neither the magnetic ordering nor the structural distortion occur in the superconducting sample NdFeAsO0.80F0.20 at any temperatures down to 1.5 K.

Magnetic order in BaFe2As2, the parent compound of the FeAs based superconductors in a new structural family

In addition to higher Tc compared with the ubiquitous cuprates for a material composed of a single electronically active layer, the newly discovered LnFeAsO superconductors offer additional compositional variation. In a similar fashion to the CuO2 layers in cuprates, the FeAs layers now dominate the electronic states that produce superconductivity. Cuprate superconductors distinguish themselves structurally by adopting different stacking of the Cu-O and electronically inactive "spacer" layers. Using the same structural philosophy, materials with the formula (A,K)Fe2As2,A=Ba or Sr have been reported and possess a Tc~38 K. Here, we report the neutron diffraction studies of BaFe2As2 that shows, in contrast to previous studies on the LnFeAsO materials, an antiferromagnetic transition which concurs with first-order structural transition. Although the magnetic and structural transitions occur differently in the AFe2As2 and LnFeAsO-type materials, this work clearly demonstrates that the complete evolution to a low symmetry structure is a pre-requirement for the magnetic order.

Itinerant spin excitations near the hidden order transition in URu2Si2

By means of neutron scattering we show that the high-temperature precursor to the hidden order state of the heavy fermion superconductor URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ exhibits heavily damped incommensurate paramagnons whose strong energy dispersion is very similar to that of the long-lived longitudinal f-spin excitations that appear below T$_{0}$. Since the underlying local f-exchange is preserved we expect only the f-d interactions to change across the phase transition and to cause the paramagnetic damping. The damping exhibits single-ion behavior independent of wave vector and vanishes below the hidden order transition. We suggest that this arises from a transition from valence fluctuations to a hybridized f-d state below T$_{0}$. Here we present evidence that the itinerant excitations, like those in chromium, are due to Fermi surface nesting of hole and electron pockets so that the hidden order phase likely originates from a Fermi-surface instability. We identify wave vectors that span nested regions of a band calculation and that match the neutron spin crossover from incommensurate to commensurate on approach to the hidden order phase.

External magnetic field effects on a distorted kagome antiferromagnet

We report bulk magnetization, and elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements under an external magnetic field, $H$, on the weakly coupled distorted kagome system, Cu_{2}(OD)_3Cl. Our results show that the ordered state below 6.7 K is a canted antiferromagnet and consists of large antiferromagnetic $ac$-components and smaller ferromagnetic $b$-components. By first-principle calculations and linear spin wave analysis, we present a simple spin hamiltonian with non-uniform nearest neighbor exchange interactions resulting in a system of coupled spin trimers with a single-ion anisotropy that can qualitatively reproduce the spin dynamics of Cu_{2}(OD)_3Cl.

Neutron scattering study of the oxypnictide superconductor La(O,F)FeAs

The newly discovered superconductor La(O,F)FeAs (Tc = 26 K) was investigated using the neutron scattering technique. No spin-density-wave (SDW) order was observed in the normal state nor in the superconducting state, both with and without an applied magnetic field of 9 T, consistent with the proposal that SDW and superconductivity are competing in the laminar materials. While our inelastic measurements offer no constraints on the spin dynamic response from d-wave pairing, an upper limit for the magnetic resonance peak predicted from an extended s-wave pairing mechanism is provided. Our measurements also support the energy scale of the calculated phonon spectrum which is used in electron-phonon coupling theory, and fails to produce the high observed Tc.

Dispersive magnetic excitations in the S=1 antiferromagnet Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$

We present powder inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the S=1 dimerized antiferromagnet Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$. The $T=1.4$ K magnetic spectrum exhibits a spin-gap of $Δ\approx 1.0$ meV and a dispersive spectrum with a bandwidth of approximately 1.5 meV. Comparison to coupled dimer models describe the dispersion and scattering intensity accurately and determine the exchange constants in Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$. The wave vector dependent scattering intensity confirms the proposed S=1 dimer bond. Temperature dependent measurements of the magnetic excitations indicate the presence of both singlet-triplet and thermally activated triplet-quintet excitations.

Diagonal and Collinear Incommensurate Spin Structures in underdoped La$_{2-x}$Ba$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$

We have studied incommensurate spin ordering in single crystal underdoped La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4} with x~0.08, 0.05 and 0.025 using neutron scattering techniques. Static incommensurate magnetic order is observed in the La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4} (x=0.05 and 0.025) compounds with ordering wavevectors which are rotated by 45 degree about the commensurate (0.5,0.5,0) position, with respect to that in the superconducting x=0.08 material. These spin modulations are one dimensional in the x=0.05 and 0.025 samples, with ordering wavevectors lying along the orthorhombic b* direction. Such a rotation in the orientation of the static spin ordering as a function of increasing Ba doping, from diagonal to collinear, is roughly coincident with the transition from an insulating to a superconducting ground state and is similar to that observed in the related La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} system. This phenomenon is therefore a generic property of underdoped La-214 cuprates.

Gap excitations in a four-leg Heisenberg spin tube antiferromagnet

Inelastic neutron scattering is used to investigate magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional quantum spin-liquid system Cu2Cl4 D8C4SO2. Contrary to previously conjectured models that relied on bond-alternating nearest neighbor interactions in the spin chains, the dominant interactions are actually next-nearest-neighbor in-chain antiferromagnetic couplings. The appropriate Heisenberg Hamiltonian is equivalent to that of a S = 1/2 4-leg spin-tube with almost perfect one dimensionality and no bond alternation. A partial geometric frustration of rung interactions induces a small incommensurability of short-range spin correlations.

Gapped itinerant spin excitations account for missing entropy in the hidden order state of URu$_2$Si$_2$

One of the primary goals of modern condensed matter physics is to elucidate the nature of the ground state in various electronic systems. Many correlated electron materials, such as high temperature superconductors, geometrically frustrated oxides, and low-dimensional magnets are still the objects of fruitful study because of the unique properties which arise due to poorly understood many-body effects. Heavy fermion metals - materials which have high effective electron masses due to these effects - represent a class of materials with exotic properties, such as unusual magnetism, unconventional superconductivity, and "hidden order" parameters. The heavy fermion superconductor URu2Si2 has held the attention of physicists for the last two decades due to the presence of a "hidden order" phase below 17.5 K. Neutron scattering measurements indicate that the ordered moment is 0.03 $μ_{B}$, much too small to account for the large heat capacity anomaly at 17.5 K. We present recent neutron scattering experiments which unveil a new piece of this puzzle - the spin excitation spectrum above 17.5 K exhibits well-correlated, itinerant-like spin excitations up to at least 10 meV emanating from incommensurate wavevectors. The gapping of these excitations corresponds to a large entropy release and explains the reduction in the electronic specific heat through the transition.

Magnetic Interaction in the Geometrically Frustrated Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet $\rm CuFeO_2$

The spin wave excitations of the geometrically frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLA) $\rm CuFeO_2$ have been measured using high resolution inelastic neutron scattering. Antiferromagnetic interactions up to third nearest neighbors in the ab plane (J_1, J_2, J_3, with $J_2/J_1 \approx 0.44$ and $J_3/J_1 \approx 0.57$), as well as out-of-plane coupling (J_z, with $J_z/J_1 \approx 0.29$) are required to describe the spin wave dispersion relations, indicating a three dimensional character of the magnetic interactions. Two energy dips in the spin wave dispersion occur at the incommensurate wavevectors associated with multiferroic phase, and can be interpreted as dynamic precursors to the magnetoelectric behavior in this system.

The Aspherical Properties of the Energetic Type Ic SN 2002ap as Inferred from its Nebular Spectra

The nebular spectra of the broad-lined, SN 1998bw-like Type Ic SN 2002ap are studied by means of synthetic spectra. Two different modelling techniques are employed. In one technique, the SN ejecta are treated as a single zone, while in the other a density and abundance distribution in velocity is used from an explosion model. In both cases, heating caused by gamma-ray and positron deposition is computed (in the latter case using a Monte Carlo technique to describe the propagation of gamma-rays and positrons), as is cooling via forbidden-line emission. The results are compared, and although general agreement is found, the stratified models are shown to reproduce the observed line profiles much more accurately than the single-zone model. The explosion produced ~ 0.1 Msun of 56Ni. The distribution in velocity of the various elements is in agreement with that obtained from the early-time models, which indicated an ejected mass of ~ 2.5 Msun with a kinetic energy of 4 x 10^{51} erg. Nebular spectroscopy confirms that most of the ejected mass (~ 1.2 Msun) was oxygen. The presence of an oxygen-rich inner core, combined with that of 56Ni at high velocities as deduced from early-time models, suggests that the explosion was asymmetric, especially in the inner part.

From Cooperative Paramagnet to Néel Order in Y_2Ru_2O_7

Spin correlations in the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Y_2Ru_2O_7 with Curie-Weiss temperature $Θ_{CW}=-1100$ K and critical temperature T_N=77 K were examined through neutron scattering. For $T_N<T<Θ_{CW}/3$ the data show spin relaxation with a rate $\hbarΓ= 1.17(9)k_BT$. For T<T_N spectral weight moves to higher energies with substantial changes up to $4\times k_BT_N$. For T<<T_N there is a $Δ=11(1)$ meV energy gap and a pronounced spectral maximum at 19.7 meV. Throughout the temperature range examined the wave vector dependence of inelastic scattering exhibits a broad peak for $Qd\approx 3.8$ (d is Ru-Ru spacing) consistent with dipolar spin correlations.

Quantum spin liquid states in the two dimensional kagome antiferromagnets, ZnxCu4-x(OD)6Cl2

A three-dimensional system of interacting spins typically develops static long-range order when it is cooled. If the spins are quantum (S = 1/2), however, novel quantum paramagnetic states may appear. The most highly sought state among them is the resonating valence bond (RVB) state in which every pair of neighboring quantum spins form entangled spin singlets (valence bonds) and the singlets are quantum mechanically resonating amongst all the possible highly degenerate pairing states. Here we provide experimental evidence for such quantum paramagnetic states existing in frustrated antiferromagnets, ZnxCu4-x(OD)6Cl2, where the S = 1/2 magnetic Cu2+ moments form layers of a two-dimensional kagome lattice. We find that in Cu4(OD)6Cl2, where distorted kagome planes are weakly coupled to each other, a dispersionless excitation mode appears in the magnetic excitation spectrum below ~ 20 K, whose characteristics resemble those of quantum spin singlets in a solid state, known as a valence bond solid (VBS), that breaks translational symmetry. Doping nonmagnetic Zn2+ ions reduces the distortion of the kagome lattice, and weakens the interplane coupling but also dilutes the magnetic occupancy of the kagome lattice. The VBS state is suppressed and for ZnCu3(OD)6Cl2 where the kagome planes are undistorted and 90% occupied by the Cu2+ ions, the low energy spin fluctuations in the spin liquid phase become featureless.

Dynamics of quantum spin liquid and spin solid phases in IPA-CuCl3 under field

Inelastic and elastic neutron scattering is used to study spin correlations in the quasi-one dimensional quantum antiferromagnet IPA-CuCl3 in strong applied magnetic fields. A condensation of magnons and commensurate transverse long-range ordering is observe at a critical filed $H_c=9.5$ T. The field dependencies of the energies and polarizations of all magnon branches are investigated both below and above the transition point. Their dispersion is measured across the entire 1D Brillouin zone in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The critical wave vector of magnon spectrum truncation [Masuda et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 047210 (2006)] is found to shift from h_c 0.35 at H>H_c. A drastic reduction of magnon bandwidths in the ordered phase [Garlea et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 167202 (2007)] is observed and studied in detail. New features of the spectrum, presumably related to this bandwidth collapse, are observed just above the transition field.

Excitations from a Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons in coupled spin ladders

The weakly coupled quasi-one-dimensional spin ladder compound (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$CuCl$_3$ is studied by neutron scattering in magnetic fields exceeding the critical field of Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons. Commensurate long-range order and the associated Goldstone mode are detected and found to be similar to those in a reference 3D quantum magnet. However, for the upper two massive magnon branches the observed behavior is totally different, culminating in a drastic collapse of excitation bandwidth beyond the transition point.

SN 2003du: 480 days in the Life of a Normal Type Ia Supernova

An extensive set of optical and NIR photometry and low-resolution spectra the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2003du was obtained using a number of facilities. The observations started 13 days before B-band maximum light and continued for 480 days with exceptionally good time sampling. The optical photometry was calibrated through the S-correction technique. The UBVRIJHK light curves and the color indices of SN 2003du closely resemble those of normal SNe Ia. SN 2003du reached a B-band maximum of 13.49 (+/-0.02) mag on JD2452766.38 (+/-0.5). We derive a B-band stretch parameter of 0.988 (+/-0.003), which corresponds to dM15=1.02 (+/-0.05), indicative of a SN Ia of standard luminosity. The reddening in the host galaxy was estimated by three methods, and was consistently found to be negligible. We estimate a distance modulus of 32.79 (+/-0.15) mag to the host galaxy, UGC 9391. The peak UVOIR bolometric luminosity of 1.35(+/-0.20) 10^43 erg/s and Arnett's rule implies that M(Ni56)=0.68 (+/-0.14)M_sun of Ni56 was synthesized during the explosion. Modeling of the UVOIR bolometric light curve also indicates M(Ni56) in the range 0.6-0.8 M_sun. The spectral evolution of SN 2003du at both optical and NIR wavelengths also closely resembles normal SNe Ia. In particular, the Si II ratio at maximum R(Si II)=0.22 (+/-0.02) and the time evolution of the blueshift velocities of the absorption line minima are typical. The pre-maximum spectra of SN 2003du showed conspicuous high-velocity features in the Ca II H&K doublet and infrared triplet, and possibly in Si II 6355, lines. We compare the time evolution of the profiles of these lines with other well-observed SNe Ia and we suggest that the peculiar pre-maximum evolution of Si II 6355 line in many SNe Ia is due to the presence of two blended absorption components.
