Logic Bugs in IoT Platforms and Systems: A Review

In recent years, IoT platforms and systems have been rapidly emerging. Although IoT is a new technology, new does not mean simpler (than existing networked systems). Contrarily, the complexity (of IoT platforms and systems) is actually being increased in terms of the interactions between the physical world and cyberspace. The increased complexity indeed results in new vulnerabilities. This paper seeks to provide a review of the recently discovered logic bugs that are specific to IoT platforms and systems. In particular, 17 logic bugs and one weakness falling into seven categories of vulnerabilities are reviewed in this survey.

Development of readout electronics a novel beam monitoring system for ion research facility accelerator

This article presents the readout electronics of a novel beam monitoring system for ion research facility accelerator. The readout electronics are divided into Front-end Card (FEC) and Readout Control Unit (RCU). FEC uses Topmetal II minus to processes the energy of the hitting particles and convert it into a voltage signal. The main function of RCU is to digitize the analog output signal of FEC and format the raw data. On the other hand, the RCU also processes the control commands from the host and distributes the commands according to the mapping. The readout electronic has been characterized and calibrated in the laboratory, and have been installed with the detector. Implementation and testing of readout electronics have been discussed.

Empirical Fourier Decomposition

In this paper, a novel decomposition method for non-stationary and nonlinear signals is proposed. This method is inspired by the adaptive wavelet filter bank of the empirical wavelet transform (EWT) and Fourier intrinsic band functions (FIBFs) of the Fourier decomposition method (FDM). Therefore, the proposed approach is entitled as empirical Fourier decomposition (EFD). EFD is defined as the adaptive bandpass filter bank, regarded as the adaptive FIBFs based on the segment of the Fourier spectrum. Firstly, an enhanced segmentation technology of the Fourier spectrum based is presented. Secondly, the framework of EFD is established both in a continuous series and a discrete series. Finally, combined with the Hilbert transform, EFD is extended to a time-frequency representation. To verify the effectiveness of EFD, three non-stationary multimode signals, a simulated free vibration, and one real ECG signal are tested. The results manifest that EFD is more effective, compared with EWT and FDM, with higher processing precision, computation efficiency and noise robustness particularly to the closely-spaced frequencies and high-frequency noise.

Query-bag Matching with Mutual Coverage for Information-seeking Conversations in E-commerce

Information-seeking conversation system aims at satisfying the information needs of users through conversations. Text matching between a user query and a pre-collected question is an important part of the information-seeking conversation in E-commerce. In the practical scenario, a sort of questions always correspond to a same answer. Naturally, these questions can form a bag. Learning the matching between user query and bag directly may improve the conversation performance, denoted as query-bag matching. Inspired by such opinion, we propose a query-bag matching model which mainly utilizes the mutual coverage between query and bag and measures the degree of the content in the query mentioned by the bag, and vice verse. In addition, the learned bag representation in word level helps find the main points of a bag in a fine grade and promotes the query-bag matching performance. Experiments on two datasets show the effectiveness of our model.

Spontaneous photo-generated carrier separation of SnO/BiOX (X=Cl, Br, I) bilayer under visible light irradiation for water splitting

Alloying in 2D materials plays a more and more important role due to wide range bandgap tunability and integrating the advantages of HER and OER. Here, the novel bilayers of SnO/BiOX (X= Cl, Br and I) bilayer are constructed to integrate the advantages of narrow bandgap and separating photo-generated carriers. The bandgap of the bilayers can be tuned from 1.09 to 1.84 eV, remarkably improving the utilization of solar energy. The large difference in effective masses and built-in electric field effectively hamper the fast recombination of photo-generated carries, which highly enhances the photocatalytic efficiency. Besides that, the type-II band alignment guarantee the two half reactions could occur at different surfaces. Moreover, the optical absorption (the strong transition between band edges and high joint density of states) and band-edge level further confirm the SnO/BiOX (X= Cl and Br) bilayer is a promising candidate for overall water-splitting.

Feature Fusion Detector for Semantic Cognition of Remote Sensing

The value of remote sensing images is of vital importance in many areas and needs to be refined by some cognitive approaches. The remote sensing detection is an appropriate way to achieve the semantic cognition. However, such detection is a challenging issue for scale diversity, diversity of views, small objects, sophisticated light and shadow backgrounds. In this article, inspired by the state-of-the-art detection framework FPN, we propose a novel approach for constructing a feature fusion module that optimizes feature context utilization in detection, calling our system LFFN for Layer-weakening Feature Fusion Network. We explore the inherent relevance of different layers to the final decision, and the incentives of higher-level features to lower-level features. More importantly, we explore the characteristics of different backbone networks in the mining of basic features and the correlation utilization of convolutional channels, and call our upgraded version as advanced LFFN. Based on experiments on the remote sensing dataset from Google Earth, our LFFN has proved effective and practical for the semantic cognition of remote sensing, achieving 89% mAP which is 4.1% higher than that of FPN. Moreover, in terms of the generalization performance, LFFN achieves 79.9% mAP on VOC 2007 and achieves 73.0% mAP on VOC 2012 test, and advacned LFFN obtains the mAP values of 80.7% and 74.4% on VOC 2007 and 2012 respectively, outperforming the comparable state-of-the-art SSD and Faster R-CNN models.

Jointly embedding the local and global relations of heterogeneous graph for rumor detection

The development of social media has revolutionized the way people communicate, share information and make decisions, but it also provides an ideal platform for publishing and spreading rumors. Existing rumor detection methods focus on finding clues from text content, user profiles, and propagation patterns. However, the local semantic relation and global structural information in the message propagation graph have not been well utilized by previous works. In this paper, we present a novel global-local attention network (GLAN) for rumor detection, which jointly encodes the local semantic and global structural information. We first generate a better integrated representation for each source tweet by fusing the semantic information of related retweets with the attention mechanism. Then, we model the global relationships among all source tweets, retweets, and users as a heterogeneous graph to capture the rich structural information for rumor detection. We conduct experiments on three real-world datasets, and the results demonstrate that GLAN significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art models in both rumor detection and early detection scenarios.

Learning review representations from user and product level information for spam detection

Opinion spam has become a widespread problem in social media, where hired spammers write deceptive reviews to promote or demote products to mislead the consumers for profit or fame. Existing works mainly focus on manually designing discrete textual or behavior features, which cannot capture complex semantics of reviews. Although recent works apply deep learning methods to learn review-level semantic features, their models ignore the impact of the user-level and product-level information on learning review semantics and the inherent user-review-product relationship information. In this paper, we propose a Hierarchical Fusion Attention Network (HFAN) to automatically learn the semantics of reviews from the user and product level. Specifically, we design a multi-attention unit to extract user(product)-related review information. Then, we use orthogonal decomposition and fusion attention to learn a user, review, and product representation from the review information. Finally, we take the review as a relation between user and product entity and apply TransH to jointly encode this relationship into review representation. Experimental results obtained more than 10\% absolute precision improvement over the state-of-the-art performances on four real-world datasets, which show the effectiveness and versatility of the model.

Quality Assessment of Stereoscopic 360-degree Images from Multi-viewports

Objective quality assessment of stereoscopic panoramic images becomes a challenging problem owing to the rapid growth of 360-degree contents. Different from traditional 2D image quality assessment (IQA), more complex aspects are involved in 3D omnidirectional IQA, especially unlimited field of view (FoV) and extra depth perception, which brings difficulty to evaluate the quality of experience (QoE) of 3D omnidirectional images. In this paper, we propose a multi-viewport based fullreference stereo 360 IQA model. Due to the freely changeable viewports when browsing in the head-mounted display (HMD), our proposed approach processes the image inside FoV rather than the projected one such as equirectangular projection (ERP). In addition, since overall QoE depends on both image quality and depth perception, we utilize the features estimated by the difference map between left and right views which can reflect disparity. The depth perception features along with binocular image qualities are employed to further predict the overall QoE of 3D 360 images. The experimental results on our public Stereoscopic OmnidirectionaL Image quality assessment Database (SOLID) show that the proposed method achieves a significant improvement over some well-known IQA metrics and can accurately reflect the overall QoE of perceived images.

No-Reference Light Field Image Quality Assessment Based on Micro-Lens Image

Light field image quality assessment (LF-IQA) plays a significant role due to its guidance to Light Field (LF) contents acquisition, processing and application. The LF can be represented as 4-D signal, and its quality depends on both angular consistency and spatial quality. However, few existing LF-IQA methods concentrate on effects caused by angular inconsistency. Especially, no-reference methods lack effective utilization of 2-D angular information. In this paper, we focus on measuring the 2-D angular consistency for LF-IQA. The Micro-Lens Image (MLI) refers to the angular domain of the LF image, which can simultaneously record the angular information in both horizontal and vertical directions. Since the MLI contains 2-D angular information, we propose a No-Reference Light Field image Quality assessment model based on MLI (LF-QMLI). Specifically, we first utilize Global Entropy Distribution (GED) and Uniform Local Binary Pattern descriptor (ULBP) to extract features from the MLI, and then pool them together to measure angular consistency. In addition, the information entropy of Sub-Aperture Image (SAI) is adopted to measure spatial quality. Extensive experimental results show that LF-QMLI achieves the state-of-the-art performance.

Good Motive but Bad Design: Why ARM MPU Has Become an Outcast in Embedded Systems

As more and more embedded devices are connected to the Internet, leading to the emergence of Internet-of-Things (IoT), previously less tested (and insecure) devices are exposed to miscreants. To prevent them from being compromised, the memory protection unit (MPU), which is readily available on many devices, has the potential to become a free lunch for the defenders. To our surprise, the MPU is seldom used by real-world products. The reasons are multi-fold. While there are non-technical reasons such as compatibility issues, more importantly, we found that MPU brings virtually no security enhancement at the expense of decreased performance and responsiveness. In this work, we investigate the MPU adoption in major real-time operating systems (RTOSs), in particular, the FreeRTOS, and try to pinpoint the fundamental reasons to explain why MPU is not favored. We hope our findings can inspire new remedial solutions to change the situation. We also review the latest MPU design and provide technical suggestions to build more secure embedded systems.

TextField: Learning A Deep Direction Field for Irregular Scene Text Detection

Scene text detection is an important step of scene text reading system. The main challenges lie on significantly varied sizes and aspect ratios, arbitrary orientations and shapes. Driven by recent progress in deep learning, impressive performances have been achieved for multi-oriented text detection. Yet, the performance drops dramatically in detecting curved texts due to the limited text representation (e.g., horizontal bounding boxes, rotated rectangles, or quadrilaterals). It is of great interest to detect curved texts, which are actually very common in natural scenes. In this paper, we present a novel text detector named TextField for detecting irregular scene texts. Specifically, we learn a direction field pointing away from the nearest text boundary to each text point. This direction field is represented by an image of two-dimensional vectors and learned via a fully convolutional neural network. It encodes both binary text mask and direction information used to separate adjacent text instances, which is challenging for classical segmentation-based approaches. Based on the learned direction field, we apply a simple yet effective morphological-based post-processing to achieve the final detection. Experimental results show that the proposed TextField outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by a large margin (28% and 8%) on two curved text datasets: Total-Text and CTW1500, respectively, and also achieves very competitive performance on multi-oriented datasets: ICDAR 2015 and MSRA-TD500. Furthermore, TextField is robust in generalizing to unseen datasets. The code is available at https://github.com/YukangWang/TextField.

There is no isolated interface edge in very supercritical percolation

We consider the Bernoulli bond percolation model in a box $Λ$ (not necessarily parallel to the directions of the lattice) in the regime where the percolation parameter is close to $1$. We condition the configuration on the event that two opposite faces of the box are disconnected. We couple this configuration with an unconstrained percolation configuration. The interface edges are the edges which differ in the two configurations. We prove that, typically, each interface edge is within a distance of order $\ln|Λ|$ of another interface edge or of a pivotal edge. We derive an estimate for the law of an edge which is far from the cut and the interface edges.

LSTM Language Models for LVCSR in First-Pass Decoding and Lattice-Rescoring

LSTM based language models are an important part of modern LVCSR systems as they significantly improve performance over traditional backoff language models. Incorporating them efficiently into decoding has been notoriously difficult. In this paper we present an approach based on a combination of one-pass decoding and lattice rescoring. We perform decoding with the LSTM-LM in the first pass but recombine hypothesis that share the last two words, afterwards we rescore the resulting lattice. We run our systems on GPGPU equipped machines and are able to produce competitive results on the Hub5'00 and Librispeech evaluation corpora with a runtime better than real-time. In addition we shortly investigate the possibility to carry out the full sum over all state-sequences belonging to a given word-hypothesis during decoding without recombination.

Discovering and Understanding the Security Hazards in the Interactions between IoT Devices, Mobile Apps, and Clouds on Smart Home Platforms

A smart home connects tens of home devices to the Internet, where an IoT cloud runs various home automation applications. While bringing unprecedented convenience and accessibility, it also introduces various security hazards to users. Prior research studied smart home security from several aspects. However, we found that the complexity of the interactions among the participating entities (i.e., devices, IoT clouds, and mobile apps) has not yet been systematically investigated. In this work, we conducted an in-depth analysis of five widely-used smart home platforms. Combining firmware analysis, network traffic interception, and blackbox testing, we reverse-engineered the details of the interactions among the participating entities. Based on the details, we inferred three legitimate state transition diagrams for the three entities, respectively. Using these state machines as a reference model, we identified a set of unexpected state transitions. To confirm and trigger the unexpected state transitions, we implemented a set of phantom devices to mimic a real device. By instructing the phantom devices to intervene in the normal entity-entity interactions, we have discovered several new vulnerabilities and a spectrum of attacks against real-world smart home platforms.

The coexistence of magnetism and ferroelectricity in 3d transition metal doped SnTe monolayer

The realization of multiferroicity in 2D nanomaterials is crucially important for designing advanced nanoelectronic devices such as non-volatile multistate data storage. In this work, the coexistence of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity is reported in monolayer SnTe system by transition metal (TM) doping. Based on first-principles calculations, the spontaneous spin polarization could be realized by TM doping in ferroelectric SnTe monolayer. In addition to in-plane ferroelectric polarization, the out-of-plane ferroelectric polarization emerges in Mn (Fe)-doped SnTe monolayer due to the internal displacement of TM from the surface. Interestingly, the crystalline field centered on TM and interaction between the dopant and Te gradually enhanced with the increment of atomic number of doping elements, which explains why the formation energy decreases. The realization of multiferroics in SnTe monolayer could provide theoretical guidance for experimental preparation of low-dimensional multiferroic materials.

A new look at the interfaces in percolation

We propose a new definition of the interface in the context of the Bernoulli percolation model. We construct a coupling between two percolation configurations, one which is a standard percolation configuration, and one which is a percolation configuration conditioned on a disconnection event. We define the interface as the random set of the edges where these two configurations differ. We prove that, inside a cubic box $Λ$, the interface between the top and the bottom of the box is typically localised within a distance of order $(\ln |Λ|)^2$ of the set of the pivotal edges. We prove also that, in our dynamical coupling, the typical speed of the pivotal edges remains bounded as the box $Λ$ grows.

The localisation of low-temperature interfaces in $d$ dimensional Ising model

We study the Ising model in a box $Λ$ in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ (not necessarily parallel to the directions of the lattice) with Dobrushin boundary conditions at low temperature. We couple the spin configuration with the configurations under $+$ and $-$ boundary conditions and we define the interface as the edges whose endpoints have the same spins in the $+$ and $-$ configurations but different spins with the Dobrushin boundary conditions. We prove that, inside the box $Λ$, the interface is localized within a distance of order $\ln^2|Λ|$ of the set of the edges which are connected to the top by a $+$ path and connected to the bottom by a $-$ path.
