Navier-Stokes equation and forward-backward stochastic differential system in the Besov spaces

The Navier-Stokes equation on Rd (d greater or equal to 3) formulated on Besov spaces is considered. Using a stochastic forward-backward differential system, the local existence of a unique solution in B_ r, with r > 1 + d is obtained. We also show p,p p the convergence to solutions of the Euler equation when the viscosity tends to zero. Moreover, we prove the local existence of a unique solution in B_ pr,q, with p > 1, 1 greater or equal to q greater or equal to infinity, r > max(1, d); here the maximal time interval depends on p the viscosity.

A Novel Construction of Complex-valued Gaussian Processes with Arbitrary Spectral Densities and its Application to Excitation Energy Transfer

The recent experimental discoveries about excitation energy transfer (EET) in light harvesting antenna (LHA) attract a lot of interest. As an open non-equilibrium quantum system, the EET demands more rigorous theoretical framework to understand the interaction between system and environment and therein the evolution of reduced density matrix. A phonon is often used to model the fluctuating environment and convolutes the reduced quantum system temporarily. In this paper, we propose a novel way to construct complex-valued Gaussian processes to describe thermal quantum phonon bath exactly by converting the convolution of influence functional into the time correlation of complex Gaussian random field. Based on the construction, we propose a rigorous and efficient computational method, the covariance decomposition (CD) and conditional propagation scheme, to simulate the temporarily entangled reduced system. The new method allows us to study the non-Markovian effect without perturbation under the influence of different spectral densities of the linear system-phonon coupling coefficients. Its application in the study of EET in the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) model Hamiltonian under four different spectral densities is discussed. Since the scaling of our algorithm is linear due to its Monte Carlo nature, the future application of the method for large LHA systems is attractive. In addition, this method can be used to study the effect of correlated initial condition on the reduced dynamics in the future.

High-Cadence and High-Resolution Halpha Imaging Spectroscopy of a Circular Flare's Remote Ribbon with IBIS

We present an unprecedented high-resolution \ha\ imaging spectroscopic observation of a C4.1 flare taken with IBIS on 2011 October 22. The flare consists of a main circular ribbon that occurred in a parasitic magnetic configuration and a remote ribbon that was observed by the IBIS. Such a circular-ribbon flare with a remote brightening is predicted in 3D fan-spine reconnection but so far has been rarely observed. During the flare impulsive phase, we define "core" and "halo" structures in the observed ribbon. Examining the \ha\ emission spectra averaged in the flare core and halo areas, we find that only those from the flare cores show typical nonthermal electron beam heating characteristics. These characteristics include: broad and centrally reversed emission spectra, excess emission in the red wing with regard to the blue wing (i.e., red asymmetry), and redshifted bisectors of the emission spectra. We also observe rather quick timescales for the heating (30 s) and cooling (14--33 s) in the flare core locations. Therefore, we suggest that the flare cores revealed by IBIS track the sites of electron beam precipitation with exceptional spatial and temporal resolution. The flare cores show two-stage motion (a parallel motion along the ribbon followed by an expansion motion perpendicular to the ribbon) during the two impulsive phases of the flare. Some cores jump quickly (30 \kms) between discrete magnetic elements implying reconnection involving different flux tubes. We observe a very high temporal correlation ($\gtrsim0.9$) between the integrated \ha\ and HXR emission during the flare impulsive phase. A short time delay (4.6 s) is also found in the \ha\ emission spikes relative to HXR bursts. The ionization timescale of the cool chromosphere and the extra time taken for the electrons to travel to the remote ribbon site may contribute to this delay.

Potential thermoelectric performance of hole-doped Cu2O

High thermoelectric performance in oxides requires stable conductive materials that have suitable band structures. Here we show based on an analysis of the thermopower and related properties using first-principles calculations and Boltzmann transport theory that hole doped Cu2O may be such a material. We find that hole-doped Cu2O has a high thermopower of above 200 microV/K even with doping levels as high as 5.5x10 20 cm-3 at 500 K, mainly attributed to the heavy valence bands of Cu2O. This is reminiscent of the cobaltate family of high performance oxide thermoelectrics and implies that hole-doped Cu2O could be an excellent thermoelectric material if suitably doped.

High three dimensional thermoelectric performance from low dimensional bands

Reduced dimensionality has long been regarded as an important strategy for increasing thermoelectric performance, for example in superlattices and other engineered structures. Here we point out and illustrate by examples that three dimensional bulk materials can be made to behave as if they were two dimensional from the point of view of thermoelectric performance. Implications for the discovery of new practical thermoelectrics are discussed.

Coordinate-independent sparse sufficient dimension reduction and variable selection

Sufficient dimension reduction (SDR) in regression, which reduces the dimension by replacing original predictors with a minimal set of their linear combinations without loss of information, is very helpful when the number of predictors is large. The standard SDR methods suffer because the estimated linear combinations usually consist of all original predictors, making it difficult to interpret. In this paper, we propose a unified method - coordinate-independent sparse estimation (CISE) - that can simultaneously achieve sparse sufficient dimension reduction and screen out irrelevant and redundant variables efficiently. CISE is subspace oriented in the sense that it incorporates a coordinate-independent penalty term with a broad series of model-based and model-free SDR approaches. This results in a Grassmann manifold optimization problem and a fast algorithm is suggested. Under mild conditions, based on manifold theories and techniques, it can be shown that CISE would perform asymptotically as well as if the true irrelevant predictors were known, which is referred to as the oracle property. Simulation studies and a real-data example demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach.

Acoustic impedance and interface phonon scattering in Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and other semiconducting materials

We present first principles calculations of the phonon dispersions of Bi2Te3 and discuss these in relation to the acoustic phonon interface scattering in ceramics. The phonon dispersions show agreement with what is known from neutron scattering for the optic modes. We find a difference between the generalized gradient approximation and local density results for the acoustic branches. This is a consequence of an artificial compression of the van der Waals bonded gaps in the Bi2Te3 structure when using the generalized gradient approximation. As a result local density approximation calculations provide a better description of the phonon dispersions in Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$. A key characteristic of the acoustic dispersions is the existence of a strong anisotropy in the velocities. We develop a model for interface scattering in ceramics with acoustic wave anisotropy and apply this to Bi2Te3 and compare with PbTe and diamond.

Weighted Poincaré Inequalities for Nonlocal Dirichlet Forms

Let $V$ be a locally bounded measurable function such that $e^{-V}$ is bounded and belongs to $L^1(dx)$, and let $μ_V(dx):=C_V e^{-V(x)} dx$ be a probability measure. We present the criterion for the weighted Poincaré inequality of the non-local Dirichlet form $$ D_{ρ,V}(f,f):=\iint(f(y)-f(x))^2ρ(|x-y|) dy μ_V(dx) $$ on $L^2(μ_V)$. Taking $ρ(r)={e^{-δr}}{r^{-(d+α)}}$ with $0<α<2$ and $δ\geqslant 0$, we get some conclusions for general fractional Dirichlet forms, which can be regarded as a complement of our recent work Wang and Wang (2012), and an improvement of the main result in Mouhot, Russ, and Sire (2011). In this especial setting, concentration of measure for the standard Poincaré inequality is also derived. Our technique is based on the Lyapunov conditions for the associated truncated Dirichlet form, and it is considerably efficient for the weighted Poincaré inequality of the following non-local Dirichlet form $$ D_{ψ,V}(f,f):=\iint(f(y)-f(x))^2ψ(|x-y|) e^{-V(y)} dy e^{-V(x)} dx $$ on $L^2(μ_{2V})$, which is associated with symmetric Markov processes under Girsanov transform of pure jump type.

Synaptic potentiation facilitates memory-like attractor dynamics in cultured in vitro hippocampal networks

Collective rhythmic dynamics from neurons is vital for cognitive functions such as memory formation but how neurons self-organize to produce such activity is not well understood. Attractor-based models have been successfully implemented as a theoretical framework for memory storage in networks of neurons. Activity-dependent modification of synaptic transmission is thought to be the physiological basis of learning and memory. The goal of this study is to demonstrate that using a pharmacological perturbation on in vitro networks of hippocampal neurons that has been shown to increase synaptic strength follows the dynamical postulates theorized by attractor models. We use a grid of extracellular electrodes to study changes in network activity after this perturbation and show that there is a persistent increase in overall spiking and bursting activity after treatment. This increase in activity appears to recruit more "errant" spikes into bursts. Lastly, phase plots indicate a conserved activity pattern suggesting that the network is operating in a stable dynamical state.

Online Verification of Control Parameter Calculations in Communication Based Train Control System

Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) system is the state-of-the-art train control system. In a CBTC system, to guarantee the safety of train operation, trains communicate with each other intensively and adjust their control modes autonomously by computing critical control parameters, e.g. velocity range, according to the information they get. As the correctness of the control parameters generated are critical to the safety of the system, a method to verify these parameters is a strong desire in the area of train control system. In this paper, we present our ideas of how to model and verify the control parameter calculations in a CBTC system efficiently. - As the behavior of the system is highly nondeterministic, it is difficult to build and verify the complete behavior space model of the system online in advance. Thus, we propose to model the system according to the ongoing behavior model induced by the control parameters. - As the parameters are generated online and updated very quickly, the verification result will be meaningless if it is given beyond the time bound, since by that time the model will be changed already. Thus, we propose a method to verify the existence of certain dangerous scenarios in the model online quickly. To demonstrate the feasibility of these proposed approaches, we present the composed linear hybrid automata with readable shared variables as a modeling language to model the control parameters calculation and give a path-oriented reachability analysis technique for the scenario-based verification of this model. We demonstrate the model built for the CBTC system, and show the performance of our technique in fast online verification. Last but not least, as CBTC system is a typical CPS system, we also give a short discussion of the potential directions for CPS verification in this paper.

Observed network dynamics from altering the balance between excitatory and inhibitory neurons in cultured networks

Complexity in the temporal organization of neural systems may be a reflection of the diversity of its neural constituents. These constituents, excitatory and inhibitory neurons, comprise an invariant ratio in vivo and form the substrate for rhythmic oscillatory activity. To begin to elucidate the dynamical mechanisms that underlie this balance, we construct novel neural circuits not ordinarily found in nature. We culture several networks of neurons composed of excitatory and inhibitory cells and use a multi-electrode array to study their temporal dynamics as the balance is modulated. We use the electrode burst as the temporal imprimatur to signify the presence of network activity. Burst durations, inter-burst intervals, and the number of spikes participating within a burst are used to illustrate the vivid dynamical differences between the various cultured networks. When the network consists largely of excitatory neurons, no network temporal structure is apparent. However, the addition of inhibitory neurons evokes a temporal order. Calculation of the temporal autocorrelation shows that when the number of inhibitory neurons is a major fraction of the network, a striking network pattern materializes when none was previously present.

An approximation scheme for SDEs with non-smooth coefficients

Elliptic stochastic differential equations (SDE) make sense when the coefficients are only continuous. We study the corresponding linearized SDE whose coefficients are not assumed to be locally bounded. This leads to existence of $W_{\loc}^{1,p}$ solution flows for elliptic SDEs with Hölder continuous and $\cap_{p} W_{\loc}^{1,p}$ coefficients. Furthermore an approximation scheme is studied from which we obtain a representation for the derivative of the Markov semigroup, and an integration by parts formula.

We give a concrete estimate for the weak Poincare inequality for the O-U Dirichlet form on loop space over simply connected compact Riemannian manifold with strict positive Ricci curvature.

High level architecture evolved modular federation object model

To improve the agility, dynamics, composability, reusability, and development efficiency restricted by monolithic Federation Object Model (FOM), a modular FOM was proposed by High Level Architecture (HLA) Evolved product development group. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art of HLA Evolved modular FOM. In particular, related concepts, the overall impact on HLA standards, extension principles, and merging processes are discussed. Also permitted and restricted combinations, and merging rules are provided, and the influence on HLA interface specification is given. The comparison between modular FOM and Base Object Model (BOM) is performed to illustrate the importance of their combination. The applications of modular FOM are summarized. Finally, the significance to facilitate composable simulation both in academia and practice is presented and future directions are pointed out.

A Poincaré Inequality on Loop Spaces

We investigate properties of measures in infinite dimensional spaces in terms of Poincaré inequalities. A Poincaré inequality states that the $L^2$ variance of an admissible function is controlled by the homogeneous $H^1$ norm. In the case of Loop spaces, it was observed by L. Gross that the homogeneous $H^1$ norm alone may not control the $L^2$ norm and a potential term involving the end value of the Brownian bridge is introduced. Aida, on the other hand, introduced a weight on the Dirichlet form. We show that Aida's modified Logarithmic Sobolev inequality implies weak Logarithmic Sobolev Inequalities and weak Poincaré inequalities with precise estimates on the order of convergence. The order of convergence in the weak Sobolev inequalities are related to weak $L^1$ estimates on the weight function. This and a relation between Logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and weak Poincaré inequalities lead to a Poincaré inequality on the loop space over certain manifolds.
