On Junyan Cao's vanishing theorem for pseudoeffective line bundles

Junyan Cao has obtained a very general vanishing theorem, valid on any compact Kähler manifold, for the cohomology groups with values in a pseudoeffective line bundle twisted by the associated multiplier ideal sheaf. In this note, we give a version of this result in terms of the numerical dimension of the line bundle, instead of the numerical dimension of a given singular metric, which can be smaller.

On a vanishing theorem due to Bogomolov

In this note, we give a new proof of a vanishing result originally due to Bogomolov, and later generalised by Mourougane and Boucksom. The statement holds for arbitrary pseudoeffective line bundles over compact Kähler manifolds, under an assumption on the numerical dimension of the line bundle.

Generation and manipulation of chiral terahertz waves emitted from the three-dimensional topological insulator Bi2Te3

Arbitrary manipulation of broadband terahertz waves with flexible polarization shaping at the source has great potential in expanding real applications such as imaging, information encryption, and all-optically coherent control of terahertz nonlinear phenomena. Topological insulators featuring unique spin-momentum locked surface state have already exhibited very promising prospects in terahertz emission, detection and modulation, which may lay a foundation for future on-chip topological insulator-based terahertz systems. However, polarization shaped terahertz emission with prescribed manners of arbitrarily manipulated temporal evolution of the amplitude and electric-field vector direction based on topological insulators have not yet been explored. Here we systematically investigated the terahertz radiation from topological insulator Bi2Te3 nanofilms driven by femtosecond laser pulses, and successfully realized the generation of efficient chiral terahertz waves with controllable chirality, ellipticity, and principle axis. The convenient engineering of the chiral terahertz waves was interpreted by photogalvanic effect induced photocurrent, while the linearly polarized terahertz waves originated from linear photogalvanic effect induced shift currents. We believe our works not only help further understanding femtosecond coherent control of ultrafast spin currents in light-matter interaction but also provide an effective way to generate spin-polarized terahertz waves and accelerate the proliferation of twisting the terahertz waves at the source.

Terahertz Strong-Field Physics in Light-Emitting Diodes for Terahertz Detection and Imaging

Intense terahertz (THz) electromagnetic fields have been utilized to reveal a variety of extremely nonlinear optical effects in many materials through nonperturbative driving of elementary and collective excitations. However, such nonlinear photoresponses have not yet been discovered in light-emitting diodes (LEDs), letting alone employing them as fast, cost effective, compact, and room-temperature-operating THz detectors and cameras. Here we report ubiquitously available LEDs exhibited gigantic and fast photovoltaic signals with excellent signal-to-noise ratios when being illuminated by THz field strengths >50 kV/cm. We also successfully demonstrated THz-LED detectors and camera prototypes. These unorthodox THz detectors exhibited high responsivities (>1 kV/W) with response time shorter than those of pyroelectric detectors by four orders of magnitude. The detection mechanism was attributed to THz-field-induced nonlinear impact ionization and Schottky contact. These findings not only help deepen our understanding of strong THz field-matter interactions but also greatly contribute to the applications of strong-field THz diagnosis.

1.4-mJ High Energy Terahertz Radiation from Lithium Niobates

Free-space super-strong terahertz (THz) electromagnetic fields offer multifaceted capabilities for reaching extreme nonlinear THz optics, accelerating and manipulating charged particles, and realizing other fascinating applications. However, the lack of powerful solid-state THz sources with single pulse energy >1 mJ is impeding the proliferation of extreme THz applications. The fundamental challenge lies in hard to achieve high efficiency due to high intensity pumping caused crystal damage, linear absorption and nonlinear distortion induced short effective interaction length, and so on. Here, through cryogenically cooling the crystals, delicately tailoring the pump laser spectra, chirping the pump pulses, and magnifying the laser energies, we first successfully realized the generation of 1.4-mJ THz pulses lithium niobates under the excitation of 214-mJ femtosecond laser pulses via tilted pulse front technique. The 800 nm-to-THz energy conversion efficiency reached 0.7%, and a free-space THz peak electric and magnetic fields reached 6.3 MV/cm and 2.1 Tesla. Our numerical simulations based on a frequencydomain second-order nonlinear wave equation under slowly varying envelope approximation reproduced the experimental optimization processes. To show the capability of this super-strong THz source, nonlinear absorption due to field-induced intervalley scattering effect in high conductive silicon induced by strong THz electric field was demonstrated. Such a high energy THz source with a relatively low peak frequency is very appropriate not only for electron acceleration towards table-top X-ray sources but also for extreme THz science and nonlinear applications.

On the hard Lefschetz theorem for pseudoeffective line bundles

In this note, we obtain a number of results related to the hard Lefschetz theorem for pseudoeffective line bundles, due to Demailly, Peternell and Schneider. Our first result states that the holomorphic sections produced by the theorem are in fact parallel, when viewed as currents with respect to the singular Chern connection associated with the metric. Our proof is based on a control of the covariant derivative in the approximation process used in the construction of the section. Then we show that we have an isomorphsim between such parallel sections and higher degree cohomology. As an application, we show that the closedness of such sections induces a linear subspace structure on the tangent bundle. Finally, we discuss some questions related to the optimality of the hard Lefschetz theorem.

Peeking into occluded joints: A novel framework for crowd pose estimation

Although occlusion widely exists in nature and remains a fundamental challenge for pose estimation, existing heatmap-based approaches suffer serious degradation on occlusions. Their intrinsic problem is that they directly localize the joints based on visual information; however, the invisible joints are lack of that. In contrast to localization, our framework estimates the invisible joints from an inference perspective by proposing an Image-Guided Progressive GCN module which provides a comprehensive understanding of both image context and pose structure. Moreover, existing benchmarks contain limited occlusions for evaluation. Therefore, we thoroughly pursue this problem and propose a novel OPEC-Net framework together with a new Occluded Pose (OCPose) dataset with 9k annotated images. Extensive quantitative and qualitative evaluations on benchmarks demonstrate that OPEC-Net achieves significant improvements over recent leading works. Notably, our OCPose is the most complex occlusion dataset with respect to average IoU between adjacent instances. Source code and OCPose will be publicly available.

Inward-growth plating of lithium driven by solid-solution based alloy phase for highly reversible lithium metal anode

Lithium metal batteries (LMB) are vital devices for high-energy-density energy storage, but Li metal anode is highly reactive with electrolyte and forms uncontrolled dendrite that can cause undesirable parasitic reactions thus poor cycling stability and raise safety concerns. Despite remarkable progress made to partly solve these issues, the Li metal still plate at the electrode/electrolyte interface where the parasitic reactions and dendrite formation invariably occur. Here we demonstrate the inward-growth plating of Li into a metal foil while avoiding surface deposition, which is driven by the reversible solid-solution based alloy phase change. Lithiation of the solid solution alloy phase facilitates the freshly generated Li atoms at the surface to sink into the foil, while the reversible alloy phase change is companied by the dealloying reaction during delithiation, which extracts Li atoms from inside of the foil. The yielded dendrite free Li anode produces an enhanced Coulombic efficiency of 99.5 plus or minus 0.2% with a reversible capacity of 1660 mA h $g^{-1}$ (3.3 mA h cm$^{-2}$).

Tunable High-Quality Fano Resonance in Coupled Terahertz Whispering-Gallery-Mode Resonators

Fano resonance is widely discussed in designing novel terahertz components, such as sensors, filters, modulators, and group delay modules. Usually, high quality (Q) factor and flexible tunability of Fano resonance are key requirements for these applications. Here, we present tunable terahertz Fano resonance with a Q factor of 2095 at 0.439 THz in coupled terahertz whispering-gallery-mode resonators (WGMRs). Coupling between a relatively low Q (578) quartz ring and a high Q (2095) silicon ring is employed to generate the Fano resonance. The resonant frequency of the Fano resonance can be actively manipulated by tuning the resonant frequency of the high Q WGMR, which is achieved through utilizing an electrical thermo-optic tuning method, meanwhile, the resonance intensity of the Fano resonance can be engineered by adjusting the coupling strength between two WGMRs. This coupled-WGMR scheme delivers high Q tunable Fano resonance and may contribute to the design of high-performance configurable terahertz devices.

2D Attentional Irregular Scene Text Recognizer

Irregular scene text, which has complex layout in 2D space, is challenging to most previous scene text recognizers. Recently, some irregular scene text recognizers either rectify the irregular text to regular text image with approximate 1D layout or transform the 2D image feature map to 1D feature sequence. Though these methods have achieved good performance, the robustness and accuracy are still limited due to the loss of spatial information in the process of 2D to 1D transformation. Different from all of previous, we in this paper propose a framework which transforms the irregular text with 2D layout to character sequence directly via 2D attentional scheme. We utilize a relation attention module to capture the dependencies of feature maps and a parallel attention module to decode all characters in parallel, which make our method more effective and efficient. Extensive experiments on several public benchmarks as well as our collected multi-line text dataset show that our approach is effective to recognize regular and irregular scene text and outperforms previous methods both in accuracy and speed.

Observation of Kerr nonlinearity and Kerr-like nonlinearity induced by terahertz generation in LiNbO$_3$

Femtosecond laser pulses interacting with LiNbO3 has been widely applied in intense terahertz generation, excitation and imaging of phonon polaritons and modulating light. It is of great importance to study the nonlinearities induced by femtosecond laser pulses in LiNbO3. Here, we demonstrate that both Kerr nonlinearity and Kerr-like nonlinearity induced by terahertz wave occur under the interaction between laser pulses and LiNbO3 using optical pump-probe techniques. We show that the contribution of Kerr-like nonlinearity to pump-probe spectra varies with the interaction length because of the phase mismatching between terahertz wave and laser pulse. We also observed the excitation of the low frequency phonon polaritons. Experimental results are in consistent with theoretical calculation.

Enhancement of Spintronic Terahertz Emission via Annealing in Ferromagnetic Heterostructures

We systematically investigate the influence of annealing effect on terahertz (THz) generation from CoFeB based magnetic nanofilms driven by femtosecond laser pulses. Three times enhancement of THz yields are achieved in W/CoFeB through annealing effect, and double boosting is obtained in Pt/CoFeB. The mechanism of annealing effect originates from the increase of hot electron mean free path induced by crystallization, which is experimentally corroborated by THz transmission measurement on time-domain spectroscopy. Comparison studies of the thickness dependent THz efficiency after annealing are also implemented, and we eventually conclude that annealing and thickness optimization are of importance for scaling up THz intensity. Our observations not only deepen understanding of the spintronic THz radiation mechanism but also provide normal platform for high speed spintronic opto-electronic devices.

Optimization of high performance spintronic terahertz sources

To achieve high efficiency and good performance of spintronic terahertz sources, we propose and corroborate a remnant magnetization method to radiate continuously and stably terahertz pulses from W/CoFeB/Pt magnetic nanofilms without carrying magnets on the transmitters driven by femtosecond laser pulses. We systematically investigate the influences of the pumping central wavelength and find out the optimal wavelength for a fixed sample thickness. We also optimize the incidence angle of the pumping laser and find the emission efficiency is enhanced under oblique incidence. Combing the aforementioned optimizations, we finally obtain comparable radiation efficiency and broadband spectra in W/CoFeB/Pt heterostructures compared with that from 1 mm thick ZnTe nonlinear crystals via optical rectification under the same pumping conditions of 100 fs pulse duration from a Ti:sapphire laser oscillator, which was not previously demonstrated under such pulse duration. We believe our observations not only benefit for a deep insight into the physics of femtosecond spin dynamics, but also help develop novel and cost-effective ultrabroadband spintronic terahertz emitters.

Femtosecond control of terahertz spin-charge conversion in ferromagnetic heterostructures

Employing electron spin instead of charge to develop spintronic devices holds the merits of low-power consumption in information technologies. Meanwhile, the demand for increasing speed in spintronics beyond current CMOS technology has further triggered intensive researches for ultrafast control of spins even up to unprecedent terahertz regime. The femtosecond laser has been emerging as a potential technique to generate an ultrafast spin-current burst for magnetization manipulation. However, there is a great challenge to establish all-optical control and monitor of the femtosecond transient spin current. Deep insights into the physics and mechanism are extremely essential for the technique. Here, we demonstrate coherently nonthermal excitation of femtosecond spin-charge current conversion parallel to the magnetization in W/CoFeB/Pt heterostructures driven by linearly polarized femtosecond laser pulses. Through systematical investigation we observe the terahertz emission polarization depends on both the magnetization direction and structural asymmetry. We attribute this phenomenon of the terahertz generation parallel to the magnetization induced by linearly polarized femtosecond laser pulses probably to inverse spin-orbit torque effect. Our work not only is beneficial to the deep understanding of spin-charge conversion and spin transportation, but also helps develop novel on-chip terahertz opto-spintronic devices.

DCLab: A Web-based System for Digital Logic Experiment Teaching

This Research-to-Practice Work in Progress paper presents DCLab, a web-based system for conducting digital logic experiments online, to improve both the effectiveness and the efficiency of digital logic experiment teaching. DCLab covers all experimental contents required by traditional digital logic experiment classes. It allows the students to draw circuit diagrams or to write VHDL code to design their own circuits, and it provides complete simulation functions. DCLab records the progress of each student and makes it convenient for a student to review the history of his practice. Furthermore, for the instructors, they are able to post homework assignments on DCLab, and the system will automatically add homework projects to the students' home pages. Statistics about how the students perform on the homework will be displayed to the instructors, which may help them develop more effective courses. We have tested DCLab among students in the digital logic course, and the results have confirmed its validity.

Broadband Magnetic-Manipulated Spintronic Terahertz Emitter with Arbitrarily Tunable Polarizations

Flexible manipulation of terahertz-wave polarization during the generation process is very important for terahertz applications, especially for the next-generation on-chip functional terahertz sources. However, current terahertz emitters could not satisfy such demand, hence calling for new mechanism and conceptually new terahertz source. Here we demonstrate a magnetic-field-controlled, highly-efficient, cost-effective, and broadband terahertz source with flexible switch of terahertz polarization states in ferromagnetic heterostructures driven by femtosecond laser pulses. We verify that the chirality, azimuthal angle, and ellipticity of the generated elliptical terahertz waves can be independently manipulated by delicately engineering of the external applied magnetic fields via effectively manipulating the photo-induced spin currents. Such an ultrafast photomagnetic interaction-based, magnetic-field-controlled, and broadband tunable solid-state terahertz source integrated with terahertz polarization tunability function not only has the capability to reveal physical mechanisms of femtosecond spin dynamics, but also demonstrates the feasibility to realize novel on-chip terahertz functional devices, boosting the potential applications for controlling elementary molecular rotations, phonon vibrations, spin precessions, high-speed terahertz communication, and accelerating the development of ultrafast terahertz opto-spintronics.

Electron-Doping Induced Semiconductor to Metal Transitions in ZrSe2 Layers via Copper Atomic Intercalation

Atomic intercalation in two dimensional (2D) layered materials can engineer the electronic structure at the atomic scale, bringing out tunable physical and chemical properties which are quite distinct in comparison with pristine one. Among them, electron-doped engineering induced by intercalation is an efficient route to modulate electronic states in 2D layers. Herein, we demonstrate a semiconducting to the metallic phase transition in zirconium diselenide (ZrSe2) single crystal via controllable incorporation of copper (Cu) atoms. Combined with first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations, our angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) characterizations clearly revealed the emergence of conduction band dispersion at M/L point of Brillouin zone due to Cu-induced electron doping in ZrSe2 interlayers. Moreover, the field-effect transistor (FET) fabricated on ZrSe2 displayed a n-type semiconducting transport behavior, while the Cu-intercalated ZrSe2 posed linear Ids vs Vds curves with metallic character shows n-type doping. The atomic intercalation approach has high potential for realizing transparent electron-doping systems for many specific 2D-based nano-electronics.

A New Two-Dimensional Functional Material with Desirable Bandgap and Ultrahigh Carrier Mobility

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors with direct and modest bandgap and ultrahigh carrier mobility are highly desired functional materials for nanoelectronic applications. Herein, we predict that monolayer CaP3 is a new 2D functional material that possesses not only a direct bandgap of 1.15 eV (based on HSE06 computation), and also a very high electron mobility up to 19930 cm2 V-1 s-1, comparable to that of monolayer phosphorene. More remarkably, contrary to the bilayer phosphorene which possesses dramatically reduced carrier mobility compared to its monolayer counterpart, CaP3 bilayer possesses even higher electron mobility (22380 cm2 V-1 s-1) than its monolayer counterpart. The bandgap of 2D CaP3 can be tuned over a wide range from 1.15 to 0.37 eV (HSE06 values) through controlling the number of stacked CaP3 layers. Besides novel electronic properties, 2D CaP3 also exhibits optical absorption over the entire visible-light range. The combined novel electronic, charge mobility, and optical properties render 2D CaP3 an exciting functional material for future nanoelectronic and optoelectronic applications.
