Ionic-liquid-gating induced protonation and superconductivity in FeSe, FeSe0.93S0.07, ZrNCl, 1T-TaS2, and Bi2Se3

We report protonation in several compounds by an ionic-liquid-gating method, with optimized gating conditions. This leads to single superconducting phases for several compounds. Non-volatility of protons allow post-gating magnetization and transport measurements. The superconducting transition temperature $T_C$ is enhanced to 43.5~K for FeSe$_{0.93}$S$_{0.07}$, and 41~K for FeSe after protonation. Superconductivity with $T_c$$\approx$15~K for ZrNCl, $\approx$7.2~K for 1$T$-TaS$_2$, and $\approx$3.8~K for Bi$_2$Se$_3$ are induced after protonation. Electric transport in protonated FeSe$_{0.93}$S$_{0.07}$ confirms high-temperature superconductivity. Our $^{1}$H NMR measurements on protonated FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$ reveal enhanced spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/^{1}T_1$ with increasing $x$, which is consistent with LDA calculations that H$^{+}$ are located in the interstitial sites close to the anions.

Domain wall pinning and hard magnetic phase in Co-doped bulk single crystalline Fe3GeTe2

We report the effects of cobalt doping on the magnetic properties of two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2. Single crystals of (Fe{1-x}Cox)3GeTe2 with x=0-0.78 were successfully synthesized and characterized with x-ray diffraction, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. Both the Curie-Weiss temperature and ferromagnetic (FM) ordered moment of Fe3GeTe2 are gradually suppressed upon Co doping. A kink in zero-field-cooling low field M(T) curve which is previously explained as an antiferromagnetic transition is observed for samples with x=0-0.58. Our detailed magnetization measurements and theoretical calculations strongly suggest that this kink is originated from the pinning of magnetic domain walls. The domain pinning effects are suddenly enhanced when the doping concentration of cobalt is around 50%, both the coercive field Hc and the magnetic remanence to saturated magnetization ratio MR/MS are largely improved and a hard magnetic phase emerges in bulk single crystal samples. The strong doping dependent magnetic properties suggest more spintronic applications of Fe3GeTe2.

A family of high-temperature ferromagnetic monolayers with locked spin-dichroism-mobility anisotropy: MnNX and CrCX (X=Cl, Br, I; C=S, Se, Te)

Two-dimensional magnets have received increasing attention since Cr2Ge2Te6 and CrI3 were experimentally exfoliated and measured in 2017. Although layered ferromagnetic metals were demonstrated at room temperature, a layered ferromagnetic semiconductor with high Curie temperature (Tc) is yet to be unveiled. Here, we theoretically predicted a family of high Tc ferromagnetic monolayers, namely MnNX and CrCX (X=Cl, Br and I; C=S, Se and Te). Their Tc values were predicted from over 100 K to near 500 K with Monte Carlo simulations using an anisotropic Heisenberg model. Eight members among them show semiconducting bandgaps varying from roughly 0.23 to 1.85 eV. These semiconducting monolayers also show extremely large anisotropy, i.e. ~101 for effective masses and ~102 for carrier mobilities, along the two in-plane lattice directions of these layers. Additional orbital anisotropy leads to a spin-locked linear dichroism, in different from previously known circular and linear dichroisms in layered materials. Together with the mobility anisotropy, it offers a spin-, dichroism- and mobility-anisotropy locking. These results manifest the potential of this 2D family for both fundamental research and high performance spin-dependent electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Stacking tunable interlayer magnetism in bilayer CrI3

Diverse interlayer tunability of physical properties of two-dimensional layers mostly lies in the covalent-like quasi-bonding that is significant in electronic structures but rather weak for energetics. Such characteristics result in various stacking orders that are energetically comparable but may significantly differ in terms of electronic structures, e.g. magnetism. Inspired by several recent experiments showing interlayer anti-ferromagnetically coupled CrI3 bilayers, we carried out first-principles calculations for CrI3 bilayers. We found that the anti-ferromagnetic coupling results from a new stacking order with the C2/m space group symmetry, rather than the graphene-like one with R3 as previously believed. Moreover, we demonstrated that the intra- and inter-layer couplings in CrI3 bilayer are governed by two different mechanisms, namely ferromagnetic super-exchange and direct-exchange interactions, which are largely decoupled because of their significant difference in strength at the strong- and weak-interaction limits. This allows the much weaker interlayer magnetic coupling to be more feasibly tuned by stacking orders solely. Given the fact that interlayer magnetic properties can be altered by changing crystal structure with different stacking orders, our work opens a new paradigm for tuning interlayer magnetic properties with the freedom of stacking order in two dimensional layered materials.

Towards Real-Time Respiratory Motion Prediction based on Long Short-Term Memory Neural Networks

Radiation therapy of thoracic and abdominal tumors requires incorporating the respiratory motion into treatments. To precisely account for the patient respiratory motions and predict the respiratory signals, a generalized model for predictions of different types of respiratory motions is desired. The aim of this study is to explore the feasibility of developing a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)-based model for the respiratory signal prediction. To achieve that, 1703 sets of Real-Time Position Management data were collected from retrospective studies across three clinical institutions. These datasets were separated as the training, internal validity and external validity groups. 1187 datasets were used for model development and the remaining 516 datasets were used to test the generality power of the model. Furthermore, an exhaustive grid search was implemented to find the optimal hyper-parameters of the LSTM model. The hyper-parameters are the number of LSTM layers, the number of hidden units, the optimizer, the learning rate, the number of epochs, and the length of time lags. Our model achieved superior accuracy over conventional artificial neural network models: with a prediction window of 500ms, the LSTM model achieved an average relative Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.037, an average Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.048, and a Maximum Error (ME) of 1.687 in the internal validity data, and an average relative MAE of 0.112, an average RMSE of 0.139 and an ME of 1.811 in the external validity data. Compared to the LSTM model trained with default hyper-parameters, the MAE of the optimized model results decreased by 20%, indicating the importance of tuning the hyper-parameters of LSTM models to obtain superior accuracy. This study demonstrates the potential of deep LSTM models for the respiratory signal prediction and illustrates the impacts of major hyper-parameters in LSTM models.

Bloch oscillations of spin-orbit-coupled cold atoms in an optical lattice and spin current generation

We study the Bloch oscillation dynamics of a spin-orbit-coupled cold atomic gas trapped inside a one-dimensioanl optical lattice. The eigenspectra of the system is identified as two interpenetrating Wannier-Stark ladder. Based on that, we carefully analyzed the Bloch oscillation dynamics and found out that intraladder coupling between neighboring rungs of Wannier-Stark ladder give rise to ordinary Bloch oscillation while interladder coupling lead to small amplitude high frequency oscillation superimposed on it. Specifically spin-orbit interaction breaks Galilean invariance, which can be reflected by out-of-phase oscillation of the two spin components in the accelerated frame. The possibility of generating spin current in this system are also explored.

Context-Aware Deep Spatio-Temporal Network for Hand Pose Estimation from Depth Images

As a fundamental and challenging problem in computer vision, hand pose estimation aims to estimate the hand joint locations from depth images. Typically, the problem is modeled as learning a mapping function from images to hand joint coordinates in a data-driven manner. In this paper, we propose Context-Aware Deep Spatio-Temporal Network (CADSTN), a novel method to jointly model the spatio-temporal properties for hand pose estimation. Our proposed network is able to learn the representations of the spatial information and the temporal structure from the image sequences. Moreover, by adopting adaptive fusion method, the model is capable of dynamically weighting different predictions to lay emphasis on sufficient context. Our method is examined on two common benchmarks, the experimental results demonstrate that our proposed approach achieves the best or the second-best performance with state-of-the-art methods and runs in 60fps.

Two ultra-stable novel allotropes of Tellurium few-layers

At least four two- or quasi-one- dimensional allotropes and a mixture of them were theoretically predicted or experimentally observed for low-dimensional Te, namely the α, \b{eta}, γ, δ and chiral-α+δ phases. Among them the γ and α phases were found the most stable phases for monolayer and thicker layers, respectively. Here, we found two novel low-dimensional phases, namely the ε and ζ phases. The ζ phase is over 29 meV/Te more stable than and the ε phase shows comparable stability with the most stable monolayer γ phase. The energetic difference between the ζ and α phases reduces with respect to the increased layer thickness and vanishes at the four-layer (12-sublayer) thickness, while this thickness increases under change doping. Both ε and ζ phases are metallic chains and layers, respectively. The ζ phase, with very strong interlayer coupling, shows quantum well states in its layer-dependent bandstructures. These results provide significantly insight into the understanding of polytypism in Te few-layers and may boost tremendous studies on properties of various few-layer phases.

Charge tunable structural phase transitions in few-layer tellurium: a step toward building mono-elemental devices

Recently, a covalent-like quasi-bonding was unveiled for the inter-chain interaction in a promising semiconductor, few-layer Tellurium. Such quasi-bond offers comparable bond lengths and strengths with those of a typical Te-Te covalent bond, which may lead to much easier transformations between the quasi-bonds and the covalent bonds. Here, we show a few structural phase-transitions among four Te allotropes in few-layer Te under charge doping. In particular, the semiconducting α-phase can transform into a smaller-bandgap β-phase, even-smaller-bandgap γ-phase and then metallic δ-phase in a Te bilayer. In a tri-layer, a metallic chiral α+δ phase is more stable under initial electron doping, leading to the appearance of chirality. Variations of electronic structures aside, these transitions are accompanied by the emergence or elimination of inversion centers (α-β, α-γ, α-α+δ), structural anisotropy (α-γ, γ-δ) and chirality (α-α+δ), which could result in substantial changes in optical and other properties. In light of this, this work opens the possibility toward building mono-elemental electronic and optoelectronic heterostructures or devices. It also offers a platform for studying relations between charge doping and electric/optical properties.

Layer- and doping-tunable long range ferromagnetic order-ing in two-dimensional CrS2

Interlayer coupling is of vital importance for manipulating physical properties, e.g. electronic bandgap, in two-dimensional materials. However, tuning magnetic proper-ties in these materials is yet to be addressed. Here, we found a striped antiferromag-netic (sAFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) transition undergoing from monolayer to bilayer and thicker CrS2. This transition is attributed to charge sharing of interlayer S atoms and its resulting charge transfer from Cr d eg to t2g orbitals. The transferred charge reduces a portion of Cr4+ to Cr3+, which enhances the double-exchange mechanism favoring FM rather than sAFM ordering. Doping of electrons shares the same effect with stacking induced charge sharing. Therefore, charge doping could either manip-ulate the magnetic ordering between sAFM and FM or tune CrS2 between p- and n-doped magnetic semiconductors. We also proposed several prototype devices ena-bling to use external electric field for manipulating magnetic orderings of CrS2 layers. These results manifest the role of interlayer coupling in modifying magnetic proper-ties of layered materials

New Experimental Limits on Exotic Spin-Spin-Velocity-Dependent Interactions By Using SmCo$_5$ Spin Sources

We report the latest results of searching for possible new macro-scale spin-spin-velocity-dependent forces (SSVDFs) based on specially designed iron-shielded SmCo$_5$ (ISSC) spin sources and a spin exchange relaxation free (SERF) co-magnetometer. The ISSCs have high net electron spin densities of about $1.7\times 10^{21}$ cm$^{-3}$, which mean high detecting sensitivity; and low magnetic field leakage of about $\sim$mG level due to iron shielding, which means low detecting noise. With help from the ISSCs, the high sensitivity SERF co-magnetometer, and the similarity analysis method, new constraints on SSVDFs with forms of $V_{6+7}$, $V_8$, $V_{15}$, and $V_{16}$ have been obtained, which represent the tightest limits in force range of 5 cm -- 1 km to the best of our knowledge.

Few-layer Tellurium: one-dimensional-like layered elementary semiconductor with striking physical properties

Few-layer Tellurium, an elementary semiconductor, succeeds most of striking physical properties that black phosphorus (BP) offers and could be feasibly synthesized by simple solution-based methods. It is comprised of non-covalently bound parallel Te chains, among which covalent-like feature appears. This feature is, we believe, another demonstration of the previously found covalent-like quasi-bonding (CLQB) where wavefunction hybridization does occur. The strength of this inter-chain CLQB is comparable with that of intra-chain covalent bonding, leading to closed stability of several Te allotropes. It also introduces a tunable bandgap varying from nearly direct 0.31 eV (bulk) to indirect 1.17 eV (2L) and four (two) complex, highly anisotropic and layer-dependent hole (electron) pockets in the first Brillouin zone. It also exhibits an extraordinarily high hole mobility (~10$^5$ cm$^2$/Vs) and strong optical absorption along the non-covalently bound direction, nearly isotropic and layer-dependent optical properties, large ideal strength over 20%, better environmental stability than BP and unusual crossover of force constants for interlayer shear and breathing modes. All these results manifest that the few-layer Te is an extraordinary-high-mobility, high optical absorption, intrinsic-anisotropy, low-cost-fabrication, tunable bandgap, better environmental stability and nearly direct bandgap semiconductor. This "one-dimension-like" few-layer Te, together with other geometrically similar layered materials, may promote the emergence of a new family of layered materials.

Inversion Domain Boundary Induced Stacking and Bandstructure Diversity in Bilayer MoSe2

Interlayer rotation and stacking were recently demonstrated as effective strategies for tuning physical properties of various two-dimensional materials. The latter strategy was mostly realized in hetero-structures with continuously varied stacking orders, which obscure the revelation of the intrinsic role of a certain stacking order in its physical properties. Here, we introduce inversion-domain-boundaries into molecular-beam-epitaxy grown MoSe2 homo-bilayers, which induce unusual-fractional lattice translations to their surrounding domains, accounting for the observed diversity of large-area and uniform stacking sequences. Unusual low-symmetric stacking orders were observed using transmission electron microscopy and detailed geometries were identified by density functional theory. A linear relation was also revealed between interlayer distance and stacking energy. These stacking sequences yield various energy alignments between the valence states at Γ and K, showing stacking dependent bandgaps and valence band tail states in the measured scanning tunneling spectroscopy. These results may benefit the design of two-dimensional multilayers with manipulable stacking orders.

Deriving phosphorus atomic chain from few-layer black phosphorus

Phosphorus atomic chains, the utmost-narrow nanostructures of black phosphorus (BP), are highly relevant to the in-depth development of BP into one-dimensional (1D) regime. In this contribution, we report a top-down route to prepare atomic chains of BP via electron beam sculpting inside a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The growth and dynamics (i.e. rupture and edge migration) of 1D phosphorus chains are experimentally captured for the first time. Furthermore, the dynamic behaviors and associated energetics of the as-formed phosphorus chains are further corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The 1D counterpart of BP will serve as a novel platform and inspire further exploration of the versatile properties of BP.

Searching for New Spin-Dependent Interactions with SmCo$_5$ Spin Sources and a SERF Comagnetometer

We propose a novel method to search for possible new macro-scale spin- and/or velocity-dependent forces (SVDFs) based on specially designed SmCo$_5$ spin sources and a spin exchange relaxation-free (SERF) comagnetometer. A simulation shows that, by covering a SmCo$_5$ permanent magnet with a layer of pure iron, a high net spin density source of about $1\times 10^{22}$/cm$^3$ could be obtained. Taking advantages of the high spin density of this iron-shielded SmCo$_5$ and the high sensitivity of the SERF, the proposed method could set up new limits of greater than 10 orders of magnitude more sensitive than those from previous experiments or proposals in exploring SVDFs in force ranges larger than 1 cm.

Degradation of Black Phosphorus (BP): The Role of Oxygen and Water

Black phosphorus (BP) has attracted significant interest as a monolayer or few-layer material with extraordinary electrical and optoelectronic properties. However, degradation in air and other environments is an unresolved issue that may limit future applications. In particular the role of different ambient species has remained controversial. Here, we report systematic experiments combined with ab-initio calculations that address the effects of oxygen and water in the degradation of BP. Our results show that BP rapidly degrades whenever oxygen is present, but is unaffected by deaerated (i.e., O2 depleted) water. This behavior is rationalized by oxidation involving a facile dissociative chemisorption of O2, whereas H2O molecules are weakly physisorbed and do not dissociate on the BP surface. Oxidation (by O2) turns the hydrophobic pristine BP surface progressively hydrophilic. Our results have implications on the development of encapsulation strategies for BP, and open new avenues for exploration of phenomena in aqueous solutions including solution-gating, electrochemistry, and solution-phase approaches for exfoliation, dispersion, and delivery of BP.

Carbon stars from LAMOST DR2 data

In this work, we present the new catalog of carbon stars from the LAMOST DR2 catalog. In total, 894 carbon stars are identified from multiple line indices measured from the stellar spectra. Combining the CN bands in the red end with \ctwo\ and other lines, we are able to identify the carbon stars. Moreover, we also classify the carbon stars into spectral sub-types of \ch, \CR, and \cn. These sub-types approximately show distinct features in the multi-dimensional line indices, implying that in the future we can use them to identify carbon stars from larger spectroscopic datasets. Meanwhile, from the line indices space, while the \cn\ stars are clearly separated from the others, we find no clear separation between \CR\ and \ch\ sub-types. The \CR\ and \ch\ stars seem to smoothly transition from one to another. This may hint that the \CR\ and \ch\ stars may not be different in their origins but look different in their spectra because of different metallicity. Due to the relatively low spectral resolution and lower signal-to-noise ratio, the ratio of $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C is not measured and thus the \cj\ stars are not identified.

Coupled orbital angular momentum conversions in a quasi-periodically poled LiTaO3 crystal

We experimentally demonstrate the orbital angular momentum (OAM) conversion by the coupled nonlinear optical processes in a quasi-periodically poled LiTaO3 crystal. In such crystal, third-harmonic generation (THG) is realized by the coupled second-harmonic generation (SHG) and sum-frequency generation (SFG) processes, i.e., SHG is dependent on SFG and vice versa. The OAMs of the interacting waves are proved to be conserved in such coupled nonlinear optical processes. As increasing the input OAM in the experiment, the conversion efficiency decreases because of the reduced fundamental power intensity. Our results provide better understanding for the OAM conversions, which can be used to efficiently produce an optical OAM state at a short wavelength.
