A hybrid single quantum dot coupled cavity on a CMOS-compatible SiC photonic chip for Purcell-enhanced deterministic single-photon emission

The ability to control nonclassical light emission from a single quantum emitter by an integrated cavity may unleash new perspectives for integrated photonic quantum applications. However, coupling a single quantum emitter to cavity within photonic circuitry towards creation of the Purcell-enhanced single-photon emission is elusive due to the complexity of integrating active devices in low-loss photonic circuits. Here we demonstrate a hybrid micro-ring resonator (HMRR) coupled with self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) for cavity-enhanced deterministic single-photon emission. The HMRR cavity supports whispering-gallery modes with quality factors up to 7800. By further introducing a micro-heater, we show that the photon emission of QDs can be locally and dynamically tuned over one free spectral ranges of the HMRR (~4 nm). This allows precise tuning of individual QDs in resonance with the cavity modes, thereby enhancing single-photon emission with a Purcell factor of about 4.9. Our results on the hybrid integrated cavities coupled with two-level quantum emitters emerge as promising devices for chip-based scalable photonic quantum applications.

Asymptotic theory of $C$-pseudo-cones

In this paper, we study the non-degenerated $C$-pseudo-cones which can be uniquely decomposed into the sum of a $C$-asymptotic set and a $C$-starting point. Combining this with the novel work in \cite{Schneider-A_weighted_Minkowski_theorem}, we introduce the asymptotic weighted co-volume functional $T_Θ(E)$ of the non-degenerated $C$-pseudo-cone $E$, which is also a generalized function with the singular point $o$ (the origin). Using our convolution formula for $T_Θ(E)$, we establish a decay estimate for $T_Θ(E)$ at infinity and present some interesting results. As applications of this asymptotic theory, we prove a weighted Brunn-Minkowski type inequality and study the solutions to the weighted Minkowski problem for pseudo-cones. Moreover, we pose an open problem regarding $T_Θ(E)$, which we call the asymptotic Brunn-Minkowski inequality for $C$-pseudo-cones.

Behavior-Aware Efficient Detection of Malicious EVs in V2G Systems

With the rapid development of electric vehicles (EVs) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, detecting malicious EV drivers is becoming increasingly important for the reliability and efficiency of smart grids. To address this challenge, machine learning (ML) algorithms are employed to predict user behavior and identify patterns of non-cooperation. However, the ML predictions are often untrusted, which can significantly degrade the performance of existing algorithms. In this paper, we propose a safety-enabled group testing scheme, \ouralg, which combines the efficiency of probabilistic group testing with ML predictions and the robustness of combinatorial group testing. We prove that \ouralg is $O(d)$-consistent and $O(d\log n)$-robust, striking a near-optimal trade-off. Experiments on synthetic data and case studies based on \textsc{ACN-Data}, a real-world EV charging dataset validate the efficacy of \ouralg for efficiently detecting malicious users in V2G systems. Our findings contribute to the growing field of algorithms with predictions and provide insights for incorporating distributional ML advice into algorithmic decision-making in energy and transportation-related systems.

Generative AI Enabled Matching for 6G Multiple Access

In wireless networks, applying deep learning models to solve matching problems between different entities has become a mainstream and effective approach. However, the complex network topology in 6G multiple access presents significant challenges for the real-time performance and stability of matching generation. Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has demonstrated strong capabilities in graph feature extraction, exploration, and generation, offering potential for graph-structured matching generation. In this paper, we propose a GenAI-enabled matching generation framework to support 6G multiple access. Specifically, we first summarize the classical matching theory, discuss common GenAI models and applications from the perspective of matching generation. Then, we propose a framework based on generative diffusion models (GDMs) that iteratively denoises toward reward maximization to generate a matching strategy that meets specific requirements. Experimental results show that, compared to decision-based AI approaches, our framework can generate more effective matching strategies based on given conditions and predefined rewards, helping to solve complex problems in 6G multiple access, such as task allocation.

Empowering Cognitive Digital Twins with Generative Foundation Models: Developing a Low-Carbon Integrated Freight Transportation System

Effective monitoring of freight transportation is essential for advancing sustainable, low-carbon economies. Traditional methods relying on single-modal data and discrete simulations fall short in optimizing intermodal systems holistically. These systems involve interconnected processes that affect shipping time, costs, emissions, and socio-economic factors. Developing digital twins for real-time awareness, predictive analytics, and urban logistics optimization requires extensive efforts in knowledge discovery, data integration, and multi-domain simulation. Recent advancements in generative AI offer new opportunities to streamline digital twin development by automating knowledge discovery and data integration, generating innovative simulation and optimization solutions. These models extend digital twins' capabilities by promoting autonomous workflows for data engineering, analytics, and software development. This paper proposes an innovative paradigm that leverages generative AI to enhance digital twins for urban research and operations. Using freight decarbonization as a case study, we propose a conceptual framework employing transformer-based language models to enhance an urban digital twin through foundation models. We share preliminary results and our vision for more intelligent, autonomous, and general-purpose digital twins for optimizing integrated freight systems from multimodal to synchromodal paradigms.

Towards Real-world Deployment of NILM Systems: Challenges and Practices

Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM), as a key load monitoring technology, can much reduce the deployment cost of traditional power sensors. Previous research has largely focused on developing cloud-exclusive NILM algorithms, which often result in high computation costs and significant service delays. To address these issues, we propose a three-tier framework to enhance the real-world applicability of NILM systems through edge-cloud collaboration. Considering the computational resources available at both the edge and cloud, we implement a lightweight NILM model at the edge and a deep learning based model at the cloud, respectively. In addition to the differential model implementations, we also design a NILM-specific deployment scheme that integrates Gunicorn and NGINX to bridge the gap between theoretical algorithms and practical applications. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework, we apply real-world NILM scenario settings and implement the entire process of data acquisition, model training, and system deployment. The results demonstrate that our framework can achieve high decomposition accuracy while significantly reducing the cloud workload and communication overhead under practical considerations.

Generative Diffusion Model-based Downscaling of Observed Sea Surface Height over Kuroshio Extension since 2000

Satellite altimetry has been widely utilized to monitor global sea surface dynamics, enabling investigation of upper ocean variability from basin-scale to localized eddy ranges. However, the sparse spatial resolution of observational altimetry limits our understanding of oceanic submesoscale variability, prevalent at horizontal scales below 0.25o resolution. Here, we introduce a state-of-the-art generative diffusion model to train high-resolution sea surface height (SSH) reanalysis data and demonstrate its advantage in observational SSH downscaling over the eddy-rich Kuroshio Extension region. The diffusion-based model effectively downscales raw satellite-interpolated data from 0.25o resolution to 1/16o, corresponding to approximately 12-km wavelength. This model outperforms other high-resolution reanalysis datasets and neural network-based methods. Also, it successfully reproduces the spatial patterns and power spectra of satellite along-track observations. Our diffusion-based results indicate that eddy kinetic energy at horizontal scales less than 250 km has intensified significantly since 2004 in the Kuroshio Extension region. These findings underscore the great potential of deep learning in reconstructing satellite altimetry and enhancing our understanding of ocean dynamics at eddy scales.

Channel Modeling Framework for Both Communications and Bistatic Sensing Under 3GPP Standard

Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) is considered a promising technology in the B5G/6G networks. The channel model is essential for an ISAC system to evaluate the communication and sensing performance. Most existing channel modeling studies focus on the monostatic ISAC channel. In this paper, the channel modeling framework for bistatic ISAC is considered. The proposed channel modeling framework extends the current 3GPP channel modeling framework and ensures the compatibility with the communication channel model. To support the bistatic sensing function, several key features for sensing are added. First, more clusters with weaker power are generated and retained to characterize the potential sensing targets. Second, the target model can be either deterministic or statistical, based on different sensing scenarios. Furthermore, for the statistical case, different reflection models are employed in the generation of rays, taking into account spatial coherence. The effectiveness of the proposed bistatic ISAC channel model framework is validated by both ray tracing simulations and experiment studies. The compatibility with the 3GPP communication channel model and how to use this framework for sensing evaluation are also demonstrated.

Distributed Scheduling for Throughput Maximization under Deadline Constraint in Wireless Mesh Networks

This paper studies the distributed scheduling of traffic flows with arbitrary deadlines that arrive at their source nodes and are transmitted to different destination nodes via multiple intermediate nodes in a wireless mesh network. When a flow is successfully delivered to its destination, a reward will be obtained, which is the embodiment of network performance and can be expressed by metrics such as throughput or network utility. The objective is to maximize the aggregate reward of all the deadline-constrained flows, which can be transformed into the constrained Markov decision process (CMDP). According to the transformation, a policy gradient-based distributed scheduling (PGDS) method is first proposed, where a primary reward and an auxiliary reward are designed to incentivize each node to independently schedule network resources such as power and subcarriers. The primary reward is generated when flows are successfully delivered to their destinations. The auxiliary reward, designed based on potential-based reward shaping (PBRS) using local information of data transmission, aims to accelerate the convergence speed. Inside this method, a reward feedback scheme is designed to let each node obtain the primary reward. Noting that each node selecting resources independently may cause interference and collision which leads to instability of data transmission, a policy gradient-based resource determination algorithm is proposed. Moreover, the optimality and convergence of the PGDS method are derived. Especially, when a policy obtained by the algorithm is not matched with the optimal policy but can better deal with the interference, an asymptotic optimum still exists and is further derived.

Revolutionizing Wireless Networks with Self-Supervised Learning: A Pathway to Intelligent Communications

With the rapid proliferation of mobile devices and data, next-generation wireless communication systems face stringent requirements for ultra-low latency, ultra-high reliability, and massive connectivity. Traditional AI-driven wireless network designs, while promising, often suffer from limitations such as dependency on labeled data and poor generalization. To address these challenges, we present an integration of self-supervised learning (SSL) into wireless networks. SSL leverages large volumes of unlabeled data to train models, enhancing scalability, adaptability, and generalization. This paper offers a comprehensive overview of SSL, categorizing its application scenarios in wireless network optimization and presenting a case study on its impact on semantic communication. Our findings highlight the potentials of SSL to significantly improve wireless network performance without extensive labeled data, paving the way for more intelligent and efficient communication systems.

Power-Domain Interference Graph Estimation for Full-Duplex Millimeter-Wave Backhauling

Traditional wisdom for network resource management allocates separate frequency-time resources for measurement and data transmission tasks. As a result, the two types of tasks have to compete for resources, and a heavy measurement task inevitably reduces available resources for data transmission. This prevents interference graph estimation (IGE), a heavy yet important measurement task, from being widely used in practice. To resolve this issue, we propose to use power as a new dimension for interference measurement in full-duplex millimeter-wave backhaul networks, such that data transmission and measurement can be done simultaneously using the same frequency-time resources. Our core insight is to consider the mmWave network as a linear system, where the received power of a node is a linear combination of the channel gains. By controlling the powers of transmitters, we can find unique solutions for the channel gains of interference links and use them to estimate the interference. To accomplish resource allocation and IGE simultaneously, we jointly optimize resource allocation and IGE with power control. Extensive simulations show that significant links in the interference graph can be accurately estimated with minimal extra power consumption, independent of the time and carrier frequency offsets between nodes.

Interference Management for Full-Duplex ISAC in B5G/6G Networks: Architectures, Challenges, and Solutions

Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) has been visioned as a key technique for B5G/6G networks. To support monostatic sensing, a full-duplex radio is indispensable to extract echo signals from targets. Such a radio can also greatly improve network capacity via full-duplex communications. However, full-duplex radios in existing ISAC designs are mainly focused on wireless sensing, while the ability of full-duplex communications is usually ignored. In this article, we provide an overview of full-duplex ISAC (FD-ISAC), where a full-duplex radio is used for both wireless sensing and full-duplex communications in B5G/6G networks, with a focus on the fundamental interference management problem in such networks. First, different ISAC architectures are introduced, considering different full-duplex communication modes and wireless sensing modes. Next, the challenging issues of link-level interference and network-level interference are analyzed, illustrating a critical demand on interference management for FD-ISAC. Potential solutions to interference management are then reviewed from the perspective of radio architecture design, beamforming, mode selection, and resource allocation. The corresponding open problems are also highlighted.

InstanceDiffusion: Instance-level Control for Image Generation

Text-to-image diffusion models produce high quality images but do not offer control over individual instances in the image. We introduce InstanceDiffusion that adds precise instance-level control to text-to-image diffusion models. InstanceDiffusion supports free-form language conditions per instance and allows flexible ways to specify instance locations such as simple single points, scribbles, bounding boxes or intricate instance segmentation masks, and combinations thereof. We propose three major changes to text-to-image models that enable precise instance-level control. Our UniFusion block enables instance-level conditions for text-to-image models, the ScaleU block improves image fidelity, and our Multi-instance Sampler improves generations for multiple instances. InstanceDiffusion significantly surpasses specialized state-of-the-art models for each location condition. Notably, on the COCO dataset, we outperform previous state-of-the-art by 20.4% AP$_{50}^\text{box}$ for box inputs, and 25.4% IoU for mask inputs.

Experimentally informed structure optimization of amorphous TiO2 films grown by atomic layer deposition

Amorphous titanium dioxide TiO2 (a-TiO2) has been widely studied, particularly as a protective coating layer on semiconductors to prevent corrosion and promote electron-hole conduction in photoelectrochemical reactions. The stability and longevity of a-TiO2 is strongly affected by the thickness and structural heterogeneity, implying that understanding the structure properties of a-TiO2 is crucial for improving the performance. This study characterized the structural and electronic properties of a-TiO2 thin films (~17nm) grown on Si by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD). Fluctuation spectra V(k) and angular correlation functions were determined with 4-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM), which revealed the distinctive medium-range ordering in the a-TiO2 film. A realistic atomic model of a-TiO2 was established guided by the medium-range ordering and the previously reported short-range ordering of a-TiO2 film, as well as the interatomic potential. The structure was optimized by the StructOpt code using a genetic algorithm that simultaneously minimizes energy and maximizes match to experimental short- and medium-range ordering. The StructOpt a-TiO2 model presents an improved agreements with the medium-range ordering and the k-space location of the dominant 2-fold angular correlations compared with a traditional melt-quenched model. The electronic structure of the StructOpt a-TiO2 model was studied by ab initio calculation and compared to the crystalline phases and experimental results. This work uncovered the medium-range ordering in a-TiO2 thin film and provided a realistic a-TiO2 structure model for further investigation of structure-property relationships and materials design. In addition, the improved multi-objective optimization package StructOpt was provided for structure determination of complex materials guided by experiments and simulations.

Unsupervised Universal Image Segmentation

Several unsupervised image segmentation approaches have been proposed which eliminate the need for dense manually-annotated segmentation masks; current models separately handle either semantic segmentation (e.g., STEGO) or class-agnostic instance segmentation (e.g., CutLER), but not both (i.e., panoptic segmentation). We propose an Unsupervised Universal Segmentation model (U2Seg) adept at performing various image segmentation tasks -- instance, semantic and panoptic -- using a novel unified framework. U2Seg generates pseudo semantic labels for these segmentation tasks via leveraging self-supervised models followed by clustering; each cluster represents different semantic and/or instance membership of pixels. We then self-train the model on these pseudo semantic labels, yielding substantial performance gains over specialized methods tailored to each task: a +2.6 AP$^{\text{box}}$ boost vs. CutLER in unsupervised instance segmentation on COCO and a +7.0 PixelAcc increase (vs. STEGO) in unsupervised semantic segmentation on COCOStuff. Moreover, our method sets up a new baseline for unsupervised panoptic segmentation, which has not been previously explored. U2Seg is also a strong pretrained model for few-shot segmentation, surpassing CutLER by +5.0 AP$^{\text{mask}}$ when trained on a low-data regime, e.g., only 1% COCO labels. We hope our simple yet effective method can inspire more research on unsupervised universal image segmentation.

Debiased Learning for Remote Sensing Data

Deep learning has had remarkable success at analyzing handheld imagery such as consumer photos due to the availability of large-scale human annotations (e.g., ImageNet). However, remote sensing data lacks such extensive annotation and thus potential for supervised learning. To address this, we propose a highly effective semi-supervised approach tailored specifically to remote sensing data. Our approach encompasses two key contributions. First, we adapt the FixMatch framework to remote sensing data by designing robust strong and weak augmentations suitable for this domain. Second, we develop an effective semi-supervised learning method by removing bias in imbalanced training data resulting from both actual labels and pseudo-labels predicted by the model. Our simple semi-supervised framework was validated by extensive experimentation. Using 30\% of labeled annotations, it delivers a 7.1\% accuracy gain over the supervised learning baseline and a 2.1\% gain over the supervised state-of-the-art CDS method on the remote sensing xView dataset.

Hierarchical Open-vocabulary Universal Image Segmentation

Open-vocabulary image segmentation aims to partition an image into semantic regions according to arbitrary text descriptions. However, complex visual scenes can be naturally decomposed into simpler parts and abstracted at multiple levels of granularity, introducing inherent segmentation ambiguity. Unlike existing methods that typically sidestep this ambiguity and treat it as an external factor, our approach actively incorporates a hierarchical representation encompassing different semantic-levels into the learning process. We propose a decoupled text-image fusion mechanism and representation learning modules for both "things" and "stuff". Additionally, we systematically examine the differences that exist in the textual and visual features between these types of categories. Our resulting model, named HIPIE, tackles HIerarchical, oPen-vocabulary, and unIvErsal segmentation tasks within a unified framework. Benchmarked on over 40 datasets, e.g., ADE20K, COCO, Pascal-VOC Part, RefCOCO/RefCOCOg, ODinW and SeginW, HIPIE achieves the state-of-the-art results at various levels of image comprehension, including semantic-level (e.g., semantic segmentation), instance-level (e.g., panoptic/referring segmentation and object detection), as well as part-level (e.g., part/subpart segmentation) tasks. Our code is released at https://github.com/berkeley-hipie/HIPIE.

Dual Brunn-Minkowski inequality for C-star bodies

In this paper, we consider the concept of $C$-star body in a fixed pointed closed convex cone $C$ and study the dual mixed volume for $C$-star bodies. For $C$-star bodies, we establish the corresponding dual Brunn-Minkowski inequality, the dual Minkowski inequality and the dual Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequality. Our dual Brunn-Minkowski inequality for $C$-star bodies strengthens Schneider's Brunn-Minkowski inequality for $C$-coconvex sets.
