Bogoliubov excitation spectrum of an elongated condensate from quasi-one-dimensional to three-dimensional transition

The quasiparticle excitation spectra of a Bose gas trapped in a highly anisotropic trap is studied with respect to varying total number of particles by numerically solving the effective one-dimensional (1D) Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation proposed recently by Mateo \textit{et al.}. We obtain the static properties and Bogoliubov spectra of the system in the high energy domain. This method is computationally efficient and highly accurate for a condensate system undergoing a 1D to three-dimensional (3D) cigar-shaped transition, as is shown through a comparison our results with both those calculated by the 3D-GP equation and analytical results obtained in limiting cases. We identify the applicable parameter space for the effective 1D-GP equation and find that this equation fails to describe a system with large number of atoms. We also identify that the description of the transition from 1D Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to 3D cigar-shaped BEC using this equation is not smooth, which highlights the fact that for a finite value of $a_\perp/a_s$ the junction between the 1D and 3D crossover is not perfect.

Theoretical investigation of thermostability of incompressible channels in quantum Hall states

In this work we use self-consistent method considering a two dimensional electron gas system in the integer quantum Hall regime, to calculate the temperature induced decay of incompressible stripes. There are two types of incompressible strips which can form in a Hall bar system by varying the electron density or magnetic field. We observe that the way of collapse of incompressible strips strongly depends on the type of them. With increasing temperature a bulk incompressible strip will decay from the middle and separate into two edge channels by a density ramp, while an incompressible edge channel reduces its size from both sides until vanishes.

Entanglement-based quantum key distribution with biased basis choice via free space

We report a free-space entanglement-based quantum key distribution experiment, implementing the biased basis protocol between two sites which are 15.3 km apart. Photon pairs from a polarization-entangled source are distributed through two 7.8-km free-space optical links. An optimal bias 20:80 between the X and Z basis is used. A post-processing scheme with finite-key analysis is applied to extract the final secure key. After three-hour continuous operation at night, a 4293-bit secure key is obtained, with a final key rate of 0.124 bit per raw key bit which increases the final key rate by 14.8% comparing to the standard BB84 case. Our results experimentally demonstrate that the efficient BB84 protocol, which increases key generation efficiency by biasing Alice and Bob's basis choices, is potentially useful for the ground-satellite quantum communication.

Distortion of Interference Fringes and the Resulting Vortex Production of Merging Bose-Einstein Condensates

We investigate the effects of interatomic interactions and expansion on the distortion of interference fringes of a pair of initially well-separated, but coherent, condensate clouds trapped in a harmonic trap. The distortion of interference fringes, which can lead to the spontaneous formation of vortices in the atom clouds, depends crucially on two relevant parameters: the center-of-mass velocity and peak density of the initial state. We identify three qualitatively distinct regimes for the interfering condensates: collision, expansion, and merging, by the spatial and temporal features of the fringe spacings. Using a comprehensive set of numerical simulations based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we specify the cross-overs between these regimes and propose the optimal the system parameters required for dynamical instabilities and vortex creation.

Experimental Single-Photon Transmission from Satellite to Earth

Free-space quantum communication with satellites opens a promising avenue for global secure quantum network and large-scale test of quantum foundations. Recently, numerous experimental efforts have been carried out towards this ambitious goal. However, one essential step - transmitting single photons from the satellite to the ground with high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at realistic environments - remains experimental challenging. Here, we report a direct experimental demonstration of the satellite-ground transmission of a quasi-single-photon source. In the experiment, single photons (~0.85 photon per pulse) are generated by reflecting weak laser pulses back to earth with a cube-corner retro-reflector on the satellite Champ, collected by a 600-mm diameter telescope at the ground station, and finally detected by single-photon counting modules (SPCMs) after 400-km free-space link transmission. With the help of high accuracy time synchronization, narrow receiver field-of-view (FOV) and high-repetition-rate pulses (76 MHz), a SNR of better than 16:1 is obtained, which is sufficient for a secure quantum key distribution. Our experimental results represent an important step towards satellite-ground quantum communication.

Interacting Multiple Model-Feedback Particle Filter for Stochastic Hybrid Systems

In this paper, a novel feedback control-based particle filter algorithm for the continuous-time stochastic hybrid system estimation problem is presented. This particle filter is referred to as the interacting multiple model-feedback particle filter (IMM-FPF), and is based on the recently developed feedback particle filter. The IMM-FPF is comprised of a series of parallel FPFs, one for each discrete mode, and an exact filter recursion for the mode association probability. The proposed IMM-FPF represents a generalization of the Kalmanfilter based IMM algorithm to the general nonlinear filtering problem. The remarkable conclusion of this paper is that the IMM-FPF algorithm retains the innovation error-based feedback structure even for the nonlinear problem. The interaction/merging process is also handled via a control-based approach. The theoretical results are illustrated with the aid of a numerical example problem for a maneuvering target tracking application.

Generalized Yetter-Drinfel'd module categories for regular multiplier Hopf algebras

For a regular multiplier Hopf algebra $A$, the Yetter-Drinfel'd module category ${}_{A}\mathcal{YD}^{A}$ is equivalent to the centre $Z({}_{A}\mathcal{M})$ of the unital left $A$-module category ${}_{A}\mathcal{M}$. Then we introduce the generalized $(α, β)$-Yetter-Drinfel'd module categories ${}_{A}\mathcal{GYD}^{A}(α, β)$, which are treated as components of a braided $T$-category. Especially when $A$ is a coFrobenius Hopf algebra, ${}_{A}\mathcal{YD}^{A}(α, β)$ is isomorphic to the unital $\hat{A} \bowtie A(α, β)$-module category ${}_{\hat{A} \bowtie A(α, β)}\mathcal{M}$. Finally for a Yetter-Drinfel'd $A$-module algebra $H$, we introduce Yetter-Drinfel'd $(H, A)$-module category, which is a monoidal.

Effects of n-type doping in InAs/GaAs quantum dot layer on current-voltage characteristic of intermediate band solar cells

We investigated the current-voltage characteristic of InAs/GaAs quantum dot intermediate band solar cells (QD IBSCs) with different n-type doping density in the QD layer. The n-type doping evidently increases the open circuit voltage, meanwhile decreases the short circuit current density, and leads to the conversion efficiency approaching that of the control solar cell, that is the major role of n-type doping is to suppress the effects of QDs on the current-voltage characteristic. Our model adopts practical parameters for simulation rather than those from detailed balanced method, so that the results in our simulation are not overestimated.

Joint Probabilistic Data Association-Feedback Particle Filter for Multiple Target Tracking Applications

This paper introduces a novel feedback-control based particle filter for the solution of the filtering problem with data association uncertainty. The particle filter is referred to as the joint probabilistic data association-feedback particle filter (JPDA-FPF). The JPDA-FPF is based on the feedback particle filter introduced in our earlier papers. The remarkable conclusion of our paper is that the JPDA-FPF algorithm retains the innovation error-based feedback structure of the feedback particle filter, even with data association uncertainty in the general nonlinear case. The theoretical results are illustrated with the aid of two numerical example problems drawn from multiple target tracking applications.

Multivariable Feedback Particle Filter

In recent work it is shown that importance sampling can be avoided in the particle filter through an innovation structure inspired by traditional nonlinear filtering combined with Mean-Field Game formalisms. The resulting feedback particle filter (FPF) offers significant variance improvements; in particular, the algorithm can be applied to systems that are not stable. The filter comes with an up-front computational cost to obtain the filter gain. This paper describes new representations and algorithms to compute the gain in the general multivariable setting. The main contributions are, (i) Theory surrounding the FPF is improved: Consistency is established in the multivariate setting, as well as well-posedness of the associated PDE to obtain the filter gain. (ii) The gain can be expressed as the gradient of a function, which is precisely the solution to Poisson's equation for a related MCMC diffusion (the Smoluchowski equation). This provides a bridge to MCMC as well as to approximate optimal filtering approaches such as TD-learning, which can in turn be used to approximate the gain. (iii) Motivated by a weak formulation of Poisson's equation, a Galerkin finite-element algorithm is proposed for approximation of the gain. Its performance is illustrated in numerical experiments.

Feedback Particle Filter

A new formulation of the particle filter for nonlinear filtering is presented, based on concepts from optimal control, and from the mean-field game theory. The optimal control is chosen so that the posterior distribution of a particle matches as closely as possible the posterior distribution of the true state given the observations. This is achieved by introducing a cost function, defined by the Kullback-Leibler (K-L) divergence between the actual posterior, and the posterior of any particle. The optimal control input is characterized by a certain Euler-Lagrange (E-L) equation, and is shown to admit an innovation error-based feedback structure. For diffusions with continuous observations, the value of the optimal control solution is ideal. The two posteriors match exactly, provided they are initialized with identical priors. The feedback particle filter is defined by a family of stochastic systems, each evolving under this optimal control law. A numerical algorithm is introduced and implemented in two general examples, and a neuroscience application involving coupled oscillators. Some preliminary numerical comparisons between the feed- back particle filter and the bootstrap particle filter are described.

Experimental measurement-based quantum computing beyond the cluster-state model

The paradigm of measurement-based quantum computation opens new experimental avenues to realize a quantum computer and deepens our understanding of quantum physics. Measurement-based quantum computation starts from a highly entangled universal resource state. For years, clusters states have been the only known universal resources. Surprisingly, a novel framework namely quantum computation in correlation space has opened new routes to implement measurement-based quantum computation based on quantum states possessing entanglement properties different from cluster states. Here we report an experimental demonstration of every building block of such a model. With a four-qubit and a six-qubit state as distinct from cluster states, we have realized a universal set of single-qubit rotations, two-qubit entangling gates and further Deutsch's algorithm. Besides being of fundamental interest, our experiment proves in-principle the feasibility of universal measurement-based quantum computation without using cluster states, which represents a new approach towards the realization of a quantum computer.

Eigen-Direction Alignment Based Physical-Layer Network Coding for MIMO Two-Way Relay Channels

In this paper, we propose a novel communication strategy which incorporates physical-layer network coding (PNC) into multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) two-way relay channels (TWRCs). At the heart of the proposed scheme lies a new key technique referred to as eigen-direction alignment (EDA) precoding. The EDA precoding efficiently aligns the two-user's eigen-modes into the same directions. Based on that, we carry out multi-stream PNC over the aligned eigen-modes. We derive an achievable rate of the proposed EDA-PNC scheme, based on nested lattice codes, over a MIMO TWRC. Asymptotic analysis shows that the proposed EDA-PNC scheme approaches the capacity upper bound as the number of user antennas increases towards infinity. For a finite number of user antennas, we formulate the design criterion of the optimal EDA precoder and present solutions. Numerical results show that there is only a marginal gap between the achievable rate of the proposed EDA-PNC scheme and the capacity upper bound of the MIMO TWRC, in the median-to-large SNR region. We also show that the proposed EDA-PNC scheme significantly outperforms existing amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward based schemes for MIMO TWRCs.

Spiral magnetic structure in spin-5/2 frustrated trimerized chains in SrMn3P4O14

We study a spin-5/2 antiferromagnetic trimerized chain substance SrMn3P4O14 using neutron powder diffraction experiments. The coplanar spiral magnetic structure appears below T_N1 = 2.2(1) K. Values of several magnetic structure parameters change rapidly at T_N2 = 1.75(5) K, indicating another phase transition, although the magnetic structures above and below T_N2 are the qualitatively same. The spiral magnetic structure can be explained by frustration between nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions in the trimerized chains.

Magnetic excitations in the spin-5/2 antiferromagnetic trimer substance SrMn3P4O14

A quantum-mechanical 1/3 magnetization plateau and magnetic long-range order appear in the large-spin (5/2) substance SrMn3P4O14. Magnetization results of SrMn3P4O14 can be explained by the spin-5/2 isolated antiferromagnetic linear trimer with the intra-trimer interaction ($J_1$) value of 4.0 K. In the present study, to confirm the spin system, we performed inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments of SrMn3P4O14 powders. We observed plural magnetic excitations. The peak positions are 0.46, 0.68, and 1.02 meV. Constant-Q-scan spectra at several Q values (magnitude of the scattering vector) indicate that the dispersion is weak. The weak dispersion indicates that the excitations are transitions between discrete energy levels. Our INS results are consistent with results expected in the trimer model. We evaluated the J1 value as 0.29 meV (3.4 K) without considering the other interactions.

Spiral ground state against ferroelectricity in the frustrated magnet BiMnFe2O6

The spiral magnetic structure and underlying spin lattice of BiMnFe2O6 are investigated by low-temperature neutron powder diffraction and density functional theory band structure calculations. In spite of the random distribution of the Mn3+ and Fe3+ cations, this compound undergoes a transition into an incommensurate antiferromagnetically ordered state below TN ~ 220 K. The magnetic structure is characterized by the propagation vector k=[0,beta,0] with beta ~ 0.14 and the P22_12_11'(0 β0)0s0s magnetic superspace symmetry. It comprises antiferromagnetic helixes propagating along the b-axis. The magnetic moments lie in the ac plane and rotate about pi*(1+beta) ~ 204.8 deg angle between the adjacent magnetic atoms along b. The spiral magnetic structure arises from the peculiar frustrated arrangement of exchange couplings in the ab plane. The antiferromagnetic coupling along the c-axis leads to the cancellation of electric polarization, and results in the lack of ferroelectricity in BiMnFe2O6.

Experimental Test of Bell inequalities with Six-Qubit Graph States

We report on the experimental realization of two different Bell inequality tests based on six-qubit linear-type and Y-shape graph states. For each of these states, the Bell inequalities tested are optimal in the sense that they provide the maximum violation among all Bell inequalities with stabilizing observables and possess the maximum resistance to noise.

Efficient Privacy-Preserving Authentication Protocol for Vehicular Communications with Trustworthy

In this paper, we introduce an efficient and trustworthy conditional privacy-preserving communication protocol for VANETs based on proxy re-signature. The proposed protocol is characterized by the Trusted Authority (TA) designating the Roadside Units (RSUs) to translate signatures computed by the On-Board Units (OBUs) into one that are valid with respect to TA's public key. In addition, the proposed protocol offers both a priori and a posteriori countermeasures: it can not only provide fast anonymous authentication and privacy tracking, but guarantees message trustworthiness for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications. Furthermore, it reduces the communication overhead and offers fast message authentication and, low storage requirements. We use extensive analysis to demonstrate the merits of the proposed protocol and to contrast it with previously proposed solutions.
