Optical Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Visible Light Communications

The proliferation of connected devices and emergence of internet-of-everything represent a major challenge for broadband wireless networks. This requires a paradigm shift towards the development of innovative technologies for next generation wireless systems. One of the key challenges is the scarcity of spectrum, owing to the unprecedented broadband penetration rate in recent years. A promising solution is the proposal of visible light communications (VLC), which explores the unregulated visible light spectrum to enable high-speed communications, in addition to efficient lighting. This solution offers a wider bandwidth that can accommodate ubiquitous broadband connectivity to indoor users and offload data traffic from cellular networks. Although VLC is secure and able to overcome the shortcomings of RF systems, it suffers from several limitations, e.g., limited modulation bandwidth. In this respect, solutions have been proposed recently to overcome this limitation. In particular, most common orthogonal and non-orthogonal multiple access techniques initially proposed for RF systems, e.g., space-division multiple access (SDMA) and NOMA, have been considered in the context of VLC. In spite of their promising gains, the performance of these techniques is somewhat limited. Consequently, in this article a new and generalized multiple access technique, called rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA), is introduced and investigated for the first time in VLC networks. We first provide an overview of the key multiple access technologies used in VLC systems. Then, we propose the first comprehensive approach to the integration of RSMA with VLC systems. In our proposed framework, SINR expressions are derived and used to evaluate the weighted sum rate (WSR) of a two-user scenario. Our results illustrate the flexibility of RSMA in generalizing NOMA and SDMA, and its WSR superiority in the VLC context.

Multi-UAV Data Collection Framework for Wireless Sensor Networks

In this paper, we propose a framework design for wireless sensor networks based on multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Specifically, we aim to minimize deployment and operational costs, with respect to budget and power constraints. To this end, we first optimize the number and locations of cluster heads (CHs) guaranteeing data collection from all sensors. Then, to minimize the data collection flight time, we optimize the number and trajectories of UAVs. Accordingly, we distinguish two trajectory approaches: 1) where a UAV hovers exactly above the visited CH; and 2) where a UAV hovers within a range of the CH. The results of this include guidelines for data collection design. The characteristics of sensor nodes' K-means clustering are then discussed. Next, we illustrate the performance of optimal and heuristic solutions for trajectory planning. The genetic algorithm is shown to be near-optimal with only $3.5\%$ degradation. The impacts of the trajectory approach, environment, and UAVs' altitude are investigated. Finally, fairness of UAVs trajectories is discussed.

Dynamics of Quadrotor UAVs for Aerial Networks: An Energy Perspective

In this letter, we present a model for quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including control, communication, and wireless charging. In so doing, we investigate associated energy and battery dynamics. Indeed, energy and battery expressions are derived by leveraging motors' and battery electrical models. Through an experiment, their performances are evaluated for different parameters. The objective is to provide a simple yet practical model of quadrotor UAV consumed/harvested energy and battery dynamics for researchers conducting work on energy-efficient aerial networks.

Joint Caching and Resource Allocation in D2D-Assisted Wireless HetNet

5G networks are required to provide very fast and reliable communications while dealing with the increase of users traffic. In Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets) assisted with Device-to-Device (D2D) communication, traffic can be offloaded to Small Base Stations or to users to improve the network's successful data delivery rate. In this paper, we aim at maximizing the average number of files that are successfully delivered to users, by jointly optimizing caching placement and channel allocation in cache-enabled D2D-assisted HetNets. At first, an analytical upper-bound on the average content delivery delay is derived. Then, the joint optimization problem is formulated. The non-convexity of the problem is alleviated, and the optimal solution is determined. Due to the high time complexity of the obtained solution, a low-complex sub-optimal approach is proposed. Numerical results illustrate the efficacy of the proposed solutions and compare them to conventional approaches. Finally, by investigating the impact of key parameters, e.g. power, caching capacity, QoS requirements, etc., guidelines to design these networks are obtained.

Opportunistic Adaptive Relaying in Cognitive Radio Networks

Combining cognitive radio technology with user cooperation could be advantageous to both primary and secondary transmissions. In this paper, we propose a first relaying scheme for cognitive radio networks (called "Adaptive relaying scheme 1"), where one relay node can assist the primary or the secondary transmission with the objective of improving the outage probability of the secondary transmission with respect to a primary outage probability threshold. Upper bound expressions of the secondary outage probability using the proposed scheme are derived over Rayleigh fading channels. Numerical and simulation results show that the secondary outage probability using the proposed scheme is lower than that of other relaying schemes. Then, we extend the proposed scheme to the case where the relay node has the ability to decode both the primary and secondary signals and also can assist simultaneously both transmissions. Simulations show the performance improvement that can be obtained due to this extension in terms of secondary outage probability.

A Novel Relay-Aided Transmission Scheme in Cognitive Radio Networks

In underlay cognitive radio networks, unlicensed secondary users are allowed to share the spectrum with licensed primary users when the interference induced on the primary transmission is limited. In this paper, we propose a new cooperative transmission scheme for cognitive radio networks where a relay node is able to help both the primary and secondary transmissions. We derive exact closed-form and upper bound expressions of the conditional primary and secondary outage probabilities over Rayleigh fading channels. Furthermore, we proposed a simple power allocation algorithm. Finally, using numerical evaluation and simulation results we show the potential of our cooperative transmission scheme in improving the secondary outage probability without harming the primary one.
