Photoproduction at collider energies: from RHIC and HERA to the LHC

We present the mini-proceedings of the workshop on ``Photoproduction at collider energies: from RHIC and HERA to the LHC'' held at the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*, Trento) from January 15 to 19, 2007. The workshop gathered both theorists and experimentalists to discuss the current status of investigations of high-energy photon-induced processes at different colliders (HERA, RHIC, and Tevatron) as well as preparations for extension of these studies at the LHC. The main physics topics covered were: (i) small-$x$ QCD in photoproduction studies with protons and in electromagnetic (aka. ultraperipheral) nucleus-nucleus collisions, (ii) hard diffraction physics at hadron colliders, and (iii) photon-photon collisions at very high energies: electroweak and beyond the Standard Model processes. These mini-proceedings consist of an introduction and short summaries of the talks presented at the meeting.

Leading twist nuclear shadowing and suppression of hard coherent diffraction in proton-nucleus scattering

We use the Glauber-Gribov multiple scattering formalism and the theory of leading twist nuclear shadowing to develop a method for the calculation of leading twist hard coherent diffraction in hadron-nucleus processes. We demonstrate that soft multiple rescatterings lead to the factorization breaking of hard diffraction in proton-nucleus scattering, which is larger than in hadron-nucleon scattering. At the LHC and RHIC kinematics, we compare the hard diffractive to e.m.~mechanisms of hard coherent production of two jets in proton-nucleus scattering. We study the x_{\Pomeron}, βand A-dependence of the ratio of the dijet production cross sections due to the two effects, R. We demonstrate that in proton-heavy nucleus hard coherent diffraction at the LHC, R is small, which offers a clean method to study hard photon-proton scattering at the energies exceeding the HERA energies by the factor of ten. On the other hand, the use of lighter nuclei, such as Ca-40, will allow to study the screened nuclear diffractive parton distribution. Moreover, a comparison of the dijet diffractive production to the heavy-quark-jet diffractive production will estimate the screened nuclear diffractive gluon PDF, which will be measured in nucleus-nucleus ultraperipheral collisions at the LHC.

A further analysis of $Θ^+$ production in $γ+D \to Λ+n+K^{+}$ reaction

We analyse Theta+ production in the gamma+D -> Λ+n+K+ reaction and study the dependence of the gamma+D -> Λ+n+K+ differential cross section on the nK+ invariant mass and on the momentum of the final neutron p_n. We examine the important role of the interference between the signal and background contributions to the gamma+D -> Λ+n+K+ amplitude in the extraction of the Theta+ signal from the gamma+D -> Λ+n+K+ cross section. We demonstrate that as a result of the cancellation between the interference and signal contributions, the Theta+ signal almost completely washes out after the integration over p_n. This is consistent with the CLAS conclusion that no statistically significant structures in the analysis of the gamma+D -> Λ+n+K+ reaction were observed. Therefore, there is no disagreement between the theory and the experiment and the CLAS result does not refute the existence of the Theta+.

The dual parameterization of the proton generalized parton distribution functions H and E and description of the DVCS cross sections and asymmetries

We develop the minimal model of a new leading order parameterization of GPDs introduced by Shuvaev and Polyakov. The model for GPDs H and E is formulated in terms of the forward quark distributions, the Gegenbauer moments of the D-term and the forward limit of the GPD E. The model is designed primarely for small and medium-size values of x_B, x_B \leq 0.2. We examined two different models of the t-dependence of the GPDs: The factorized exponential model and the non-factorized Regge-motivated model. Using our model, we successfully described the DVCS cross section measured by H1 and ZEUS, the moments of the beam-spin A_{LU}^{\sin ϕ}, beam-charge A_{C}^{\cos ϕ} and transversely-polarized target A_{UT}^{\sin ϕ\cos ϕ} DVCS asymmetries measured by HERMES and A_{LU}^{\sin ϕ} measured by CLAS. The data on A_{C}^{\cos ϕ} prefers the Regge-motivated model of the t-dependence of the GPDs. The data on A_{UT}^{\sin ϕ\cos ϕ} indicates that the u and d quarks carry only a small fraction of the proton total angular momentum.

On the A-dependence of nuclear generalized parton distributions

We perform a microscopic evaluation of nuclear GPDs for spin-0 nuclei in the framework of the Walecka model. We demonstrate that the meson (non-nucleon) degrees of freedom dramatically influence nuclear GPDs, which is revealed in the non-trivial and unexpected A-dependence of DVCS observables. In particular, we find that the first moment of the nuclear D-term, d_A(0) ~ A^2.26, which confirms the earlier prediction of M.Polyakov. We find that in the HERMES kinematics, contrary to the free proton case, the nuclear meson degrees of freedom in large nuclei enhance the nuclear DVCS amplitude which becomes comparable to the Bethe-Heitler amplitude, and, thus, give the non-trivial A-dependence to the DVCS asymmetries: as a function of the atomic number the beam-charge asymmetry increases whereas the beam-spin asymmetry decreases slowly.

Nuclear shadowing in inclusive and tagged deuteron structure functions and extraction of F_2^p-F_2^n at small x from electron-deuteron collider data

We review predictions of the theory of leading twist nuclear shadowing for inclusive unpolarized and polarized deuteron structure functions F_2^D, g_1^D and b_1^D and for the tagged deuteron structure function F_2^D(x,Q^2,\vec{p}). We analyze the possibility to extract the neutron structure function F_2^n from electron-deuteron data and demonstrate that an account of leading twist nuclear shadowing leads to large corrections for the extraction of F_2^n from the future deuteron collider data both in the inclusive and in the tagged structure function modes. We suggest several strategies to address the extraction of F_2^n and to measure at the same time the effect of nuclear shadowing via the measurement of the distortion of the proton spectator spectrum in the semi-inclusive e D \to e^{\prime}NX process. We address the issue of the final state interactions in the e D \to e^{\prime}NX process and examine how they affect the extraction of F_2^n.

SU(3) systematization of baryons

We review the spectrum of all baryons with the mass less than approximately 2000-2200 MeV using methods based on the approximate flavor SU(3) symmetry of the strong interaction. The application of the Gell-Mann--Okubo mass formulas and SU(3)-symmetric predictions for two-body hadronic decays allows us to successfully catalogue almost all known baryons in twenty-one SU(3) multiplets. In order to have complete multiplets, we predict the existence of several strange particles, most notably the Λhyperon with J^P=3/2^-, the mass around 1850 MeV, the total width approximately 130 MeV, significant branching into the Σπand Σ(1385) πstates and a very small coupling to the N \bar{K} state. Assuming that the antidecuplet exists, we show how a simple scenario, in which the antidecuplet mixes with an octet, allows to understand the pattern of the antidecuplet decays and make predictions for the unmeasured decays.

SU(3) prediction of a new Lambda baryon

Using the approximate flavor SU(3) symmetry of strong interactions, we argue for the existence of a new Lambda baryon with J^P=3/2^-, the mass around 1850 MeV, the total width of about 130 MeV, significant branching into the Sigma πand Sigma^{\ast} πstates and a vanishingly small coupling to the N {\bar K} state. This confirms quark model predictions suggesting a new Lambda baryon in the mass range between 1775 MeV and 1880 MeV with a very small coupling to the N {\bar K} state.

Dual parameterization of generalized parton distributions and description of DVCS data

We discuss a new leading-order parameterization of generalized parton distributions of the proton, which is based on the idea of duality. In its minimal version, the parameterization is defined by the usual quark singlet parton distributions and the form factors of the energy-momentum tensor. We demonstrate that our parameterization describes very well the absolute value, the Q^2-dependence and the W-dependence of the HERA data on the total DVCS cross section and contains no free parameters in that kinematics. The parameterization suits especially well the low-x_{Bj} region, which allows us to advocate it as a better alternative to the frequently used double distribution parameterization of the GPDs.

Nuclear shadowing and extraction of F_2p-F_2n at small x from deuteron collider data

We demonstrate that leading twist nuclear shadowing leads to large corrections for the extraction of the neutron structure function F_2n from the future deuteron collider data both in the inclusive and in the tagged structure function modes. We suggest several strategies to address the extraction of F_2n and to measure at the same time the effect of nuclear shadowing via the measurement of the distortion of the proton spectator spectrum in the semi-inclusive e D \to e^{\prime}pX process.

Leading twist nuclear shadowing: uncertainties, comparison to experiments and higher twist effects

Using the leading twist approach to nuclear shadowing, which is based on the relationship between nuclear shadowing and diffraction on a nucleon, we calculate next-to-leading order nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) and structure functions in the region $0.2 > x > 10^{-5}$ and $Q^2 \geq 4$ GeV$^2$. The uncertainties of our predictions due the uncertainties of the experimental input and the theory are quantified. We determine the relative role of the small ($\sim Q^2$) and large ($\gg Q^2$) diffractive masses in nuclear shadowing as a function of $x$ and find that the large mass contribution, which is an analog of the triple Pomeron exchange, becomes significant only for $x \le 10^{-4}$. Comparing our predictions to the available fixed-target nuclear DIS data, we argue, based on the current experimental studies of the leading twist diffraction, that the data at moderately small $x\sim 0.01$ and $Q^2 \sim 2$ GeV$^2$ could contain significant higher twist effects hindering the extraction of nPDFs from that data. Also, we find that the next-to-leading order effects in nuclear shadowing in the ratio of the nucleus to nucleon structure functions $F_2$ are quite sizable. Within the same formalism, we also present results for the impact parameter dependence of nPDFs. We also address the problem of extracting of the neutron $F_{2n}(x,Q^2)$ from the deuteron and proton data. We suggest a simple and nearly model-independent procedure of correcting for nuclear shadowing effects using $F_2^A/F_2^D$ ratios.

Mixing and decays of the antidecuplet in the context of approximate SU(3) symmetry

We consider mixing of the antidecuplet with three J^P=1/2^+ octets (the ground-state octet, the octet containing N(1440), Λ(1600), Σ(1660) and Ξ(1690) and the octet containing N(1710), Λ(1800), Σ(1880) and Ξ(1950)) in the framework of approximate flavor SU(3) symmetry. We give general expressions for the partial decay widths of all members of the antidecuplet as functions of the two mixing angles. Identifying N_{anti-10} with the N(1670) observed by the GRAAL experiment, we show that the considered mixing scenario can accommodate all present experimental and phenomenological information on the Θ^+ and N_{anti-10} decays: Θ^+ could be as narrow as 1 MeV; the N_{anti-10} -> N + ηdecay is sizable, while the N_{anti-10} ->N + πdecay is suppressed and the N_{anti-10} ->Λ+ K decay is possibly suppressed. Constraining the mixing angles by the N_{anti-10} decays, we make definite predictions for the Σ_{anti-10} decays. We point out that Σ_{anti-10} with mass near 1770 MeV could be searched for in the available data on K_S p invariant mass spectrum, which already revealed the Θ^+ peak. It is important to experimentally verify the decay properties of Σ(1770) because its mass and J^P=1/2^+ make it an attractive candidate for Σ_{anti-10}.

Observations on dA scattering at forward rapidities

We point out that the suppression in the ratio R_dAu recently observed by the BRAHMS collaboration in forward scattering is stronger than usually appreciated. This is related to the fact that at forward rapidities BRAHMS measures negatively charged hadrons and that R_dAu is defined from the ratio of dA and pp scattering cross sections. We also investigate the influence of standard shadowing on R_dAu, and the typical values of partonic momentum fractions relevant in forward scattering. We find that x_Au > 0.02 dominate in the cross section.

Production of Theta+ in gamma + D -> Lambda + Theta+ and gamma + D -> Sigma + Theta+ reactions

The gamma + D -> Lambda + Theta+ and gamma + D -> Sigma + Theta+ reactions can be used to determine the width of Theta+ almost model-independently. We calculate the differential cross sections of the gamma +D -> Lambda + Theta+, gamma + D -> Sigma + Theta+ and relevant background reactions in the photon energy range 1.2 < E_γ < 2.6 GeV. We determine the most favorable kinematic conditions and observables for the experimental studies of Theta+ in the considered processes. We argue that a comparison of the gamma + D -> Lambda + Theta+ and gamma + D -> Sigma + Theta+ cross sections should unambiguously determine isospin of Theta+.

Leading twist coherent diffraction on nuclei in deep inelastic scattering at small x and nuclear shadowing

We extend the theory of leading twist nuclear shadowing to calculate leading twist nuclear diffractive parton distribution functions (nDPDFs). We observe that the quark and gluon nPDFs have different patterns of the $A$-dependence. It is found that the probability of diffraction in the quark channel increases with $A$, reaching about 30% at $x \sim 10^{-4}$ for $A \sim 200$, and weakly decreases with $Q^2$. In the gluon channel, the probability of diffraction is large for all nuclei ($\sim 40$% for heavy nuclei at $x \sim 10^{-4}$ and $Q_0^2 \sim 4$ GeV$^2$), it weakly depends on $A$ and it decreases rather fast with increasing $Q^2$ -- the probability decreases by approximately a factor of two as $Q^2$ changes from 4 GeV$^2$ to 100 GeV$^2$. We also find that nuclear shadowing breaks down Regge factorization of nDPDFs, which is satisfied experimentally in the nucleon case. All these novel effects in nDPDFs are large enough to be straightforwardly measured in ultraperipheral collisions at the LHC.

Determining the Proximity of Γ^{\ast} N Scattering to the Black Body Limit Using DIS and J/ ψProduction

We use information about DIS and $J/ ψ$ production on hydrogen to model the $t$-dependence of the $γ^{\ast} N$ scattering amplitude. We investigate the profile function for elastic scattering of hadronic components of the virtual photon off both a nucleon and heavy nuclear target, and we estimate the value of the impact parameter where the black body limit is reached. We also estimate the fraction of the cross section that is due to hadronic configurations in the virtual photon wave function that approach the unitarity limit. We extract, from these considerations, approximate lower limits on the values of $x$ where the leading twist approximation in DIS is violated. We observe that the black body limit may be approached within HERA kinematics with $Q^{2}$ equal to a few GeV$^2$ and $x \sim 10^{-4}$. Comparisons are made with earlier predictions by Munier {\it et al.}, and the longitudinal structure function is compared with preliminary HERA data. The principle advantage of our method is that we do not rely solely on the $t$-dependence of $ρ$-meson production data. This allows us to extend our analysis down to very small impact parameters and dipole sizes. Finally, we perform a similar calculation with a $^{208}$Pb target, and we demonstrate that the black body limit is already approached at $Q^{2} \sim 20$ GeV$^{2}$ and $x \sim 10^{-4}$.

Hard probes in heavy ion collisions at the LHC: PDFs, shadowing and $pA$ collisions

This manuscript is the outcome of the subgroup ``PDFs, shadowing and $pA$ collisions'' from the CERN workshop ``Hard Probes in Heavy Ion Collisions at the LHC''. In addition to the experimental parameters for $pA$ collisions at the LHC, the issues discussed are factorization in nuclear collisions, nuclear parton distributions (nPDFs), hard probes as the benchmark tests of factorization in $pA$ collisions at the LHC, and semi-hard probes as observables with potentially large nuclear effects. Also, novel QCD phenomena in $pA$ collisions at the LHC are considered. The importance of the $pA$ program at the LHC is emphasized.

Onset of Perturbative Color Opacity at Small x and Upsilon Coherent Photoproduction off heavy nuclei at LHC

We study photon-induced coherent production of Upsilon in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions at LHC and demonstrate that the counting rates will be sufficient to measure nuclear shadowing of generalized gluon distributions. This will establish the transition from the regime of color transparency to the regime of perturbative color opacity in an unambiguous way. We argue that such measurements will provide the possibility to investigate the interaction of ultra-small color dipoles with nuclei in QCD at large energies, which are beyond the reach of the electron-nucleon (nucleus) colliders, and will unambiguously discriminate between the leading twist and higher twist scenarios of gluon nuclear shadowing.
