DVCS on spinless nuclear targets in impulse approximation

Within the impulse approximation, we derive expressions for the amplitude of deeply virtual Compton scattering on spinless nuclei in terms of the generalized parton distributions of the nucleon. As an application, nuclear effects in the beam-charge and single-spin asymmetries are discussed.

Nuclear shadowing in deep inelastic scattering on nuclei: leading twist versus eikonal approaches

We use several diverse parameterizations of diffractive parton distributions, extracted in leading twist QCD analyses of the HERA diffractive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) data, to make predictions for leading twist nuclear shadowing of nuclear quark and gluon distributions in DIS on nuclei. We find that the HERA diffractive data are sufficiently precise to allow us to predict large nuclear shadowing for gluons and quarks, unambiguously. We performed detailed studies of nuclear shadowing for up and charm sea quarks and gluons within several scenarios of shadowing and diffractive slopes, as well as at central impact parameters. We compare these leading twist results with those obtained from the eikonal approach to nuclear shadowing (which is based on a very different space-time picture) and observe sharply contrasting predictions for the size and Q^2-dependence of nuclear shadowing. The most striking differences arise for the interaction of small dipoles with nuclei, in particular for the longitudinal structure function F_{L}^{A}.

Revealing the black-body regime of small-x deep-inelastic scattering through final-state signals

We derive the major characteristics of inclusive and diffractive final states in deep-inelastic scattering off heavy nuclei for the-high energy (small-x) kinematics in which the limit of complete absorption is reached for the dominant hadronic fluctuations in the virtual photon (the black-body limit of the process). Both the longitudinal and transverse distributions of the leading hadrons are found to be strikingly different from the corresponding ones within the leading-twist approximation, and hence provide unambiguous signals for the onset of the black-body limit.

Complete analysis of spin structure function g1 of He-3

We present a comprehensive analysis of the nuclear effects important in DIS on polarized He-3 over a wide range of Bjorken x, 10^{-4} \leq x \leq 0.8. Effects relevant for the extraction of the neutron spin structure function, g1^n, from the He-3 data are emphasized.

Electron-Nucleus Collisions at THERA

The nuclear option at THERA provides an ideal and unique opportunity to investigate the black body limit (BBL) of high energy Deep Inelastic Scattering of highly virtual photons off heavy nuclear targets and thereby probe QCD in a new regime. At high enough energies, whichever hadronic configuration the photon fluctuates into, the interaction at a given impact parameter with the heavy nuclear target will eventually reach its geometrical limit corresponding to the scattering from a black disk. An attractive feature of the BBL regime for a large nucleus is that the interaction is strong although the coupling constant is small. Predictions for longitudinal and transverse distributions of the leading hadrons in inclusive and diffractive channels and exclusive vector meson production are found to be strikingly different in BBL and the leading twist approximation. In particular, the multiplicity of leading hadrons in the current fragmentation region is strongly suppressed, while the cross section of diffractive vector meson production by longitudinally polarized photons is $ \propto 1/Q^2$. The x and $Q^2$ ranges where BBL maybe reached are calculated for the interaction of color triplet and color octet dipoles at central impact parameters. We conclude that for heavy nuclei THERA would reach deep into BBL for a wide range of $Q^2$. The connection between hard diffraction and leading twist nuclear shadowing is analysed. It is demonstrated that the current leading twist analyses of the HERA diffractive data lead to similar and very large leading twist shadowing for gluons. Several processes sensitive to the amount of nuclear shadowing for gluons are discussed.

Pions in isospin asymmetric nuclei

Using a pair of the lightest mirror nuclei, $^3$He and $^3$H, we study the effect of the medium modification of pion fields on the flavor non-singlet structure function. The change of the pion fields leads to an enhancement of the flavor asymmetry of the antiquark distributions in a nucleus.

Color coherent phenomena on nuclei and the QCD evolution equation

We review the phenomenon of color coherence in quantum chromodynamics (QCD), its implications for hard and soft processes with nuclei, and its experimental manifestations. The relation of factorization theorems in QCD with color coherence phenomena in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and color coherence phenomena in hard exclusive processes is emphasized. Analyzing numerically the QCD evolution equation for conventional and skewed parton densities in nuclei, we study the onset of generalized color transparency and nuclear shadowing of the sea quark and gluon distributions in nuclei as well as related phenomena. Such novel results as the dependence of the effective coherence length on $Q^2$ and general trends of the QCD evolution are discussed. The limits of the applicability of the QCD evolution equation at small Bjorken $x$ are estimated by comparing the inelastic quark-antiquark- and two gluon-nucleon (nucleus) cross sections, calculated within the DGLAP approximation, with the dynamical boundaries, which follow from the unitarity of the $S$ matrix for purely QCD interactions. We also demonstrate that principles of color coherence play an important role in the processes of soft diffraction off nuclei.

Non-singlet structure function of the 3He-3H system and divergence of the Gottfried integral

We study shadowing and antishadowing corrections to the flavor non-singlet structure function F_2(3He)-F_2(3H) and show that the difference between the one-particle density distributions of 3He and 3H plays an important role at very small x. We find that the flavor non-singlet structure function in these mirror nuclei is enhanced at small x by nuclear shadowing, which increases the nuclear Gottfried integral, integrated from 10^{-4} to 1, by 11-36 %. When integrated from zero, the Gottfried integral is divergent for these mirror nuclei. It seems likely that, as a consequence of charge symmetry breaking, this may also apply to the proton-neutron system.

Nuclear shadowing in polarized DIS on ^6LiD at small x and its effect on the extraction of the deuteron spin structure function g_{1}^{d}(x,Q^2)

We consider the effect of nuclear shadowing in polarized deep inelastic scattering (DIS) on ^6LiD at small Bjorken x and its relevance to the extraction of the deuteron spin structure function g_{1}^{d}(x,Q^2). Using models, which describe nuclear shadowing in unpolarized DIS, we demonstrate that the nuclear shadowing correction to g_{1}^{d}(x,Q^2) is significant.

Role of the Delta (1232) in DIS on polarized $^3$He and extraction of the neutron spin structure function $g_{1}^{n}(x,Q^2)$

We consider the effect of the transitions $n \to Δ^{0}$ and $p \to Δ^{+}$ in deep inelastic scattering on polarized $^3$He on the extraction of the neutron spin structure function $g_{1}^{n}(x,Q^2)$. Making the natural assumption that these transitions are the dominant non-nucleonic contributions to the renormalization of the axial vector coupling constant in the A=3 system, we find that the effect of $Δ$ increases $g_{1}^{n}(x,Q^2)$ by $10 ÷40$% in the range $0.05 \le x \le 0.6$, where our considerations are applicable and most of the data for $g_{1}^{n}(x,Q^2)$ exist.

Unitarity and the QCD-improved dipole picture

As a consequence of QCD factorization theorems, a wide variety of inclusive and exclusive cross sections may be formulated in terms of a universal colour dipole cross section at small $x$. It is well known that for small transverse size dipoles this cross section is related to the leading-log gluon density. Using the measured pion-proton cross section as a guide, we suggest a reasonable extrapolation of the dipole cross section to the large transverse size region. We point out that the observed magnitude and small $x$ rise of the gluon density from conventional fits implies that the DGLAP approximation has a restricted region of applicability. We found that `higher twist' or unitarity corrections are required in, or close to, the HERA kinematic region, even for small `perturbative' dipoles for scattering at central impact parameters. This means that the usual perturbative leading twist description, for moderate virtualities, $1 < Q^2 < 10$ GeV$^2$, has rather large `higher twist' corrections at small $x$. In addition, for these virtualities, we also find sizeable contributions from large non-perturbative dipoles ($b \gsim 0.4$ fm) to $F_2$, and also to $F_L$. This also leads to deviations from the standard leading twist DGLAP results, at small $x$ and moderate $Q^2$. Our model also describes the low $Q^2$ data very well without any further tuning. We generalize the Gribov unitarity limit for the structure functions of a hadron target to account for the blackening of the interaction at central impact parameters and to include scattering at peripheral impact parameters which dominate at extremely large energies.

Nuclear effects in $g_{1A}(x,Q^2)$ at small $x$ in deep inelastic scattering on $^7$Li and $^3$He

We suggest to use polarized nuclear targets of $^7$Li and $^3$He to study nuclear effects in the spin dependent structure functions $g_{1A}(x,Q^2)$. These effects are expected to be enhanced by a factor of two as compared to the unpolarized targets. We predict a significant $x$ dependence at $10^{-4} ÷10^{-3} \leq x \leq 0.2$ of $g_{1A}(x,Q^2)/g_{1N}(x,Q^2)$ due to nuclear shadowing and nuclear enhancement. The effect of nuclear shadowing at $x \approx 10^{-3}$ is of an order of 16% for $g_{1A=7}^{n.s. 3/2}(x,Q^2)/g_{1N}^{n.s.}(x,Q^2)$ and 10% for $g_{1A=3}^{n.s}(x,Q^2)/g_{1N}^{n.s.}(x,Q^2)$. By imposing the requirement that the Bjorken sum rule is satisfied we model the effect of enhancement. We find the effect of enhancement at $x \approx 0.125 (0.15)$ to be of an order of $20 (55)%$ for $g_{1A=7}^{n.s. 3/2}(x,Q^2)/g_{1N}^{n.s.}(x,Q^2)$ and $14 (40)%$ for $g_{1A=3}^{n.s}(x,Q^2)/g_{1N}^{n.s.}(x,Q^2)$, if enhancement occupies the region $0.05 \leq x \leq 0.2$ ($0.1 \leq x \leq 0.2$). We predict a 2% effect in the difference of the scattering cross sections of deep inelastic scattering of an unpolarized projectile off $^7$Li with $M_{J}$=3/2 and $M_{J}$=1/2. We also show explicitly that the many-nucleon description of deep inelastic scattering off $^7$Li becomes invalid in the enhancement region $0.05 < x \leq 0.2$.

Nondiagonal Parton Distributions in the Leading Logarithmic Approximation

In this paper we make predictions for nondiagonal parton distributions in a proton in the LLA. We calculate the DGLAP-type evolution kernels in the LLA, solve the nondiagonal GLAP evolution equations with a modified version of the CTEQ-package and comment on the range of applicability of the LLA in the asymmetric regime. We show that the nondiagonal gluon distribution $g(x_{1},x_{2},t,μ^2)$ can be well approximated at small $x$ by the conventional gluon density $xG(x,μ^2)$. Cross Section Fluctuations of Photon Projectile in Generalized Vector Meson Dominance Model

We explain that the generalized vector meson dominance (GVMD) model is successful in describing hard high energy processes because it contains expected in QCD Color Coherent Phenomena. Within the model, which reproduces Bjorken scaling and nuclear shadowing for deep inelastic processes, we calculate $P_γ(σ,Q^2)$, the probability for the photon to interact with a target with the cross section $σ$. We find that within the GVMD model the virtual photon has two main components: the ''hard'' one with the small cross section of the order of $1/Q^2$ and the high probability and the ''soft'' one with a typical hadronic cross section with the probability suppressed by the factor of $1/Q^2$. Thus the GVDM model produces $P_γ(σ,Q^2)$ similar to that within the parton model and suggests the conspiracy between hard and soft QCD at $Q^2 > 1$ GeV$^2$. We study the limit $σ\to 0$ and show, that $P_γ(σ,Q^2) \propto 1/ σ$ in both GVMD model and QCD. Thus similarly to the parton model the GVMD model predicts the Color Transparency phenomenon. This is an indirect indication that Bjorken scaling, Color Transparency and shadowing in nuclei in DIS are closely related.

Color Transparency and Color Opacity in Coherent Production of Vector Mesons off Light Nuclei at small x

Coherent electroproduction of vector mesons off $^2$H and $^4$He is considered in the kinematics of deep inelastic scattering. Special emphasis is given to the $-t\sim 0.8-1$ GeV$^2$ region where the cross section is dominated by the interaction of the $q\bar q$ configuration in the $γ^*$ with two nucleons. These kinematics provide the unique possibilities to study quantitatively in vector meson production the onset of Color Transparency with increasing $Q^2$ as well as its gradual disappearance at very small $x$, i.e., perturbative Color Opacity.

The nuclear effects in $g_{1^3\rm{He}}$ and the Bjorken sum rule for A=3

The Bjorken sum rules for the $A=3$ and $A=1$ are used as a guide to estimate nuclear effects in extracting $g_{1n}(x,Q^{2})$ from the $\vec{e}\,\vec{^3\rm{He}}$ data. We estimate that the combination of the spin depolarization, the nonnucleonic degrees of freedom in the $A=3$ system and nuclear shadowing is likely to reduce $g_{1^3\rm{He}}(x\le 0.05)$ by $\sim 15 \%$ while a significant enhancement of the structure functions $g_{1^3\rm{He}}, g_{1^3\rm{H}}$ at $x \sim 0.1$ is predicted.

Hadronic cross-section fluctuations and proton coherent diffractive dissociation on helium

The differential cross-section of inelastic coherent diffractive dissociation off nuclei $p~+~^4$He $\rightarrow X ~+ ~^4$He is expressed in terms of the relative cumulants of the cross-section distribution $P_N(σ)$. The theoretical result for the ratio $r=\Bigg(\frac{dσ_{diff}}{dt}\Bigg)^{pHe}_{t=0} \Bigg/ \Bigg(\frac{dσ_{diff}}{dt}\Bigg)^{pp}_{t=0}=6.8 ÷7.6$ is close to the value $r=7.1 \pm 0.75$ which we extracted from the FNAL data. These are the only $A>2$ data of this kind. The comparison provides the first confirmation of the cross-section fluctuation approach to the description of the absolute value of the inelastic diffraction cross-section off nuclei. It provides also a new constraint on the first 4 cumulants of the cross-section distribution.
