The formation of type Ia supernovae from carbon-oxygen-silicon white dwarfs

The carbon-oxygen white dwarf (CO WD) + He star channel has been thought to be one of the promising scnarios to produce young type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). Previous studies found that if the mass-accretion rate is greater than a critical value, the He-accreting CO WD will undergo inwardly propagating (off-centre) carbon ignition when it increases its mass close to the Chandrasekhar limit. The inwardly propagating carbon flame was supposed to reach the centre by previous works, leading to the production of an oxygen-neon (ONe) WD that may collapse into a neutron star but not an SN Ia. However, it is still uncertain how the carbon flame propagates under the effect of mixing mechanisms. In the present work, we aim to investigate the off-centre carbon burning of the He-accreting CO WDs by considering the effect of convective mixing. We found that the temperature of the flame is high enough to burn the carbon into silicon-group elements in the outer part of the CO core even if the convective overshooting is considered, but the flame would quench somewhere inside the WD, resulting in the formation of a C-O-Si WD. Owing to the inefficiency of thermohaline mixing, the C-O-Si WD may explode as an SN Ia if it continues to grow in mass. Our radiation transfer simulations show that the SN ejecta with the silicon-rich outer layer will form high-velocity absorption lines in Si II, leading to some similarities to a class of the high-velocity SNe Ia in the spectral evolution. We estimate that the birthrate of SNe Ia with Si-rich envelope is ~ 10^(-4)/yr in our galaxy.

Renormalization of the Mott gap by lattice entropy: The case of 1T-TaS2

In many transition-metal oxides and dichalcogenides, the electronic and lattice degrees of freedom are strongly coupled, giving rise to remarkable phenomena, such as metal-insulator transition (MIT) and charge-density wave (CDW) order. We study this interplay by tracing the instant electronic structure under ab initio molecular dynamics. Applying this method to a 1T-TaS2 layer, we show that the CDW-triggered Mott gap undergoes a continuous reduction as the lattice temperature raises, despite a nearly constant CDW amplitude. Before the CDW order undergoes a sharp first-order transition around the room temperature, the dynamical CDW fluctuation already shrinks the Mott gap size by half. The gap size reduction is one order of magnitude larger than the lattice temperature variation. Our calculation not only provides an important clue to understand the thermodynamics behavior in 1T-TaS2, but also demonstrates a general approach to quantify the lattice entropy effect in MIT.

Giant renormalization of correlation strength in 1T-TaS2 by lattice vibration

The lattice thermodynamics of a 1T-TaS2 layer, e.g. the spontaneous formation of a sqrt13*sqrt13 commensurate charge density wave (CCDW) and vibrations around the equilibrium position, is calculated by ab initio molecular dynamics. Based on that, we examine how the ground-state electronic structure is renormalized by lattice temperature. We show that the band gap within the density functional theory plus onsite-U correction shrinks by half when the temperature raises from 0 K to 200 K. The gap size reduction is one order of magnitude larger than the temperature variation in energy. This giant temperature dependence is closely related to the CCDW-triggered Mottness in 1T-TaS2, and is expected to result in unconventional thermodynamic properties.

Berkeley Supernova Ia Program: Data Release of 637 Spectra from 247 Type Ia Supernovae

We present 637 low-redshift optical spectra collected by the Berkeley Supernova Ia Program (BSNIP) between 2009 and 2018, almost entirely with the Kast double spectrograph on the Shane 3~m telescope at Lick Observatory. We describe our automated spectral classification scheme and arrive at a final set of 626 spectra (of 242 objects) that are unambiguously classified as belonging to Type Ia supernovae (SNe~Ia). Of these, 70 spectra of 30 objects are classified as spectroscopically peculiar (i.e., not matching the spectral signatures of "normal" SNe~Ia) and 79 SNe~Ia (covered by 328 spectra) have complementary photometric coverage. The median SN in our final set has one epoch of spectroscopy, has a redshift of 0.0208 (with a low of 0.0007 and high of 0.1921), and is first observed spectroscopically 1.1 days after maximum light. The constituent spectra are of high quality, with a median signal-to-noise ratio of 31.8 pixel$^{-1}$, and have broad wavelength coverage, with $\sim 95\%$ covering at least 3700--9800~Å. We analyze our dataset, focusing on quantitative measurements (e.g., velocities, pseudo-equivalent widths) of the evolution of prominent spectral features in the available early-time and late-time spectra. The data are available to the community, and we encourage future studies to incorporate our spectra in their analyses.

Flash ionization signatures in the type Ibn supernova SN 2019uo

We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the type Ibn supernova (SN) 2019uo, the second ever SN Ibn with flash ionization (He II, C III, N III) features in its early spectra. SN 2019uo displays a rapid post-peak luminosity decline of 0.1 mag d$^{-1}$ similar to most of the SNe Ibn, but is fainter ($M^V_{max} = -18.30 \pm 0.24$ mag) than a typical SN Ibn and shows a color evolution that places it between SNe Ib and the most extreme SNe Ibn. SN 2019uo shows P-cygni He I features in the early spectra which gradually evolves and becomes emission dominated post peak. It also shows faster evolution in line velocities as compared to most other members of the type Ibn subclass. The bolometric light curve is fairly described by a $^{56}$Ni + circumstellar interaction model.

Evidence for Late-stage Eruptive Mass-loss in the Progenitor to SN2018gep, a Broad-lined Ic Supernova: Pre-explosion Emission and a Rapidly Rising Luminous Transient

We present detailed observations of ZTF18abukavn (SN2018gep), discovered in high-cadence data from the Zwicky Transient Facility as a rapidly rising ($1.4\pm0.1$ mag/hr) and luminous ($M_{g,\mathrm{peak}}=-20$ mag) transient. It is spectroscopically classified as a broad-lined stripped-envelope supernova (Ic-BL SN). The high peak luminosity ($L_{\mathrm{bol}} \gtrsim 3 \times 10^{44}$ erg $\mathrm{sec}^{-1}$), the short rise time ($t_{\mathrm{rise}}= 3$ days in $g$-band), and the blue colors at peak ($g-r\sim-0.4$) all resemble the high-redshift Ic-BL iPTF16asu, as well as several other unclassified fast transients. The early discovery of SN2018gep (within an hour of shock breakout) enabled an intensive spectroscopic campaign, including the highest-temperature ($T_{\mathrm{eff}}\gtrsim40,000$ K) spectra of a stripped-envelope SN. A retrospective search revealed luminous ($M_g \sim M_r \approx -14\,$mag) emission in the days to weeks before explosion, the first definitive detection of precursor emission for a Ic-BL. We find a limit on the isotropic gamma-ray energy release $E_\mathrm{γ,iso}<4.9 \times 10^{48}$ erg, a limit on X-ray emission $L_{\mathrm{X}} < 10^{40}\,$erg sec$^{-1}$, and a limit on radio emission $νL_ν\lesssim 10^{37}\,$erg sec$^{-1}$. Taken together, we find that the early ($<10\,$days) data are best explained by shock breakout in a massive shell of dense circumstellar material ($0.02\,M_\odot$) at large radii ($3 \times 10^{14}\,$cm) that was ejected in eruptive pre-explosion mass-loss episodes. The late-time ($>10$ days) light curve requires an additional energy source, which could be the radioactive decay of Ni-56.

A wide star-black-hole binary system from radial-velocity measurements

All stellar mass black holes have hitherto been identified by X-rays emitted by gas that is accreting onto the black hole from a companion star. These systems are all binaries with black holes below 30 M$_{\odot}$$^{1-4}$. Theory predicts, however, that X-ray emitting systems form a minority of the total population of star-black hole binaries$^{5,6}$. When the black hole is not accreting gas, it can be found through radial velocity measurements of the motion of the companion star. Here we report radial velocity measurements of a Galactic star, LB-1, which is a B-type star, taken over two years. We find that the motion of the B-star and an accompanying H$α$ emission line require the presence of a dark companion with a mass of $68^{+11}_{-13}$ M$_{\odot}$, which can only be a black hole. The long orbital period of 78.9 days shows that this is a wide binary system. The gravitational wave experiments have detected similarly massive black holes$^{7,8}$, but forming such massive ones in a high-metallicity environment would be extremely challenging to current stellar evolution theories$^{9-11}$.

Product Innovation through Internal Startup in Large Software Companies: a Case Study

Product innovation is a risky activity, but when successful, it enables large software companies accrue high profits and leapfrog the competition. Internal startups have been promoted as one way to foster product innovation in large companies, which allows them to innovate as startups do. However, internal startups in large companies are challenging endeavours despite of the promised benefits. How large software companies can leverage internal startups in software product innovation is not fully understood due to the scarcity of the relevant studies. Based on a conceptual framework that combines the elements from the Lean startup approach and an internal corporate venturing model, we conducted a case study of a large software company to examine how a new product was developed through the internal startup effort and struggled to achieve the desired outcomes set by the management. As a result, the conceptual framework was further developed into a Lean startup-enabled new product development model for large software companies.

The Berkeley sample of Type II supernovae: BVRI light curves and spectroscopy of 55 SNe II

In this work, BV RI light curves of 55 Type II supernovae (SNe II) from the Lick Observatory Supernova Search program obtained with the Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope and the 1 m Nickel telescope from 2006 to 2018 are presented. Additionally, more than 150 spectra gathered with the 3 m Shane telescope are published. We conduct an analyse of the peak absolute magnitudes, decline rates, and time durations of different phases of the light and colour curves. Typically, our light curves are sampled with a median cadence of 5.5 days for a total of 5093 photometric points. In average V-band plateau declines with a rate of 1.29 mag (100 days)-1, which is consistent with previously published samples. For each band, the plateau slope correlates with the plateau length and the absolute peak magnitude: SNe II with steeper decline have shorter plateau duration and are brighter. A time-evolution analysis of spectral lines in term of velocities and pseudoequivalent widths is also presented in this paper. Our spectroscopic sample ranges between 1 and 200 days post-explosion and has a median ejecta expansion velocity at 50 days post-explosion of 6500 km/s (Halpha line) and a standard dispersion of 2000 km/s. Nebular spectra are in good agreement with theoretical models using a progenitor star having a mass <16 Msol. All the data are available to the community and will help to understand SN II diversity better, and therefore to improve their utility as cosmological distance indicators.

On the Ca-strong 1991bg-like type Ia supernova 2016hnk: evidence for a Chandrasekhar-mass explosion

We present a comprehensive dataset of optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of type~Ia supernova (SN) 2016hnk, combined with integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of its host galaxy, MCG -01-06-070, and nearby environment. Properties of the SN local environment are characterized by means of single stellar population synthesis applied to IFS observations taken two years after the SN exploded. SN 2016hnk spectra are compared to other 1991bg-like SNe Ia, 2002es-like SNe Ia, and Ca-rich transients. In addition, abundance stratification modelling is used to identify the various spectral features in the early phase spectral sequence and the dataset is also compared to a modified non-LTE model previously produced for the sublumnious SN 1999by. SN 2016hnk is consistent with being a sub-luminous (M$_{\rm B}=-16.7$ mag, s$_{\rm BV}$=0.43$\pm$0.03), highly reddened object. IFS of its host galaxy reveals both a significant amount of dust at the SN location, as well as residual star formation and a high proportion of old stellar populations in the local environment compared to other locations in the galaxy, which favours an old progenitor for SN 2016hnk. Inspection of a nebular spectrum obtained one year after maximum contains two narrow emission lines attributed to the forbidden [Ca II] $λλ$7291,7324 doublet with a Doppler shift of 700 km s$^{-1}$. Based on various observational diagnostics, we argue that the progenitor of SN 2016hnk was likely a near Chandrasekhar-mass ($M_{\rm Ch}$) carbon-oxygen white dwarf that produced 0.108 $M_\odot$ of $^{56}$Ni. Our modeling suggests that the narrow [Ca II] features observed in the nebular spectrum are associated with $^{48}$Ca from electron capture during the explosion, which is expected to occur only in white dwarfs that explode near or at the $M_{\rm Ch}$ limit.

SN 2017gmr: An energetic Type II-P supernova with asymmetries

We present high-cadence ultraviolet (UV), optical, and near-infrared (NIR) data on the luminous Type II-P supernova SN 2017gmr from hours after discovery through the first 180 days. SN 2017gmr does not show signs of narrow, high-ionization emission lines in the early optical spectra, yet the optical lightcurve evolution suggests that an extra energy source from circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction must be present for at least 2 days after explosion. Modeling of the early lightcurve indicates a ~500R$_{\odot}$ progenitor radius, consistent with a rather compact red supergiant, and late-time luminosities indicate up to 0.130 $\pm$ 0.026 M$_{\odot}$ of $^{56}$Ni are present, if the lightcurve is solely powered by radioactive decay, although the $^{56}$Ni mass may be lower if CSM interaction contributes to the post-plateau luminosity. Prominent multi-peaked emission lines of H$α$ and [O I] emerge after day 154, as a result of either an asymmetric explosion or asymmetries in the CSM. The lack of narrow lines within the first two days of explosion in the likely presence of CSM interaction may be an example of close, dense, asymmetric CSM that is quickly enveloped by the spherical supernova ejecta.

Observations of Type Ia Supernova 2014J for Nearly 900 Days and Constraints on Its Progenitor System

We present extensive ground-based and $Hubble~Space~Telescope$ ($HST$) photometry of the highly reddened, very nearby type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2014J in M82, covering the phases from 9 days before to about 900 days after the $B$-band maximum. SN 2014J is similar to other normal SNe Ia near the maximum light, but it shows flux excess in the $B$ band in the early nebular phase. This excess flux emission can be due to light scattering by some structures of circumstellar materials located at a few 10$^{17}$ cm, consistent with a single degenerate progenitor system or a double degenerate progenitor system with mass outflows in the final evolution or magnetically driven winds around the binary system. At t$\sim$+300 to $\sim$+500 days past the $B$-band maximum, the light curve of SN 2014J shows a faster decline relative to the $^{56}$Ni decay. Such a feature can be attributed to the significant weakening of the emission features around [Fe III] $λ$4700 and [Fe II] $λ$5200 rather than the positron escape as previously suggested. Analysis of the $HST$ images taken at t$>$600 days confirms that the luminosity of SN 2014J maintains a flat evolution at the very late phase. Fitting the late-time pseudo-bolometric light curve with radioactive decay of $^{56}$Ni, $^{57}$Ni and $^{55}$Fe isotopes, we obtain the mass ratio $^{57}$Ni/$^{56}$Ni as $0.035 \pm 0.011$, which is consistent with the corresponding value predicted from the 2D and 3D delayed-detonation models. Combined with early-time analysis, we propose that delayed-detonation through single degenerate scenario is most likely favored for SN 2014J.

The Cold and Dusty Circumstellar Matter around Fast-expanding Type Ia Supernovae

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) play key roles in revealing the accelerating expansion of the universe, but our knowledge about their progenitors is still very limited. Here we report the discovery of a rigid dichotomy in circumstellar (CS) environments around two subclasses of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) as defined by their distinct photospheric velocities. For the SNe Ia with high photospheric velocities (HV), we found a significant excess flux in blue light during 60-100 days past maximum, while this phenomenon is absent for SNe with normal photospheric velocity (Normal). This blue excess can be attributed to light echoes by circumstellar dust located at a distance of about 1-3x10^{17} cm from the HV subclass. Moreover, we also found that the HV SNe Ia show systematically evolving Na I absorption line by performing a systematic search of variable Na I absorption lines in spectra of all SNe Ia, whereas this evolution is rarely seen in Normal ones. The evolving Na I absorption can be modeled in terms of photoionization model, with the location of the gas clouds at a distance of about 2x10^{17} cm, in striking agreement with the location of CS dust inferred from B-band light curve excess. These observations show clearly that the progenitors of HV and Normal subclasses are systematically different, suggesting that they are likely from single and double degenerate progenitor systems, respectively.

Mechanism of Synergistic Effects of Neutron- and Gamma-Ray-Radiated PNP Bipolar Transistors

The synergistic effects of neutron and gamma ray radiated PNP transistors are systematically investigated as functions of the neutron fluence, gamma ray dose, and dose rate. We find that the damages show a `tick'-like dependence on the gamma ray dose after the samples are radiated by neutrons. Two negative synergistic effects are derived, both of which have similar magnitudes as the ionization damage (ID) itself. The first one depends linearly on the gamma ray dose, whose slope depends quadratically on the initial displacement damage (DD) and can be attributed to the healing of neutron-radiation-induced defects in silicon. The second one has an exponential decay with the gamma ray dose, whose amplitude shows a rather strong enhanced low-dose-rate sensitivity (ELDRS) effect and can be attributed to the passivation of neutron-induced defects near the silica/silicon interface by the gamma-ray-generated protons in silica, which can penetrate the silica/silicon interface to passivate the neutron-induced defects in silicon. The simulated results based on the proposed model match the experimental data very well, but differ from previous model, which does not assume annihilation or passivation of the displacement defects. The unraveled defect annealing mechanism is important because it implies that displacement damages can be repaired by gamma ray radiation or proton diffusion, which can have important device applications in the space or other extreme environments.

The Young and Nearby Normal Type Ia Supernova 2018gv: UV-Optical Observations and the Earliest Spectropolarimetry

The non-detection of companion stars in Type Ia supernova (SN) progenitor systems lends support to the notion of double-degenerate (DD) systems and explosions triggered by the merging of two white dwarfs. This very asymmetric process should lead to a conspicuous polarimetric signature. By contrast, observations consistently find very low continuum polarization as the signatures from the explosion process largely dominate over the pre-explosion configuration within several days. Critical information about the interaction of the ejecta with a companion and any circumstellar matter is encoded in the early polarization spectra. In this study, we obtain spectropolarimetry of SN\,2018gv with the ESO Very Large Telescope at $-$13.6 days relative to the $B-$band maximum light, or $\sim$5 days after the estimated explosion --- the earliest spectropolarimetric observations to date of any Type Ia SN. These early observations still show a low continuum polarization ($\lesssim$0.2\%) and moderate line polarization (0.30$\pm$0.04\% for the prominent \ion{Si}{2} $λ$6355 feature and 0.85$\pm$0.04\% for the high-velocity Ca component). The high degree of spherical symmetry implied by the low line and continuum polarization at this early epoch is consistent with explosion models of delayed detonations and is inconsistent with the merger-induced explosion scenario. The dense UV and optical photometry and optical spectroscopy within the first $\sim$100 days after the maximum light indicate that SN\,2018gv is a normal Type Ia SN with similar spectrophotometric behavior to SN\,2011fe.

The Type II-P Supernova 2017eaw: from explosion to the nebular phase

The nearby SN 2017eaw is a Type II-P (``plateau') supernova showing early-time, moderate CSM interaction. We present a comprehensive study of this SN including the analysis of high-quality optical photometry and spectroscopy covering the very early epochs up to the nebular phase, as well as near-UV and near-infrared spectra, and early-time X-ray and radio data. The combined data of SNe 2017eaw and 2004et allow us to get an improved distance to the host galaxy, NGC 6946, as $D \sim 6.85$ $\pm 0.63$ Mpc; this fits in recent independent results on the distance of the host and disfavors the previously derived (30% shorter) distances based on SN 2004et. From modeling the nebular spectra and the quasi-bolometric light curve, we estimate the progenitor mass and some basic physical parameters for the explosion and the ejecta. Our results agree well with previous reports on a RSG progenitor star with a mass of $\sim15-16$ M$_\odot$. Our estimation on the pre-explosion mass-loss rate ($\dot{M} \sim3 \times 10^{-7} -$ $1\times 10^{-6} M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$) agrees well with previous results based on the opacity of the dust shell enshrouding the progenitor, but it is orders of magnitude lower than previous estimates based on general light-curve modeling of Type II-P SNe. Combining late-time optical and mid-infrared data, a clear excess at 4.5 $μ$m can be seen, supporting the previous statements on the (moderate) dust formation in the vicinity of SN 2017eaw.

Probing the Final-stage Progenitor Evolution for Type IIP Supernova 2017eaw in NGC 6946

We presented a detailed analysis of progenitor properties of type IIP supernova 2017eaw in NGC 6946, based on the pre-explosion images and early-time observations obtained immediately after the explosion. An unusually red star, with M$_{F814W}$ = $-$6.9 mag and m$_{F606W}$$-$ m$_{F814W}=$2.9$\pm$0.2 mag, can be identified at the SN position in the pre-discovery Hubble Space Telescope(HST) images taken in 2016. The observed spectral energy distribution of this star, covering the wavelength of 0.6-2.0$\ \mathrm{μm}$, matches that of an M4-type red supergiant (RSG) with a temperature of about 3550 K. These results suggest that SN 2017eaw has a RSG progenitor with an initial mass of 12$\pm$2 M$_\odot$. The absolute F814W-band magnitude of this progenitor star is found to evolve from $-$7.2 mag in 2004 to $-$6.9 mag in 2016. Such a dimming effect is, however, unpredicted for a RSG in its neon/oxygen burning phase when its luminosity should modestly increase. The spectrum of SN 2017eaw taken a few hours after discovery clearly shows a narrow H$_α$ emission feature blueshifted by $\sim$160 km s$^{-1}$. This narrow component disappeared in the spectrum taken two days later, suggesting the presence of a circumstellar material (CSM) shell (i.e., at a distance of $<$2.1-4.3$\times$10$^{14}$ cm). Combining the inferred distance with the expansion velocity of the CSM, we suggest that the progenitor of SN 2017eaw should have experienced violent mass loss at about 1-2 years prior to explosion, perhaps invoked by pulsational envelop ejection. This mechanism may help explain its luminosity decline in 2016 as well as the lack of detections of RSGs with initial mass in the range of 17 M$_\odot<$ M $<$ 25 M$_\odot$ as progenitors of SNe IIP.

LISA: a MATLAB package for Longitudinal Image Sequence Analysis

Large sequences of images (or movies) can now be obtained on an unprecedented scale, which poses fundamental challenges to the existing image analysis techniques. The challenges include heterogeneity, (automatic) alignment, multiple comparisons, potential artifacts, and hidden noises. This paper introduces our MATLAB package, Longitudinal Image Sequence Analysis (LISA), as a one-stop ensemble of image processing and analysis tool for comparing a general class of images from either different times, sessions, or subjects. Given two contrasting sequences of images, the image processing in LISA starts with selecting a region of interest in two representative images, followed by automatic or manual segmentation and registration. Automatic segmentation de-noises an image using a mixture of Gaussian distributions of the pixel intensity values, while manual segmentation applies a user-chosen intensity cut-off value to filter out noises. Automatic registration aligns the contrasting images based on a mid-line regression whereas manual registration lines up the images along a reference line formed by two user-selected points. The processed images are then rendered for simultaneous statistical comparisons to generate D, S, T, and P-maps. The D map represents a curated difference of contrasting images, the S map is the non-parametrically smoothed differences, the T map presents the variance-adjusted, smoothed differences, and the P-map provides multiplicity-controlled p-values. These maps reveal the regions with significant differences due to either longitudinal, subject-specific, or treatment changes. A user can skip the image processing step to dive directly into the statistical analysis step if the images have already been processed. Hence, LISA offers flexibility in applying other image pre-processing tools. LISA also has a parallel computing option for high definition images.
