SoK: Hardware Security Support for Trustworthy Execution

In recent years, there have emerged many new hardware mechanisms for improving the security of our computer systems. Hardware offers many advantages over pure software approaches: immutability of mechanisms to software attacks, better execution and power efficiency and a smaller interface allowing it to better maintain secrets. This has given birth to a plethora of hardware mechanisms providing trusted execution environments (TEEs), support for integrity checking and memory safety and widespread uses of hardware roots of trust. In this paper, we systematize these approaches through the lens of abstraction. Abstraction is key to computing systems, and the interface between hardware and software contains many abstractions. We find that these abstractions, when poorly designed, can both obscure information that is needed for security enforcement, as well as reveal information that needs to be kept secret, leading to vulnerabilities. We summarize such vulnerabilities and discuss several research trends of this area.

Multiobjective Optimization Differential Evolution Enhanced with Principle Component Analysis for Constrained Optimization

Multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) have been successfully applied to a number of constrained optimization problems. Many of them adopt mutation and crossover operators from differential evolution. However, these operators do not explicitly utilise features of fitness landscapes. To improve the performance of algorithms, this paper aims at designing a search operator adapting to fitness landscapes. Through an observation, we find that principle component analysis (PCA) can be used to characterise fitness landscapes. Based on this finding, a new search operator, called PCA-projection, is proposed. In order to verify the effectiveness of PCA-projection, we design two algorithms enhanced with PCA-projection for solving constrained optimization problems, called PMODE and HECO-PDE, respectively. Experiments have been conducted on the IEEE CEC 2017 competition benchmark suite in constrained optimisation. PMODE and HECO-PDE are compared with the algorithms from the IEEE CEC 2018 competition and another recent MOEA for constrained optimisation. Experimental results show that an algorithm enhanced with PCA-projection performs better than its corresponding opponent without this operator. Furthermore, HECO-PDE is ranked first on all dimensions according to the competition rules. This study reveals that decomposition-based MOEAs, such as HECO-PDE, are competitive with best single-objective and multiobjective evolutionary algorithms for constrained optimisation, but MOEAs based on non-dominance, such as PMODE, may not.

Device-Independent Quantum Private Query Protocol without the Assumption of Perfect Detectors

The first device-independent quantum private query protocol (MRT17) which is proposed by Maitra \emph{et al.} [Phys. Rev. A 95, 042344 (2017)] to enhance the security through the certification of the states and measurements. However, the MRT17 protocol works under an assumption of perfect detectors, which increases difficulty in the implementations. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate what would affect the security of this protocol if the detectors were imperfect. Meanwhile, Maitra \emph{et al.} also pointed out that this problem remains open. In this paper, we analyze the security of MRT17 protocol when the detectors are imperfect and then find that this protocol is under attack in the aforementioned case. Furthermore, we propose device-independent QPQ protocol without the assumption of perfect detectors. Compared with MRT17 protocol, our protocol is more practical without relaxing the security in the device-independent framework.

testRNN: Coverage-guided Testing on Recurrent Neural Networks

Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) have been widely applied to various sequential tasks such as text processing, video recognition, and molecular property prediction. We introduce the first coverage-guided testing tool, coined testRNN, for the verification and validation of a major class of RNNs, long short-term memory networks (LSTMs). The tool implements a generic mutation-based test case generation method, and it empirically evaluates the robustness of a network using three novel LSTM structural test coverage metrics. Moreover, it is able to help the model designer go through the internal data flow processing of the LSTM layer. The tool is available through: https://github.com/TrustAI/testRNN under the BSD 3-Clause licence.

High Speed Continuous Variable Source-Independent Quantum Random Number Generation

As a fundamental phenomenon in nature, randomness has a wide range of applications in the fields of science and engineering. Among different types of random number generators (RNG), quantum random number generator (QRNG) is a kind of promising RNG as it can provide provable true random numbers based on the inherent randomness of fundamental quantum processes. Nevertheless, the randomness from a QRNG can be diminished (or even destroyed) if the devices (especially the entropy source devices) are not perfect or ill-characterized. To eliminate the practical security loopholes from the source, source-independent QRNGs, which allow the source to have arbitrary and unknown dimensions, have been introduced and become one of the most important semi-device-independent QRNGs. Herein a method that enables ultra-fast unpredictable quantum random number generation from quadrature fluctuations of quantum optical field without any assumptions on the input states is proposed. Particularly, to estimate a lower bound on the extractable randomness that is independent from side information held by an eavesdropper, a new security analysis framework is established based on the extremality of Gaussian states, which can be easily extended to design and analyze new semi-device-independent continuous variable QRNG protocols. Moreover, the practical imperfections of the QRNG including the effects of excess noise, finite sampling range, finite resolution and asymmetric conjugate quadratures are taken into account and quantitatively analyzed. Finally, the proposed method is experimentally demonstrated to obtain high secure random number generation rates of 15.07 Gbits/s in off-line configuration and can potentially achieve 6 Gbits/s by real-time post-processing.

Isomorphism in Wavelets

Two scaling functions $φ_A$ and $φ_B$ for Parseval frame wavelets are algebraically isomorphic, $φ_A \simeq φ_B$, if they have matching solutions to their (reduced) isomorphic systems of equations. Let $A$ and $B$ be $d\times d$ and $s\times s$ \thematrix matrices with $d, s\geq 1$ respectively and let $φ_A$ be a scaling function associated with matrix $A$ and generated by a finite solution. There always exists a scaling function $φ_B$ associated with matrix $B$ such that \begin{equation*} φ_B \simeq φ_A. \end{equation*} An example shows that the assumption on the finiteness of the solutions can not be removed.

A new coupling mechanism between two graphene electron waveguides for ultrafast switching

We propose a novel ultrafast electronic switching device based on dual-graphene electron waveguides, in analogy to the optical dual-channel waveguide device. The design utilizes the principle of coherent quantum mechanical tunneling of Rabi oscillations between the two graphene electron waveguides. Based on a modified coupled mode theory, we construct a theoretical model to analyse the device characteristics, and predict that the swtiching speed is faster than 1 ps. Due to the long mean free path of electrons in graphene at room temperature, the proposed design avoids the limitation of low temperature operation required in the normal semiconductor quantum-well structure. The layout of the our design is similar to that of a standard CMOS transistor that should be readily fabricated with current state-of-art nanotechnology.

Complete achromatic and robustness electro-optic switch between two integrated optical waveguides

In this paper, we present a novel design of electro-optic modulator and optical switching device, based on current integrated optics technique. The advantages of our optical switching device are broadband of input light wavelength, robustness against varying device length and operation voltages, with reference to previous design. Conforming to our results of previous paper [Huang et al, phys. lett. a, 90, 053837], the coupling of the waveguides has a hyperbolic-secant shape. while detuning has a sign flip at maximum coupling, we called it as with a sign flip of phase mismatch model. The a sign flip of phase mismatch model can produce complete robust population transfer. In this paper, we enhance this device to switch light intensity controllable, by tuning external electric field based on electro-optic effect.

Coherent population transfer via state-independent quasi-adiabatic dynamics

High-fidelity and robust coherent population transfer is a major challenge in coherent quantum control. Different from the well known adiabatic condition, we present a rigorous adiabatic condition that is inspired by the idea of the Landau-Zener tunneling. Based on this, we propose a coherent population transfer approach, which just needs only one control parameter and depends on the eigenvalues of the systems. Compared to other approaches, such as fast quasiadiabatic dynamics, shortcut to adiabatic passage, we numerically demonstrate that our approach can provide a more high-fidelity and more robustness coherent population transfer without affecting the speed. In short, our approach opens a new way to further increase the fidelity and the robustness of coherent population transfer. Moreover, it may be generalized to complex quantum systems where the exact expressions of eigenstates are difficult to obtain or the paremeters of systems are difficult to simultaneously drive.

Attributes-aided Part Detection and Refinement for Person Re-identification

Person attributes are often exploited as mid-level human semantic information to help promote the performance of person re-identification task. In this paper, unlike most existing methods simply taking attribute learning as a classification problem, we perform it in a different way with the motivation that attributes are related to specific local regions, which refers to the perceptual ability of attributes. We utilize the process of attribute detection to generate corresponding attribute-part detectors, whose invariance to many influences like poses and camera views can be guaranteed. With detected local part regions, our model extracts local features to handle the body part misalignment problem, which is another major challenge for person re-identification. The local descriptors are further refined by fused attribute information to eliminate interferences caused by detection deviation. Extensive experiments on two popular benchmarks with attribute annotations demonstrate the effectiveness of our model and competitive performance compared with state-of-the-art algorithms.

Influences of spin-orbit coupling on Fermi surfaces and Dirac cones in ferroelectric-like polar metals

Based on first-principles calculations and k .p effective models, we report physical properties of ferroelectric-like hexagonal polar metals with P63mc symmetry, which are distinct from those of conventional metals with spatial inversion symmetry. Spin textures exist on the Fermi surface of polar metals (e.g. ternary LiGaGe and elemental polar metal of Bi) and spin-momentum locking exist on accidental Dirac cones on the sixfold rotational axis, due to the spin-orbit coupling and lack of inversion symmetry in polar space group. This effect has potential applications in spin-orbitronics. Dirac points are also predicted in LiGaGe.

Coherent optical modulation of partially mode-locked fiber laser based on coherent population oscillation in reduced oxide graphene

Optical control of graphene-based photonic devices and systems has been under extensive explorations, nevertheless, the requirement of high power pump laser due to incoherent modulation makes those schemes low efficient. Here, we demonstrate coherent manipulation of the operating states of partially mode-locked fiber laser based on coherent population oscillation in reduced graphene oxide for the first time. We couple a much weaker continuous wave laser into the resonator operating with parametric instability state, and observe significant depression/enhancement of the sidebands when the coherent population oscillation conditions are satisfied. Besides, significant depression of partially mode-locked fiber laser is achieved. The experimental results reveal that the coherent population oscillation in reduced graphene oxide is highly effective in manipulating mode-locked fiber laser system, and the induced phase variation is highly asymmetrical. The discovery of coherent population oscillation in reduced graphene oxide facilitates coherent optical modulation of reduced graphene oxide-based photonic devices and systems with a much weaker controlling laser.

Adiabatic following of terahertz surface plasmon-polaritons based on tri-layered corrugated thin film coupler

In this paper, we utilize coupled mode theory (CMT) to model the coupling of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) between tri-layered corrugated thin films (CTF) structure coupler in the terahertz region. Employing the stimulated raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) quantum control technique, we propose a novel directional coupler based on SPPs evolution in tri-layered CTF in some curved configuration. Our calculated results show that the SPPs can be completely transferred from the input to the output CTF waveguides, and even we consider SPPs propagation loss, the transfer rate is still above 70%. The performance of our coupler is also robust that it is not sensitive to the geometry of device and wavelength of SPPs. As a result, our device can tolerate defect induced by fabrication and manipulate THz wave at broadband.

Band Structure Engineering of Interfacial Semiconductors Based on Atomically Thin Lead Iodide Crystals

To explore new constituents in two-dimensional materials and to combine their best in van der Waals heterostructures, are in great demand as being unique platform to discover new physical phenomena and to design novel functionalities in interface-based devices. Herein, PbI2 crystals as thin as few-layers are first synthesized, particularly through a facile low-temperature solution approach with the crystals of large size, regular shape, different thicknesses and high-yields. As a prototypical demonstration of flexible band engineering of PbI2-based interfacial semiconductors, these PbI2 crystals are subsequently assembled with several transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers. The photoluminescence of MoS2 is strongly enhanced in MoS2/PbI2 stacks, while a dramatic photoluminescence quenching of WS2 and WSe2 is revealed in WS2/PbI2 and WSe2/PbI2 stacks. This is attributed to the effective heterojunction formation between PbI2 and these monolayers, but type I band alignment in MoS2/PbI2 stacks where fast-transferred charge carriers accumulate in MoS2 with high emission efficiency, and type II in WS2/PbI2 and WSe2/PbI2 stacks with separated electrons and holes suitable for light harvesting. Our results demonstrate that MoS2, WS2, WSe2 monolayers with very similar electronic structures themselves, show completely distinct light-matter interactions when interfacing with PbI2, providing unprecedent capabilities to engineer the device performance of two-dimensional heterostructures.

Polarization evolution dynamics of dissipative soliton fiber laser

Dissipative solitons are localized solutions in non-integrable and non-conservative nonlinear system, due to a balance of nonlinearity, dispersion, filtering, and loss/gain. Different from conventional soliton, they exhibit extremely complex and striking dynamics, and are more universal in the far-from-equilibrium natural system. Taking advantage of dispersive Fourier transform and time lens, the spatio-temporal transient dynamics of dissipative solitons have been characterized with both amplitude and phase. Yet, a full avenue of the buildup process of dissipative soliton is full of debris for the lack of the polarization evolution information. Here, we characterize the probabilistic polarization distributions in the buildup of dissipative soliton in a net-normal dispersion fiber laser system mode-locked by single-wall carbon nanotubes. The lasing system operates from random amplified spontaneous emission to stable dissipative soliton when the cavity gain is increasing, and state of polarization of each wavelength convergence exponentially towards a fixed point. To reveal the invariant polarization relationship among various wavelengths, the phase diagram of the ellipticity angle and spherical orientation angle is introduced. We find that the polarization of each filtered wavelength in the central region of the dissipative soliton is linearly spaced, while those in the two fronts are spatially varying. Increasing cavity gain leads to spectrum broadening, meanwhile, the polarizations of the new generated frequencies are extending to scatter. Further increasing pump power results into dissipative soliton explosion, during which a kind of polarization optical rogue waves is identified. Those experimental results provide more information for deeper insights into the transient dynamics of dissipative soliton fiber laser.

Parameters optimization and real-time calibration of Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution Network based on Back Propagation Artificial Neural Network

The parameters choosing (such as probabilities of choosing X-basis or Z-basis, intensity of signal state and decoy state, etc.) and system calibrating will be more challenging when the number of users of a measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution(MDI-QKD) network becomes larger. At present, people usually use optimization algorithms to search the best parameters. This method can find the optimized parameters accurately but may cost lots of time and hardware resources. It's a big problem in large scale MDI-QKD network. Here, we present a new method, using Back Propagation Artificial Neural Network(BPNN) to predict, rather than searching the optimized parameters. Compared with optimization algorithms, our BPNN is faster and more lightweight, it can save system resources. Another big problem brought by large scale MDI-QKD network is system recalibration. BPNN can support this work in real time, and it only needs to use some discarded data generated from communication process, rather than require us to add additional devices or scan the system

In-situ fabrication of Mo6S6 nanowire terminated edges in monolayer molybdenum disulfide

Edge structures are highly relevant to the electronic, magnetic and catalytic properties of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and their one dimensional (1D) counterpart, i.e., nanoribbons, which should be precisely tailored for the desirable applications. In this work, we report the formation of novel Mo6S6 nanowire (NW) terminated edges in a monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) via an e-beam irradiation process combined with high temperature heating in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). Atomic structures of NW terminated edges and the dynamic formation process were observed experimentally. Further analysis shows that NW terminated edge could form on both Mo-zigzag (ZZ) edge and S-ZZ edge which can exhibit even higher stability superior to the pristine zigzag (ZZ) and armchair (AC) edge. In addition, the analogous edge structures can be also formed in MoS2 nanoribbon and other TMDs material such as MoxW1-xSe2. We believe that the presence of these novel edge structures in 2D and 1D TMD materials may provide novel properties and new opportunities for their versatile applications including catalytic, spintronic and electronic devices.

Implications of Integrated CPU-GPU Processors on Thermal and Power Management Techniques

Heterogeneous processors with architecturally different cores (CPU and GPU) integrated on the same die lead to new challenges and opportunities for thermal and power management techniques because of shared thermal/power budgets between these cores. In this paper, we show that new parallel programming paradigms (e.g., OpenCL) for CPU-GPU processors create a tighter coupling between the workload, the thermal/power management unit and the operating system. Using detailed thermal and power maps of the die from infrared imaging, we demonstrate that in contrast to traditional multi-core CPUs, heterogeneous processors exhibit higher coupled behavior for dynamic voltage and frequency scaling and workload scheduling, in terms of their effect on performance, power, and temperature. Further, we show that by taking the differences in core architectures and relative proximity of different computing cores on the die into consideration, better scheduling schemes could be implemented to reduce both the power density and peak temperature of the die. The findings presented in the paper can be used to improve thermal and power efficiency of heterogeneous CPU-GPU processors.
