QoE-Oriented Resource Allocation for 360-degree Video Transmission over Heterogeneous Networks

Immersive media streaming, especially virtual reality (VR)/360-degree video streaming which is very bandwidth demanding, has become more and more popular due to the rapid growth of the multimedia and networking deployments. To better explore the usage of resource and achieve better quality of experience (QoE) perceived by users, this paper develops an application-layer scheme to jointly exploit the available bandwidth from the LTE and Wi-Fi networks in 360-degree video streaming. This newly proposed scheme and the corresponding solution algorithms utilize the saliency of video, prediction of users' view and the status information of users to obtain an optimal association of the users with different Wi-Fi access points (APs) for maximizing the system's utility. Besides, a novel buffer strategy is proposed to mitigate the influence of short-time prediction problem for transmitting 360-degree videos in time-varying networks. The promising performance and low complexity of the proposed scheme and algorithms are validated in simulations with various 360-degree videos.

Observation of unusual optical band structure of CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite single crystal

Extensive efforts have been undertaken on the photoelectric physics of hybrid organolead halide perovskites to unveil the reason for the attractive photovoltaic performance. Yet, the resulting evidences are far from being fully conclusive. Herein, we provide another direct support for this issue. In addition to the observation on the conventional band edge at 1.58 eV that presents a blueshift toward temperature increase, interestingly, we also observe an unusual optical band edge at 1.48 eV in CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite single crystals. Contrary to the conventional band edge, this one shows an obvious redshift toward the enhancement in temperature, in agreement with the Varshni relation. More interestingly, the unusual band edge exhibits a series of obvious absorption and photocurrent signals, but the according photoluminescence signals are not observable. This indicates that this band edge is particularly beneficial for the photovoltaic effect due to the inhibited radiative recombination. The kinetics on photo-involved charge transition and transfer are investigated using the pump-probe photoconductivity technique, and a changeable band structure model was proposed.

Adiabatic control of surface plasmon-polaritons in a 3-layers graphene curved configuration

In this paper, we utilize coupled mode theory (CMT) to model the coupling between surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) between multiple graphene sheets. By using the Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP) Quantum Control Technique, we propose a novel directional coupler based on SPPs evolution in three layers of graphene sheets in some curved configuration. Our calculated results show that the SPP can be transferred efficiently from the input graphene sheet to the output graphene sheet, and the coupling is also robust that it is not sensitive to the length of the device.

Shortcut to adiabatic light transfer in waveguide couplers with a sign flip in the phase mismatch

Employing counterdiabatic shortcut to adiabaticity (STA), we design shorter and robust achromatic two- and three- waveguide couplers. We assume that the phase mismatch between the waveguides has a sign flip at maximum coupling, while the coupling between the waveguides has a smooth spatial shape. We show that the presented coupler operates as a complete achromatic optical switch for two coupled waveguides and as an equal superposition beam splitter for three coupled waveguides. An important feature of our devices is that they do not require larger coupling strength as compared to previous designs, which make them easier to realize in an experimental setting. Additionally, we show that the presented waveguide couplers operate at a shorter device length and are robust against variations in the coupling strength and the phase mismatch.

Unity 2.0: Secure and Durable Personal Cloud Storage

While personal cloud storage services such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive and iCloud have become very popular in recent years, these services offer few security guarantees to users. These cloud services are aimed at end users, whose applications often assume a local file system storage, and thus require strongly consistent data. In addition, users usually access these services using personal computers and portable devices such as phones and tablets, which are upload bandwidth constrained and in many cases battery powered. Unity is a system that provides confidentiality, integrity, durability and strong consistency while minimizing the upload bandwidth of its clients. We find that Unity consumes minimal upload bandwidth for compute-heavy workload compared to NFS and Dropbox, while uses similar amount of upload bandwidth for write-heavy workload relative to NBD. Although read-heavy workload tends to consume more upload bandwidth with Unity, it is no more than an eighth of the size of blocks replicated and there is much room for optimization. Moreover, Unity provides flexibility to maintain multiple DEs to provide scalability for multiple devices to concurrently access the data with the minimal lease switch cost.

3D Nanoporous Gold with Very Low Parting Limit Derived from Au-based Metallic Glass and Enhanced Methanol Electro-oxidation Catalytic Performance

Nanoporous gold (NPG) with bi-continuous ligaments and pores structure has promising potential in functional applications, among which one prominent example is fuel cell electrocatalyst. However, current application of NPG is mostly limited to methanol electro-oxidation due to its weak catalytic performance. Here we report a simple chemical dealloying process, for generating peculiar three-dimensional (3D) free-standing NPG with high specific surface area associated with a novel porous cone shaped protrusion morphology. This NPG structure possesses the highest specific activity of catalytic performance reported NPG catalysts so far.

Critical percolation clusters in seven dimensions and on a complete graph

We study critical bond percolation on a seven-dimensional (7D) hypercubic lattice with periodic boundary conditions and on the complete graph (CG) of finite volume $V$. We numerically confirm that for both cases, the critical number density $n(s,V)$ of clusters of size $s$ obeys a scaling form $n(s,V) \sim s^{-τ} \tilde{n} (s/V^{d^*_{\rm f}})$ with identical volume fractal dimension $d^*_{\rm f}=2/3$ and exponent $τ= 1+1/d^*_{\rm f}=5/2$. We then classify occupied bonds into {\em bridge} bonds, which includes {\em branch} and {\em junction} bonds, and {\em non-bridge} bonds; a bridge bond is a branch bond if and only if its deletion produces at least one tree. Deleting branch bonds from percolation configurations produces {\em leaf-free} configurations, whereas, deleting all bridge bonds leads to {\em bridge-free} configurations. It is shown that the fraction of non-bridge (bi-connected) bonds vanishes $ρ_{\rm n, CG}$$\rightarrow$0 for large CGs, but converges to a finite value $ ρ_{\rm n, 7D} =0.006 \, 193 \, 1(7)$ for the 7D hypercube. Further, we observe that while the bridge-free dimension $d^*_{\rm bf}=1/3$ holds for both the CG and 7D cases, the volume fractal dimensions of the leaf-free clusters are different: $d^*_{\rm \ell f, 7D} = 0.669 (9) \approx 2/3$ and $d^*_{\rm \ell f, CG} = 0. 333 7 (17) \approx 1/3$. We also study the behavior of the number and the size distribution of leaf-free and bridge-free clusters. For the number of clusters, we numerically find the number of leaf-free and bridge-free clusters on the CG scale as $\sim \ln V$, while for 7D they scale as $\sim V$. Our work demonstrates that the geometric structure of high-dimensional percolation clusters cannot be fully accounted for by their complete-graph counterparts.

Filtering Signal Processes in Molecular Multimedia Memristors

To obtain precisely controllable, robust as well as reproduceable memristor for efficient neuromorphic computing still very challenging. Molecular tailoring aims at obtaining the much more flexibly tuning plasticity has recently generated significant interest as new paradigms toward the realization of novel memristor-based synapses. Herein, inspired by the deliberate oxygen transport carried by the hemoglobin in our blood circulation, we report a novel molecular-regulated electronic/ionic semiconducting (MEIS) platform ITO/MTPP/Al2O3-x/Al with a series of metallophorphyrins (MTPPs) to delicately regulate the ionic migration for robust molecular multimedia memristors. The stable pinched hysteresis resulted from the coordination-regulated ionic migration was verified by different device structures, operation modes, as well as the characterizations of scanning transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM-EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Metal coordination-dependent device parameters such as potential and depression as well as retention curves further support the correlation between the coordination and stimulating flux-dependent memristive behaviors. In the 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphyrin zinc(II) (ZnTPP) synapse, we implement versatile emulations, mainly including transition from short-term memory (STM) to long-term-memory (LTM), learning experience and activity-dependent learning-memory process in integrated neuromorphic configurations based on the biological Hebbian rules, and develop the fresh Spike-Amplitude-Dependent-Plasticity (SADP) with the applications of signal filtering and habituation and sensitization which are beyond the prevalent Hebbian rules.

Enhanced circular photogalvanic effect in HgTe quantum wells in the heavily inverted regime

Thanks to the strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI), HgTe-based quantum wells (QWs) exhibit very rich spin-related properties. But the full descriptions of them are beyond the simple parabolic band models and conventional Rashba and Dresselhaus SOI terms, as a result of the strong interband coupling of the narrow gap band structures. Here, we develop a theoretical method to calculate the circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) in Hg$_{0.3}$Cd$_{0.7}$Te/HgTe/Hg$_{0.3}$Cd$_{0.7}$Te quantum wells (HgTe QWs) based on the realistic eight-band $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ model with density matrix formalism. Our method could take account of the unusual band structures and SOIs of HgTe QWs, therefore can be used to calculate the CPGE currents in HgTe QWs with non-parabolic, Dirac-like and inverted energy dispersions. The microscopic origin of CPGE and the interplay effect of structure inversion asymmetry (SIA) and bulk inversion asymmetry (BIA) is also investigated. In addition, this method is extended to study the pure spin currents (PSCs) in HgTe QWs injected by linearly polarized light at normal incidence. Our calculation results support the following findings: (i) In the inverted phase regime, the energy dispersion of heavily inverted HgTe QWs could be strongly distorted, lead to a significant enhancement of CPGE at a certain range of energy spectrum. (ii) The interplay of SIA and BIA could lead to the CPGE currents anisotropically dependent on the azimuth angle of oblique incident light. (iii) The PSC $j_{y'}^{x'}$ ($x'\parallel[110]$ and $y'\parallel[\bar{1}10]$) produced by [110]-linearly-polarized light could change sign with HgTe QW transformed from normal phase to inverted phase. These findings might be utilized in developing the HgTe-based infrared/terahertz optoelectronic and spintronic devices.

Breaking through the bandwidth barrier in distributed fiber vibration sensing by sub-Nyquist randomized sampling

The round trip time of the light pulse limits the maximum detectable frequency response range of vibration in phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (ϕ-OTDR). We propose a method to break the frequency response range restriction of ϕ-OTDR system by modulating the light pulse interval randomly which enables a random sampling for every vibration point in a long sensing fiber. This sub-Nyquist randomized sampling method is suits for detecting sparse-wideband-frequency vibration signals. Up to MHz resonance vibration signal with over dozens of frequency components and 1.153MHz single frequency vibration signal are clearly identified for a sensing range of 9.6km with 10kHz maximum sampling rate.

Spin-orbit coupled two-electron Fermi gases of ytterbium atoms

We demonstrate all-optical implementation of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in a two-electron Fermi gas of $^{173}$Yb atoms by coupling two hyperfine ground states with a narrow optical transition. Due to the SU($N$) symmetry of the $^1$S$_0$ ground-state manifold which is insensitive to external magnetic fields, an optical AC Stark effect is applied to split the ground spin states, which exhibits a high stability compared with experiments on alkali and lanthanide atoms, and separate out an effective spin-1/2 subspace from other hyperfine levels for the realization of SOC. The dephasing spin dynamics when a momentum-dependent spin-orbit gap being suddenly opened and the asymmetric momentum distribution of the spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas are observed as a hallmark of SOC. The realization of all-optical SOC for ytterbium fermions should offer a new route to a long-lived spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas and greatly expand our capability in studying novel spin-orbit physics with alkaline-earth-like atoms.

Detecting topological exceptional points in a parity-time symmetric system with cold atoms

We reveal a novel topological property of the exceptional points in a two-level parity-time symmetric system and then propose a scheme to detect the topological exceptional points in the system, which is embedded in a larger Hilbert space constructed by a four-level cold atomic system. We show that a tunable parameter in the presented system for simulating the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian can be tuned to swept the eigenstates through the exceptional points in parameter space. The non-trivial Berry phases of the eigenstates obtained in this loop from the exceptional points can be measured by the atomic interferometry. Since the proposed operations and detection are experimentally feasible, our scheme may pave a promising way to explore the novel properties of non-Hermitian systems.

Modulated Pulses Based High Spatial Resolution Distributed Fiber System for Multi-Parameter Sensing

We demonstrate a hybrid distributed fiber sensing system for multi-parameter detection. The integration of phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and Brillouin optical time domain reflectometry (B-OTDR) enables measurement of vibration, temperature and strain. Exploiting the fast changing property of vibration and the static property of temperature and strain, the laser pulse width and intensity are modulated and then injected into the single-mode sensing fiber proportionally, so that the three concerned parameters can be extracted simultaneously by only one photo-detector and data acquisition channel. Combining with advanced data processing methods, the modulation of laser pulse brings additional advantages because of trade and balance between the backscattering light power and nonlinear effect noise, which enhances the signal-to-noise ratio, and enables sub-meter level spatial resolution together with long sensing distance. The proposed method realizes up to 4.8 kHz vibration sensing with 3 m spatial resolution at 10 km standard single-mode fiber. And measurements of the distributed temperature and stress profile along the same fiber with 80 cm spatial resolution are also achieved concurrently.

502 Gbits/s Quantum Random Number Generation with Simple and Compact Structure

We propose and implement a simple and compact quantum random number generation (QRNG) scheme based on the quantum phase fluctuations of a DFB laser. The distribution probability of the experimentally measured data fits well with the simulation result, got from the theoretical model we established. Min-entropy estimation and Toeplitz-hashing randomness extractor are used to obtain the final random bit. The proposed approach has advantages not only in simple structure but also in high random bit generation rate. As a result, 502 Gbits/s random bits generation speed can be obtained, which is much higher than previous similar schemes. This approach offers a possibility to promote the practical application of QRNG.

Experimental realization of stimulated Raman shortcut-to-adiabatic passage with cold atoms

Accurate control of a quantum system is a fundamental requirement in many areas of modern science ranging from quantum information processing to high-precision measurements. A significantly important goal in quantum control is to prepare a desired state as fast as possible with sufficiently high fidelity allowed by available resources and experimental constraints. Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) is a robust way to realize high-fidelity state transfer but it requires a sufficiently long operation time to satisfy the adiabatic criteria. We here theoretically propose and then experimentally demonstrate a shortcut-to-adiabatic protocol to speed up the STIRAP. By modifying the shapes of the Raman pulses, we experimentally realize a fast and high-fidelity stimulated Raman shortcut-to-adiabatic passage that is robust against control parameter variations. The all-optical, robust, and fast protocol demonstrated here provides an efficient and practical way to control quantum systems.

Proposal for implementing universal superadiabatic geometric quantum gates in nitrogen-vacancy centers

We propose a feasible scheme to implement a universal set of quantum gates based on geometric phases and superadiabatic quantum control. Consolidating the advantages of both strategies, the proposed quantum gates are robust and fast. The diamond nitrogen-vacancy center system is adopted as a typical example to illustrate the scheme. We show that these gates can be realized in a simple two-level configuration by appropriately controlling the amplitude, phase, and frequency of just one microwave field. The gate's robust and fast features are confirmed by comparing the fidelity of the proposed superadiabatic geometric phase (controlled-PHASE) gate with those of two other kinds of phase (controlled-PHASE) gates.

Experimental evidence of optical analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency in graphene

We demonstrate the first experimental observation of coherent population oscillation, an optical analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency, in graphene based on phase sensitive pump-probe system. Degenerate four-wave-mixing between pump and probe modifies the dispersion and absorption of the population oscillation process in graphene, and leads to enhance and depression of modulation instability with asymmetry in frequency. The analytically predicted asymmetrical burning hole fully consists with the experiments.

Coherence loss of partially mode-locked fiber laser

Stochastically driven nonlinear processes limit the number of amplified modes in a natural system due to competitive mode interaction, which is accompanied by loss of coherence when increasing the complexity of system. Specifically, we find that modulation instability, which exhibits great fluctuations when it is spontaneously grown from noise in conservative systems, may possess a high degree of coherence in dissipative laser system with gain. Nonlinear mode interactions can be competitive or cooperative: adjusting the intracavity polarization state controls the process of loss of coherence. Single-shot spectra reveal that fiber laser redistributes its energy from center wavelength mode to sidebands through parametric instabilities, and subsequently longitudinal modes are populated via cascaded four-wave-mixing. Parametric frequency conversion populates longitudinal modes with a random distribution of position, intensity and polarization, resulting in partially (rather than highly) coherent pulses. These dynamics unveil a new route towards complex pattern formation in nonlinear laser systems.
